In this episode of The Crossman Conversation, we're joined by Kwasi Crawford, Senior Commercial Real Estate Advisor at Lloyd Commercial Advisors and Director of Sponsorship for Young Fathers of Central Florida. Kwasi shares how his nonprofit is creating life-changing opportunities for young dads—many of whom have been incarcerated or overlooked by traditional support systems. From securing grants for child support assistance to building resumes and prepping for interviews, Kwasi is on a mission to empower fathers with the tools they need to thrive. He also previews an upcoming Father's Day event week in June and discusses why mentorship and visibility are critical for these men. As Kwasi puts it, “Young fathers are forgotten”—but they don't have to be.

On this special episode, translator Will Vanderhyden joins Brian, Chad, and Kaija to talk about translating Fresán, about the style and word play found in his books, about the footnotes, about what's to come. They also talk about the line connecting this to Confidence-Man, and how to read footnotes. And about the interplay between two narratorial voices in this first part. Also mentioned are this interview with Fresán on Between the Covers, this one with Will Vanderhyden on Beyond the Zero, and this new Fresán story ("Music to Destroy Worlds" (An Exoeriment)") in Southwest Review. And here's where you can get your own "Grifters Gonna Grift" t-shirt mentioned in this episode. Next episode will cover pages 62-123 of Rodrigo Fresán's Melvill. As mentioned from the top, we had severe technical difficulties, so the sound quality on this is janky. (Mostly Chad's voice is quiet, which, for many, is likely to be a relief.) Nevertheless Chad and Kaija power on, talking about "The Institute" as a metaphor, the allusions to Duncan Thaw, dragons, dragon scales as metaphor, the prologue and stories within stories, and then the opening "quest" of "Book One." We're beyond thrilled to welcome French house music pioneers Alan Braxe & DJ Falcon who share with us with their recent set from Golden Plains Festival! Fasten your seatbelts for a high-octane genre bending encounter, packed with plenty of cult French house classics mixed with the duo's signature blend of indie pop, disco and techno with some special edits they made just for the set. @braxe1 + @djfalconofficial Q. What inspiration did you both draw upon when planning for this set at Golden Plains? How would you describe the feeling in the crowd, and what kind of a story were you hoping to tell with the music that night? Alan Braxe: Weeks before playing at Golden Plains many people and friends told us this one is going to be special, you'll love it! So we were very excited. When we arrived on the site we immediately felt very good energy with a big crowd focusing on the music. All these lights everywhere made it quite unreal, a bit like in a fairy tale. When we played we tried to be quite eclectic covering a wide range of the music we like. We even prepared some special edits backstage before the set when we realized how good the atmosphere was. DJ Falcon: As Alain said we were already excited to play there as we had tonnes of great feedback from our Australian mates weeks before the show. We knew this festival was going to suit us well as we're constantly flirting with pop, rock and electronic music. Honestly we simply play the music we love and tell a little bit of our story, some of our French classics combined with a selection of tracks we like from the moment. Q. What were some of your favourite moments from this particular set, and how do you guys find the right balance between the nostalgic classics and the newer French house sounds when preparing for your sets together? AB: As said above we love to play eclectic with a bit of techno, house, French house, indie pop, we don't really prepare the set, it's more an improvisation based on our respective selections. It doesn't really matter to us if the music is new or made 20 years ago, it's more about playing tracks we love 100%. My fave moment was probably when I played the 1st track “I Saw” by Young Fathers that I edited a few minutes before the set. On stage, when I saw this very enthusiastic crowd, I felt like wow we have full freedom to play whatever we want. DJF: Favorite moment, for me, is when you arrive at the place and you instantly know that you're gonna have a good time. Also after 10/15 mins of our set we were able to know that the audience is super receptive, that's a good satisfaction for us. Talking about the right balance between classics and newer tracks is mainly dictated by the energy of the audience. I feel like we're simply going with the flow, we're somehow just some kind of energy sensor… Q. Now having completed this long awaited Australia tour, how did you find the experience of returning to the country after so many years, this time as a duo, and where are you hoping to take the Braxe + Falcon project next? AB: It's been a very pleasant tour, we did other festivals with also a very positive reaction from the people, touring as a duo is also very exciting as there is this common excitement backstage before playing, and also my son is now living in Sydney so I had the chance to spend a lot of time with him. Next for us is studio time to release more music, our next single is set to be released on July 10th on Smugglers Way / Domino, and there will be more to come later in 2024.
Back in November 2023, Host Alisha Sweeney joined Scottish trio Young Fathers in their dressing room before they opened for Depeche Mode at Ball Arena on their massive US tour. The band's 2023 album, their fourth, Heavy Heavy was nominated for the Mercury Prize in music---a prestigious UK title that they first were nominated for AND WON in 2014! They also just made history in their home country by winning their third Scottish Album of the Year award being praised for its raw energy and emotional depth! Members Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G. Hastings talked with Alisha for our show Live Cuts about recording their new record during lockdown, their bond which started when they were teenagers, and they also share some of their favorite live moments from performing at festivals last summer.
Welcome back to Trve. Cvlt. Pop!, on this weeks episode we look at movie scores. It was the Oscars a few week back, with Oppenheimer winning the coveted best score award at the ceremony, and so we have decided to dedicate this episode to looking at what makes a great score, rather than soundtrack, in the movie world. We chat about everything from 60's free jazz improv, groundbreaking early synth, the rise of immersive D&B and electro scores and more, including chat about everyone from Daft Punk to John Williams, Tangerine Dream to Danny Elfman and... er... the Police Academy score. There's also live reports from recent shows in London by The Chemical Brothers and Young Fathers, plus we look at a lost classic from "troubled" UK reggae sensation Finlay Quaye. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It's been an amazing Season 4 here at Hidden Track. We've had visits with an astounding array of inspired artists, ranging from local heroes to global greats; from a reigning Polaris Prize winner to a newly minted Grammy Award winner; from hip-hop to hardcore punk to homespun folk. It's been such a wild 2023! So wild, in fact, that we felt the need to do a special episode to wrap up the season. Given the daunting task of summarizing such an incredible season, Grant decided to call in a little help! For this year-end episode, Grant Stovel is joined by Hidden Track producer Scott Zielsdorf to help share some great stories and songs from amongst this season's 21 episodes. In particular, this collection of magical moments zeroes in on the idea of connecting to something larger through music -- whether that's connecting with family and friends, with community, with humanity at large, connecting with your own inner sense of humanity, even connecting with your true artistic self. That yearning to connect is often the catalyst that compels musicians to create, to express, to be part of something. Music can be a vector for connection in amazing ways -- as we hear in this episode! With memorable stories and songs from the likes of William Prince, Tanika Charles, Arlo Maverick, Wendy McNeill, Dan Mangan, F*cked Up, Young Fathers, Aysanabee, Andy Shauf, Kid Koala & Leilani, Alex Cuba, and July Talk. Thank you for being with us in 2023! And we thank all of our guests for being so generous with their time and their hearts. All the best for 2024, and we can't wait to share Hidden Track Season 5 with you! Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Music: Doug Hoyer | Graphics: Shaun Friesen The Hidden Track Podcast is made possible by the generous contributions of our donors. Thank you for your support!
Made in a basement studio littered with instruments and synth gear, Young Fathers' new album Heavy Heavy was created entirely by the three members of the band - with the exception of a single guest vocal from a friend. The album features layer upon layer of voices and instruments, creating a sonic maelstrom of dynamics, moods and textures. And while the songs do vary widely, and occasionally tackle dark subjects, the overwhelming feeling is one of joy, connection, celebration, and togetherness. Alloysius Maasaqoui, Kayus Bankole, and Graham Hastings have been together a long time. Hailing from the magical musical city of Edinburgh, Scotland, Young Fathers are a group of friends who met up as teenagers, and who have spun their undefinable blend of post-punk, soul, noise pop, hip-hop, and lo-fi electronica into a unique, compelling, Mercury Prize-winning body of work. The latest album finds the group embracing a diverse swath of influences and inspirations. Two of the members of the group, Allosius and Kayus, spent parts of their early years in Africa; this album integrates some of that influence in exciting new ways. The band is also inspired by a wide range of global music, from Jamaican reggae to gospel from the American South. Musical collaborators for more than two decades now, 2023 marked the 15th anniversary of the trio's debut single, plus the release of the band's widely lauded new album. This year also sees the band touring internationally on a bill with one of the most foundational, influential bands in electro pop history, Depeche Mode. The bill brought Young Fathers to Alberta in late 2023, where they took some time to drop by CKUA's music library for a conversation about their stellar new album, their creative journey as perennial pop music renegades and the weight they bring to Heavy Heavy. The Hidden Track podcast is produced by CKUA Radio and made possible by the generosity of CKUA's incredible donors. Thank you for your support! It's Trve. Cvlt. Pop! time again baby! Steve and Sam are back to talk about the week in music. This means there are reviews on new music from In Flames, Young Fathers, Lil Yaughty and Narrow Head, all the gossip from this weeks Grammy ceremony, which means we go "ooh nice!" at wins for Kendrick Lamar and Brandi Carlile and the big 50th anniversary celebration of hip-hop, and "Oh ffs!" at their treatment of metal and ignoring Turnstile, a Healy watch where we fear for the safety of our little Matty as he picks a beef with the Gallagher Brothers and Steve reports back from seeing UK rap superstar in the making Kojey Radical from the tiny confines of a bar in East London. Think that's it...? OH, no, wait, we also talk about series three of the 1987 ITV impression sketch comedy show Copycats again. Admit it, that's why you're really here. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Ein intensiver New Music Friday: Sounds! hört hin.
Joe finally took five minutes to put the podcast on Spotify. We listen to: Mabe Fratti, Karate, Young Fathers, and the latest circus music from The Smashing Pumpkins. There's a long, meandering discussion about Fermi's Paradox but for music? RIP Jeremiah Green. We promise to listen to new music in 2023.

Young Fathers - “Geronimo,” a 2022 single on Ninja Tune. Scottish genre-benders, Mercury Prize-winners, and KEXP favorites Young Fathers released their third record Cocoa Sugar in what feels like a lifetime ago, 2018. At long last, they finally returned with the single “Geronimo.” In a world where we're still stretching our legs and feeling out how to get back into the swing of “real life,” the trio - made up of Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and ‘G' Hastings - are doing the same. In their most soulful, downtempo song to date, Young Fathers are both sonically and literally dipping their toes back into the waters of music. While in the past, they'd often caustically throw themselves at you, pushing the doors down with the heels of their feet, the trio is gentle in their approach, as if to tap on the door and ask, “Do you mind if I enter?” Of course we don't mind. But, personally, I'm not opposed to a gentle approach these days. This is what the band had to say about the song: “A good time trying. That's what Ma said, she was smiling, but it was meant as a warning. It's a track about contrast, because life is contrast - pushing through, giving up, all at the same time. Wanting everything and then wanting nothing, then wanting everything again. It's kind of reflective of where we are at the moment, trying to remember how to do this again. Trying to make music and all of the other stuff that comes along with it. Trying to forget all the bad bits, just trying to get somewhere. And that's where we are right now, trying to get somewhere. It's the tenderness in toil, we had expelled a bunch of stuff with a lot of drive and wilder energy beforehand but this one had focus. It widened the scope again for us personally, that's where the real high comes from. We grew another arm. We surprised ourselves. So coming back with a track called ‘Geronimo' feels quite fitting. Just the 3 of us again, but still in a fucking basement.” Read the full post and watch their 2018 KEXP in-studio at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After four years, “Geronimo” is the first track we hear from Young Fathers, who cut loose in the studio for one of their most unabashed, soulful tracks to date with “Geronimo.”
