It's a joy to be back podcasting after a long hiatus, and an even greater joy to interview Andrew Arndt about his latest book A Strange and Gracious Light. Andrew is the Pastor of New Life East in Colorado Springs, author of several books, and the host of the Essential Church Podcast. This is a remarkable book and I hope you'll read it. Andrew Arndt is back on the podcast today. He's a pastor and author who's challenging how we typically understand the gospel. His new book, "A Strange and Gracious Light," explores what it means to see Jesus as a living presence that intersects with our real, complicated lives. We'll discuss how the gospel isn't just about personal salvation or afterlife insurance, but a transformative story that speaks directly into our current cultural moment - with all its complexity, pain, and potential. Andrew brings a fresh, albeit an ancient perspective on how Jesus encounters us in our everyday struggles, political tensions, and personal challenges. This conversation is about reimagining the good news of Jesus as something far more expansive and immediate than we've traditionally understood. We'll explore what it means to experience Christ's presence in a way that's both deeply personal and broadly transformative. So join us as we facilitate encounters with the living God. Andrew Arndt is the Lead Pastor of New Life East (one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs), where he also hosts the Essential Church podcast, a weekly conversation designed to strengthen the thinking of church and ministry leaders. Prior to joining New Life's team, he served as Lead Pastor of Bloom Church: a neo-monastic, charismatic, liturgical, justice-driven network of house churches in Denver. He received his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, is working on his Doctor of Ministry at Western Theological Seminary, and has written for Missio Alliance, Patheos, The Other Journal, and Mere Orthodoxy. He lives in the Springs with his wife Mandi and their four kids.Andrew's Book:A Strange and Gracious LightSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Pastor and author Andrew Arndt talks with Nathan Foster about how the stories and examples of the desert fathers and mothers move from exhaustion, burnout, and pain into a more vibrant faith.
Andrew Arndt had an airtight plan for his life: keep preaching at the same church as lead pastor until his final breath. But when God led him out of his small, artsy community into a megachurch, while grateful for his new assignment, he found himself disoriented and mourning the loss of his former role. That's when a friend recommended, “You should read the Desert Fathers and Mothers.” So he did, and it changed everything. The Desert fathers show us that in the midst of disorientation is an invitation一not to suppress what's inside, but to welcome God into it. Andrew explains to Steve Carter some of his key learnings, which will help anyone struggling through a disorienting season: How simple gratitude reconnects us to God Why embracing the mystery of God frees us from ego-driven expectations How to preach deeply and supplant the superficiality of our age How to replace perfunctory preaching with Scripture-sparked fire Many of us long to benefit from the wisdom of the Desert Fathers, but aren't sure where to begin. This episode, along with Andrew's book, Streams in the Wasteland, will plunge you into their world. Chances are, like Andrew, you'll never be the same. FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
For centuries, leaders in the church have wrestled with the temptation to tie our identities to what we produce in ministry, or who we are as pastors, rather than who we are in Christ. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Andrew Arndt. Andrew is a teaching pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, and the author of Streams in the Wasteland. Together, Andrew and Jason explore practices that help us experience refreshment for our souls as the Spirit strips away some of the inessentials and distractions, and grounds are identity in Jesus.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Andrew Arndt on deconstruction and spiritual formation: "We need to approach all the strippings of our lives, even the deconstructions of our lives, with a confidence that God is not just on the other side of it, but God is in the midst of it, and he's making a new creation out of us"Andrew Arndt on ministry leaders and meaningful relationships: "What I think is especially challenging for pastors is understanding the kinds of relationships that we need to have that that will make our lives whole and sound"Andrew Arndt on avoiding a codependent relationship with your ministry: "When I don't 'need' the ministry, I can really serve the ministry. When I don't 'need' the platform that God has given me, then I can really use the platform in a way that is more about God and other people than it is about me."-------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? This is part two of my conversation with Andrew Arndt about his recently released book, Stream in the Wasteland: Finding Spiritual Renewal with the Desert Fathers and Mothers. Andrew is the author of several books including All Flame. Today, I'm sharing a recent conversation with Andrew Arndt about his book Streams in the Wasteland. In it, he shares the ancient wisdom of the desert fathers and mothers who journeyed to the wilderness to seek a closer journey with Christ. Andrew shares some of the parallels between their experience with Rome then and our experience today. I was first introduced to the desert fathers and mothers in the late 1980s when I read Henri Nouwen's The Way of the Heart: Desert Spirituality and Contemporary. It was his sharing of the wisdom of the desert fathers and mothers, especially about solitude, silence, and prayer, that launched me on a very different spiritual trajectory than the frantically busy one I'd been on up until then. Andrew Arndt is the lead pastor of New Life East, one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs. Prior to joining New Life's team, he served as the lead pastor of Bloom Church, a network of house churches in Denver. He is the host of the Essential Church podcast, a weekly conversation designed to strengthen the thinking of church and ministry leaders. Andrew received his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and is currently working on his DMin with Western Theological Seminary. He has written for Missio Alliance, Patheos, The Other Journal, and Mere Orthodoxy. He is the author of Streams in the Wasteland and All Flame. Is there any hope for humanity? Has God given up on us? Andrew Arndt is his new book Streams in the Wasteland tackles these questions. He points us to the desert fathers and mothers who faced some of the same questions in the 3rd century, less than 300 years from Christ's death and resurrection. It's a great and hope filled conversation with Andrew. Andrew Arndt is the Lead Pastor of New Life East (one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs), where he also hosts the Essential Church podcast, a weekly conversation designed to strengthen the thinking of church and ministry leaders.
Pastor Andrew Arndt shares from his book "Streams in the Wasteland: Finding Spiritual Renewal with the Desert Fathers and Mothers." He talks about what we can learn about embracing the radical way of Jesus to save our souls.
Andrew Arndt offers a fresh book on the ever fascinating wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers in his new book called Streams in the Wasteland (releases September 3rd). In this conversation we talk about his journey towards writing this book, why the desert way is accessible to us here and now, and how these monastics were able to be at one and the same time harsh and gentle and why, in the end, it was all grace. Humble Love Conquers the World!Happy Maundy Thursday! You are not going to want to miss Pastor Andrew Arndt as he chats about what Jesus was doing on this powerful day of Holy Week! Here's the scoop on the video:On Thursday of Holy Week, Christians around the world celebrate what is known as “Maundy Thursday.” The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin “mandatum” which means “new”—as in the “new commandment” Jesus gave his disciples to “love one another” in John 13.Do you know how Jesus showed them his love? By washing their feet… think of it… the Master himself… King of the universe… Lord of all… stooped THAT low to show his love—and then told them to do the same! In fact, he said that through this kind of love, the world would know that they were his disciples! What does it look like to love like THAT? In our homes, with our kids, our spouses? Let's talk! Andrew Arndt was the pastor of Bloom, a church plant in Denver (which he led with Michael Gungor) before coming to New Life as an associate pastor and the lead pastor at our most recent church campus, New Life East. His new book, "All Flame: Entering into the Life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" releases Sept. 15 and is available for pre-order on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/All-Flame-Entering-Father-Spirit/dp/1641581514. Imagine your heart catching flame like a burning bush in a desert. Imagine that flame coursing through your veins and infusing every cell in your body with eternal energy. Imagine the God who lit up the eyes of Mother Teresa, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Rich Mullins lighting up your life. Andrew Arndt reintroduces us to God in three Persons―Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You’ll discover how this God of the Bible is already in touch with your life, and that touch has the capacity to do great things for, in, and through you. Christianity will never be boring again. Most books that engage the life of the Trinity are written at an academic level, focusing on fine points of theological distinction. Andrew writes in a way that is both mystical and missional: The Father, Son, and Spirit are at work in you in unseen ways, and yet their work in you will emanate from you to transform the world for the better. This is an energizing take on a key concept of the faith.

When I first gave my life to Jesus, I remember saying to him, “Wherever you want me, whatever you want, however and whenever you want it—I am all yours.” Honestly, I think that kind of response is just what love, in fact, does. If you’ve ever fallen in love, you know what I’m talking about. Love gives itself, and it gives itself completely. That’s what marriage is: I am yours, and you are mine. And when the love of Jesus touches us, when his call comes to us, it awakens a similar response—I am all yours! Liturgy for Small Groups? What does this look like? Rusty Gates is a fellow artist & explorer who has been attracted to liturgical forms of worship. His path led him to be a part of BLOOM Church in Denver, a garden of resurrection planted by Michael & Lisa Gungor & their longtime friend Andrew Arndt. BLOOM considers itself to be a "network of house churches" where the emphasis on community & worship is expressed through what most churches call "small groups." But these are no ordinary small groups. Guided by the question "If this was someone's only encounter with the church, would this be enough?", the leaders of BLOOM have been compelled to embrace a more liturgical & sacramental approach to their small group gatherings. And eventually, Rusty was asked to come on staff to lead & guide these house churches. Now in a different city & season of life, Rusty has seen a need in the world of podcasts & decided to fill it, resulting in the creation of the (Audio) Liturgy Podcast. "ALP", as I like to call it, is a unique & highly collaborative approach to experiencing liturgy. And Rusty's been so kind to let me include one of these liturgies within this episode! What I love about Rusty is his passion to explore what liturgy can look like outside of the Sunday morning event. And I'm so glad he came on the podcast to tell us a little about that. I hope you enjoy our conversation. __________________________________ [ SHOW NOTES ] https://twitter.com/rustyjgates http://www.praxisconference.com http://www.bloomchurchdenver.com http://www.audioliturgypodcast.org Submit a contribution to the (Audio) Liturgy Podcast: http://www.audioliturgypodcast.org/submit/ If you have a moment, please rate & review this podcast in iTunes!

What if our exhaustion, burnout, and pain are an invitation into a more vibrant faith?
