This Week The Crew Breaks Down: NBA Finals Game 3 Zion Williamson's Debacle Chris Paul Gets Waived
A husband-and-wife Americana duo, Carolina Story create powerfully atmospheric songs with the combination of their heartfelt stories of love and struggle and the honesty and passion of their vocals.Featuring Ben and Emily Roberts, Carolina Story was formed in 2009, two years after they first met. Ben hailed from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and formed his first band when he was in junior high, playing guitar and writing songs. He spent a year playing football while studying at a college in Boston, but he left Beantown to relocate to North Carolina before enrolling at Visible Music College in Memphis, Tennessee. Ben met fellow student Emily on campus; originally from Lennox, South Dakota, she came to Memphis both to study and pursue her career as a performer and songwriter. As the two got to know one another, they discovered they were compatible both as a couple and as musical collaborators, and while Emily was jokingly proposing baby names, she coined Carolina Story, which Ben felt would be an even better name for their group. The latest full-length Album, Colors of My Mind took shape from a period of tremendous pain and metamorphosis, one which made this album an inspiring piece of art, and one of the year's most powerful albums so far.
We knew that Over The Rhine's Nowhere Else Festival was going to be something special. We've heard about the meals, the music, the songs being sung under a big tent in their wide Ohio backyard. And yes, we grew up seeing Over The Rhine play show after breathtaking show under a similar tent at the Cornerstone Festival in West Central Illinois. We knew it would be great. But we were still not prepared for just how wonderful two days of understated, organic, family-style music could be. A steady drizzle of rain couldn't come close to dampening the spirits on that rural farm, and on this episode of the podcast, we do our best to take you there. One of the hallmarks of Nowhere Else is that Karin and Linford of Over The Rhine always assemble a treasure trove of talent to accompany them for their “musical family reunion.” This cast – often comprised of fellow Americana (and Americana-adjacent) artists they have met out on the road – play concerts, participate in writer rounds, and offer creative workshops and seminars. While some will usually be relatively familiar to fans of this kind of music – and at least one will have earned “legend” status – there will always be at least a few that are relative unknowns. Though she has been a regular at Nowhere Else in recent years, we were not familiar with soul / gospel / r&b artist and full-time “culture coach” Nikki Lerner until shortly before the festival. But after we attended her morning session, called “Finding Your Voice Through Improv,” we knew she needed to join us on the podcast. I'm sure you will find her just as brilliant, insightful, hilarious, and soulful as we have. And Bruce has loaded up the Jukebox with records from ALL of the artists on this year's Nowhere Else lineup. In addition to Nikki, you'll hear tunes from Iris Dement, Carrie Newcomer, Hayes Carll, The Winetree, Courtney Marie Andrews, Carolina Story, John Fullbright; Wille Tea Taylor, Ben Sollee, Vance Gilbert, and of course, Over the Rhine. Ben and Emily of Carolina Story first met in Memphis, TN. The Arkansas and South Dakota natives took a chance on a start-up school program, but more importantly, they started their relationship as they were forming the band. They admit it was never easy from the beginning. Ben shares the financial and emotional woes of writing in Nashville when they first began as a duo. The constant no's or being told that they are left of center began to take its toll. Ben and Emily swore they wrote the last song that they'd ever write. Even life's moments were validating them for more of a domestic lifestyle, but then serendipity has a way of kicking the doors wide open. Now celebrating their second LP, Dandelion, we take a look at how their producer Paul Moak helped them discover the value of a character as opposed to the ego of an artist. Then the identity of a married duo and the challenges of when work meets life. As songwriters, you share pretty deep feelings that most wouldn't tell their spouse that can sometimes be oversharing. Well, what if now you learn new things about your marriage you weren't prepared for. Could it be a burden or freeing for the world to know those special moments and feelings? In 1915, Georgia O'Keeffe radically redefined herself as an artist. Rejecting all she had done before, she found her voice with a series of black and white charcoal drawings she collectively titled, Specials. Her great Charleston friend, Anita Pollitzer, took these drawings, unbeknownst to the artist, and showed them to Alfred Stieglitz (noted American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art) who proclaimed, "At last, a woman on paper." This was the beginning of one of the most important careers in all of American art.

Ben and Emily Roberts met in Memphis and fell in love while making sweet music together as Carolina Story. Since 2009, the duo has been hard at work touring, writing, and putting out music they believe in. Last fall they released their latest E-P “Chapter One,” which is still rising on the Americana charts. We had a chance to catch up with the couple on the set of their music video for “Your Children’s Children.”
