My good pals Max Bale and Gaël Flaugère, who run the Planète Radio department that sponsors ePOP, invited me to come on the show and talk to you, in English. So plan to stay up late or get up early on 12 December, beloved listeners! And we are so pleased that "one of our own" has made it into the running: Saleem Akhtar Chadhar, the president of the RFI Seven Stars Listeners Club, is one of the 10 nominees in the RFI Clubs category! As Lidwien van Dixhoorn, the head of “Le Français facile” service told me: “Bathe your ears in the sound of the language, and eventually, you'll get it.” She should know – Lidwien is Dutch and came to France hardly able to say “bonjour” and now she heads this key RFI department – so stick with it!Be sure you check out our wonderful podcasts! In addition to the news articles on our site, with in-depth analysis of current affairs in France and across the globe, we have several podcasts that will leave you hungry for more. There's Spotlight on France, Spotlight on Africa, The International Report, and of course, The Sound Kitchen. Gerald Muller, my beloved music teacher from St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, has been writing books for young adults in his retirement – and they are free! There is a volume of biographies of painters and musicians called Gentle Giants, and an excellent biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., too. They are also a good way to help you improve your English - that's how I worked on my French, reading books that were meant for young readers – and I guarantee you, it's a good method for improving your language skills. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! We have a new RFI Listeners Club member to welcome: Jahangir Alam from Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Jahangir is also the president of the World DX International Radio Fan Club in his fair city. Welcome, Jahangir! This week's quiz: On 26 October, I asked you a question about The COP16 Biodiversity Summit, which opened on 21 October and ran through the first of this month, November. Held in Cali, Columbia, it was attended by leaders and delegates from over 200 countries.RFI English journalist Amanda Morrow wrote about what was at stake at this COP, in her article “Ecosystems hang in the balance as Colombia hosts crucial biodiversity talks”.Not much has happened since COP15 – as Amanda noted, as of this date, only 17 percent of land and about 8 percent of oceans are protected – a far cry from the 30 percent committed to at COP15.Money pledged is also far behind schedule: and that was your question. You were to re-read Amanda's article and send in the answer to this question: How much money was promised by wealthy nations to support biodiversity protection in developing countries, and how much has actually been secured? The answer is, to quote Amanda: “Talks at Cop16 will focus on pressuring wealthy nations to deliver the promised US 30 billion annually to support biodiversity protection in developing countries. So far, pledges to a new biodiversity fund have fallen far short, with only about 400 million secured – and even less disbursed. Countries like China may also be called on to play a larger financial role.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “Imagine that France's president Emmanuel Macron came to visit your city. Which three places would you take him?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI English listener Malik Shoaib Ahmad Khokhar from Muzaffargarh, Pakistan. Malik is also this week's bonus question winner. Congratulations, Malik! Also on the list of lucky winners this week are our brand-new RFI Listeners Club member Jahangir Alam from Rajshahi, Bangladesh, as well as RFI English listeners Kripa Ram Kaga from Sirajganj, Bangladesh; Bari from the Friends Radio Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh, and last but assuredly not least, our brother journalist Suresh Agrawal, from Odisha, India. Here's the music you heard on this week's programme: “Les Pommes de Grand-Mère” from Le Grand Cahier by Alexander Litvinovsky, performed by the Metamorphose String Orchestra conducted by Pavel Lyubomudrov; “Zingaro” by Rene Aubrey; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Intro” by Alan Braxe and Fred Falke.Do you have a music request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.frThis week's question ... you must listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, re-read our article “Senegal's ruling Pastef party on track to get large majority in elections”, which will help you with the answer. You have until 6 January to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 11 January 2025 podcast.

Exploring a subset of electronic music made in France from the years 1996 to 2004.It's the latest episode in the Niall explains a dance music genre to Andrea series. What is French Touch? For some it means house music of French origin of the '90s and 2000s. For me, it's more defined.French Touch is more of a subgenre almost exclusively made by French producers - French dance music rooted in samples of old disco records where strings, bass and vocals were rerouted through a Chicago house music 4/4 beat and given a retro futuristic sheen with shiny synthesisers and a compressed cosmic atmosphere. A sense of majique can we say?It was part of a near 10 year period from the mid 90s to the early-2000s in which French dance music dominated, a time in which Parisian cool, French fashion and influence dripped out of the country's culture, whether it was Daft Punk's world domination, Ed Banger Records' electro cachet on dancefloors worldwide, fashion and record label Kitsune's coveted Maison compilations or Phillipe Zdar's influence on music production. For our short history of French Touch, we will feature music from Alan Braxe, DJ Falcon, Thomas Bangalter, Stardust, Cassius, Together, The Paradise Étienne De Crecy and the omnipresent Daft Punk.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon to hear all full episodes, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community.Show notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistFrench Touch companion playlistListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed Hosted on Acast. We're beyond thrilled to welcome French house music pioneers Alan Braxe & DJ Falcon who share with us with their recent set from Golden Plains Festival! Fasten your seatbelts for a high-octane genre bending encounter, packed with plenty of cult French house classics mixed with the duo's signature blend of indie pop, disco and techno with some special edits they made just for the set. @braxe1 + @djfalconofficial Q. What inspiration did you both draw upon when planning for this set at Golden Plains? How would you describe the feeling in the crowd, and what kind of a story were you hoping to tell with the music that night? Alan Braxe: Weeks before playing at Golden Plains many people and friends told us this one is going to be special, you'll love it! So we were very excited. When we arrived on the site we immediately felt very good energy with a big crowd focusing on the music. All these lights everywhere made it quite unreal, a bit like in a fairy tale. When we played we tried to be quite eclectic covering a wide range of the music we like. We even prepared some special edits backstage before the set when we realized how good the atmosphere was. DJ Falcon: As Alain said we were already excited to play there as we had tonnes of great feedback from our Australian mates weeks before the show. We knew this festival was going to suit us well as we're constantly flirting with pop, rock and electronic music. Honestly we simply play the music we love and tell a little bit of our story, some of our French classics combined with a selection of tracks we like from the moment. Q. What were some of your favourite moments from this particular set, and how do you guys find the right balance between the nostalgic classics and the newer French house sounds when preparing for your sets together? AB: As said above we love to play eclectic with a bit of techno, house, French house, indie pop, we don't really prepare the set, it's more an improvisation based on our respective selections. It doesn't really matter to us if the music is new or made 20 years ago, it's more about playing tracks we love 100%. My fave moment was probably when I played the 1st track “I Saw” by Young Fathers that I edited a few minutes before the set. On stage, when I saw this very enthusiastic crowd, I felt like wow we have full freedom to play whatever we want. DJF: Favorite moment, for me, is when you arrive at the place and you instantly know that you're gonna have a good time. Also after 10/15 mins of our set we were able to know that the audience is super receptive, that's a good satisfaction for us. Talking about the right balance between classics and newer tracks is mainly dictated by the energy of the audience. I feel like we're simply going with the flow, we're somehow just some kind of energy sensor… Q. Now having completed this long awaited Australia tour, how did you find the experience of returning to the country after so many years, this time as a duo, and where are you hoping to take the Braxe + Falcon project next? AB: It's been a very pleasant tour, we did other festivals with also a very positive reaction from the people, touring as a duo is also very exciting as there is this common excitement backstage before playing, and also my son is now living in Sydney so I had the chance to spend a lot of time with him. Next for us is studio time to release more music, our next single is set to be released on July 10th on Smugglers Way / Domino, and there will be more to come later in 2024.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we have a pair of French electronic music pioneers who recently teamed up alongside a DJ who's been responsible for some of the most exciting production of the past 20+ years: Braxe and Falcon with A-Trak. Alan Braxe and his cousin Stephane Quem—aka DJ Falcon—are legends of French house music going back decades: Braxe was one-third of the trio Stardust alongside Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter. They famously released just one song in 1998 before splitting up, but “Music Sounds Better With You” is a classic of the genre. Falcon's biggest claim to fame might also be Daft Punk adjacent: He co-wrote and co-produced their song “Contact,” from 2013's Random Access Memories. And though they've obviously been acquainted forever, Braxe and Falcon only recently came together for a project, and it's pretty amazing. Their debut EP, Step By Step, includes a killer title track with an appearance by Panda Bear. Braxe and Falcon will make their live debut in November with two U.S. shows, one in New York and another in L.A. Check out “Step by Step” right here. That EP also features a remix by Braxe and Falcon's old friend DJ A-Trak, a superstar of the electronic world whose resume makes me feel very lazy. As a young guy, he was a championship-level turntablist in his native Canada, which led to a years-long role on stage with Kanye West. His career continued as a headlining DJ and producer in his own right: He's known both for creating his own sounds and remixing big names. He also runs the vaunted Fool's Gold label and collaborates with lots of other folks, including Armand Van Helden in Duck Sauce. A-Track's latest project is a collaborative album with elusive hip-hop icon Cam'ron called U Wasn't There, which comes out September 23. Check out “All I Really Wanted” from that upcoming record. In this chat, Braxe, Falcon, and A-Trak talk about the sonic intersections of house music and old-school hip-hop, they discuss the ups and downs of the forced Covid break, and there's a lot of gear talk—which is a whole different thing when you're talking about samplers and keyboards instead of guitars and pedals. It's a lot of fun, and I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Braxe, Falcon, and A-Trak for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out Talkhouse.com for all kinds of great written features. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon are pioneers of French house music, releasing on Thomas Bangalter's Roulé label. In 1998, Braxe released ‘Music Sounds Better With You' as one-third of Stardust, while DJ Falcon broke out with tracks like ‘Together'. Now the producers (also cousins) are teaming up to release new music as duo Braxe + Falcon. In this episode, learn about Braxe's penchant for affordable speakers, the lesser-known converters they use for all mixes, why they love modular and which esoteric French polysynth makes the cut.Season 4 is sponsored by EVO by Audient: https://evo.audio/STUFF WE TALK ABOUT (SPOILERS!)https://www.instagram.com/motorbass/?hl=enhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3Al_QCDVk8&ab_channel=HouseMusicDealer%28HMD%29 (DJ Falcon - My Name Is)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3PvUHjoUJA&ab_channel=BlizzardOfTheCoast (DJ Falcon - Honeymoon)https://gearspace.com/board/high-end/989713-ua-2192-2015-a.htmlhttps://www.burlaudio.com/products/b2-bomber-adchttps://motu.com/en-us/products/software/dp/features/https://buchla.com/lem-208/https://buchla.com/music-easel/https://mos-lab.com/https://www.strymon.net/product/magneto/https://reverb.com/item/10079358-tapco-th-15a-15-powered-loudspeakers-pairhttps://musictech.com/news/gear/namm-2022-auratone-unveil-new-5c-active-super-sound-cube/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairlight_CMIhttps://baloran.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=59https://www.vintagesynth.com/moog/sourc.php
This week's show covers new music from a duet between the French producers Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon, and LA R&B artist Sunni Colón. Next, some noisy dreampop from Ireland's Just Mustard. We also feature a new track from London's KH, which is Four Tet's name when releasing dance bangers, and some spooky jazz from Britain's The Natural Yogurt Band. For the archive track this week, Brendan honored Andy Fletcher, the recently departed member of Depeche Mode, with perhaps that band's signature song, from 1984's Some Great Reward: “People Are People.” Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. (Great music in there, ladies and gentlemen.) It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!
