We knew that Over The Rhine's Nowhere Else Festival was going to be something special. We've heard about the meals, the music, the songs being sung under a big tent in their wide Ohio backyard. And yes, we grew up seeing Over The Rhine play show after breathtaking show under a similar tent at the Cornerstone Festival in West Central Illinois. We knew it would be great. But we were still not prepared for just how wonderful two days of understated, organic, family-style music could be. A steady drizzle of rain couldn't come close to dampening the spirits on that rural farm, and on this episode of the podcast, we do our best to take you there. One of the hallmarks of Nowhere Else is that Karin and Linford of Over The Rhine always assemble a treasure trove of talent to accompany them for their “musical family reunion.” This cast – often comprised of fellow Americana (and Americana-adjacent) artists they have met out on the road – play concerts, participate in writer rounds, and offer creative workshops and seminars. While some will usually be relatively familiar to fans of this kind of music – and at least one will have earned “legend” status – there will always be at least a few that are relative unknowns. Though she has been a regular at Nowhere Else in recent years, we were not familiar with soul / gospel / r&b artist and full-time “culture coach” Nikki Lerner until shortly before the festival. But after we attended her morning session, called “Finding Your Voice Through Improv,” we knew she needed to join us on the podcast. I'm sure you will find her just as brilliant, insightful, hilarious, and soulful as we have. And Bruce has loaded up the Jukebox with records from ALL of the artists on this year's Nowhere Else lineup. In addition to Nikki, you'll hear tunes from Iris Dement, Carrie Newcomer, Hayes Carll, The Winetree, Courtney Marie Andrews, Carolina Story, John Fullbright; Wille Tea Taylor, Ben Sollee, Vance Gilbert, and of course, Over the Rhine. BEN SOLLEE is Kentucky-born cellist, singer-songwriter, and composer known for his innovative playing style, genre-bending songwriting, electrifying performances, political activism, and wide appeal. Like his contemporaries Chris Thile and Abigail Washburn, Sollee's music is difficult to pin down. It's Ben's quality of narrative and presence on stage that unifies his musical influences. This past year Ben has performed at Carnegie Hall, wrote the score for the documentary film Maidentrip, toured for two weeks in Europe and returned to the United States to perform with the Charlotte Ballet. THE PORTLAND CELLO PROJECT has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances. Since the group's inception in late 2007, the group has built a reputation mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. No two shows are alike, with a repertoire now numbering over 1,000 pieces of music both expected and unexpected to come from a cello. The Cello Project's stage setup ranges from the very simple (4-6 cellos), to the all out epic (which has included 12 cellos playing with full choirs, winds, horns, and numerous percussion players). WoodSongs Kid: Lily Murphy is 15 years old and from Midway, Kentucky. She started playing cello in the 7th grade with the orchestra.
On this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, on the Broadway Podcast Network, I chat with singer/songwriter Dawn Landes about: Her original music Composing her first musical ROW Her Kentucky roots Rowing - the sport Rapid Fire questions End with Dawn "Baring It All" with something she's never talked about before Dawn is getting ready to release the music from her first musical, ROW (written by Daniel Goldstein) and inspired by Tori Murden McClure, the first women to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. ROW was supposed to have premiered during the Summer of 2020 at Williamstown Theatre Festival, but due to the global pandemic, it was postponed. However, Audible has picked up the show to record in the Fall of 2020. Dawn has five previous albums under her belt, including one in French. Her albums are: Meet Me At The River, Bluebird, Sweetheart Radio, Fireproof, and Mal Habillée (The French EP). Row will be available on all music streaming platforms on Friday, October 2. Songs such as “Try to Make a Fire Burn Again,” “Bodyguard,” and “Straight Lines” have built her reputation as one of our best independent singer-songwriters, showcasing an ability to tell stories that makes her the perfect choice to write the songs for a musical like ROW. The show’s songs not only resonate in these trying times, they also make up an album that is a remarkable production and a collection of moving, powerful songs that take us on a journey with an unstoppable woman. There’s the rousing show-stopper “Independent Spirit,” about conjuring all of our courage in the face of impossible odds, backed by a cooing chorus and lyrics that illuminate the long legacy of pioneers who refused to be quelled by daunting obstacles. Dawn has managed to create a soundtrack that is simultaneously consistent and eclectic. A lamenting fiddle drives the dreamy waltz “Dear Heart” while the Jewish music tradition steers the prayerful “Avinu Malkeinu, Star of the Sea” and elements of Shakespeare’s King Lear inform the tempest-conjuring “Third Storm, King Lear.” “Second Storm, Hamlet” showcases Sonus Choir, a Nashville-based classical a capella choir, in a collaboration that Dawn says was a highlight of the project. There is also the showstopper “Row,” in which the spirits of Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, and Cher, (voiced by singers Carly Johnson, Sheryl Rouse and Kimmet Cantwell, respectively) act as sirens of encouragement to the show’s heroine. Other guests include Will Oldham offering a moving reading of the tender love song “Second Time Around”; Brigid Kaelin providing soaring vocals on “Oh Amelia”, a duet with Dawn; Tyrone Cotton singing as Muhammad Ali on “What Would Odysseus Do?;” and Ben Sollee as Tori’s sweet middle school crush on “Ode to Eric Fee.” The guest list reads like a who’s who of Louisville-based musicians, fitting since it’s also the hometown of Dawn and the play’s subject, Tori Mulden McClure. 056: Aaron WhitbyGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, September 16th of 2020 Music is not content, it’s connection.Today we are blessed to have Aaron Whitby with us. But first here’s a random thought: Music used to be important. And it was a haven for the self important. It still sort of is, but musicians no longer make the same level of impact economically or culturally. It’s not quite running on fumes, but nowadays most of us would be happy for musicmaking to be merely sustainable. Some might even say that being sustainable is better than being important. But guess what? Back in that golden age when music was quote “really important”, it was not sustainable then either. What I mean is that we take our literal life in our hands when we choose to set about making music. It’s a risk, man. We’re actually getting closer to sustainability now, you could say it’s a beautiful time (aside from it being the apocalypse). Most of the time music works out ok if you work hard enough, make decent choices and keep your priorities more or less in line. But it’s not a magic ticket to some rarefied kind of existence where you get to hold yourself above other people. I mean, in America you can run your business however you see fit, but there are two sides to this coin: you find the fan who worships at the altar of the musician they love, and the musician who sometimes seems like they might just be seeking to be worshiped above all else - whose ego may be running the show.I won’t name any of them, but you know the trope. You probably also know that it’s not that simple. Not all musicians are provocateurs, serial abusers, pedophiles, womanizers, drug smugglers, tax cheaters or general get-somethin-for-nuthin types. Nor are we all deadbeats, addicts, vagrants and underearners. Most of the time we start out just wanting to play. Not knowing where the train is actually going, we chose to follow the energy and inspiration to wherever it may lead. But when an artist gets a little traction and starts working with investors (and that’ll be most of the artists you’ve heard of, barring almost none), oftentimes the investor will only stay happy if the artist continually generates energy around themselves, in order to generate attention for the music and get the numbers up so that the investor can profit. It’s not just a label or what have you, but it’s all the members of the artist’s team whose livelihood (and future) depends on those same numbers. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle: artist “just wants to make music”, gets some help in the form of a band, production team, label etcetera. Then the pressure starts to multiply. Every person added to the team is a new set of mouths to feed and before you know it, the artist has to become a factory of attention-getting tactics. Only some of which are related to creating excellent and satisfying music. They have to meet those numbers or the show falls apart. It’s an obligation entirely separate from the creative process. Folks wonder “where everything went wrong” but it’s part of the design. Basically, the music business will turn you into a pirate, and if you don’t want that to happen then you’re probably better off digging into what you’re really after and why. And if what you want is quote-unquote “real music” then keep listening because today we’re talking to a live one.(Which is good, because I’m about talked out here. )The point is Music is literally the most important thing for us here at the show. You just have to take the music seriously and not take yourself too seriously. The folks on here tend to really bring it.[Photo by Michael Weintrob]So. Aaron Whitby:is an award-winning record producer, composer/songwriter, pianist, engineer and educator born and raised in London, England and a longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York.Whitby is best known for his work with longtime collaborator Martha Redbone, who we heard from last week. Whitby and Redbone are recipients of many awards and are currently developing a musical commissioned by the Public Theater in NYC.[Photo by Molly Magnusson]Mentored by Ohio Player/Funkadelic Walter ‘Junie’ Morrison, Whitby has recorded with; Natalie Cole, George Clinton, Randy Brecker, Lisa Fischer, Tony Trischka, John McEuen, Raul Midon, Neil Sedaka and Rodney Holmes among many others. He has performed with Nona Hendryx, Brian Jackson, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Ben Sollee, Mino Cinelu and Brooklyn Raga Massive among many others. He and Martha have been stacking up awards and commissions. That’s ongoing. But with Cousin From Another Planet, his debut album as a frontman, Whitby comes full circle to his jazz and funk roots pulling together an amazing cast of friends to realize his musical vision, as described by Greg Tate, “a funk-da-fied jam session feel undergirding tight, knotty jazz-smart progressions”. With tunes inspired by the animated energy and profound innocence of his young son, humorous lyrics that celebrate empathy and empowerment and musicians given the freedom to take the music wherever it feels good. According to Tate, this album is “one of this era’s hardiest re-dedications and festival-tent revival of soulful and exploratory jam-gnocity.” Cousin From Another Planet live onstage is a music and visual experience accompanied by a video artshow by VJ Lady Firefly (who has also worked with Dave Chappelle and The Roots) to capture the colorful, cartoonish and movement-inspired worldview.Like I said, we got a live one here. On this week’s Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, gets back to the campaign trail for another conversation with Kentucky candidates! This week we do some porch sittin’ with Hank Linderman, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress from Kentucky’s 2nd District in west central Kentucky (including Bullitt Co., Owensboro, Elizabethtown, Danville, and Bowling Green). Hank is now from Grayson County, but he grew up here in Louisville in the 1970s and has had a stellar music career. Kentucky’s 2nd district has not seen an incumbent defeated since 1884, but Hank is running to unseat Republican Brett Guthrie. Along with Linderman and Guthrie, you'll see on the November 3rd ballot Libertarian Robert Lee Perry, Populist Lewis Carter, and the Unaffiliated write-in candidate Poet Tribble. Learn more about Hank's campaign at http://hank4ky.com. As always, we remind you that although Forward Radio does not endorse any particular candidates, we DO endorse an informed electorate and we offer equal airtime to all registered candidates running for a particular seat. The deadline to register for the November 3rd general election is October 5th, so go to http://govoteky.com to get registered and ready for the election. As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Today on the show, I hang with an artist that I have been working with for several months. Scott T. Smith is young, talented musician from Hurricane, WV. Even though we've gotten close over the last few months, I still learned a lot from this hang. He wound up in Louisville through a chance meting with one of Louisville's premier musicians, Ben Sollee. Since Scott has been in Louisville, he has made many connections and has played several gigs, both public and private. We sat down after a rehearsal for a wedding we were going to play and he was hired for that wedding when the bride saw him singing in a park. Yes, Scott is that good. Scott is a talented singer, songwriter & performer and he has a very bright future. Ben Sollee is the real deal. Humble, talented, down to earth, but with the chops to make it and the creativity to set himself apart. He chats with Lori Mangum on this special episode of the #502LeaderSeries.
On the cover of Ben Sollee's new album Kentucky Native, an astronaut with a pick axe on his shoulder looks at Earth from the surface of the moon, contemplating loneliness and the fragility of life. He's the subject of the song “Moon Miner” on the artist's thirteenth recording, one that does some mining of its own - of the Kentucky bluegrass tradition and of his state's complicated economic and environmental evolution. In more than a decade of a multi-faceted career, Sollee has never settled into a predictable pattern of recording and performing. His ensembles shift. He takes on conceptual projects between studio sessions, such as scoring a ballet or touring entirely by recumbent bicycle. His profile rose as a member of the globe-touring Sparrow Quartet with Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn and Casey Driessen. At Fleck's suggestion, Sollee developed a prolific solo voice. Yet he nearly always performs with his high school jazz band friend Jordin Ellis, one of the best drummers around. His classical training and his folk muse are in constant dialogue, so his music is always surprising. One thing he's never done before now is dive explicitly into the bluegrass tradition that was at least nominally born in his home state of Kentucky. Unsurprisingly, his interpretation sounds like nothing else that's come before it.
Ben Sollee is a cellist from Kentucky with a special gift for translating his instrument into a rock style like Ben Folds or Andrew Bird. He performed in the WBEZ studios in the most recent season of our High Fidelity Music Series. This is his single, "Unfinished."
