Don't Preach a CommentaryScript:This was the title of a Gospel-Centered Discipleship article by Michael C. Lyons — and I absolutely agree with him. He states three symptoms of Bible commentary preaching, and I want to interact with each of them. The first symptom is appealing to Hebrew and Greek. While I always look at the original languages, it's true that this often seems to be more helpful for the person in the pulpit than for the people in the pew. I want to preach in such a way that underscores the truth without undermining our English Bibles. The second symptom is quoting all the authors. If you've followed me, you can be sure that I've read a lot of material to study for my sermons. But I want to keep things fresh — and I'm encouraged to say what I have seen in Scripture with my own words. The third symptom is preaching nuts and bolts. I do practice big idea preaching, and this is a reminder that the congregation can easily get lost in the details. As I write my sermons, I need to guide my hearers to what's most important.Shownoteshttps://gcdiscipleship.com/article-feed/dont-preach-a-commentaryLinkshttps://www.diveindigdeep.com/https://newsletter.diveindigdeep.com/https://www.instagram.com/diveindigdeephttps://www.youtube.com/@soundwordsfm https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/soundwords

//EPISODE DESCRIPTIONDate: April 26, 2023 Name of podcast: Black Girl Theology Episode title and number: Ep. 5 | Let's Talk About Salvation If you've ever asked yourself something along the lines of, “How do I know that I'm really saved?” or “If I was really saved, why can't I stop committing this one sin?”, this episode is for you. Black Girl Theologian of the Week This week's BGT is Yana Jenay. Through teaching, writing, and disciplemaking, Yana desires to curate content that will help others think well and exchange a secular worldview for a biblical one. She has done this through a blog series called The Miseducation of Music, providing theological training and consultation on race and unity to churches and organizations, and walking alongside women through anxiety, depression, and harmful patterns of sin. You can also find her writings on platforms, such as Gospel-Centered Discipleship and The Jude 3 Project. She also wrote The Jude 3 Project's black apologetic's curriculum, Through the Eyes of Color. Yana is also the host of a podcast that I really enjoy, “Living Single with Yana Jenay”. This podcast is all about singleness. Not dating or how to prepare yourself for marriage but how to LIVE single. Though the culture (church culture included) has convinced us that marriage and romantic love is the pinnacle of life, in this podcast, Yana Jenay shares how her faith in Christ has caused her to embrace a new narrative. Her hope is to move the conversation about singleness past contentment to celebration and create a movement of #notthirsty singles. In today's podcast, Christa Neidig talks with Jeremy Writebol. Jeremy is the Lead Campus Pastor of Woodside Bible Church, Executive Director of Gospel-Centered Discipleship and Author of his new book, Pastor, Jesus Is Enough. In this conversation, Jeremy talks about pastoral encouragement in his new book. We hope you enjoy this conversation! https://www.vanderbloemen.com/blog/pastor-jesus-is-enough
Pastor Writer: Conversations on Writing, Reading, and the Christian Life
Jeremy Writebol has served in vocational ministry as a pastor for over 20 years. A graduate of Moody Bible Institute (B.A. 2001) he currently is the lead campus pastor of Woodside Bible Church's Plymouth, MI campus.Alongside his pastoral ministry, Jeremy is the Executive Director of the publishing and resourcing ministry Gospel-Centered Discipleship. He is married to Stephanie and is the father of two children. He joins me to talk about his new book: Pastor, Jesus Is Enough: Hope for the Weary, the Burned Out, and the Broken.
Jeremy Writebol speaks about his earliest sermon at a nursing home and the path that led him from there into the Lead Campus Pastor at Woodside Bible Church - Plymouth, Michigan and Executive Director at Gospel Centered Discipleship. They speak about the unique dynamics of pastoring at a multi-site church, sharing an outline with 13 other preachers, but responsibly and specifically creating localized sermons for each context. Jeremy and Mike speak about the advantages of sermon preparation in collaboration with other pastors, and the unique opportunities that the Christian calendar affords to prepare together for Easter, Christmas and Pentecost messages or series as an expression of gospel harmony. In his latest book, Pastor, Jesus Is Enough, Jeremy invites fellow pastors to hear the words of the risen Jesus in the seven letters within Revelation 2–3. The exhortations in Revelation 2–3 are directed to churches. But they also exhort pastors. In these seven letters, Jesus draws near to pastors—whether hurting or straying—and reminds them of his sufficiency. In these warnings and promises, Jesus has hard words for pastors. But they are words of life. Most of all, Jesus urges pastors to keep their focus on Him.Jeremy gives advice on preaching through the messages from Jesus in Revelation 2-3, and reminds us of the pastoral implications of this section - both to our own hearts and the hearts of our congregations. Taylor Turkington is the founder and director of BibleEquipping, which offers help for women in ministry via cohorts and coaching to grow in their fluency and gifting as Bible communicators - they help in honing their curriculum, planning teaching strategies, or thinking through theological and practical matters. She is also the author of the forthcoming book Trembling Faith: How a Distressed Prophet Helps Us Trust God in a Chaotic World, which is a journey through the timeless story of Habakkuk. She is very well-spoken and thoughtful, and speaks with Mike about power dynamics, the importance of getting and giving specific feedback as a means of growth. She also speaks about the variety of ways to show Christ from the Old Testament through various genres, and concludes with an off-the-cuff journey through Habakkuk's view of God's judgment and how that brings us to the cross of Christ and the final consumption. This episode will definitely help you to know why and how you should consider teaching the minor prophets! Taylor launched BibleEquipping to continue the work she had been doing for more than a decade training women to study and teach the Bible, and to do it with people she loved. Today she enjoys teaching, leading, and coaching she gets to do through BibleEquipping. Still, she stays awake at night dreaming and praying for new ways to equip women to serve the Church. And, let's be real, sometimes dreaming about flowers to plant in her garden.Previously, Taylor launched and directed the Women's Training Network for The Gospel Coalition and co-founded The Verity Fellowship for Western Seminary. Her experience includes living overseas, training women internationally, and working in the local church. She cares deeply about supporting and encouraging Bible teachers so they serve their local churches and communities even better equipped. She received an MA in Biblical and Theological Studies and Doctor of Ministry, focused in exposition of the Old Testament, from Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon, where she lives with her family. She also loves good chocolate and a great cup of tea! They got her through school.Taylor spends a good amount of time studying and writing about the Minor Prophets (particularly the 7th century ones), yet you'll often hear her pondering about healthy use of power, chronic illness, and everyday discipleship and evangelism. She also loves teaching and talking about homiletics (hence the DMin about it). She serves at her local church on the sermon review team and teaching in the women's ministry. You can see her videos and read her writing at The Gospel Coalition and Gospel-Centered Discipleship. You can reach out to her through BibleEquipping. Who here gets frustrated with unanswered prayers?! I'll be the first to raise my hand. If you do too, you must listen to this testimony! Mom of 3 and writer at Looking to the Harvest, Gospel-Centered Discipleship and many other faith publications, Brianna Lambert dives into her journey and how she was repeatedly brought back to a place that held both extremely joyous and agonizing life events. That place was Building 5255. To many, it was just a medical facility. But to her, Building 5255 has become a tangible memorial of God's faithfulness. She also tells us how unanswered prayers, especially in the midst of major trials, led to the greatest lessons she's had about who God is.As you listen, imagine Building 5255 as a metaphor for your life. Thriving in ministry is always more difficult than new youth pastors expect. The grind of ministry, the unusual schedule, and unfair complaints can wear the best of us down. In this episode, we talk with Jonathan Dodson about his book, The Unwavering Pastor, and what he's learned firsthand about applying the gospel to our own hearts. Discussion topics include, What do you mean by “unwavering pastor?” and what prompted you to write this book? The Unwavering Pastor has been out for a few months now. What are some common themes from conversations you've had with pastors who've reached out to you since reading it? One of the sentences that made me put the book down and pray was this line, “It is virtually impossible to make it through division without sinning, and Christ is gladly present to remedy that.” Could you share a little more about this. I really appreciated the story you told about your grandfather's words to you about truth telling, could share you that with us? Teenagers don't have very many good examples of conflict resolution. We live in a cancel culture that's fueled by internet rage. And yet, Jesus said blessed are the peacemakers. What counsel do you have for us about being peacemakers when others around us make that difficult? Recent Barna research reveals that 38% of Protestant Pastors (51% of Mainline Pastors) thought about quitting full-time ministry this past year. Tensions over politics, race, and covid have caused enormous divisions in society and have seemed to ramp up the discouragement of pastors in the process. That's why Jonathan Dodson's new book—and this conversation—are such a timely word and breath of fresh air. If you are a pastor or want a window into recent challenges in pastoral ministry or simply relate to all the tensions and divisions of the past two years, you'll love this conversation. Being a Christian means more than adopting a set of beliefs. To be a Christian is to be in a relationship with Jesus Christ and to be transformed by the Holy Spirit through that relationship. We call this discipleship. It should be the core part of every believer's identity. Sadly, we often have murky definitions or misguided ideas about what exactly discipleship means. That's why I'm glad to welcome Jonathan Dodson back to the show to discuss his book Gospel-Centered Discipleship. Jonathan and I discussed what discipleship means and how we tend to get it wrong in the church. He helps us to understand how discipleship involves our minds and our hearts, as well as how we can get down to the heart. Lastly, Jonathan explains what this kind of discipleship looks like in practice. Jonathan Dodson (M. DIV, TH. PMADs color a mother's whole world, and often nothing seems good. Saying “you're doing a good job,” feels empty. Worse, it may even make her feel hypocritical because of how she feels inside. Instead of offering her general statements about God or her motherhood, give her something specific: Comment on how patiently she handled her toddler's meltdown or how affectionate she is with her baby. Note other ways you see God at work in her life. Let her see that your life isn't all put together by sharing your own story of God's faithfulness in hard places. READ THE ENTIRE ESSAY HERE Momma Theologians Practical Takeaways Think back: In your own suffering, what have others said or done that was helpful to you? Why? What was unhelpful or hurtful? Why? Plan ahead: When you visit a new mom, add extra time to your schedule to do her dishes or listen to whatever she has on her mind. Whether visiting in her home or passing in the church hallway, think of questions you can ask her to probe how she's doing (keep these appropriate to the closeness of your relationship). Prepare encouragement: Who might you text or call today to encourage them in whatever circumstances they're going through (postpartum or otherwise)? What Scripture passage or theological truth seems fitting for their situation? Go in depth: I have written more about the church supporting mothers at Gospel Centered Discipleship (here) and general support on my blog (here). We live in a contentious time with a constant swirl of crises, controversies, and divisions. Christians often get caught up in the cycle of outrage in our reactionary culture. However, if we look at Scripture, then we will discover that Jesus desires us to be salt and light in the midst of cultural crises. My guest on today's show helps us to see how Jesus laid forth this vision in his Sermon on the Mount and how we can be empowered to live it out. His name is Jonathan Dodson and we discuss his latest book Our Good Crisis: Overcoming Moral Chaos with the Beatitudes. Jonathan Dodson is the founding pastor of City Life Church in Austin, TX which he started with his wife, Robie, and a small group of people. They have three children. He is also the founder of gcdiscipleship.com and author of a number of books including Gospel-Centered Discipleship, Our Good Crisis, and The Unbelievable Gospel. He enjoys listening to The War on Drugs, reading sci-fi, and going for walks. This week's conversation is a BIT different as it is an ACTUAL conversation. Our guest, Austin Gohn, generously suggested that we spend some time the similarities and intersections of two recent books. Austin's recent book, A Restless Age: How Saint Augustine Helps You Make Sense of Your Twenties is closely aligned with your “esteemed” host's, As I Recall: Discovering the Place of Memories In Our Spiritual Life.In this conversation, we talk about St. Augustine and how the restlessness of young adults today mirrors the restlessness of Augustine himself. What might Augustine have to say to our restlessness these days?We also tap into how memories and specifically the writing of a spiritual autobiography can be extremely helpful to our present and future spiritual growth.Austin Gohn (M.Div., Trinity School for Ministry) is one of the pastors of Bellevue Christian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has written for Fathom Mag, Gospel-Centered Discipleship, The Living Church (Covenant), and The Gospel Coalition. Find out more at www.austingohn.com.One BRILLIANT book we also mention is The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton, an immediate must-add for your reading list.Music by Robert EbbensCover Art by Eric Wright/Metamora Design
