Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
Private railroad corporations are failing their workers, their clients and the public in general. Their drive for profits means fewer workers, longer hours and neglecting basic safety protocols, unpredictable schedules for freight customers, which is devastating for farmers, and delays for passengers as well as deterioration of railway infrastructure. Clearing the FOG speaks with Maddock Thomas, the author of a new white paper, "Putting America Back on Track: The Case for a 21st Century Public Rail System," who explains the problems with the current system and how a public, electrified rail system would cost less, have a lower carbon footprint, and benefit workers and customers. Thomas is part of a new campaign, Public Rail Now. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.
Wojciech Przybylski and Miles R. Maftean explore how disinformation actors exploit loopholes to fuel their operations and profit financially. They also discuss the European Union's escalating efforts to combat this growing threat, from new regulations under the Digital Services Act to high-stakes battles with tech giants like Meta or Twitter.

Today's episode is the third in our series on decarbonizing the roots of value chains, where we're looking deep into supply chains that serve many industries. Previously we talked about green concrete and steel, and today we're turning to agriculture. Chris Marquis, a professor at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School sheds light on regenerative agriculture, a set of practices that restore farming ecosystems while having the potential to decarbonize. We'll also talk about his new book The Profiteers, where he discusses the need to hold companies accountable for the environmental and social externalities associated with their operations and supply chains, and he describes how some companies have engaged in what he calls “corporate gaslighting” to shift the focus of responsibility onto others.

In our latest episode we discuss with Professor Christopher Marquis, formerly at Harvard Business School and now at Cambridge Judge Business School, a world leading academic in the study of the business for good movement,. We explore the urgent need to shift from a shareholder-centric view of business to a stakeholder-oriented model that truly considers the environmental and social impacts of corporate actions. Chris shares his insights on the evolution of sustainability, summarized in his 3 books, from Better Business to the most recent, “The Profiteers” . We discuss the pivotal role of movements like the B Corp in remaking capitalism and the challenges businesses face in this transition. Then, discussing the second book, Mao and the Markets, we dive into the complexities of the Chinese economic system and what Western businesses can learn from China's approach to sustainability and long-term planning. His latest research, summed in the book “The Profiteers-How Business Privatizes Profits and Socializes Costs” unveils the concept of the "Corporate Free Lunch," explaining how businesses have historically externalized their costs, pushing them onto society and the environment, and what can be done to change this extractive paradigm. Learn about pioneering companies leading the way toward a regenerative model of capitalism and how the concept of positive externalities is shaping the future of responsible business. From Natura's innovative integrated profit and loss statement to the broader implications of European Union policies, Chris provides a roadmap for how businesses and consumers alike can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world. The Profiteers How Business Privatizes Profits and Socializes Costs By Christopher Marquis https://amzn.to/3R0CbbB An exposé of how society pays for corporations' "free lunch" and the cost of environmental damage, low wages, systemic discrimination, and cheap goods. In an age when business leaders solemnly profess dedication to principles of environmental and social justice, Christopher Marquis's provocative investigation into the real costs of doing business reveals the way that leaders of the corporate world gaslight to evade responsibilities by privatizing profits and socializing costs. “Who pays?” for the resulting climate and environmental damage, racism, low wages, and cheap goods: the average citizen and the taxpayer. By bringing to light ideas that today are on the fringe but rapidly making their way into the mainstream, Marquis outlines a new regenerative paradigm for business in society. He tells of a group of pioneers trying to not just reform but transform the way business is conducted all over the world. By taking novel actions to reimagine business operations in responsible ways, minimize their negative impacts, and create new ways for business to properly absorb their hidden costs, these leaders provide blueprints to move the needle on vexing social and environmental issues. What's in it for leaders of the corporate world? The model of reform presented provides clear guidance on how to get ahead of the curve as an emerging economic order is formed. No business can lead from the front if it is morally-backward looking. History has shown time and again that those who get out in front of emerging changes in our social and environmental landscape protect themselves from inevitable eclipse.
We are facing a tragedy of the commons — and have been for a while. At worst, businesses are taking advantage of the planet and society and aren't holding themselves fully responsible for the damage they are doing. When companies release excessive carbon into the air or keep wages low, the resulting environmental damage and societal burdens are paid for by the average citizen and the taxpayer. Christopher Marquis explores this reality in his new book, The Profiteers. He explains the systemic issues underlying today's most pressing global challenges, from climate change to inequality, shedding light on the ways in which businesses privatize gains while socializing costs. But at the heart of Marquis's work lies a call to action for leaders across sectors to embrace a new vision of business. The Profiteers serves not only as a wake-up call to the inherent flaws of our current system but provides a roadmap for a more sustainable and equitable future. We invited Christopher Marquis, Cambridge University professor and author of other books (including Mao and Markets: The Communist Roots of Chinese Enterprise and Better Business: How the B Corp Movement Is Remaking Capitalism), to discuss how The Profiteers exposes the hidden toll of environmental damage, low wages, and systemic discrimination, calling for a paradigm shift in business practices. The national tragedy of more drug overdose deaths, suicides, and homicides won't be solved “if we have to look at each other through the prism of race,” activist Bob Woodson says.“There are people who are profiting from the grievance of our society, and we must challenge these racial profiteers,” says Woodson, an author and founder of the Washington-based Woodson Center. Some “try to promote” the racial challenges in America, Woodson says, citing two examples.“Black Lives Matter ... comes along and collects $100 million in white guilt money," he says. "Ibram X. Kendi at Boston University collects $48 million to do anti-racist research.” In Woodson's view, "race has been a distraction” to addressing the real problems confronting poor communities.Since the 1980s, Woodson, who is black, has worked to address issues plaguing poor communities across the country. As a young man, he was part of the civil rights movement. But, finding himself in disagreement with some aspects of the movement, Woodson says he “began to work on behalf of low-income people of all races.” Now, at 86, Woodson says, The Woodson Center gives a voice "to the voiceless grassroots leaders who are laboring in these communities confronting drugs and violence and out-of-wedlock births.” Woodson joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to expose the harmful effects of a focus on race on black communities and to explain how the strategy of The Woodson Center transforms lives and entire neighborhoods. Jordan Fried was fully living the entrepreneur life in Puerto Rico... until the attack in Israel happened on 10/7. Then, Jordan found himself chartering, and then boarding, a plane to deliver aid to Israel. To make an impact on the ground in Israel, Jordan and his cofounders started their nonprofit Israel Friends— and casually seeded it themselves with a couple million bucks. But as Jordan will tell you, you don't need a million dollars to make a difference. Jordan walks through the strategy he used to build a network of helpers of all kinds, and how you can too. Before that, Jordan tells Nicole what it was like being in Israel in the wake of the attacks, and stories from the survivors he's met. "War is good for business." So reads a quote from an arms industry executive in a recent Reuters article titled "At London arms fair, global war fears are good for business" about Europe's biggest arms show, the biennial Defence and Security Equipment International. You will probably be unsurprised to learn that Reuters does not name the war profiteer whose quote inspired their headline. Reading by Tim Foley.
The British billionaire-owned newspaper The Telegraph has an appalling new article out which reads like a paid advertisement for a missile manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The title even sounds like it was written by a marketing team: "A war-winning swarm missile will knock China out of Taiwan - fast", subtitled "Rapid Dragon is a military gamechanger that provides the US Air Force with a crucial edge in the Pacific". Reading by Tim Foley.

Profiteers are taking over health care in the United States and running it into the ground - firing health professionals and closing hospitals. Dr. Ana Malinow, a lead organizer of the group, National Single Payer, fears we are witnessing the demise of a model national insurance, Medicare, as the 58th anniversary of its passage was celebrated on July 31. Dr. Malinow joins Clearing the FOG to discuss the state of health care in the US. She provides a strong critique of state legislative efforts and the two Medicare for All bills in the House and Senate, HR 3421 and S 1655. Dr. Malinow outlines what people are doing across the country to build grassroots power to win a national health insurance, Medicare for All, or a national health system. What is up to my ungovernable umbrellabirds and munificent macaroni penguins! Welcome to the BNP and thanks so much for tuning in. We got a rip roarin' inferno of an ep for ya this week, so strap in and hold onto yer butt! Zany audio tidbits, you ask? For days. Cameo from neighbor Reinaldo? Yup. The veggies this ep constellate around a timely and highly relevant topic: just how 'wild' are all these generationally devastating wildfires? In 2018, California had 2 million acres torched (and the location of the fires oddly tracked to the state's proposed high speed rail line). In 2019-2020, Australia had 60 million acres scorched, and the world first heard the term "megafire." Now in 2023, Canada is undergoing its own generationally destructive wildfires, with over 11 million acres destroyed, with the conflagrations continuing as of this writing. Extra strange is satellite footage showing the fires starting all at the same time. That's some seriously coordinated lightning... This episode asks the ever-critical question: cui bono? To whom are these 'wild'fires a benefit? Turns out, a lot of unsavory entities get rich off wildfires, and the bigger the blaze, the bigger the profits. Is it so crazy to think that soulless profiteers would ignite fires intentionally in order to turn a hefty profit? Arson has been around a long time. There are also political and cultural interests who benefit from wildfires, specifically those who trade in the "climate action" grift (militaries and corporations get to pollute, destroy and exploit whatever Earth they want, while you and I get digital carbon footprint trackers, fake meat and cricket patties). We also examine some of the cutting edge technology in fire-dropping drones, of which there is a shit ton, and in fact the market seems to be booming. Finally, we hear from friend of show Jonathan Glowacki about the real sustainability he observed at a mac nut farm in Guatemala, and we read an article by Whitney Webb about Natural Asset Corporations. During President Trump's first impeachment, the press force-fed America the idea that Alexander Vindman was the pinnacle of honor and patriotism. Now, newly-obtained documents show Vindman working as a foreign operative and war profiteer. Charlie and Jack Posobiec dissect that story, then take a look at the latest manifestation of Antifa extremism: Coordinated domestic terrorism in an attempt to sabotage a police training facility. Jack explains how this terrorism is a test run for 2024 antics, and how stopping it will require the right to adopt the same level of moral confidence already possessed by the left.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ProPublica reporter David McSwane tells the story of people and businesses that profited from the COVID-19 pandemic. He found the government awarded lucrative contracts to many people with a history of fraudulent business practices documented in public records, if anyone had bothered to check. His new book is Pandemic, Inc.
