Golf course superintendents and sports field managers often dream of landing a great job as a grounds manager at a top school close to home. Tom Barry has been living that dream for over 12 years as the grounds manager at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Connecticut.Greens Farms Academy is a private PreK-12 school situated just off the Long Island Sound. Its 45-acre campus includes gardens, turf, athletic fields, and naturalized areas—all managed by Tom and his four-person crew. They maintain two artificial sports fields and four natural grass fields to support a busy athletic program. Managing artificial fields presents unique challenges, and Tom shared some of his experiences navigating them.A strong advocate of Biological Soil Management, Tom also teaches turf and horticulture at a local community college. On campus, he transforms the school grounds into a hands-on learning environment for students. With strict pesticide restrictions and limited resources, weed management remains one of his biggest challenges. This year marks Greens Farms Academy's centennial celebration. As our conversation wrapped up, we shifted from turf to tunes—Tom, an accomplished guitarist, just added a new guitar to his collection and plays whenever he can!Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

This international panel discussion explores the current state and future trajectory of the accounting profession. The distinguished panel includes influential leaders and innovators on the field such as Dianne Yetter, Sarah Dobek, Tom Barry and Jeff Seibert to share their diverse perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. The conversation goes through with an assessment of the profession's current shape. While the panelists acknowledge the existence of challenges, such as talent shortages and outdated perceptions, they also recognize the immense opportunities arising from technological advancements and evolving client needs. The discussion highlights the importance of embracing change, upskilling in areas like communication and strategic thinking, and positioning accountants as trusted business advisors. As the dialogue progresses, the guests share their visions for the future of accounting. Predictions range from the rise of accounting for virtual economies and cross-disciplinary education to the potential demise of the traditional partnership model and the globalization of services delivery. The panelists also emphasize the need to address persistent myths and raise financial literacy to foster a better understanding of the profession's true value.Key Takeaways:The accounting profession is in a state of flux, with a divide between those embracing change and those resistant to it. Firms unwilling to adapt risk becoming irrelevant.Accountants must go beyond traditional number-crunching roles and develop skills in communication, strategic thinking, and entrepreneurship.Technology, such as AI and automation, will eliminate tedious tasks, allowing accountants to focus on delivering value-added advisory services.Attracting and retaining talent is a significant challenge, and firms must invest in training and development, particularly in soft skills.Branding and storytelling are crucial for changing the perception of accounting as a boring profession and showcasing its dynamic nature.Quotes:"We have to tell a better story. What made Anderson great is the way that they onboarded people, the way that they ingrained them into what was great about the profession." - Sarah Dobek"It's the best of times and the worst of times for accounting." - Tom Barry (paraphrasing Charles Dickens)Watch in video format on youtube here: https://youtu.be/SuOqR21SLB4◣━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━◢The Accounting Influencers Podcast, hosted by Rob Brown, is one of the world's leading shows for accounting leaders, professionals, finance specialists, software vendors, tech providers and influencers. Could our reliance on artificial intelligence be numbing our innate human touch? Join myself and John Andersen as we dissect the delicate dance between emotional intelligence and AI in today's business world. In a landscape where numbers and algorithms reign supreme, we take a step back to appreciate the unquantifiable value of intuition and gut feeling that fuels true visionary leadership. We chew over the enigma of balancing technology with the human element, using Amazon as a shining example of innovation propelled by a deep understanding of customer needs—a reminder that despite our love for data, emotional intelligence is the real MVP in deciphering the human experience behind the numbers.Imagine a classroom where AI avatars breathe life into education, but where do human connection and emotional intelligence fit into this futuristic picture? Our journey continues with the potential of these revolutionary teaching aids, yet we can't help but circle back to the essence of personal interactions and the emotions AI cannot yet mimic. I share an intimate tale contrasting Disney's crafted magic with the raw splendor of a natural sunrise, driving home the power and necessity of authentic human emotion. It's a candid conversation that urges us to question whether we're becoming too entangled in data to appreciate the very essence of what makes us human. We're not just here to speculate; we're here to understand the seismic shifts in industries like customer service and software development, where AI and data analytics are drawing new battle lines. We ponder the subjective nature of value and the challenges of adapting to rapid technological changes with insights from Tom Barry, who brings his first-hand experience with Comanche dealers into the mix. Our discourse spans from the historical echoes of the Industrial Revolution to the cutting edge of neuroscience, all while emphasizing that no matter how advanced our tools become, human effort and service remain irreplaceable. While scouring the Sonoran Desert for objects left behind by migrants crossing into the United States, anthropologist Jason De León happened upon something he didn't expect to get left behind: a human arm, stripped of flesh. This macabre discovery sent him reeling, needing to know what exactly happened to the body, and how many migrants die that way in the wilderness. In researching border-crosser deaths in the Arizona desert, he noticed something surprising. Sometime in the late-1990s, the number of migrant deaths shot up dramatically and have stayed high since. Jason traced this increase to a Border Patrol policy still in effect, called “Prevention Through Deterrence.” First aired in 2018 and over three episodes, Radiolab investigates this policy, its surprising origins, and the people whose lives were changed forever because of it. Part 3: What Remains The third episode in our Border Trilogy follows anthropologist Jason De León after he makes a grisly discovery in Arivaca, Arizona. In the middle of carrying out his pig experiments with his students, Jason finds the body of a 30-year-old female migrant. With the help of the medical examiner and some local humanitarian groups, Jason discovers her identity. Her name was Maricela. Jason then connects with her family, including her brother-in-law, who survived his own harrowing journey through Central America and the Arizona desert. With the human cost of Prevention Through Deterrence weighing on our minds, we try to parse what drives migrants like Maricela to cross through such deadly terrain, and what, if anything, could deter them. Special thanks to Carlo Albán, Sandra Lopez-Monsalve, Chava Gourarie, Lynn M. Morgan, Mike Wells and Tom Barry.CORRECTION: An earlier version of this episode, when it originally aired, incorrectly stated that a person's gender can be identified from bone remains. What was it like walking into Westside all those years ago? How did he turn an internship into a career? How can it pay to be the dumbest person in the room? What are the soft skills you need to succeed in the hard world of Westside? We answer these questions and more in the latest episode of Win Win, available now! Hosted on Acast. On this episode of the Irish History Show we discussed the Kilmichael Ambush. The Kilmichael Ambush occurred on the 28th of November 1920 when a flying column of the IRA, led by Tom Barry, ambushed a company of the Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary. The Auxiliaries lost 17 members in the engagement, including one who had escaped and was subsequently captured and killed. We also looked at the career of Tom Barry. Hi service with the British Army in the First World War, his actions in the War of Independence and Civil War and his recently released Military Service Pension application. We also looked at the controversies surrounding Kilmichael and the disputes regarding Barry's claim of a false surrender by the Auxiliaries which led Barry not to take prisoners during the engagement. Intro / Outro music “Sliabh” from Aislinn. Licensed under creative commons from the free music archive.
Two men are claimed to have been shot during the false surrender, not 3 as given here. The Kilmichael Ambush stands as one of the most famous actions of the War of Independence but remains shrouded in mystery. An audacious operation which boosted Republican morale and shocked the British government, debate continues over the false surrender alleged by Tom Barry and suggestions he had prisoners executed in cold blood. While the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, it continues to cause controversy 100 years on. Deployed alongside the Black and Tans and sent to make Ireland “an appropriate hell for those whose trade is agitation”, poor conditions and a lack of a clear objective would lead the Auxiliaries on a war path of drunkenness, destruction and murder. Though consisting of just 2,100 men they would be the IRA's main opponent for the duration of the War of Independence and would take part, as victors and losers, in many of the most famous ambushes in the revolution. The Auxiliaries continue to cast a dark shadow over Irish history and in the places they would serve afterwards, from Bandon to Hebron. This episode also looks at the Essex Regiment whose members would fight a personal war with the West Cork Flying Column under the command of Tom Barry. On 28th November 1920, members of an IRA Flying Column led by Tom Barry ambushed members of the Auxiliaries at Kilmichael in West Cork in which sixteen Crown forces were killed. Two IRA members also died. The event was politically and militarily significant and marked a turning point in the fight for freedom.A West Cork Flying Column member, Dan Donovan, recalls the event, and on location at the site of the ambush, local man Donal McSweeney and historian and author, Meda Ryan, describe the events of that fateful day. Lena Walsh, daughter of Patrick O'Brien of Kilbrittain whose entire family were members of the IRA and Cuman na mBan,describes the harassment of the people of West Cork by the Black and Tans prior to the ambush at Kilmichael.
Why was it that Cork (county and city), which accounted for c. 10% of the country's population, produced nearly 25% of those killed in the War of Independence? What role did its substantial (c. 10%) non-Catholic (mainly loyalist) population play? Did individual IRA commanders like Tom Barry make a difference and what was the significance of the engagements he led at Kilmichael and Crossbarry? Listen to Tommy Graham, editor of History Ireland, discuss these and related questions with Andy Bielenberg, Eve Morrison, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc and Gerry White. Border Trilogy While scouring the Sonoran Desert for objects left behind by migrants crossing into the United States, anthropologist Jason De León happened upon something he didn't expect to get left behind: a human arm, stripped of flesh. Jason traced this increase to a Border Patrol policy still in effect, called “Prevention Through Deterrence.” Over three episodes, Radiolab will investigate this policy, its surprising origins, and the people whose lives were changed forever because of it. This episode was reported by Latif Nasser and Tracie Hunte and was produced by Matt Kielty and Tracie Hunte. Special thanks to Carlo Albán, Sandra Lopez-Monsalve, Chava Gourarie, Lynn M. Morgan, Mike Wells and Tom Barry. Jason de Leon's latest work is a global participatory art project called Hostile Terrain 94, which will be exhibited at over 70 different locations around the world in 2020. Read more about it here. Someone like Tom Barry is rare indeed, as he is probably one of only a few third-generation qualified winemakers in Australia. His grandfather Jim Brazill Barry was an early winemaking graduate of Roseworthy college in 1944, the first agricultural college in Australia, and the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley. Tom's father Peter James also studied at Roseworthy, and Tom himself recently completed the course at the Waite campus of the University of Adelaide which Roseworthy merged with some years ago. Being based in the Clare Valley, one of the most important varieties for Jim Barry Wines and Clos Clare (which he and brother Sam took over a few years ago) is undoubtedly riesling. He joined me on this episode of The Vincast to talk about his background, the Clare Valley, and how important riesling is.
