Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
“It's important that we remember to talk ‘to' our kids, not ‘at' them” - Mark Hart Summary Parents are rightly concerned today about the influence of the culture on their teens. As much as we would like to put our kids in a teflon bubble to shield them from the false fake culture of the world, it is just not possible! What do our kids need from us to prepare them for life? Join us in this podcast for a conversation with Mark Hart of Lifeteen - a speaker, author, and parent himself of teens and adult children. Mark gives us some great insights (and laughs!) on how to talk to your kids, what they are REALLY looking for, and what not to be afraid of. We were blessed in this conversation and we are thrilled to be able to share it with you! Key Takeaways Keeping teens in a “teflon” bubble and trying to shield them from the world their whole lives doesn't work. We need to teach them and get them ready. Kids need space to ask questions and have conversations with their parents without feeling judged. Pushing back is a natural part of maturation. Teens demand authenticity! They challenge us to be real and that is good for us and for the Church. Talk “to” your kids, not “at” them. Significant conversations with our teens allow our lives to re-echo across the generations. Take time for conversations. For parents, the 20 minutes you spend focused on your child and not on yourself is as spiritually beneficial as a Holy Hour! Parents should be less concerned with WHAT your child knows and more concerned about WHO is teaching them and where they are getting their information from God entrusted these souls to you for a season. They will not be living under your roof forever. See your child as a whole person. You need to spend time with them and really “see” them. A successful home has three altars: the dinner table to share life and food, the coffee table to gather with family and friends for ideas and fun, and the marriage bed that forms the foundation of the family. Parents often think of themselves as a hose that ideas and prayer comes through, but we need to be like a fountain - filled up so much in ourselves that we spill over onto our spouse, children, and everyone around us. Couple Discussion Questions Do we take time to have significant conversations with our kids? How can we do this more? Looking at the maturity of our children, are we protecting them too much? Not enough? How are we doing in using the “three altars” of our home? Are all three of them places that are giving life to our family?
Canon Francis Altiere, ICKSP serves as Rector of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Oratory in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was ordained in 2014. In Today's Show As a practicing Catholic student, how does one separate spiritual and academic life? What is the significance of the humeral veil during Benediction, since the Monstrance already protects the body of Christ? How do I know what Mass is going to be sung ahead of time so I don't have to fruitlessly flip through the Kyriale? How do you get out of purgatory and what prayers should be said for the souls in purgatory? Is there any theological significance behind the destruction of the temple that happened in 70 AD? How much is taught in seminary about preaching the homily? Why don't the congregation have to respond in the Low Mass? I know the Altar servers do it for us. Is it just the "quiet Mass?" We have several “New American” Bibles from when our adult children went to Catholic school. What is the proper way to dispose of them? Can you explain the various titles for Mary in the litany - Spiritual Vessel, Vessel of Honor, etc? Are you familiar with a special Mass called Life Teen? Is it still being offered? Is it offered in Latin? And can a non-teenager attend? It's more important than ever for the Church to try and retain youth with more and more preferring to have no religious affiliation. This is done through youth ministry but even that can be a challenge, especially with technology being such a big distraction. In 2024, what is the best way to get teens to not only come to events but to keep coming and get something out of it so they stay with the faith once they graduate high school? Many parishes use LifeTeen for their Youth Ministry and we have missionaries from there to explain what works and does not work in youth ministry. It's no secret making friends as a young adult is hard. In high school, you're forced to be around people 8 hours a day. If you go to college you're forced to live with people and are still in a bubble where there are countless organizations to get involved in. But if you don't go to college or recently graduated from there, it's tough. Where do you start? City on Purpose takes the work out of it for you in Atlanta to find events, roommates, and more. DescriptionWhat happens when you really stand back and let Jesus lead the way? Yes, in every aspect of your life - career, vocation, raising kids, etc.. But what if Catholic speakers, with great talent, opportunity and ambition don't follow this principle. I shudder to think, but then again I just have to look at my own life to see the results. Self-reliance is an idol that needs to be crushed in each our lives as disciples, and certainly foremost for those who come to serve the Lord through speaking, teaching and speaking. But I started off by asking ‘what if', what would it look like for a Catholic speaker to be dead serious about expecting, waiting, and trusting Jesus to take the lead? While no one does it perfectly, my guest today, Mari Pablo, shares with great humility and profound trust in God, her conviction the need to to step aside and allow Jesus to bring the opportunities, bear the fruit, and get the glory. Mari Pablo grew up in a devout, always supportive, boisterous Hispanic family in South Florida. She graduated from Franciscan University with a double major in theology and psychology; she also holds a Master of Theology from the Augustine Institute. She has worked in youth ministry for over 15 years, and is currently serving parishes and universities across the country with The Evangelical Catholic.Mari is a presenter in numerous projects for Ascension Press and is well known for her dynamic presentations at the annual Steubenville Youth Conferences, NCYC, NET, Life Teen events, FOCUS conference, diocesan events and more. Published: February 23, 2020 How does someone go from being a non-Catholic to leading one of the largest Catholic Youth Ministry efforts in the United States and around the world? Today, Changing Our World's Jim Friend interviews the CEO of Life Teen International, Mr. Randy Raus.Randy has been with Life Teen International for over 23 years, serving and leading this important ministry which is centered on the experience of liturgy. He began his ministry with a conversion experience which he shares with us on today's show. Randy also shares his thoughts on how to engage young people in the life of the Church today. He also explains how Life Teen impacts teens all over the world. Life Teen International Through powerful Eucharistic encounters and engaging catechesis, the Edge (middle school) and Life Teen (high school) teens are immersed in a dynamic Catholic parish culture. With the parish as their true home, teens are then further strengthened by Summer Camps, Events, Resources, and Digital (web and social media) evangelization. Their goal is not only to equip parishes worldwide with timely, high-quality resources to train Catechists and “reach” today's teens but also to create an environment where Catholic teenagers feel supported and engaged the other 167 hours a week outside of Sunday Mass. In this episode, the dogs talk about what it means to sacramentalize all things. They discuss the tendency to separate "holy" things from seemingly unholy things (1:30) and the opposing belief that all things are restored in Christ (4:00). Mike brings up his experience serving at Life Teen retreats (9:55), Rob shares what was so impactful about visiting the Martin home in France (11:20), and Connor tells about a recent trip to the doctor (13:10). They all discuss being freed, as priests, to focus on loving people, not just trying to save them (21:30). Also, they reminisce about that time Mike got scabies (28:25). Quotes: “Life with God is not an obligation, but it's really a gift.” (Mike, 9:10) “The retreat actually is reality; what we want to do is integrate the rest of your life into that relationship, into that experience.” (Mike, 10:30) “Every room in their home was clearly about being together.” (Rob about the Martin home, 12:15) “I want to bring Christ into that world. That's what the invitation is, bring all of that suffering into Jesus. Even that is not outside of his power and grace.” (Mike, 20:40) “I just get to love people. That's my whole job.” (Mike, 21:00) “Jesus says 'behold I make all things new', not 'behold I make new things'.” (Connor quoting Schmemann, 22:05) "Nothing is wasted. It's all ingredients somehow in this ultimate project of joy.” (Connor, 23:20) “He has assumed all of our humanity and now we donate our humanity to him to become transfigured and glorified.” (Connor, 23:36) “I'm not on to save people, I'm on to love people.” (Rob quoting Mike, 25:29) "The Christian is to the world what the soul is to the body." (letter to Diognetus, 35:10) “My prerogative is to treat everyone with equal love and equal dignity.” (Mike, 38:20) Media Mentions: Ned SchneeblySchool of Rock (2003)C.S. In this Say Yes to Holiness podcast 1:1 Conversation, Christina sits down with Paul & Kay Halfmann of D:6 Ministries. Our conversation revolved around the origin of D:6 Ministries, how Paul and Kay Halfmann came to be involved in this work; and why the work of helping parents become the primary educators of their children is absolutely vital for the future of the Church... Paul and Kay have been married for 33 years. They have seven children ranging from 15-30 years old. Paul worked as a youth minister for more than 15 years. He also ran a small business and also led Catholic Pilgrimages. Kay was a stay at home parent until all the children were in school. She worked six years as an office manager for Birthright Counseling, St. Louis and currently is the Front Office Manager at St. Pius X Catholic High School. Together they have developed, led, and participated in hundreds of retreats including Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) Sacramental retreats, REAP Team, Life Teen, family retreats, healing retreats, chastity retreats, Luke 18 retreats and Life in the Spirit Seminars in order to help parents fulfill their God-given responsibilities as the first educators of their children. I was inspired and highly encouraged by my conversation with Paul & Kay, and I know that you will be, too as you listen (or watch) the conversation. Parents and youth ministers in the Catholic church want their children to grow up and attend a parish where they can get sustained formation. The problem is that many parishes are not actually equipped with leaders who can do that effectively. Even with well-trained youth leaders, the capacity is limited in parishes that are not well-led and where the culture isn't healthy at its core. This is how your best people end up burnt out because they aren't being given the support needed to thrive. As parish leaders, we're often waiting for the "next generation" to come to us, or perhaps they're already here, but they're leaving because we aren't connecting in the way that they need us to. It's vital for us to address these growing concerns, be willing to break away from what no longer works and reimagine the way that we reach the next generation with the love of Jesus! This week's guest helps parishes create a culture where this type of change can happen. Joel Stepanek is the VP of Parish Services at Life Teen, an organization that provides a safe and fun place for youth to experience Catholic community, get answers to their questions, and, most importantly, experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. Our conversation dives into some of our deep-seated cultural norms and offers incredible insight about how we can more effectively engage young people in the Church.

DescriptionWe say thousands of words each day. Many of our words aren't world changing, they just help make it from morning to night, accomplish our work and family goals, and get us from point A to point B. Most of which we (or anyone else) will ever remember. And that's probably a good thing.Speaking to Catholic audiences uses that same format - a string of words put together as strings of sentences - but it's different. There's a different intent, a different power, and a different weight. This was a highlight of my conversation with Kelly Colangelo, on the “privilege of speaking”, the profound trust that another gives when they hand us a microphone. It is something that having done it enough we might start taking for granted. Not Kelly - even after all these years you can hear the great honor it is for her to be entrusted with such a task. It calls me on. I bet it will for you too.Kelly fell in love with Jesus at age 17 and has dedicated her life to bringing others into a radical relationship with Christ. She has been involved in ministry for more than a decade spreading the Gospel message at retreats, rallies and conferences. She speaks internationally to people of all ages on a variety of topics and has appeared on EWTN's Life on the Rock, and has been a contributor to Life Teen and Chastity Project blogs.Kelly currently serves as the Director of Youth and College Ministry at a parish in Northwest Florida. She graduated with honors from Niagara University with her B.A. in psychology, communications & theology and from Syracuse University with her M.S. in counseling.
