While trusting in God's will for our lives is an essential part of the Christian walk, it's also one of the most difficult things we attempt to do as humans. When God tells us "no" to our prayers, we often struggle with how to respond. For many of us, it can serve as a catalyst to pull further away from God. But what if reframed how we internalize a "no" from God? Author Blake Long explores this topic in his new s book, "Taking No For an Answer: How to Respond When God Says No to Our Prayers." I love this topic, and I think it's one that will always be timely for both Christians and non-believers. For some, this is the very reason they either don't follow God or believe God doesn't exist. After all, how can a gracious and loving God allow for heartache, devastation and tragedy? If these are questions you've wrestled with (trust me, I have — plenty of times) I hope this conversation with Blake is helpful. We dive deep into some heavy stuff and I hope you'll be encouraged and learn some truth about the character and heart of God. ThinkSquad, have you ever had one of those moments where you wrap up a conversation with someone, and then you get back to your car and reflect back on it, and you think, "Man, I regret just about everything I just said. I think I came off like a royal jerk. Not good." I've been there. Many, many times. Maybe you have too. And one of the worst times to feel that way is after you've just shared the Gospel with someone. When you're evangelizing is one time when you especially don't want to come off like a douche. So how do you avoid this? How do we avoid being smug, yet without being so "humble" that we water down the message? To answer this question I brought on author and blogger Blake Long. Blake and I discuss his book Gospel Smugness, in which he argues that the Gospel is offensive enough without us unnecessarily adding to the offense. We discuss The importance of "reading the room" when sharing the Gospel How empathy factors in to evangelism (and why it's not a sin) What it really means to speak the truth in love Why "arrogant Calvinist" should be an oxymoron Don't miss this entertaining and informative conversation that will give you some solid principles for humble evangelism, with this up-and-coming Christian thinker, Blake Long. It's Relationship Wednesday with Dr. David Clarke. Are you struggling with a challenge in a particular relationship today? Our phones are wide open: 1-888-777-6810. Plus, do Christians need a “come to Jesus” moment over their flippant use of the “H-word”? Heresy is the word we're thinking about. Classically defined, heresy is “used to describe those theological errors so serious that it would deprive one of salvation.” When we stray from that definition we can get in the ditch real quick. Author and blogger Blake Long joins us to talk about it and his book, Gospel Smugness: Displaying Christlike Character in Evangelism. Tiger Talk Podcast by Northeast Mississippi Community College
As with the summer podcast schedule, the TigerTalk podcast is trying something different and delivering news, events and interviews every two weeks instead of weekly during the summer months of June and July. However, so that listeners feel like they are getting their monies worth from the podcast, this week includes three guests with events and happenings scattered throughout the podcast. So, be listening for those events between interviews. In the first part of the three-part podcast, Chassie Kelly talks a little about Orientation and why it is so important for students to register for Orientation and also take full advantage of their time on campus during the summer to get all their paperwork done and not be behind at the start of school. Kelly also talks in depth about the state's Complete2Compete program that helps former students find ways of finishing their degrees. From scholarships at the state level to checking coursework and seeing how close a person is to a degree -- and in some instances, some never asked for a diploma, Kelly talks about how the Complete2Compete process starts and how a person interested in checking on their degree progress would go about it. In the middle portion of the podcast, Blake Long stops in to talk about all the spring sports and some breaking professional news coming from athletics. Long breaks down the seasons for softball and baseball and brags on their success on the diamond and in the classroom while talking about the six former Tigers who are in the National Football League at the moment. In the final portion of the three-part podcast, Kurt Klynen, a director with Joy of PL (Joy of Professional Learning) stops in to give some insight into his presentation at the Mobile Learning Conference and also how he ended up in the United States from Belgium. The former physical education teacher now travels the world helping educators learn and develop their own styles for instructing students. Klynen talks about making learning fun and exciting not only for students but also for instructors as well. Between the interviews, Will Kollmeyer gives a rundown on the camps that will be happening at the college throughout the summer, traffic updates and everything that will be happening on the Northeast campus in the next two weeks.
Discern Daily Ep. 22 - What Happened to Convincing One Another? In order to move forward together, we need to create a healthier environment for dialogue. We shouldn't retreat to those who agree with us and shame those who disagree. We should seek to convince and persuade everyone. Blake Long composed a new article on his blog — Theology & Life — titled, "The New Intolerance," where he explains how the Left is redefining intolerance and how Christians ought to respond. [embed]https://youtu.be/zHhPojR99fA[/embed] Quotes From Blake Long "The big ideological elephant in the room is that the word intolerance has been, as a whole, redefined by the Left. They have taken that word and redefined it as acceptance or approval. If you don’t approve—no, even celebrate!—their views, then you are an intolerant bigot." Read Blake's full article here. Episode Highlights What happened to convincing one another to believe what we believe? When did it become a bad thing to think for ourselves and want to persuade others in the truth? Miley Cyrus recently provided a great example how to fail at convincing others when she licked a cake that included the words, "Abortion is Healthcare." [embed]https://twitter.com/scrowder/status/1136017501769256960[/embed] How hard should we try selling truth to others? How far should we go in trying to convince others what to believe? Shaming others into accepting new beliefs is not the way God leads us to communicate. Acts 17:1-9 is one relevant passage that reveals the Apostle Paul reasoning with non-believers. We must learn how to ask better questions, and we need to give others better feedback about what's not very convincing to us. Share Your Thoughts What are your thoughts on the matter? Have you seen the Left try to redefine intolerance, as Blake proposes in his article? How hard should we strive to reason with others from the Scriptures? Share this episode and leave your thoughts in the comments below.
