Today our guest is Yoni Shrira, friend of the show and survivor of the Family Foundation School, a troubled teen sobriety school that became notorious for how many of its former students died after going through the program. In part one today, he's going to talk about what he was like as a teenager, how he was genuinely out of control when it came to drugs and alcohol, and why his parents believed the school was the best option to help him. He'll tell us about the religious undertones of the group, how the students were separated into groups they called “families,” the culture of constant fear and snitching, and why he thinks so many kids died. Plus next week, we'll talk about some of the harrowing punishments the kids experienced and what it felt like to finally leave. We have holiday deals for you!! The first time Trina Edwards was locked in a psychiatric hospital for children, she was 12 years old. She was sure a foster parent would pick her up the next day. But instead, Trina would end up spending years cycling in and out of North Star Behavioral Health in Anchorage, Alaska. At times, she was ready to be discharged, but Alaska's Office of Children's Services couldn't find anywhere else to put her – so Trina would stay locked in at North Star, where she would experience violent restraints and periods of seclusion. Then, shortly before her 15th birthday, Trina was sent to another facility 3,000 miles away: Copper Hills Youth Center in Utah. Both North Star and Copper Hills are owned by Universal Health Services, a publicly traded Fortune 500 company that is the nation's largest psychiatric hospital chain. Trina's experience is emblematic of a larger problem: a symbiotic relationship between failing child welfare agencies, which don't have enough foster homes for all the kids in custody, and large for-profit companies like Universal Health Services, which have beds to fill. This hour, Mother Jones reporter Julia Lurie exposes how Universal Health Services is profiting off foster kids who get admitted to its facilities, despite government and media investigations raising alarming allegations about patient care that the company denies. In a verdict that has rippled across the nation, Jennifer Crumbley has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the tragic school shooting carried out by her son, Ethan Crumbley, at Oxford High School in Michigan in 2021. This groundbreaking case raises a critical question: Are we on the cusp of redefining the boundaries of parental accountability for their children's actions, especially in the context of school shootings? Tony Brueski, the host of "Hidden Killers," delved into this complex issue with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke. Together, they explored the potential long-term impacts of this verdict on future cases and the broader implications for society. "This case very well could change the fabric of our society," Brueski remarked, emphasizing the significance of holding parents accountable for their children's violent actions. Dreeke, with his extensive background in behavioral analysis, offered a nuanced perspective on the challenges and potential solutions to preventing such tragedies. He argued that while the Crumbley case might set a legal precedent, the solution to preventing school shootings lies in addressing the root causes, including mental health issues and the cycle of troubled families. The conversation also touched upon the possibility of revisiting past cases in light of this verdict. With no statute of limitations on homicide in many jurisdictions, the door could be open to holding more parents accountable for their roles in their children's actions. Yet, as Dreeke and Brueski discussed, the implications of such actions are complex, potentially unearthing trauma without necessarily providing closure or preventing future tragedies. One of the most poignant aspects of their discussion centered around the challenges faced by parents, particularly those with limited resources or knowledge about mental health. Dreeke emphasized the importance of providing parents with the tools and support necessary to foster healthier relationships with their children. He outlined a communication strategy focused on openness, non-judgmental curiosity, and empowering choices, suggesting that these principles could lay the foundation for preventing troubled teens from spiraling into violence. However, Dreeke was careful to note that while improving communication and relationships is vital, it is not a panacea. The complexities of mental health, societal pressures, and the availability of firearms contribute to a multifaceted problem that requires a comprehensive approach. "We are extremely lacking in really caring about mental health in this country," Dreeke lamented, highlighting the need for systemic changes to address these issues effectively. As the conversation concluded, Brueski and Dreeke pondered the future. The Crumbley verdict indeed marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over parental responsibility and gun violence. Still, it also underscores the need for a broader societal effort to address the underlying issues fueling school shootings. While the verdict in the Crumbley case may set a legal precedent, the discussion between Brueski and Dreeke serves as a reminder that legal accountability is only one piece of the puzzle. To truly prevent future tragedies, society must commit to tackling the complex web of factors that lead to school shootings, from mental health and family dynamics to gun access and societal attitudes towards violence. As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Oxford High School shooting and its implications, one thing is clear: the conversation about parental responsibility, mental health, and school safety is far from over. Will the Crumbley verdict be the catalyst for meaningful change, or will it simply be a footnote in the ongoing struggle to protect our children? Only time will tell, but the dialogue sparked by cases like this is a crucial step toward finding solutions. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode of Through the Hard, we dive into the topic of control and over-functioning in parenting. It's something many of us struggle with, and it can have negative effects on our teens. I often find myself in that same place, trying to control every aspect of my teen's life, thinking it is the best way to protect them. But I'm learning that it's so important to find a balance. Our teens need some freedom to make their own choices and learn from their mistakes. That's where the concept of balanced oversight comes in. Finding that sweet spot between being too controlling and not being involved enough. Providing guidance and support without taking over their lives. Listen as we discuss seven practical tips to help you practice finding a balance between control and your own freedom. It won't happen overnight, but patience and practice can create a healthier dynamic with your teen.Resources mentioned in the podcast:Register for the 4 Principles for Fighting Fear workshop HEREArticle by Dr. Amy Johnson: Don't Make it Happen, Allow it to HappenAdditional Resources:Pathways website: https://pathwaystohopenetwork.org/ (Subscribe for weekly encouragement) Local and national resources: https://pathwaystohopenetwork.org/resources/ Blog: https://pathwaystohopenetwork.org/blog-2/ FAQ: https://pathwaystohopenetwork.org/f-a-q/ ___________________________________________________________________________Parenting Teens Through The Hard from Unyielding is brought to you by Pathways to Hope Network. Friend, today, we're going to delve into a topic that might tug at the heartstrings a bit – the profound importance of vulnerability in parenting, particularly during these challenging teenage years. Together, we'll dive a little deeper into this concept I like to call "heart talk." A gentle, intimate dialogue rooted in trust and authenticity, a space where we can really connect with our teens. Because, you see, parenting during these years can be quite a tender journey. You and I are going to explore those areas where our teens find it tough to open up to us. It's a reminder for us, as parents, to acknowledge our own imperfections, set expectations that are filled with compassion, and, most importantly, honor the boundaries our teens set.Our teens are navigating a maze of changes and challenges, and we have the opportunity to be a comforting presence – a lighthouse guiding them through the waves. It's a call for us to understand that vulnerability isn't a weakness; it's a strength that fosters profound connections.Let's embrace the reality that parenting teenagers is no easy feat. Through the mist of discomfort, we are learning to be there for our teens with open hearts and arms. So, mama, let's gently step into the realm of vulnerability. Let's open up those channels of communication, even if it feels heavy. Because in those quiet, somber conversations lies the potential for healing and understanding. Both North Star and Copper Hills are owned by Universal Health Services, a publicly traded, Fortune 500 company that is the nation's largest psychiatric hospital chain. This hour deals with child abuse, sexual assault and suicide – and may not be appropriate for all listeners. Show-notes Episode 44Title: From Seed to Harvest: Finding Peace in The Process of Parenting TeensOur children are like flowers. They all bloom at different times. Maybe it's not their season? Maybe it is? Maybe all their growth is happening in the roots? Maybe they need more of something? Maybe they need less? Our job is to tend the garden and wait. This summer, in my stroll around the yard, I took a little inventory of how each of my plants was doing. I noticed the ones that seemed a little further along this year than they were this time last year and the ones that, after several years, were still not producing the way I thought they should. And suddenly, I was so struck by how much parenting teens and young adults is like tending a garden that I knew I had to share it with you. Join us as we discuss... Your child's zone. Starting at ground level. How to soften the seed. The DANGERS of overwatering. Getting to the roots. A recent poll I took asking parents with adult children what they would do differently. The three layers of behavior change. Who you'd like to become in this season. The difference between control and connection. How to shift the things you are focusing on. Remember, you're child is no longer the project; you are. Practice this for the next two weeks, and let me know how it's going: Spend a few days challenging yourself to focus on the positive (however small it may be) vs. the negative. The negative things shout and demand our attention, so they are easy to spot. Be a studier of the positive. Look for them and take the time to be grateful for them. Trust me; they are there. Show-notes Episode 36Title: 3 Benefits of Practicing Self-Care With A FriendFriendship is a key coping mechanism for life's tougher moments
It's 2001 and 14-year-old Anthony Haynes has died. He was one of some 50 kids who participated in a military-style, wilderness programme that was supposed to give troubled teens a new start. Hailed at the time as a local legend among parents struggling with their children, Anthony's mother had enrolled him after a spell of behavioural problems. Yet, the wilderness therapy Anthony experienced consisted of drill instructions and desert isolation- the sort of ‘tough love' rife within America's Troubled Teen Industry.Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen discuss the original ideas behind wilderness therapy, the experiences of survivors such as Paris Hilton, and the efficacy of the programmes of this unregulated industry. And, what are alternative interventions for reducing adolescent delinquency?CREDITS Presenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Hannah Ward Editors: Anna Lacey and Martin Smith Music: Matt Chandler Production Coordinator: Jonathan HarrisCommissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland#BadPeople_BBC
