Adam Flaherty and Marc Checket are two dads from suburban New England. And while they might think they're pretty funny and cool, the world clearly does NOT need another white dude ramble-cast. That's why Modern Dadhood explores what it really means to be a "dad" through candid, authentic, and often hilarious conversations with diverse dads of all walks of life… including famous dads, NOT famous dads, dads-to-be, step dads, grand dads, trans dads, and more.By celebrating present, engaged parenting and commiserating over common fatherhood challenges, listeners will gain new perspectives and feel empowered to become more present and mindful fathers, raising the next generation of kick-ass, world changing kids. The show features relatable anecdotes from the hosts' own lives, recurring segments like Instant Regrets, Confessions, and Did I Just Say that Out Loud? and plenty of thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ridiculous.Expect a healthy dose of laughter, sincerity, vulnerability, and 90s nostalgia in each biweekly episode. #moderndadhood #fatherhood #parenthood #parenting #parentingpodcast #dadding #dadpodcast
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are more than buzzwords—they're at the heart of today's cultural and political conversations. In a time when these topics spark both progress and polarization, it's a conversation well worth elevating, especially for parents striving to shape the next generation. For parents who feel uncertainty around how to instill these values in your children, we've got your back. In this Rewind episode, Jermaine Moore, founder of the Mars Hill Group—a training, development, and consulting firm specializing in leadership and DEI—joins us. As a father of four, Jermaine brings not just professional expertise but also personal experience to the table. He's been on our screens making us laugh for years, most recently in Colin From Accounts, but in this chat Patrick Brammall unpacks one of his more meaty roles to date… Being a first time dad! Patty's path to parenthood is a little unique with him and his wife Harriet Dyer adopting a baby girl in 2021 (Harriet is also co-creator/co-star of Colin From Accounts). Patty talks us through this experience, how it's fundamentally changed him, his perspectives and priorities. And given his daughter was just 2 and a half when we recorded this, Patty is the first to admit that he really is still trying to figure this dadding thing out!! Patty is so honest about the ups and the downs, his hopes and fears, the sleep deprivation and the toll it's taking on his face, and how he is still coming to terms with the fact that his time will never be his own again (well, not for the next 15 years or so). Patty, like all of us, is attempting this parenting Rubik's cube on the fly, and sometimes it's working, and sometimes it's not!! And if that wasn't enough, we have a brief musical interlude from a neighbour. This episode has got it all! Huge thanks to Patty (and Harriet) for sharing this really personal story, and for carving time out of a pretty jammed schedule to chat with us. In Australia Seasons 1 and 2 of Colin From Accounts is on Binge - and it's really really great. If you have not seen it you really should watch it, like tonight. As a prolific co-creator of Australian comedy classics like Upper Middle Bogan, Wayne is probably more comfortable bringing to life hilarious, and hilariously flawed characters, rather than reflecting on his own life. But we know Wayne to be so thoroughly kind, thoughtful and wise that we really put the screws on him to come and have a chat. Thankfully he agreed! (mostly due to a nudge from his wonderful partner in life and work, Robyn Butler) Wayne talks beautifully about becoming a stepdad, his initial fears of having another child and the transformative effect that working on some of your own issues can have on your parenting. Wayne also shares some stuff from his childhood involving domestic violence perpetrated by his father, and the huge ripple effect it has had on his life. It's pretty heavy stuff, but Wayne manages to explain it with such amazing insightfulness and honesty, reflecting on how he continues to work through its enduring impact to this day. We are so thankful to Wayne for sharing this part of his story, as it's not something he has ever talked about publicly. But just like Wayne himself, this chat is so much more than that, and Wayne's wisdom as a father and partner means that every single person will take something away from this really profound chat. The chilling statistics… Unfortunately the violence that Wayne talks about is not a rare thing and the horrors of male violence and domestic abuse are incredibly far reaching, taking a huge toll on our community. In Australia, a staggering 1 in 4 women have experienced physical or sexual violence, or both, perpetrated by a partner (Source). The generational impacts on children involved are massive, and for the victims the outcomes are tragic. In 2023 almost 50% of all women killed in Australia were murdered by their current or former partner (source). If you know somebody that is suffering from domestic violence and needs help, 1800Respect.org.au is a good place to start. — 1800RESPECT is the national domestic, family, and sexual violence counselling, information and support service. Our AFK journey has concluded. Garrett and Kyle return from two weeks of touching grass, or more likely sandy beaches. Kyle has been completely Dadding off the grid, while Garrett in classic fashion stayed in tune with on goings. Speaking of ongoings, we got the official War Within Cinematic Trailer? In July 2021, Dateline NBC reporter and Today Show personality Craig Melvin joined us to talk fatherhood. He shared candidly about the process of writing his book Pops: Learning To Be A Son And A Father, including stepping out of his comfort zone to conduct a number of interviews with his own dad. Craig reflected on his childhood, his relationship with his father, and how the men in his life have shaped the dad that Craig is to his own kids. Listen to the end of the episode for a round of dad Confessions. In this Rewind episode, the guys welcome NBC anchor/personality Craig Melvin's new book Pops: Learning To Be A Son And A Father, a book he began working on during a 2020 quarantine. Interview with Ryan Carters / Pro Cricketeer, Dad CoachHOSTED BY PAUL SULLIVANAt 18, Ryan Carters was a professional cricket player in Australia. He was a father in his early 20s. In his late 20s, after graduating from Harvard, he became a consultant for McKinsey, one of the top management consulting firms in the world. Good life. What didn't fit, though, was how fathers were expected to work and interact with their family. It drove him to start DadFIt, an organization that aims to turn fatherhood into a team support and give dads the support mothers give each other. My former Savoy neighbor and fellow grocery shopper, camp dropper-offer, fast casual dining consumer and YMCA member talk about how and why his family planted roots in Champaign. Jon explains why he never thought he'd add a decade-long line item of “Stay-at-home dad” to his resume. Listen as these fellow play daters and lunch makers talk about Jon filling this typically female for the good of the family, keeping his doctor wife in the loop and still deferring to her for parenting decisions, the awkwardness of navigating a majority female playscape and what the next years look like as his three children grow. Jon shows his true and wholehearted love for his wife and children in this unique perspective from a stay-at-home dad.I'd like to thank this episode's sponsor, Pixels by Emily. Super-Coach and new dad, Pete Shepherd is back and not surprisingly, we talk about parenting (what the f**k would I know?), sleep deprivation, the unexpected health benefits of being a parent (for Pete), the parenting equation for letting kids solve problems and experiencing (some) adversity vs. protecting them from the 'big nasty' world, dreading Monday mornings (work), upgrading our brain, the importance of new and diverse experiences, the futility of people-pleasing and trying to keep everyone happy, when things in our life (job, relationships, habits, etc.) have reached their 'use-by' date, the importance of curiosity and lots more. Laird shared his experience as a parent and how it has affected his relationships. We discussed the challenges of parenting and the constant trial and error that comes with it. In the first years for Laird, it is all about the importance of "keeping children alive and safe, especially as they become more mobile". (But hey that's the Physical Therapist in him speaking) We also talked about our own relationship and how it has changed since becoming parents. We reflected on the need to adapt and switch gears from being parents to being a couple together again! Taking time away from the kids to reconnect and spend quality time together is sometimes needed! I hope you like this personal episode. [This is part 2 of a 2 part conversation] In "The Lonely Dad Conversations," comedian Chris Gethard interviews a dozen dads to explore commonalities between their fatherhood journeys. What he finds, is that, plain and simple, when we become dads, we turn pretty lame. That's not to say that becoming a parent isn't an amazing, powerful, and positive life change, but think about it... are you as cool as you used to be before you had kids? Me neither. Chris joins us to laugh, ponder, and dissect some of the recurring themes in "The Lonely Dad Conversations."In Episode 84 of Modern Dadhood, the guys quickly recap Easter and Adam asks Marc to kindly share some compliments about his wife, before returning to Part 2 of their conversation with Chris Gethard. Chris is promoting his new book on Scribd called "The Lonely Dad Conversations," and the guys ask him about some of the recurring themes that pop up in the book, including:• How dads are like "backseat passengers"• How the baby boomer generation are different dads than we are• The role of your social life when you become a dad• Our kids observing our screen time• And More! Before closing out the 'sode, Adam and Marc share a quick round of "Kisses and Disses" inspired by recent podcast reviews. Remember AOL Instant Messenger? ICQ? Friendster? Do you recall the excitement and curiosity of exploring these platforms and connecting with new people? The internet was new, and our parents were either learning it alongside us... or maybe not interested in it at all. Either way, for many of us, our parents were not closely monitoring our exploration of the internet, or even aware of the inherent risks. Our kids are growing up in a very (very) different world, and as parents, it's our job to ensure they develop a healthy and safe relationship with the technology which will only become a more prominent fixture in their lives as they grow. Father of three, Tom Adjemian, joins the conversation to discuss how his family is navigating this complicated journey. Don't skip out before our dad Confessions!Episode 82 of Modern Dadhood opens with the guys chatting about Marc's twin boys' birthday party which had been rescheduled due to a last minute illness. Marc shares some of the nice, funny, and sometimes downright eerie handwritten birthday cards his boys received. The guys introduce guest Tom Adjemian into the chat. With his famed restaurant Attica, Ben Shewry is a guy that has made an indelible mark on the culinary world through his creativity, dedication & undoubtedly some really deep thought. As a mate, Hamish has been lucky enough to see Ben apply this same thoughtful approach to his Dadding over the years, and in this episode he really does get some golden practical tips on opt-in-parenting from Ben. We just made up “opt-in-parenting”... not sure it's a thing? But maybe it could be? In this episode, Ben shares some of his tried and tested techniques for connecting with kids through enshrining one-on-one time. He discusses encountering feelings of frustration as a parent, and being ill-equipped to deal with some of the challenges of being a relatively young dad. And in one particularly insightful moment, he discusses the power of forgiveness for not only your kids… but also yourself. It's some deep stuff from Ben… but, it is also super practical and simple - and dare we say… delicious. Ben! What a guy! Show Note: This interview was recorded before The Bear came out, otherwise we would have asked Ben a bunch of questions about that as well. And Hame would have said “Yes chef!” the whole time As always - thanks again for all the emails that are coming in from dads, mums, grandparents and maybe-one-day parents. There is some heartfelt, funny and inspiring stuff being sent in - so from us, sincere appreciation for taking the time to get in touch. As founder of The Resilience Project, a program that reaches 500,000 kids around Australia every year, Hugh van Cuylenburg has been talking to parents for ages. However, he's the first to admit being a parent is a whole different story! In this episode, Hugh shares with Hame some bloody funny stories, but also some really raw reflections on Dadding. Hugh's honesty is one of a kind, and it led to a chat with Hame that we are sure will leave many listeners nodding in silent appreciation of a shared experience. There is also some much deserved praise of Bluey! Hugh began his career as a school teacher and quickly became focused on improving the wellbeing of his students, eventually leading him to start The Resilience Project. In the early days this was little more than him driving all over the country delivering his message of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness to whatever school would take him. But Hugh's unrivalled passion for his subject matter, matched with his highly personal approach to storytelling has now led to his talks selling out the Sydney Opera House. I guess what we are saying is… he's really good. He also co-hosts an excellent podcast called The Imperfects with his brother Josh and our good friend Ryan Shelton, which on the off chance you have not listened to, we highly recommend. It's great. They are great. Note: Apologies, we do not have photos of Jarrod and Nicko in the show notes. Further note: Extra big thanks for all the amazing emails we are getting from both mums and dads. We love ‘em - keep it coming - Sorry there have not been many replies yet! Get in touch at howotherdadsdad.com Cheers!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Proud Wiradjuri man, father of 4 and icon of Australian journalism, Stan Grant goes deep with Hame in this episode with his philosophies on Dadding. He shares brutal stories about the Australia that his father was forced to endure, and for which he was preparing Stan to live in. He describes the pain of a relationship ending and how protecting the children was central. And as a dad to now older children, he reminds Hame that this thing called parenting goes by so, so, so fast and to treasure it, because you don't get another shot! Stan Grant is a celebrated journalist, commentator and community elder. From advising on Australian strategic defence policy, to powerfully advocating for First Nations rights or his hosting duties on Q&A, Stan is constantly expanding the conversation. He's published more books that some of us have read, and he'll forget more stuff than Hamish will probably ever know. Basically he is super smart. But more than that, he is super passionate, and as you'll hear, his approach to Dadding is no exception - it's something he cares deeply about and we really appreciate his generosity in sharing some of his wisdom with us.
