A husband-and-wife Americana duo, Carolina Story create powerfully atmospheric songs with the combination of their heartfelt stories of love and struggle and the honesty and passion of their vocals.Featuring Ben and Emily Roberts, Carolina Story was formed in 2009, two years after they first met. Ben hailed from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and formed his first band when he was in junior high, playing guitar and writing songs. He spent a year playing football while studying at a college in Boston, but he left Beantown to relocate to North Carolina before enrolling at Visible Music College in Memphis, Tennessee. Ben met fellow student Emily on campus; originally from Lennox, South Dakota, she came to Memphis both to study and pursue her career as a performer and songwriter. As the two got to know one another, they discovered they were compatible both as a couple and as musical collaborators, and while Emily was jokingly proposing baby names, she coined Carolina Story, which Ben felt would be an even better name for their group. The latest full-length Album, Colors of My Mind took shape from a period of tremendous pain and metamorphosis, one which made this album an inspiring piece of art, and one of the year's most powerful albums so far.

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
You get a degree and then a job, right? That's how it is supposed to work. But in wildlife biology, ecology, and conservation careers, it's not so straightforward. In the wildlife science realm, you need experience, but the crazy thing is, that in our field, a lot of experiences are unpaid. Even though they are full jobs, quite often they don't pay.To be honest, it is extremely hard to get into this field without any volunteering. There are very few programs that will give someone with no experience a paid work opportunity. On top of that, once you graduate, most jobs are temporary, low-paying, and seasonal. Even if you do find a job, you might be trying to piece together these positions, and often across different areas of the country (moving is expensive). Unfortunately, finances are something you need to think about before you enter this career. Therefore, I thought it was a great idea to invite my friend Dr. Emily Roberts of Personal Finance for Ph.D.s for a dual interview for both of our podcasts. Emily's mission is to inspire and empower early-career Ph.D.s to make the most of their money. She engages with graduate students and postdocs through her Personal Finance for PhDs seminars, coaching, and websites. In this episode, we talk about all of the financial realities of going into a career in wildlife science.Specifically we discuss:What are pay-to-play jobs and experiencesWhy you will probably need to volunteer before you get a paying jobWhat should you expect financially in a career in wildlife biologyHow you can better prepare yourself financiallyAlternatives to careers in wildlife biology that can still satisfy your need to help wildlife/conservationand MORE!For full show notes click here.Get a free chapter of my book “Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know” to see how I can help you in your career: https://stephanieschuttler.com/getting-a-job-in-wildlife-biology-book/ Want to learn about cool animals, conservation, and get tips about careers in wildlife biology, science, and more? What do taxes, money management, investing, student loans, and more mean, while you're going through a PhD program? This week we will be joined by Dr Emily Roberts. Emily earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Duke in 2014. After realizing that her peers had a great need for financial education and support that was not being met by the universities or financial services industry, Emily started her business, Personal Finance for PhDs, shortly after defending. Through Personal Finance for PhDs, Emily gives webinars for universities, hosts a podcast, coaches individuals and small groups, creates courses and workshops for individuals, and runs a community. Emily encourages you to join her mailing list. If you do so through this link, and you'll receive a PDF that details five ways you can improve your finances today as a graduate student or postdoc. To learn more, follow Emily on Twitter (@PFforPhDs) and check out the Personal Finance for PhDs website. A full-text transcript of this episode is available via google doc. Join us each Saturday at 3 pm EDT/12 pm PDT to talk about maintaining mental health and balance in grad school. Want to be a guest or know somebody we should be talking to? Fill out our google form!
