Ep. 298 Andrew Arndt Returns - How the Story of Jesus Changes the Way We See Everything

Shifting Culture

Andrew Arndt is back on the podcast today. He's a pastor and author who's challenging how we typically understand the gospel. His new book, "A Strange and Gracious Light," explores what it means to see Jesus as a living presence that intersects with our real, complicated lives. We'll discuss how the gospel isn't just about personal salvation or afterlife insurance, but a transformative story that speaks directly into our current cultural moment - with all its complexity, pain, and potential. Andrew brings a fresh, albeit an ancient perspective on how Jesus encounters us in our everyday struggles, political tensions, and personal challenges. This conversation is about reimagining the good news of Jesus as something far more expansive and immediate than we've traditionally understood. We'll explore what it means to experience Christ's presence in a way that's both deeply personal and broadly transformative. So join us as we facilitate encounters with the living God. Andrew Arndt is the Lead Pastor of New Life East (one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs), where he also hosts the Essential Church podcast, a weekly conversation designed to strengthen the thinking of church and ministry leaders. Prior to joining New Life's team, he served as Lead Pastor of Bloom Church: a neo-monastic, charismatic, liturgical, justice-driven network of house churches in Denver. He received his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, is working on his Doctor of Ministry at Western Theological Seminary, and has written for Missio Alliance, Patheos, The Other Journal, and Mere Orthodoxy. He lives in the Springs with his wife Mandi and their four kids.Andrew's Book:A Strange and Gracious LightSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. It is the last command that Jesus left with His disciples and one of the main concerns of the church today.   Welcome to Run With Horses! My name is Norman and my goal is to help you thrive as a follower of Jesus. The spiritual life is both incredibly simple and potentially the most difficult part of your life. God invites you to live intentionally and on His mission. It's very cool that we can do that together!   Last week we looked at maturity the essential church. The main point is that we have to be changing if we are maturing and becoming more like Jesus. He is working a wonderful transformation in our lives.   Quick review: MY WORKING DEFINITION OF CHURCH A CHURCH is a group of Jesus' disciples who worship Him in spirit and truth, humbly offering their lives as living sacrifices, together living out the mission of Jesus as His witnesses to the world, by sharing the gospel and making disciples through teaching obedience to His commands as they edify and equip others to join them on His mission.   It is my view that this process embracing the mission of Jesus and becoming a disciple maker is an important part of how God transforms you.   We started session one with the topic SEEDS: What's our Disciple Making DNA? Matthew 4:19: "Follow me," Jesus declared, "and I will make you fishers of men." Jesus doesn't just call disciples, He equips them to make more disciples. We moved on to session two with the topic TREES: What is your vision of Maturity? Hebrews 5:11-14 11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Stages of Spiritual Growth – Dead, Infant, Child, Young Adult, Parents, Grandparents And Today we are ready for Session 3: Forests: How Do We Multiply? Big Idea: Multiplication is the result of putting disciple making into practice. Disciple making is contagious! As we mature as disciple makers, we equip others to do the same, resulting in a multiplication effect: the growth of the local church and planting new churches near and far. **** Starting an Evangelistic Bible Study   Make a list and pray for it Make your list of who you want to talk with and pray for them Find a partner and make a plan Try to find a partner to do this with, and make a plan for the next few steps Schedule it and reach out to people Come up with a schedule for your meet-ups, make contacts with people using the conversations checklist and invite them to the meetup. Essential Church, message from Pastor Steve Swisher Shownotes Main Points - Analogy of NCAA tournament seeding to have congregation think about where they rank themselves among fellow churchgoers (1-300) - Discusses how people can move from being self-focused to open-handed and thinking of others - Wonders if it takes a near death experience to prompt this change - Notes natural human tendency towards selfishness and the socialization process around sharing - Observes that greater love does not necessarily reduce selfishness, as in marriages - Discusses how social media can provide social interaction while allowing self-curation Bible Examples - Outlines Paul's teaching to Corinthians about constructive speech/actions - Gives examples of Bible figures having outlook changed after encountering God (Job, Isaiah, Peter, Paul) Conclusion - Wants people to have frequent encounters with Jesus to see themselves as humble and willing to serve others - Prays that people experience lasting change in outlook and happily participate in church community   Discussion Questions 1. Pastor Steve analyzes the process of how people can move from being self-focused to open-handed and caring about others. Do you agree that it often requires a major life event to prompt that change? What other factors could contribute? 2. Several Biblical figures like Job, Isaiah and Paul are highlighted as experiencing humility after encounters with God. What do you think Pastor Steve wants you to take away from those stories? Why focus on humility specifically? 5. Pastor Steve wants you to have transformative divine encounters that shift their perspective through worship, service or hardship. Which of those avenues seems most promising to you? How does your faith prompt perspective shifts?

Today we focus on identifying spiritual maturity in the Essential Church.   Welcome to Run With Horses! My name is Norman and my goal is to help you thrive as a follower of Jesus. The spiritual life is both incredibly simple and potentially the most difficult part of your life. God invites you to live intentionally and on His mission. It's very cool that we can do that together!   Last week we looked at an overview of disciple making as part of the fundamental DNA of the essential church. Today we consider maturity, particularly the idea of spiritual transformation. We have to be changing if we are maturing and becoming more like Jesus. It is my view that this process of accepting the mission of Jesus and becoming a disciple maker is at least part of what God uses to transform you. Think about the questions we are left with after thinking through the definition of church.   How do you worship God? Spirit and Truth gives some guidance. Truth should lead us to look at the Bible for answers. What does the life of a living sacrifice look like? Humility is there. What is sacrifice? Probably want to look at the OT for some insight. How do we get together? When, where, how often, what do we do? The NT gives some idea of the big picture, Acts and Paul's letters need to be investigated. What is the mission of Jesus? The Gospels give His words directly, Acts gives the early churches application of them. What is the Gospel and how do we best communicate it in our location to the people around us? Back to the NT. How do we make disciples in our context? What are Jesus commands? How do we edify others? Who is responsible to do this? Struggling with these Questions in your particular context forces you to consider what God says about each issue and what is left to adjust for your time and place. Struggling to Live what you believe is the context for lasting spiritual growth and transformation as we all learn to trust Him more. We started session one with the topic SEEDS: What's our Disciple Making DNA? We move on to session two with the topic: TREES: What is your vision of Maturity?

It will be no surprise for regular listeners to know that we will begin with Disciple Making in the Essential Church.   Welcome to Run With Horses! My name is Norman and my goal is to help you thrive as a follower of Jesus. The spiritual life is both incredibly simple and potentially the most difficult part of your life. God invites you to live intentionally and on His mission. It's very cool that we can do that together!   I have been thinking about the idea of Essential Ecclesiology for awhile now. Last week we concluded with my working definition of the essential church.     MY WORKING DEFINITION OF CHURCH A CHURCH is a group of Jesus' disciples who worship Him in spirit and truth, humbly offering their lives as living sacrifices, together living out the mission of Jesus as His witnesses to the world, by sharing the gospel and making disciples through teaching obedience to His commands as they edify and equip others to join them on His mission.   There are definitely things that are only implied and not spelled out. There are definitely questions a church will need to answer for itself based on its local context and culture. Specifically, What do you not see in this definition? There is not much to tell HOW to do these things. Let's make a list. I believe that disciple making is at the center of what it means to be the church. Many have produced catechisms to help teach the foundational truths of God's Word. What is the chief end of man is the way one talks about our purpose. The answer, the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. ("Glorify" does not mean make glorious. It means [to] reflect or display as glorious. Other words you could use for "end" are "goal" or "purpose". - John Piper) HOW do we glorify God? Primarily by humble obedience to His commands. You cannot glorify God and do your own thing! Disciple Making is at the center of what it means to be a follower of Jesus so a simple connection would be to say that we best glorify God when we are most engaged in his mission of reconciliation through relational disciple making. I will be at a retreat this weekend focusing on discipleship, it's perfect timing so I will start today going over some of the material I am preparing for the retreat. We start session one with the topic SEEDS: What's our Disciple Making DNA? What is DNA? ****** Thanks for joining me again today! How is your church doing at fulfilling it's biblical purpose? Jesus declared to Peter: “I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18).That's a guarantee from the Son of God. In fact, the church is the only institution that Christ promises to build. Not nation-states, not political parties, not para-church Christian ministries—just the church. The word “church” can be defined a few ways:The building you drive by down the street where people gather to worshipThe visible body of professing Christians, which contains “wheat and tares” (the professing church, Matthew 13)The invisible body of genuine believers from every tribe and nation (the true church)Aligning ourselves with Christ's mission to build His church needs to be the believer's priority. There's a place for pushing back on the depravity revolution in our culture, working for political change, advocating for justice. But being a sanctified member of a sound local church should be top priority for Christians. That is God's design and decree.Paul wrote to Timothy: “I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15).This weekend on The Christian Worldview, as we prepare to gather for TCW Movie Night on Saturday, Sept. 9 to watch The Essential Church, we're going to hear from God's word and some of the great preachers of God's word as they point us to love and protect “the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth”.

Like many pastors and churches, when COVID-19 hit the news and shut down orders spread across the globe, Tim Stephens and Fairview Baptist Church stopped holding services and assessed the situation. Not knowing what they were dealing with, they took every step necessary to use wisdom and prudence in their decision-making. But as it became clear that this virus was not all that the government made it out to be, Tim's convictions stirred to re-open the church and begin preaching and holding worship services. His decision to re-open had a wide ripple effect that ultimately led to his imprisonment. As a husband, and a father to 8 children, Tim and Raquel Stephens had so much to lose. As fines piled up and public pressure mounted, Tim's convictions remained anchored. To end the whole ordeal all he had to do was sign an agreement stating that he would not go back and re-open the church. He refused. This interview is the entire story in his own words.

GUEST: TRAVIS ALLEN, pastor, Grace Church (Greeley, CO)The church is the body of true believers across the world that Christ redeemed for eternity through the shedding of His own blood in order to represent and proclaim the excellencies of Christ to a rebellious world. The church and its message of salvation through faith in Christ is the only hope for sinners. This is why the church is essential.Referring to Himself, Christ told the apostle Peter, “upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18).Christ promises to build His church, to grow His body of believers, and that the powers of death and darkness (i.e. Satan) will not overpower it.The Bible says that Satan is the god of this world and he is active in deceiving nations, governing authorities, and peoples. The church is the primary obstacle for his deceit, which is why he incites governing authorities to persecute the church and introduces “tares” (false Christians, see Matthew 13) to lead it to compromise. This weekend on The Christian Worldview, pastor Travis Allen of Grace Church in Greeley, CO joins us to discuss the just-released documentary film, The Essential Church, which chronicles how three churches—Grace Community Church in Los Angeles and two churches in Canada—defied government mandates during the Covid pandemic, continuing to gather to worship because they understood that government does not have the God-given authority to dictate how a church worships. We will play audio clips from the film and then discuss some current events, including how a young believer was arrested in Wisconsin without warning for preaching on the street at a “drag queen” event, while other Evangelical churches are dressing themselves up in Star Wars, Barbie, or Toy Story themes for “At the Movies” sermon series.--------------------------------The Essential Church movie:When COVID-19 restrictions force Grace Community Church to close its doors indefinitely, the Los Angeles-based congregation takes a courageous stance and sues the government. This feature-length documentary explores the Church's unwavering determination to exercise its constitutional rights and ecclesiastical authority to serve its assembly through faith and fellowship amidst government restrictions and global lockdowns.Find a theater near you

When California governor Gavin Newsom locked down the state of California during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was one man and one church that stood up against the governmental overreach and opened its doors to the body of believers, John McArthur's Grace Community. Pastor McArthur joins “Fearless” to discuss the upcoming documentary “The Essential Church” which documents the history of governmental interference in the Christian Church. “We live Godly, quiet, peaceable, submissive lives to the government. But, when the government oversteps its bounds, we have to hold the line. Christ is the head of the Church, not Gavin Newsom”. Jason and Pastor McArthur dive into the role of, and lack of, true masculine leadership in the American church and society. And in Tennessee Harmony, Anthony Walker and Virgil Walker join the show to review Pastor McArthur's interview and share their thoughts on his impact and legacy. Learn more about your ad choices. Why did so many American churches lock down? Why did so many Christian submissively keep their churches closed and the Gospel silent while liquor stores stayed open and BLM rioted in the streets? That critical topic is starting point for this hourlong discussion between Charlie and Dr. John MacArthur, pastor at Grace Community Church and protagonist of the new movie "The Essential Church," about the battle to reopen churches in the face of government threats. Dr. MacArthur also digs into how American Christians have become too effeminate, insufficiently masculine, and too vulnerable to consuming and repeating woke lies of the wider culture.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
