Name a genre, and you can bet that Luis Garban has tried his hand at it once or twice. Once a staple of the mid-'00s IDM and breakcore scene—think Tigerbeat6—as Cardopusher, Garban found a temporary home in the dubstep scene afterwards, before shooting off in what felt like a million directions. He might be the only artist to release on both Hyperdub and Boysnoize Records. He makes music that can sound like the future or the past, sometimes both at once, and the Venezuelan-born, Spain-based producer's name is shorthand for musical adventurism and variety. Last year, things got even wilder with the debut of Safety Trance, a new alias that explores pan-Latin club music, with a focus on collaboration and shorter, structured songs. (Artists he's worked with include Arca, Iceboy Violet and Virgen Maria.) It's some of the best and most creative work of his career, riding a larger Latin techno wave producing some of the best music around these days. If that weren't enough, returning to Cardopusher, Garban has a career-best EP on the way for EVAR Records, pulling together the various strands of the project into a multi-genre, Gen-Z-friendly raveathon. London label Mais Um's ear for extraordinary music from Brazil continues unabated with the exceptional track that opens this week's Independent Music Podcast. The music of Juçara Marçal is relatively new to us, but the first few bars of her astonishing track ‘Crash' sink their hooks into you very quickly. It's a stunning way to get going. Ivy Barkakati is a Barcelona-based dancefloor doyen with music out on Hospital Productions and Modern Obscure Music, and vocals gracing tracks by Cardopusher, Furious Frank / Mind Dance, and Roza Terenzi. She recently teamed up with Venezuelan producer Phran to form IVAN, and on their Delicious Fantasy EP they make soundtrack music for transcendent dancing experiences. Venezuelan-born and based in Barcelona, as the founder behind Classicworks and a singular producer, Cardopusher is as rough and rugged as they come. For over a decade he has been a driving force behind cutting edge, experimental electronic music having evolved through the dubstep era and mutating into the realm of techno and house in recent times. He has released an eclectic array of hardware driven, machine music on the likes of Hyperdub, Boysnoize Records, Super Rhythm Trax, I Love Acid and many more. His sound is diverse and abstract at times, drawing upon deep rooted influences and an eclectic sphere of music from across the spectrum of electronics. Not someone who can be easily placed into a definitive category or box, he blurs the lines between house, acid, slow-mo and beyond. This mix is very much a reflection of that.

Born in Venezuela and long-since based in Barcelona, Cardopusher has established himself as one of the most consistent and versatile heads in the city’s bubbling underground, with a sound that has travelled far-and-wide to labels such as Hyperdub, Boys Noize, Super Rhythm Trax and more recently, Dark Entries. Cardopusher urges things in a similarly frenetic direction for our #PHANTASYMIX series, delivering a substantial hour-long mix that wastes little time in generating dancefloor-friendly heat, ripping through a number of his own productions and similarly body-oriented jams courtesy of Locked Club & RLGN, Kris Baha, Miami Band and Qual. Cousins Joshua Doherty and Richard Bevan have been pushing tough underground electronic sounds since 2000. Making their name in part to a series of parties in an abandoned London Underground train station in the first half of the noughties, they founded Seed Records and more recently Balkan Vinyl and have released a steady stream of quality bangers, with a penchant for acid and old rave sounds. Doherty has been running 303-focused parties under the I Love Acid banner since 2007, and in recent years launched an accompanying label, where the likes of Luke Vibert, Snuff Crew, Cardopusher, Perseus Traxx and Affie Yusuf have all released tracks on a limited number of 303 vinyl copies. Their mix for us encompasses unreleased goodies, productions for the likes of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Hardfloor Records and Craigie Knowes, and plenty of varied licks. *How would you describe your sound?* Sci-fi acid house and hectic electro rave. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Everything from classic house of Chicago and techno of Detroit in the ‘80s, through to European rave and techno in the ‘90s, and the explosion of genres and ideas since then all over the world. We've been quietly watching the career of Djedjotronic from afar for some time, he has evolved as an artist and has emerged from the big room bonanza with a unique and singular sound which has been well supported and praised. Along the way he has collaborated with some of the most influential in dance and electronic music including the likes of Miss. Kittin and Cardopusher. He has released most prominently on Boys Noize Records and is now set to release his debut full length album which showcases his talent in a new light. A few weeks ago we premiered a collaborative reimagination of Gary Numan's track "Are Friends Electric" in collaboration with Lokier... It's a sign of good things to come...

Originating from Hong Kong Mr. Ho has amassed a serious reputation as a selector and label boss through his imprint Klasse Wrecks alongside Luca Lozano. The label has carved a niche for itself through it's visual identity associated with early rave culture and nostalgic days spent dancing. However, the releases themselves have been strong and singular in their sound. Dj Fett Burger, Cardopusher, Helena Hauff, Marco Bernardi, Dj Normal 4 and many others have all released records with the label which was only formed in 2015. Fast paced and assertive Klasse Wrecks is hot property. Mr. Ho is sought after as a disc jockey, his sets tastefully curated and diverse in style. The San Francisco resident wants the real thing: dark warehouses, big soundsystems, sweaty walls and even sweatier bodies, and the pulsing sounds of gritty house and techno. It’s those kinds of sounds that Ghosts on Tape (a.k.a. Ryan Merry) assembles on his dual Yamaha SU700 samplers. Although the ’90s-era machines are undeniably antiquated—new sounds literally have be loaded on the fly via floppy disk—he’s thoroughly mastered these vintage weapons, putting together jaw-dropping live sets that combine the ominous underbelly of classic house and techno with upfront, bass-heavy futurism. Those sonic principles also drive ICEE HOT, the influential monthly party in San Francisco which Ghosts on Tape co-founded and where he continues to serve as a resident DJ.  A native of St. Louis, Ghosts on Tape relocated to San Francisco in 2003 and began garnering attention for his blistering DJ and live sets and the warped, occasionally tropical-flavored bass sounds he was creating. His 2009 Predator Mode EP on Wireblock—which included a white-hot Roska remix of the title track—exploded Ghosts on Tape’s profile even further, as did an exclusive mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 show, and remixes for the likes of Rainbow Arabia, Lemonade, Cardopusher, Chrissy Murderbot, Subeena, Mexicans with Guns, Thunderball, among others. In 2011, he was selected to be a participant in the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid.
