You may have seen Martin around of late chatting to people about his brilliant new book - On Days Like These - so our Chris Wynn managed to wrangle an interview with a man who has had his heart both broken and buoyed in pretty equal measure by Sunderland AFC; talking about his love of the club, his time as a player under Cloughie, his many achievements in the game - and his failures as he sees them - as well as a fair few thoughts on his time in charge of his boyhood club! What's the crack?Where do we begin? A ridiculous number of trophies and cups across decades in the game as a player and a manager - how did Martin come to support the Lads, and how much did Charlie Hurley have to do with it all? What are his earliest and fondest memories of following the Lads, and when Sunderland were knocked out of the Cup in '64, who was in more pain? A young Martin O'Neill or a gutted Sunlun captain? His first memories of visiting Roker Park as a player for Nottingham Forest; Martin's relationship with the legendary Brian Clough; did they ever talk about their shared fondness for Sunderland? What was he like to play for when things weren't going so well? When writing his book, Martin tried to approach each era by examining how he thought at the time - so naturally has it resulted in changing his thoughts on any particular part of his life and career? Breaking into management; Martin talks about his belief that trying to prove yourself at a side lower down the pyramid - say in the National League for example - isn't always the best idea; His successes at Leicester, facing Peter Reid's Sunderland in the cup and getting closer to the job he'd always wanted; It's your time; The call for help from Niall Quinn, the discussions with the club and making the decision to sign - was that the right decision looking back? Did he make it with his head or his heart? His struggles with the Sunderland ownership over players, trying to earn enough brownie points to be able to sign lads who hadn't already retired and looking at the way the club was running behind the scenes and on the pitch; The moments of magic he experienced; though by his own admission things didn't work out the way he imagined they would, how did it feel to finally walk out as Sunderland manager, and what are his favourite memories of his time at the club? The next chapter; what does the future hold for Martin O'Neill now? All this and so much more! An absolute privilege and an absolute gent, enjoy! While you're here, we are again calling on #SAFC fans and our friends to help raise money for Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen, who are in need of our help so they can help the most vulnerable people on Wearside. Author Stuart Kane joins Gabbie and chats about the iconic former player Robin Friday. Robin Friday dreams of being a professional footballer: rejection, drugs, borstal, and a near-fatal industrial accident won't stop him. In early 1974, Reading's manager, Charlie Hurley, signs Friday. After three games, it is plain to see that he's a very special talent, but it's also clear to Charlie Hurley that he has an untameable spirit on his hands.....With Gabbie CabbieProduced/Edited by Chris BrowneFilmed recorded at SRBMedia studiosMore at www.srbmedia.co.ukSponsor www.imagecleaners.co.ukSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/srbmedia. Chris Wynn had the chance to catch up with another legend of our time supporting the Lads - Mr Gary Owers - from his garden in isolation (with some beautiful birdsong for added atmosphere) to talk us through his tremendous memories of the Denis Smith era and his incredible record of 320 appearances for the club in just 5 years...We discuss:Gary being signed by Lawrie McMenemy and coached by his son Chris as a youth player at the Charlie Hurley centre, and watching us slip into the third division; The arrival of Denis Smith and the amazing football roller-coaster that followed, featuring double promotions, multiple Wembley trips, and getting taken under the older lads wings;England youth call-ups, getting battered with planks in Poland, passport woes with Bobby Robson as well as witnessing that famous speech of Robson's on the plane journey home; That 1990 playoff derby against the mags, sticking the boot in where necessary, getting chased off the pitch and avoiding swinging fists at Sid James' when the lads won in the rain in one of the most electrifying matches in club history; His treasured memories of the lads he played alongside, their fantastic bond, the impact of players like Marco and Bracewell, the parties in Fino's, the coach rides to the match and the overall feeling of pride playing for the club; His memories of the fans; the huge away followings, adoration even in defeat, and the pure passion of the era..The times 'a changin' as the Denis Smith era ended, and his opinions (holds a few back) on the managers that followed, as well as his thoughts on just missing out on that Reid era;His career that followed his leaving the club, and his work in developing and protecting youth teams for grassroots/trying to stop the rampant poaching of talent by bigger clubs; This is absolutely packed with some brilliant memories, another wonderfully honest reflection on his career and how it compares to the modern era by a man who experienced more in a few years than most do in a lifetime in the game. This is the first show both recorded and aired from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Both Tanya O'Conner and Charlie Hurley have dedicated their lives to the betterment of humankind in a variety of ways including but not limited to education and the healing arts. Through their own self education, hard work and a desire to see the world become a better place fo all especially those who are less fortunate, Tanya and Charlie have taken on the monumental task of giving people a much needed opportunity to live better and feel better about themselves. It was an honor and privilege to have them both on this very special C44 Show. www.celtic-touch.com
We had the pleasure of sitting down in the studio with former Sunderland and ROI international midfielder Thomas Butler to talk about his interesting time as a player on Wearside... You can listen for free on Acast, iTunes, Spotify, & YouTube - get stuck in. What are we talking about?Coming up through the youth system in Ireland, and catching the attention of the legendary Pop Robson.Following his move to Wearside as an apprentice, Tommy tells some stories about his time in the youth team under coaches like Pop, Sbragia, and of course Reidy and Sacko.Quinny; As you'd expect, when the young lads needed support, the big man was on hand to help. The differences between the Charlie Hurley centre and the then brand new Academy of Light.Breaking into the first team under Reid; How did it feel to get that call. Especially as a sub for that 4-1 victory over Chelsea. The right bunch; Quinny, Bally, SKP, Makin and Buzzer to name a few... Just how good was that squad? And how did their work ethic rub off on the up and coming players?Getting the right players in, the importance of a good scouting network, listening to what the manager needs and wants, and Tommy's opinion on the fleecing of Sunderland by certain agents for the last decade. Tommy tells us the story of why and how he left, and how he now uses his own experiences to help the young players he works with in sports management. Just how big a challenge is league one, as someone who's been there and done it.So many stories here, too many to summarise adequately. An engaging, entertaining (often explicit and pretty relevant) but overall fascinating interview. Listen in! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The lads were joined once again by the wonderful Malcolm Bramley - the SAFC senior supporters secretary - to analyse this past week's games, discuss the areas that seem to be a great source of frustration for the fanbase currently, and listen to some stories about Malcolm's time at Sunderland in his youth. You can listen, for free as usual, on Acast, iTunes, Spotify, and of course YouTube! Get stuck in!What are we talking about?Drawgate; With Jack Ross coming under fire from some sections of the fanbase and social media lately, what do we think has been preventing us from getting the 3 points we need? Do we need a complete tactical overhaul, or are we just needing a few key players to step up?Performances; How have the Lads looked recently? Is Baldwin at risk of losing his place? Should Maguire start? Why do people hate George Honeyman? Is Watmore better utilised as an impact sub? More question marks within..Jack's Best XI; Do we think he knows who they are yet?A Chicken sandwich and a cigar; Malcolm tells us how things used to be done in the boardroom back in the day..A truly full Roker Park; Malcolm's treasured memories of his favourite games, moments, the great Charlie Hurley and Brian Clough, and why he's not a fan of looking down. All this and much more. This week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, concludes the two part programme from Kilbrittain, Castlehaven and Kenmare. In Kilbrittain we hear about the local volunteer Charlie Hurley who paid the ultimate price in the war of Independence. Despite being one of the main players, why is so little known about him. In Kenmare, hotelier and TV personality Frances Brennan tells John Greene that being ‘detained’, and not ‘arrested’, is the appropriate word to describe one of his memorable holiday experiences. And…. In Castlehaven we meet author Michael Keane who talks about his book ‘The three Earls of Castlehaven’ – the third Earl being the only leader to confront and defeat Cromwell. As a former agricultural economics lecturer at UCC, Michael also gives his views on post Brexit for the cattle and dairy industry. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix episode "Into The Ring" [6:58] Since this was at least the second time through the series for all of the Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. hosts we all wholeheartedly agreed that it just gets better with each viewing. And the more you look into it, like Keir has had a chance to, the more you get to take from it. The episode does stand out even more by not mainlining it and watching it all on its own. The viewer has the chance to watch it and absorb it all. Marvel continues to bat 1000 with the interconnectivity in Daredevil with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic and Television Universe as well as being such a great true representation of the Daredevil character and comics. The Flashbacks or "Time Jumps" as Keir calls them were very well executed. And the crew pontificates if Daredevil will continue the Flashbacks into the second season. The fight scenes were perhaps the most captivating hand to hand combat ever on the small screen and continues to amazing these very seasoned content viewers. And the hosts discuss who would win fights in the Marvel universe to include Daredevil, Black Widow, Agent Melinda May, Mockingbird, and Grat Ward. The Daredevil score by John Paesano is stunning as well. Breathe easy #sciencebabies - Email Andreas Kühn Hi, how is your marathon going? I started out slowly, so here are only what I thought about the Pilot episode. Daredevil Thots Episode 1: From first scene it portrays the serious tone of the series and child actors did a fine job. Murdoch, especially how he played without glasses was impressive. Since I haven't watched final True Blood series I was very happy to see Deborah Ann Woll again. When she was captured by the police I half expected her to cry blood instead of tears. For the first episode the mature rating nearly only stemmed from the graphic and carefully crafted fighting and violence, besides the little tease from Karen Page changing out of her wet shirt. Cinematography especially memorable were the lighting at Murdoch's loft and in the rainy hand-to-hand. Nice touch how they use sound what helps out Murdoch during action pieces or hearing Karen's heartbeat when he questions her. Foggy reminded me a bit of Charlie/Hurley mixed together. What was that Kreel vs. Murdoch poster in the gym about? Was that the stuff absorbing character in Agent's of Shield Season 2 beginning? Abound the villains I can't say much, besides Voldemort's secretary appears to me as quiet and not very threatening. But those can be the most dangerous.
