On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to Bo Winegard and Noah Carl, the editors behind the online publication Aporia Magazine, founded in 2022. Winegard and Carl are both former academics. Winegard has a social psychology Ph.D. from Florida State University, and was an assistant professor at Marietta College. He was an editor at Quillette before moving to Aporia. Carl earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Oxford University. He was a research fellow at St. Edmund's College, Cambridge, before becoming a contributor to The Daily Skeptic and UnHerd, and a managing editor at Aporia. First, Razib asks Winegard and Carl about their respective cancellations, and the recent attacks on Aporia from the British media in particular. Winegard observes that many of the criticisms were muddled, as journalists struggled to get basic facts straight about who did what, as well as mixing up present associations among various editors with past ones. The two also address the change in the culture over the last few years, as cancellations seem to have lost some of their bite. Then Razib asks Winegard about the perception that Aporia is fixated on the third-rail of American culture: race and IQ, and its relevance to social policy and politics. Winegard talks about how he has long since said everything he has to say on the topic, but he still finds that the public conversation fails to address the possibility of cognitive differences between populations, and so keeps finding himself wading back in, to fill a gap in the discourse. Razib also asks the editors about their view of “cold winters theory,” which attempts to explain the higher IQs of temperate zone populations versus tropical ones. Then they discuss the disappointments of the MAGA movement, and its appeal to populist emotion. Winegard had hoped that despite its inchoate nature, it might have been able to pare back the radical excesses of the progressive cultural changes of the 2010's, but now he worries that overreach may up the chances that woke policies make a comeback with the inevitable political backlash in the next few years. Winegard also addresses his personal souring on reflexive anti-wokism, and Carl shares his own views from across the Atlantic, where Britain appears to follow in the US' footsteps, even if from an entirely different social-historical context. Winegard discusses the difficulties of maintaining a consistent heterodoxy in the face of tribalistic demands for conformity. Finally, they discuss the path forward for publications like Aporia that do not toe any particular party line.

Richard Lynn was a scientist who infamously tried to estimate the average IQ of every country. Typical of his results is this paper, which ranged from 60 (Malawi) to 108 (Singapore). Lynn's national IQ estimates (source) People obviously objected to this, and Lynn spent his life embroiled in controversy, with activists constantly trying to get him canceled/fired and his papers retracted/condemned. His opponents pointed out both his personal racist opinions/activities and his somewhat opportunistic methodology. Nobody does high-quality IQ tests on the entire population of Malawi; to get his numbers, Lynn would often find some IQ-ish test given to some unrepresentative sample of some group related to Malawians and try his best to extrapolate from there. How well this worked remains hotly debated; the latest volley is Aporia's Are Richard Lynn's National IQ Estimates Flawed? (they say no). I've followed the technical/methodological debate for a while, but I think the strongest emotions here come from two deeper worries people have about the data: https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/how-to-stop-worrying-and-learn-to

Today in AI is a daily recap of the latest news and developments in the AI industry. See your story and want to be featured in an upcoming episode? Reach out at tonyphoang.com The Biden administration's Section 301 investigation into the import of Chinese legacy semiconductors highlights the U.S.'s dependence on these critical components and the associated economic and security risks. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on Chinese technology and address concerns over China's trade practices, which could lead to further supply chain disruptions and increased geopolitical tensions. Jenna Lawson's use of AI and audio monitors to track endangered spider monkeys in Costa Rica has revolutionized wildlife conservation. This method, along with Microsoft's new Sparrow devices, demonstrates the significant potential of AI in monitoring and protecting biodiversity worldwide, despite the technical challenges and ethical considerations that come with it. Meta Platforms Inc. is heavily investing in artificial intelligence to improve its digital advertising capabilities and introduce new AI-driven features across its platforms. These investments are expected to significantly enhance the company's revenue and market position, although they come with high costs and competitive challenges. OpenAI's latest o3 model represents a major advancement in AI performance, achieving high benchmark scores and introducing test-time scaling, which boosts model capabilities by using more computational power during inference. However, the high costs and energy demands of this approach raise concerns about the sustainability and accessibility of advanced AI technologies, leading the industry to seek more efficient solutions and innovative hardware. Coralogix's acquisition of Aporia aims to enhance its AI system monitoring and security capabilities, addressing a crucial gap in its offerings. This strategic move is designed to provide Coralogix customers with advanced tools for AI model observability, real-time anomaly detection, and improved model explainability, positioning the company as a strong competitor in the AI and machine learning market. Generative AI is reshaping the art world by creating, curating, and valuing art in new ways, as seen with Botto, an AI artist whose works have sold for over $5 million through community-driven auctions. This transformation raises questions about authorship, creativity, and the role of technology, while also democratizing access to the art market and challenging traditional artistic norms.

Muslim scriptural text seems to pose contemporary challenges as to how its reader may mitigate tension between what text says and what it means. This tension defines the hermeneutical problem represented in the potential opposition between language and meaning, such opposition which Muslim jurists, and Arabic philologists for that matter, sought to resolve by referring to the idea of ‘context'. Particularly in juristic literature, Muslim scholars tend to use the word ‘context' in two meanings: 1) ‘context' in the sense of the linguistic context of the scriptural text; that is to read a text semantically and thematically according to its language-use and in connection with the surrounding texts which come before and after (aka sawābiq and lawāḥiq), where syntactical structure and speech arrangement are detrimental in the meaning-making process, and 2) ‘context' as referring to the specifics of a given situation, where a text is read in connection with its speaker's (authorial) intent and its surrounding historical and cultural circumstances. Based on these two meanings, ‘context' can be classified into two types: context of language and context of situation, to borrow Malinowski's term for the latter type. This paper seeks to demonstrate that the Muslim jurists relegated ‘context of situatio' to an ancillary but instrumental role in determining meaning, as they do not seem to envisage the possibility of meaning beyond text or outside the context of language-use. It is possible however, I argue, to redeem a space within classical Islamic tradition, where ‘context of situation' can be said to play an equally active role in the meaning-making process, hence balancing/reconciling the notion of language with the notion of meaning. Toward that end, the current paper seeks to expand the idea of ‘context' to include another type of ‘context', i.e., the context of interpreting religious text in connection with concrete reality. That is, a text – to be intelligible – is to be understood in connection with the way the text applies to a concrete situation. With this, the paper shall refer to three types of ‘context': context of language, context of situation, and context of application. The paper shall draw on perspectives not only from classical Islamic knowledge but also from the philosophy of language and philosophical hermeneutics that may inform discussions on the attempt to develop such hermeneutics of application from within Islamic tradition. As it proceeds to situate its argument within Islamic tradition and modern knowledge, this paper will make references to 1) classical Islamic scholars such as al-Shāṭibī, Ibn al-Qayyim, and other philologists and jurists from Islamic tradition and 2) modern scholars of language and hermeneutics such as Firth, Wittgenstein, Malinowski, and Gadamer from modern times.

Listen to the full interview at AporiaMagazine.com Are the labels of "alpha" and "beta" males in the manosphere a reflection of reality or a gross oversimplification? Alex joins us on Aporia to dissect the dual mate hypothesis, also known as strategic pluralism, and its implications for understanding human mating strategies. Far from the clear-cut narratives often spun in certain corners of the internet, Alex explains that the concept has been distorted beyond its scientific origins, leading to some pervasive myths about women's mating behaviors. We invite you to listen in as we unravel the threads of evolutionary psychology, challenging the notion that women universally adopt short-term mating strategies at the drop of a hat.

On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Aporia Magazine's Diana Fleischman, an evolutionary psychologist who earned her Ph.D. in David Buss' lab at the University of Texas in Austin. Fleischman discusses the origins of her field, its methodological framework and presuppositions, and why evolutionary psychologists seem obsessed with sex. Razib also brings up the relationship of evolutionary psychology to primatology and the role that behavioral studies of common chimpanzees and bonobos play in understanding what Jared Diamond termed the “third chimpanzee,” humans. They then circle back to the importance of the reality of heritable “hard-wired” behaviors in evolutionary psychology, and its relationship to behavior genetics. Fleischman and Razib then move on to eugenics and the controversy that ensued after Fleischman's piece You're probably a eugenicist. They wonder how narrowly to constrain the term; for example, is the ubiquitous termination of fetuses with Down Syndrome eugenic if those individuals brought to term cannot themselves reproduce? Is selection for intelligence and height in your marriage partner eugenical? Razib and Fleischman also talk about the eugenical impact of abortion, including the decline of crime, and why the Left does not talk extensively about this topic. Fleischman discusses eugenics' future with the rise of reproductive technology and a more detailed understanding of complex trait architecture. The possibility of embryo selection's rise brings up concrete concerns and resurrects the specter of bottom-up eugenics, despite the abolishment and banning of top-down eugenics. Fleischman and her co-authors tackle embryo selection for complex traits in a recent piece in Aporia.

This week we start by reviewing Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, and Pierre Leduc's animated movie, THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE (1:55), which adapts the popular videogame franchise for the big screen with an all-star cast. Now streaming on Peacock, this one has us pretty divided. Next, we discuss Jared Moshe's sci-fi film APORIA (22:09), which follows Sophie (Judy Greer), a wife and mother grieving the loss of her husband (Edi Gathegi). Sophie learns about a time-bending machine created by a physicist friend (Payman Maadi) that could restore her former life but using it involves an impossible choice with unforeseen consequences. This is another film that has us divided. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, in honor of the late Paul Reubens, we talk about a non-Pee-wee Herman movie with him, Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 action comedy BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry.

With his time-travel drama Aporia opening in theaters across North America this Friday, writer-director Jared Moshé is here to salute Peter Cattaneo's The Full Monty – the 1997 international smash that made Trainspottting's Robert Carlyle sexy instead of scary. Your genial host Norm Wilner always knew the guy had it in him.

On episode 171, we welcome James Hibbard to discuss the philosophy of cycling and using it for self-creation; the business of cycling and why the sport no longer produces individual riders; whether American capitalism can be escaped by specific individuals; Nietzsche and the existential, human ideal; America's obsession with winning and winners, and whether anyone is really happy; James' cycling career and his realization that being an athlete was no longer sustainable; coping with existential depression, and how Styron's Darkness Visible perfectly described his experience; the perils of idealism and how it precludes us from forming genuine relationships; mindfulness and how to focus on the present; the moral of The Great Gatsby; and the inherent limitations of philosophical inquiry. James Hibbard's writing has appeared in journals including Ploughshares, Aporia, Otherwise, Noetic, and Aethlon. He studied philosophy at the University of California at Santa Cruz and Depaul University, and has received grants and been selected for residencies by PEN America and Tin House. A former UCI professional road cyclist and member of the U.S Cycling Team, James has written extensively on the sport of cycling. His new book, available on May 2, 2023, is called The Art of Cycling: Philosophy, Meaning, and a Life on Two Wheels. | James Hibbard | ► Website | https://www.jameshamiltonhibbard.com ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/jameshamiltonhibbard ► Twitter l https://twitter.com/jameshhibbard ► The Art of Cycling Book | https://amzn.to/3LmrE6W Where you can find us: | Seize The Moment Podcast | ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/SeizeTheMoment ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/seize_podcast ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/seizethemoment ► TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@seizethemomentpodcast ► Patreon | https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32208666
