The Monologues Podcast invites producers to mix an hour of their own productions. Coming soon: M75 - Keita Sano. Follow our record label on Bandcamp. Rotterdam's Danou P has been one of our favourite producers this year, releasing a slew of standout tracks both solo and alongside his studio partner, Chicago star Jamie 3:26. With a knack for exquisite melody and infectious grooves, his music is imbued with warmth and a discernible human touch. If he keeps going like this he'll go far. This mix features some exclusive unreleased bizness, various jazzy workouts and his piano house stomper ‘The Good Old Days (Are Now)'—one of our favourites of 2023. *How would you describe your sound?* I was trained as a keyboardist and later started producing. Therefore I tend to play and record a lot myself instead of relying on samples. I love ‘90s Deep House and I'm a sucker for those old school sounds. I think you can describe my sound best as Deep House influenced by the golden era of the genre, but made by a musician/keyboardist with a modern touch. Having said that I love to go down different roads like more Disco, Italo and electro sounding stuff. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I've always been inspired by old Funk, Boogie and Disco. There is something about the soul in it and the synthesizer sounds that will always resonate with me. As far as House goes I really like Kerri and ‘90s Deep House artists alike. Newer artists that I really admire and draw inspiration from are: Makez, Clive From Accounts, Felipe Gordon, Chaos In The CBD, COEO, I can keep going hahaha. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* I had great fun doing this mix. I don't usually play that many of my own tracks in a set and to my surprise it was actually really easy to get to 60 minutes. It was really cool to find out that some tracks fit really well together. This is something I'm definitely going to remember and use when I'm playing in the future! I tried to show very different sides of me as an artist in this mix. I played a couple of tracks from me and Jamie 3:26 including new remixes we've done, some older tracks that will be released in the near future and some original tracks that are out already. I also played an edit of ‘Street Player/ that I made recently. I just made that one for myself as a straight up edit and tool on the dancefloorl. I think a lot of people don't get to that part of the song when they play it and they tend to play the most well known parts as somewhat of a crowdpleaser. But this last part is where it's at for me! It's a great groove and it just keeps building and going. Tracklist: 1. Danou P & Kems Kriol - Jazz Dummy (3:26 Records) 2. Danou P - So Fruit (3:26 Records) 3. Jamie 3:26 & Danou P - Roy Layers (Shake Records) 4. Radio Slave - Wild Life (Jamie 3:26 & Danou P 'Discotek' Remix) (Rekids) 5. Danou P - Serenity Now (Unreleased) 6. Danou P - Tutti To The Frutti (Unreleased) 7. Danou P - The Good Old Days (Are Now) (GLXY Recs.) 8. Danou P - What We Talking' Bout (Unreleased) 9. Danou P - I Rumble U Crumble (Unreleased) 10. Chicago - Street Player (Danou P What's The Groove Edit) 11. Steven Bamidele - Throw It All Away (Jamie 3:26 & Danou P Remix) (To be released on Tru Thoughts)

With an always colourful, melodic yet punchy sound that spans Eurodance vibes, splashes of techno and disco and melodic house, he's very much one to keep an eye on, and this mix of his own mostly unreleased productions is an absolute treat. *How would you describe your sound?* My sound has kind of evolved over the past couple of years, a byproduct of covid lockdowns I guess but fundamentally its the tougher side of house music with some elements of disco. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I think in terms of eras its the '80s and early '90s. I take a lot of inspiration from House, disco and Italo disco particular the synths, drums and some times even the vocals. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* This mix is predominantly made up of unreleased demos, I've had a lot of time in the studio recently sincing moving and its given me interesting results which im really happy with but also slightly nervous to share, but fuck it. Hope you enjoy x Tracklist: Alex Virgo & Jack Priest - Here We Go Again (True Romance) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - Chasing Shadows (Forthcoming) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - On Air (True Romance) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - Mind Expansion (Unreleased) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - Saturday Ride (Unreleased) Alex Virgo - Vitamins (Unreleased) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - Hazard Lights (Unreleased) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - All Dogs Go To Heaven (Forthcoming) Alex Virgo - Champagne Problems (Unreleased) Alex Virgo - Event Horizon (Unreleased) Alex Virgo & Benjamin Groove - Terraforma (Forthcoming)

Parisian producer @tour-maubourg has released an remarkable body of work in the past couple of years that connects the dots between his city's deep house and nu jazz heritage (e.g. St-Germain, Wuz, Cassius) and the contemporary jazz scene, where sumptuous 4/4 grooves and broken beats are laced with sweet vintage and analog synth solos and motifs. We predict the biggest things for him and are very happy to have him contribute to our long-running series. *How would you describe your sound?* I'm trying to produce modern music, mainly house, jazz, and dub related with an old school and warm feel. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* If I had to name three main influences it would be Ron Trent and Chez Damier, for their vision and reflection on pushing forward the sound. Basic channel for their exploration of texture and ambience. Their sound has a unique feel. Nicolas Jaar for his abilities to touch the masses with non pop music. His ability to make complexity simpler so that anyone can understand his music. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* I was very happy that it was only made out of my production. As I have tons of music I stick that will probably not be released, it's a good way to take it out of my hard drive and give it a second life

One of Berlin's hottest properties Floyd Lavine takes the helm, mixing nothing but his own productions covering all corners of his refreshingly original deep, tribal, soulful, Afro palette. *How would you describe your sound?* I would describe my sound as an interpretation of African electronics - my approach is to capture what I call an Afrofuturist vision pushing the boundaries with an aim to expand the pallet of African electronic . *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I'm an always on the lookout for new and inspiring ideas whether it's music or just a great conversation. Life is inspiring enough on its own. My family, my friends and my fellow artists inspire me . Where I grew up and where I live currently brings a source of inspiration. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* What I wanted to capture with this mix is a mood and journey that explores all parts of who I am as an artist and DJ. My sound is evolving but yet quite a unique take on electronic music. I have added original music from 8 years ago to modern stuff that I've done recently including from remixes to edits. I think the audience will have a sense of my style as producer and my vision as an Afro futurist. His consistently excellent output for the likes of Freerange Records, Compost Records, Plastic City and Poetry In Motion Records is always fresh, invigorating stuff which combines deep textures with grooves that are so expertly sculpted they're nigh-on impossible to sit still to. We're chuffed to have him contribute to our series at last, and to discover some of his absolute gems we missed in years gone by. *How would you describe your sound?* If I were to analyze my own sound I'd say it's a culmination of all the musical influences I've gathered throughout my close to 47 years of existence. My music is always some sort of weird combination of techno, house, jungle, jazz, soul and disco influences. Most often my tracks end up in the Deep House sections in stores. In my tracks there's always a certain bit of Scandinavian melancholy or bittersweet sadness. Even in the most uplifting tracks and remixes I've done over the years. :D. I'm a super positive and upbeat person so I don't know where that bit comes from. Perhaps it's the 10 months of yearly darkness here in the north which generates the melancholy. I'm not super into trends and I always aim for a timeless quality rather than a quick fix. Firstly I aim to please my own ears and produce music that makes me feel something. If the music moves me then there's a high probability that others will be moved by it as well. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I listen to and get my inspiration from all music I hear. As much as I get inspired by the works of legends, i do get more inspired by new talent and new producers who break the rules and come up with something new and unique. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* I was very pleased to be invited to the series and in taking this challenge of picking only my own productions for the mix. As emotional as it was to go through my tracks, It wasn't an easy task to narrow it down. In the end I decided to exclude all of my more disco Manolo stuff as well as all my other monikers and focus on my main RR output. The mix is sort of like Roberto Rodriguez in a nutshell. It features my house tracks that mean the most to me at this moment in time. Hope you'll like the listening experience. Tracklist: 01. Roberto Rodriguez - Sensible Jungle Tune 02. Roberto Rodriguez - Thought Experiment 03. Roberto Rodriguez - Thinking Of You 04. Roberto Rodriguez - Mother 05. Roberto Rodriguez - Pride 06. Shahrokh Sound Of K - Love Happens feat. One of South Africa's biggest house music producers and label owner of the formidable Stay True Sounds takes the reins of the Monologues Podcast for an hour of deep, soulful productions from his oeuvre. *How would you describe your sound?* - Always soulful, very influenced by what surrounds me, which is a very enthusiastic South African deep house audience, a nod to the broken beat era with a heavy dose of deepness. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* - I have been in the dance music business here in SA for over 20 years and I am a fan of other artists music firstly, from Fka Mash, Zaki Ibrahim to Okmalumkoolkat and Jullian Gomes and everyone in between. It all somehow comes out in my own productions in my own way. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* - It's a showcase of my own productions and people that I love who have remixed my music, a lot of collabs and a proper showcase of what I represent as a DJ, label owner and producer. Swedish globetrotter Lukas Lyrestam has built up a steady catalogue of warm house jams infused with melodic '80s influences in recent years, through his own Clouded House imprint through to labels like Skint and Hardrock Striker's Skylax Records. With a tasty vocal in him too and a day job in sound design, he's quite the package and cooks up a lovely hour of his own productions for us that's constantly colourful and groove-laden. “How would you describe your sound?” OG house and classic 80s heaters with a touch of Scandi flair! Sultry vocals by yours truly. "What and who inspires you and influences your sound?” Literally everything in the electronic spectrum tends to seep into my subconscious and makes its way into the music I make. With deep roots in the game, he produces a sound that combines house and garage with touches of jazz and heavier styles in effortless fashion, with a great ear for a hook and sweet melodies. Mixing nothing but his own productions, he's put together a joyous hour. *How would you describe your sound?* Thrilogy is organic, dusty, old record-sampling deep house and techno. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Old US house/garage labels, seminal DJs. Nu Groove, Strictly Rhythm & Trax classics never leave the box; but also, an underlying influence and infatuation of cutting edge and bass from years of Bristol underground. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* When creating a mix of all your own tunes, they rarely go together, but I wholeheartedly enjoyed DJing them all nice and loud for you! It's a mix of my favourite productions and a some new bits. Disco edits, piano house belters and soulful house grooves from the German producer who has been making waves on labels like SlothBoogie and Jazz Cabbage. Unreleased material ahoy… *How would you describe your sound?* Always danceable, sometimes cheeky, mostly unpolished. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The sudden impulse I get when I hear a certain sound or sample or melody, which leads the way then into the creative process. A very general thing I guess. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* So this is the very first mix I ever did that only consists of my own music (yeah..ok, there's like some edits, but you get what I mean). I always found it super hard to integrate my own tracks into DJ mixes, never finding the right timing. The mere idea of compiling a mix of 100% home-baked goods was a bit stressful in the beginning, ngl. In the end I have to say I'm quite happy with the result as I feel there's a good flow in the tracklist. It's pretty early days for Milanese duo The Robinson, but they captured our attention very quickly with their brilliant, sprawling tracks. On a Body & Soul tip, their production effortlessly combines with the organic and the synthetic, with many a dazzling synth sound relaying beautiful melodies and atmospheric touches. Futureboogie Records saw their potential, snapping up their 'Nightmares' EP and lacing it with a remix by none other than the legend Ron Trent. This mix comprises 100% unreleased material from their studio, and features three tracks that will form an EP for our label in mid-2021. *How would you describe your sound?* Our sound is a mix between the underground Chicago House grooves and Italo House beats of the 90s. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The main inspiration for our music comes from our regular daily life, which is often accompanied by the melodies of the greats: Ron Trent, Glenn Underground, Boo Williams, Joe Claussel among others. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* This mix is the story of a journey from the countryside to the city, a journey we often take when coming home from visiting our parents. We're delighted to have New York house legend Jovonn mix our latest episode. Producing essential deep cuts since 1990, he counts hundreds of releases and has rarely faltered in the quality of his no-nonsense, hard-grooving output. He's put together a retrospective of his own recent and older material, showing his quality in using just a few ingredients to create an addictive track, with a smattering of quality vocals and seamless mixing. Californian producer Coflo has been frequently catching our attention over the last year or so with his soulful, organic house jams. Receiving major support from Osunlade and his Yoruba Records family, his knack for expansive melody and warm groove puts him among the lineage of great American deep/soulful/afro house producers, and we're very happy to have him share his vision on our podcast. *How would you describe your sound?* To be honest, I don't think I have a sound. I make whatever I feel like making and I collaborate with whomever I make friends with and wants to do some creative ish'. People always want a box to genre-fy things. I tell people that I make American house music. I am an American just doing my tiny part to keep the beautiful sounds and dance of house music culture going. I tend to be drawn to sounds and ideas that are of the African diaspora — be it Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban or Afro-American. The music I fell in love with, at its core, is black American music. So that is what my sound is. I have a massive amount of pride in being raised in house music culture, and it feels good to share whatever "sound" comes out. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The influence on what I make can change like the wind. So many different types of art inspire me to make music. I draw a lot of inspiration from movement arts and visual arts. I almost never start with a blank slate. Something always enters my mind's eye visually and then turns into sound eventually. I can easily cite two people for the influence on me continuing to create music. Those two people would be Ron Trent and Osunlade. Both of them have carved a path that many should feel blessed to walk on. Their dedication and longevity to something that is ultimately about people and the art is incredibly inspiring. I study all of their tunes intensely. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*Not really sure it means something profound to me. As this series is about sharing the producer/artists work, I just picked songs in the moment. A lot of what I do in art is improvised, be it dance or music etc. I have a huge back catalog of music and just about every song means something fairly profound to me. I make a lot of music and there are no favourites. I tried to pick tunes that may flow nicely together and touch on a range of ideas. I could easily put together a mix of my songs that have extremes, but it didn't feel fitting for just an hour long mix. To be sentimental, this mix does end with my first 12" single, 'Easy' with my close friend Lady C. Tracklist: Coflo - Beija-Flor [Catch The Ghost Records] Coflo - Playground Samba [Ocha Records] Free Association - Polyrhythm Jizm (Coflo Edit) [BBE Music] Po-lar-i-ty - Nawlins (Coflo remix) [Yoruba Records] Evar After - Pocket (Coflo Deep Remix) [Merecumbe Records] Coflo - Stress Relief (original Mix) [Ocha Records] QVLN - Keepin On (Coflo & Tomahawk Bang Remix) [Ocha Records] Coflo - Rescue Him [Ocha Records] Coflo - Lux (Alternative Mix) [Local Talk] Coflo & Lady C - Easy [Ocha Records]

Check out our latest label releases + free downloads at http://monologuesrecords.bandcamp.com Sam Ruffillo is one of our favourite upcoming producers, pushing a delightfully jazzy, soulful, organic deep house sound that oozes class. Hailing from Bologna, he’s making waves rapidly through releases on Toy Tonics, Boogie Cafe and IRMA, and we predict big things for him. His music is laced with hazy keys, trumpets, flutes and all manner of warm and groovy sounds, with live instrumentation from the man himself and his friends decking out his very solid grooves. From the lounge to the dance floor, he impresses at every turn. *How would you describe your sound?* I’d say it’s somewhere between deep, lounge and colorful house music. I’m obsessed by grooves so I hope my sound would be described as a groovy one :) *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I draw inspiration from genres such as jazz, afro funk, soul and disco... all kind of Black music basically but also by French touch, Italian music from the ‘70s and ‘90s hip-hop. I’m very much into art as well, especially renaissance and contemporary art inspire me the most. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It represents the last couple years of studio work and releases. His mixture of deep house and techno flavours, occasional snatches of African rhythm and his haunting, moody, vocal style give his tracks an inimitable sound, and this glorious mix takes you from his deepest moments to some of his most heady. Formerly of !K7 Records, Live At Robert Johnson, Dial and Perlon to name but a few, his sterling reputation continued with the recent ’The Transit Of Mercury’ album on his newly-minted Khoikhoi Records label. *How would you describe your sound?*Music that elevates into another plane of thought, via rhythm and future primitive tones. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* It’s pretty broad, but generally speaking anything outside the norm — be it film, nature, music or art. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The majority of the material is from the last year or so and from my own label Khoikhoi Records, which is named after a tribe of South Africa, the region where I grew up and are my indirect ancestors, so the selection of tracks represents this new independent phase I am in. We're really excited to welcome Modern House Quintet to the podcast. The Parisian duo have been putting out some superb freewheeling analog jams in recent times, focusing on slow-burning grooves and melodic improvisation (see also some lush sounds under their Cyclades moniker). Their wonderful mix for us is almost entirely comprised of unreleased material, all made by their own fair hands as is the Monologues Podcast way. *How would you describe your sound?* It’s always a tricky question. I would say that I try to do different things every time. A concrete example : the new release (CYC 003) contains five tracks which are quite unalike : one is a piano and guitar "housy" piece. The other is more dub-techno oriented. The third one has a more delicate house feeling, whereas the next one has a breakbeat-jungle vibe. The final one is kind of a vibraphonic interlude. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Lots of immense jazz musicians : Milt Jackson, Red Garland, Kenny Drew, Tommy Flanagan, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Clifford Brown, Kenny Clarke. Within the electronic scene : Lars Bartkhun, Basic Channel, Mike Grant, Omar S, Anthony Nicholson, Ron Trent, Volcov. Outside the electronic scene : Steve Reich and Philip Glass. On a different perspective, there is also the work of the dubplates & mastering engineers: Helmut Erler, Christoph Grote-Beverborg or Rashad Becker. The lacquering/cutting process has always been fascinating to me. It’s not an "influence" strictly speaking, obviously, but their work is impressive and it is inspiring somehow, yes. There are also soundtracks and movies, of course : as such, the italian TV show "Gomorra" is a wonder ("Suburra" as well by the way). The guys from Mokadelic did an incredible work. And I really like Eric Rohmer's movies, even though there is little music in them. All these things have, one way or another, an influence. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The mix gathers strictly unreleased productions and one song previously released in 2018, on the Modern House Quintet label. I tried to do something varied, quite heterogenous so that the listener - and me - cannot be bored. Therefore, some songs are more techno, some have a sort of an ethereal atmosphere whereas others have a more "housy" feeling. Some are sketches whereas others are more "completed". About the tracklisting, I simply wrote "unreleased" with a short indication next to it, merely because I don’t have an accurate title yet, haha. Tracklist:1. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the atmospheric one)2. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jazzy/vibraphonic one)3. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the slow techno one)4. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the arpeggio one)5. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the techno bassy one)6. Modern House Quintet - LD 3 (MHQ 008)7. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the strictly techno one)8. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jazzy one)9. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jungle/breakbeat one) Want more music? Click here to listen to our new release from Manakinz on 'Dialogue Vol. 4' Follow Manakinz on SoundCloud No-one is making house music we love more right now than Manakinz. The newly-minted project of Sub Club legend Harri and his production partner Max, Manakinz make hot, heavy, relentless, chunky-ass house music. Thickly packed with layers of samples, rolling percussion, disco grooves, rasping synths all licked by fat distortion, their tracks absolutely go off in the club. Play one and you’ll see and hear the mood change. We’re ecstatic to be releasing a bunch of their material through Monologues Records over the coming months, kicking off with ‘Robopubez (Rust In Peace)’ on our ‘Dialogue Vol. 4’ vinyl sampler on September 20. We wanted to give them a proper introduction, so here’s their slammin’ mix of unreleased material, with a slew of Monologues bits in there. And Billy Connolly…? *How would you describe your sound?*Genre-neutral dance music for all the family.*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*Having fun, dub, soul, jazz, afrobeat, house, techno, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Norman Whitfield, Fela Kuti and Henrik Schwarz. From the embers of Mock & Toof (DFA, Mule Musiq) came Metropolitan Soul Museum: a collaboration between Nick from the duo and his pal Filippo. Explorers of the deep, they have released on Toy Tonics, Catz & Dogz’s Step, Beats Of No Nation and Rawax, and will soon release an EP on Monologues Records. With a love of analog gear and deep deep sounds imbued with a soulful edge, their distinctive style is both hypnotic and groovy that blends house and techno history in equal measures (a healthy dash of Detroit therein). Let them take you on a trip through their catalogue and some forthcoming releases. *How would you describe your sound?* Melodic, analog and... *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* From jazz to electronic music, it really changes every day. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* We are quite happy to have manage to play our music only and what came out is actually a homogeneous mix with an organic and natural progression. Danish talent Paxton Fettel has made a resounding return to the fore this year after a few years off. His piano-heavy disco & house jams on his longtime home Greta Cottage Workshop and Delusions Of Grandeur are some of the most joyous tracks we’ve heard this year, but his catalogue stretches back to 2010 via releases on Kolour LTD, Plumage and Apersonal. His deeply melodic, organic grooves suggest a musically trained creator, but he’s all self-taught. Ahead of an EP for Monologues Records later this year, we invite one of house music’s most irresistible creators to guide us round his oeuvre. Spectacular results with plenty of exclusives. Tracklist: Paxton Fettel - Back You Want Don't I? With this mix. What and who inspires you and influences your sound? People around me, and new music I discover. I think a lot of times inspiration and influences happen subconsciously. I suppose I am inspired by every minute of my life, it all has influence. Even writing this might have an impact on my future, who knows. Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you? I tried to capture the essence of my music in one hour. New stuff, old stuff, and stuff I primarily use in my DJ sets. Sometimes it's a vocal sample over an original production of mine, and sometimes it's more of a classic edit in a way. Like the first track, for example, which has Ramona Brooks chopped and resliced. Classic Paxton edit material, some might say. Then a few classics from the back catalogue. Then the latter part of the mix is mostly self-recorded disco instrumentals with or without vocal samples on it. It's always really fun to put your songs together in new and interesting ways. It makes me (and hopefully you) experience them in new ways. Again something I learn from and take with me to future productions. This mixtape is also an opportunity for me to show people some of the diversity in what I do, and give a focused lesson in my universe of sound, and thought on music. For that I am very grateful.

Our next party - March 30 @ Farbfernseher, Berlin www.facebook.com/events/530774210740927/ - last one at Farb! Buy / save / stream Richu's new Monologues EP smarturl.it/richumonologues Rotterdam based Pole Richu M is the man behind our latest release, his gorgeous EP of loungey sample-heavy noodly grooves known as 'Philistines 4 & The Giant Banoush' also providing the artwork for this and our last few releases, creating IRL paintings and developing a tasty live set with releases elsewhere coming on Astropical and Young Adults. This mix is a journey through his crazed artist's mind, 100% unreleased and mostly unsigned sketches and jams. Displaying his strength for arrangement, melody, top crate digging and warm-yet-scuzzy production, it's a beautiful listen. *How would you describe your sound?* Not "house" enough to play at club, too "housy" for home listening. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I prefer very diverse music - it's supposed to be good for the brain. When it comes to the (let's say) current club scene, I have my favorites, which inevitably inspire me: Tartelet recs, Lagaffe Tales, Yappin, Jazz Cabbage, Studio Barnhus, Apron recs, m$r (rip), Ava recs, Sex Tags and more... *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The mix is a selection of my unreleased tracks from the years 2014-2019. Digging in these (sometimes) forgotten tunes, became a very emotional journey. A lot of memories: different places, people, parties, moods and situations in general. Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases and grab some free downloads: http://soundcloud.com/monologues Girls of The Internet is the sound of a music-industry long-timer reinventing themselves, indulging their love of classic disco house while also producing soulful live organic cuts. Their mix for us is a riotous journey through house music past, present and future. *How would you describe your sound?* Patrick Adams making records for Dance Mania. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The biggest influence for me right now is seeing people enjoy our music, it completely blows me away when people message to say they like our stuff, especially when women or members of the LGBTQ+ community. Electronic music is such a horrible schlong fest, and so many of the male DJs act so horrendously in the way they treat women at shows. It’s great to know we’re appealing to more than just banty lads. Another big influence is our collaborators; the vocalists and illustrators/painters we get to work with through the band are all amazing, and hugely inspirational to work with. Anybody who has ever met me will know how important Stereolab are to me, as I’ve probably tried to shame you into listening to them at some point. I love Chaka Khan, Patrick Adams. I could list musical influences for ages, but it would be pretty boring. I don’t have any big secrets nobody else has, and I’ve always tried to share music I love to whoever is listening to me. Some of my early influences in house were Pepe Bradock, Cajual, Basic Channel, Armand Van Helden, Henry Street, Masters At Work... I don’t listen to too much modern house — it has to be pretty incredible for me to need to add it to my collection. What I take away from other people’s music is how certain sounds work together; how a drum hit and a weird noise work together in a Prince record, or how a saturated kick in a Green Velvet record affects the mood of the track is where my brain goes. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It’s mainly sample based stuff we’re releasing on the run up to our debut album. Normally we work with musicians and vocalists, but I’m completely obsessed with ‘90s disco house, so I made a load of tracks while the album comes together. Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy looping disco records was what started everything — disco loops and drum machines are the purest form of house music as far as I’m concerned. House should be fun, and I wanted to try and convey the fun side of Girls’ with these EPs. I feel like I’m cheating when I sample other people’s music, which is why I try and call it an ‘edit’ or ‘mixtape’ when I’m looping other people’s work. The non-sample, full band, full production stuff is; our debut single ‘When U Go' which got picked up by Classic, which is the first full piece of music I made myself. 'Fondness Makes The Heart Grow Absent', which we self released last year, and it’s already been licensed for a few big compilations this year. It started life as a remix I did for somebody that got rejected, so I took all the original parts I recorded for the remix — guitar, bass, cut them up, added some synths and turned it into a loose cover of ‘It’ll All Be Over’ by The Supreme Jubilees, with Gershom Brown on vocals. The last track on the mix is called ‘Humble’ and features ex-Brand New Heavies vocalist and one of my good buddies Linda Muriel. It’s the lead single from our upcoming album. It’s a 2-steppy garage-ish thing. I made a version with live instruments, but I've ended up using the demo version with me playing everything on keyboard for the album, as it was impactful than the live version. I wanted to use a bit more music from the album on this mix, but it’s a bit too early to play too much of it publicly. Oh also, there is a remix of a track I made with the Ballroom MC Princess Precious Ebony, who features heavily on the Viceland documentary series ’My House’, and is an incredible person and a pleasure to work with. It’ll probably be a B-side to one of the singles from the album. I’ve been involved in music for a long time behind the scenes, and I’m just amazed at the incredible reaction we get for Girls’ stuff so far. We have a small group of fans who are so supportive and send us such amazing messages all the time. It’s really humbling. The music industry can be a horrible place — often unpleasant people behaving awfully with shady agendas and negative energy. It’s amazing to be involved in something that’s just about positivity and making great music. Cousins Joshua Doherty and Richard Bevan have been pushing tough underground electronic sounds since 2000. Making their name in part to a series of parties in an abandoned London Underground train station in the first half of the noughties, they founded Seed Records and more recently Balkan Vinyl and have released a steady stream of quality bangers, with a penchant for acid and old rave sounds. Doherty has been running 303-focused parties under the I Love Acid banner since 2007, and in recent years launched an accompanying label, where the likes of Luke Vibert, Snuff Crew, Cardopusher, Perseus Traxx and Affie Yusuf have all released tracks on a limited number of 303 vinyl copies. Their mix for us encompasses unreleased goodies, productions for the likes of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Hardfloor Records and Craigie Knowes, and plenty of varied licks. *How would you describe your sound?* Sci-fi acid house and hectic electro rave. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Everything from classic house of Chicago and techno of Detroit in the ‘80s, through to European rave and techno in the ‘90s, and the explosion of genres and ideas since then all over the world. After 20+ years doing this, still having moments when you hear something new and instantly think "Wow, I want to write something with that vibe" *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It features a lot of our dancefloor focused, high energy tracks from the last couple of years, plus some unreleased and upcoming gear (although the opening track is from a decade ago) This mix is along the vibes of the kind of set we are playing in clubs right now. Decked out with choice samples, raw textures, rough edges and low-slung funk, it's the sound of someone with mastery over their equipment. From hazy house through to the recent 2-step garage adventure of his new 'Lavender' on Kerri Chandler's Madhouse Records imprint, this is a delectable journey through his brain. *How would you describe your sound?* House music with a jacking attitude and mad sampling crime. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The '90s and early 2000s house music sound from Detroit, warm distortion and neo soul vibes. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* I never felt such a time travel while mixing my own works from the past years together. Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases and to get free downloads http://soundcloud.com/monologues The Scottish-born, Copenhagen-based purveyor of fine grooves and one half of 6thboroughproject serves up an hour of his most supremely chuggy slo-mo disco flavours for us. Languid grooves for sticky nights. *How would you describe your sound?* Eclectic I guess. I'm a lover of music in general so I gravitate towards anything with emotion that moves me. That's the framework really - and my production and sound flexes around that regardless genre. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Many things are the seeds of inspiration for me, not just music. It can be films, experiences, feelings ... they are as important as musical influences which stretch across the genres. I love great sounding records from bands like Steely Dan or Earth, Wind & Fire ... but equally love dirty sounding records from people like Moodymann or Gangstarr. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* I planned to do something across the bpm spectrum but didn't quite realise how much stuff I had done! So I stuck to a slow, chuggy groove featuring some older tracks I'd been involved in over the years. I've always loved that sort of tempo for starting a night off, and although I play a lot of house sets these days I always relish playing this sort of groove if I get to kick the party off. Italy's I-Robots is one of the most prolific re-editers in the game, putting out a slew of official reworks via his Opilec Music label. With his DJ career stretching back to the early '80s and with a sideline as a second-hand record dealer, his knowledge is impeccable. Uncovering rarities and forgotten gems, he manipulates tracks in both classic chop 'n' splice edit style and also in more complex arrangements. This mix is a journey through his edit suite. *How would you describe your sound?*"Nomad Sound" for sure... Monologues returns to Farbfernseher, Berlin on Saturday 17 March Aroop Roy has come from seemingly nowhere to become a major force in recent times, with his eclectic blend of disco, house and worldly flavours fusing brilliantly on smash releases like Talkin Bout Life and his sumptuous My Home EP on Lazy Days Recordings. But he’s been grinding for a minute, having first released in 2007, putting out a debut album in 2010 and a steady stream of 12”s since. It just goes to show that talent and persistence always wins in the end. His Monologues mix shows a producer in full swing, with some of his very tasty edits woven in along the way. *How would you describe your sound?* I make a wide range of music with few genre barriers. A lot of my dancefloor releases blend organic and soulful sounds including african, Latin, jazz and funk music, with deeper elements of house and modern disco music. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* - My sound reflects my eclectic tastes. I grew up listening to everything from rock, pop and hip hop to soul, jazz and classical. Living in Brighton, I had access to a vibrant community of record stores and this together with radio also opened up the world of dance music. I've played in indie bands, funk bands and even a Jimi Hendrix covers band (I was indeed Jimi!). It would be impossible to make a comprehensive list of influences, but a few examples would include Herbie Hancock, Fela Kuti, Radiohead, The Mizell Brothers, Azymuth. The radio shows of Gilles Peterson and Brighton hero Russ Dewbury were also hugely important in opening my ears even further. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The mix is a collection of releases from the past few years right up to a few forthcoming cuts, combining original tracks, collaborations, reworks and a few edits. It represents the diversity of my output but also joins the dots between tracks that might initially seem to be very different to each other. Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases first http://soundcloud.com/monologues Utrecht duo Fouk have emerged from the new wave of Dutch house and disco artists like Detroit Swindle and Nachtbraker, in no small part thanks to the former’s Heist Recordings. Through there and other avenues like their own Outplay label, House Of Disco Recordings and Razor-N-Tape Reserve, they have pushed their patchwork of grooves with great success over the last couple of years. With a knack for crafting infectious keys solos and sourcing the most pleasing of analog synth sounds, they have made themselves known for an assured, highly musical sound. How would you describe your sound? Warm house music with a lot of soul and funk. We aim to make people smile with our music. :) What and who inspires you and influences your sound? The dreaded question! In general jazz, funk and disco from the ‘70s / ‘80s. It’s always hard to give a specific answer to this. But our tastes are pretty varied and we can get inspired by good art, great nights out playing and fun with friends; relaxation and fun feeds creativity. Also we get inspired by others in the genre of course — it’s inevitable! Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you? Monologues returns to Farbfernseher Berlin on December 8 with Jad & The + Ben Gomori https://www.residentadvisor.net/events/1024040 With a keen sense for melodic hooks and a rarely paralleled knack for uncovering delectable samples, Berlin-based Australian producer Jad & The is making some of the tastiest deeper house music of the moment. With releases on Toy Tonics, 2mr and Axe On Wax all doing the damage and his own Beats Of No Nation label also doing the damn thing, he’s made a serious mark on our minds this year. His mix closes with his breakbeat-focused remix for our very own Leon Revol, showing that he’s still got a lot more breadth to offer. *How would you describe your sound?* To be honest I'm still yet to discover my true sound. My 40 unfinished Ableton sessions of completely different musical genres will prove this. Maybe one day I'll pinpoint 'my sound' but just now I'm still experimenting and constantly evolving stylistically and musically. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I'm very inspired by old disco, soul, funk, afrobeat, and jazz records. I'm constantly digging trying to discover sample sources or inspiration. I'm very into the art of sampling and hip-hop guys like Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Dilla, Madlib and co. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It was a funny experience listening to some records I made three or more years ago. Monologues returns to Farbfernseher Berlin on December 8 with Jad & The + Ben Gomori https://www.residentadvisor.net/events/1024040 Something a bit special from the vaults this month. Ramsey & Fen were amongst the most prolific and pioneering producers in the UK garage scene from the latter half of the '90s into the 2000s. Their intrictate grooves, skipping percussion and weighty basslines were emblematic of the sound that the London scene birthed that would eventually lead on to grime, dubstep and all the sub-genres and hybrids that followed. Their legacy aside, they simply made immensely catchy feel-good music that oozed soul and groove from every pore. We're chuffed to have them dig out an old mix that only ever appeared as a promo CD, comprised of course of nothing but their own much-lauded productions. Ethyène and his Moonrise Hill Material crew have come seemingly out of nowhere to become some of 2017’s most in-demand deep house & disco purveyors. Alongside Folamour, Kaffe Crème and St. Clair, the quartet have delivered tonnes of acclaimed music on their own and other labels , as the French themselves might say. Ethyène’s love of hip-hop as well as 4/4 also shines through on this mix which takes in some of his downtempo excursions alongside dancefloor grooves, with plenty of unreleased action on the way. Sample-heavy, charming stuff with an almost pop-like sensibility. *How would you describe your sound?* I mainly produce downtempo house music and hip-hop built around samples. As a producer who loves to sample, I guess my music is at the crossroads between all the genres I'm daily digging with an important focus on natural grooves & ‘90s black music. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* I've been listening to tons of hip-hop when I was younger thanks to my family living in Philadelphia which is close to NYC and is the city of Jazzy Jeff and The Roots. As a huge Nas fan, I think I discovered sampling through DJ Premier and immediately felt in love with it. I discovered then sample-based house music thanks to the French scene classics like Pépé Bradock, St Germain and started to have a huge interest in this genre until I got into the early Detroit house scene—Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Andrés—and decided this was the music I wanted to do. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* This mix features tracks from almost of my releases until today. I feel kind of proud to have been asked to record a 100% Ethyène mix and being able not to spend such an unpleasant hour listening to it, haha...
