POPULARITY
Many theologians would argue that more than often Christians in the West are immature, meaning that our walk doesn’t always match our talk. Some would even go as far as arguing that the average North American Christian is about 3,000 Bible verses overweight, because the way many leaders approach maturity is to assume that knowledge produces it. But since when? Yes, it’s wonderful that people understand what they believe, but knowledge in and of itself is not a hallmark of Christian maturity. As Paul says, knowledge puffs up. Love, by contrast, builds up. And some of the most Biblically literate people in Jesus’ day were passed over when Jesus was selecting his disciples. You see, the goal is not to know, but to do something with what you know. Today, we are going to take a deep dive the process of spiritual formation and holistic discipleship by answering questions such as, “Does our popular understanding of discipleship produce some of the unhealthiness, stagnation, and decline we see all around us in the church?” and “What if you could do something about it by rethinking what you mean by discipleship in the first place?” Joining us today to for a very rich discussion around these matters is the Lead Pastor of Bloom Church in Portland, Oregon - Colby Maier! Colby is a man who seeks to help people discover who God created them to be as he believes God created each person with a unique potential to make a profound impact on their world, and to leave lasting change that will influence generations to come. Each day is filled with meaning when you know who you are, why you’re here, and where you’re going. We hope and pray that through today’s conversation you would truly discover who God created you to be so that you too can activate your faith and bring positive and lasting change to this world. Today, I'm sharing a recent conversation with Andrew Arndt about his book Streams in the Wasteland. In it, he shares the ancient wisdom of the desert fathers and mothers who journeyed to the wilderness to seek a closer journey with Christ. Andrew shares some of the parallels between their experience with Rome then and our experience today. I was first introduced to the desert fathers and mothers in the late 1980s when I read Henri Nouwen's The Way of the Heart: Desert Spirituality and Contemporary. It was his sharing of the wisdom of the desert fathers and mothers, especially about solitude, silence, and prayer, that launched me on a very different spiritual trajectory than the frantically busy one I'd been on up until then. The metaphor of fire is common among the spiritual masters. Indeed, ever-greater union with God has often been understood to be accompanied by purification and illumination. But that process is by no means linear. There is no straightforward progression from one to the next. They are, in fact, different ways of talking about one and the same journey—the journey of surrendering to the Spirit’s total work. We are purified and illuminated as we are drawn into union with God . . . we are brought into union as we are illuminated and purified . . . we are illuminated as we are purified and made one with the Lover of our souls. When I first gave my life to Jesus, I remember saying to him, “Wherever you want me, whatever you want, however and whenever you want it—I am all yours.” Honestly, I think that kind of response is just what love, in fact, does. If you’ve ever fallen in love, you know what I’m talking about. Love gives itself, and it gives itself completely. That’s what marriage is: I am yours, and you are mine. And when the love of Jesus touches us, when his call comes to us, it awakens a similar response—I am all yours! Liturgy for Small Groups? What does this look like? Rusty Gates is a fellow artist & explorer who has been attracted to liturgical forms of worship. His path led him to be a part of BLOOM Church in Denver, a garden of resurrection planted by Michael & Lisa Gungor & their longtime friend Andrew Arndt. BLOOM considers itself to be a "network of house churches" where the emphasis on community & worship is expressed through what most churches call "small groups." But these are no ordinary small groups. Guided by the question "If this was someone's only encounter with the church, would this be enough?", the leaders of BLOOM have been compelled to embrace a more liturgical & sacramental approach to their small group gatherings. And eventually, Rusty was asked to come on staff to lead & guide these house churches. Now in a different city & season of life, Rusty has seen a need in the world of podcasts & decided to fill it, resulting in the creation of the (Audio) Liturgy Podcast. "ALP", as I like to call it, is a unique & highly collaborative approach to experiencing liturgy. And Rusty's been so kind to let me include one of these liturgies within this episode! What I love about Rusty is his passion to explore what liturgy can look like outside of the Sunday morning event. And I'm so glad he came on the podcast to tell us a little about that. I hope you enjoy our conversation. __________________________________ [ SHOW NOTES ] https://twitter.com/rustyjgates http://www.praxisconference.com http://www.bloomchurchdenver.com http://www.audioliturgypodcast.org Submit a contribution to the (Audio) Liturgy Podcast: http://www.audioliturgypodcast.org/submit/ If you have a moment, please rate & review this podcast in iTunes!

What if our exhaustion, burnout, and pain are an invitation into a more vibrant faith? We talk with Andrew Arndt about how Christianity got co-opted by power and privilege, and how we can find our way back to the radical way of Jesus by learning from the desert fathers and mothers, who needed to learn the same things we do: to live radically, humanly, and beautifully in a spiritually desolate and confusing time.Andrew's most recent book is Streams in the Wasteland: Finding Spiritual Renewal with the Desert Fathers & Mothers.Andrew Arndt is the lead pastor of New Life East, one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs.
