We're bringing you an exclusive, unedited interview from our CityStories series, only on City+. We're going back to 1991 when a red card for goalkeeper Tony Coton meant striker Niall Quinn was forced to take his place. Up against Derby County who were on the brink of relegation, fan favourite Quinn had already scored an exquisite left-footed volley to give us the lead. However, Derby's Dean Saunders was soon through on goal before Coton was deemed to have brought him down. With our No.1 given his marching orders and no substitute goalkeeper, Quinn took Coton's shirt and gloves. The Ireland international's first duty between the sticks was to face up to the resulting penalty. Incredibly, he saved the shot at full stretch to turn it behind for a corner. It inspired us to a victory on the day and even went some way to earning Quinn the Player of the Year award for that season! We sat with Niall to look back at this incredible moment, his time at The Club and hear his goalkeeping experience before going between the sticks for City. Learn more about your ad choices. The Making of NO NEED TO ARGUE by The Cranberries - featuring Fergal Lawler and Stephen Street

Life of the Record

For the 30th anniversary of The Cranberries' second album, NO NEED TO ARGUE, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After forming in Limerick, Ireland in 1989, with a different lead singer named Niall Quinn, the band initially took on the name The Cranberry Saw Us. When Quinn decided to leave the band, he recommended Dolores O'Riordan as a potential replacement. O'Riordan wrote lyrics and added vocals to their demo tape and when the band heard what she brought to the songs, they immediately hired her. On the strength of their demo, they signed a contract with Island Records and began working on their debut album. At first, they started recording with a local engineer in Limerick, but couldn't capture the sound they were looking for. They had the idea of contacting one of their favorite producers, Stephen Street, who agreed to record their debut album. EVERYBODY ELSE ID DOING IT, SO WHY CAN'T WE? was released in 1993 and failed to make waves at first, but luckily took off when MTV started playing the video for “Linger.” When the album became a hit, the band toured relentlessly and worked on new material during soundchecks. They reunited with Stephen Street to begin recording songs for their second album. NO NEED TO ARGUE was eventually released in the fall of 1994. In this episode, Cranberries drummer Fergal Lawler describes how the band managed to get tighter as a unit during this period, while O'Riordan was gaining confidence as the frontwoman. Producer, Stephen Street, shares his memories of first working with them when they were nervous teenagers from a small town but how they were suddenly transformed by the attention the band had gotten worldwide. Street and Lawler describe the magic they were able to find working together in the studio and how Street managed to capture the band at their best. With O'Riordan's tragic passing in 2018, Lawler and Street reflect on her incredible talent and the legacy she left behind. From the delayed success of the first album to a shared love of The Smiths to a ski accident in the middle of recording to lyrics inspired by a turning point in Dolores's personal life to a dispute over production credits to embracing a grunge sound for “Zombie,” we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

You may have seen Martin around of late chatting to people about his brilliant new book - On Days Like These - so our Chris Wynn managed to wrangle an interview with a man who has had his heart both broken and buoyed in pretty equal measure by Sunderland AFC; talking about his love of the club, his time as a player under Cloughie, his many achievements in the game - and his failures as he sees them - as well as a fair few thoughts on his time in charge of his boyhood club! What's the crack?Where do we begin? A ridiculous number of trophies and cups across decades in the game as a player and a manager - how did Martin come to support the Lads, and how much did Charlie Hurley have to do with it all? What are his earliest and fondest memories of following the Lads, and when Sunderland were knocked out of the Cup in '64, who was in more pain? A young Martin O'Neill or a gutted Sunlun captain? His first memories of visiting Roker Park as a player for Nottingham Forest; Martin's relationship with the legendary Brian Clough; did they ever talk about their shared fondness for Sunderland? What was he like to play for when things weren't going so well? When writing his book, Martin tried to approach each era by examining how he thought at the time - so naturally has it resulted in changing his thoughts on any particular part of his life and career? Breaking into management; Martin talks about his belief that trying to prove yourself at a side lower down the pyramid - say in the National League for example - isn't always the best idea; His successes at Leicester, facing Peter Reid's Sunderland in the cup and getting closer to the job he'd always wanted; It's your time; The call for help from Niall Quinn, the discussions with the club and making the decision to sign - was that the right decision looking back? Did he make it with his head or his heart? His struggles with the Sunderland ownership over players, trying to earn enough brownie points to be able to sign lads who hadn't already retired and looking at the way the club was running behind the scenes and on the pitch; The moments of magic he experienced; though by his own admission things didn't work out the way he imagined they would, how did it feel to finally walk out as Sunderland manager, and what are his favourite memories of his time at the club? The next chapter; what does the future hold for Martin O'Neill now? All this and so much more! An absolute privilege and an absolute gent, enjoy! While you're here, we are again calling on #SAFC fans and our friends to help raise money for Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen, who are in need of our help so they can help the most vulnerable people on Wearside. If you can donate to or even share the appeal, it would mean a great deal to many people. Gav, Phil and Martin got together earlier to react to yesterday's return to winning ways for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, as a Dennis Cirkin header took all three points from Wigan Athletic! What's the crack? It's nice to win again isn't it; so how do the lads feel? A bit of a rough start as Wigan took to breaking up play, hitting long balls and time wasting - were we worried going into the second half after that strangely inevitable Wyke goal against the run of play; The referee and officials once again let themselves down as we were denied a great goal; are they plain daft or just horrifically incompetent? What a second half performance; after a change in personnel and a tweak to the formation the Lads absolutely tore up the pitch - would love to be a fly on the wall for those Mogga team talks. EMBOOOOOOOOOO; The breakthrough finally came - that the ref let us have anyway - when the ball dropped to Embleton in the box and he didn't disappoint! DENNIS F***IN CIRKIN; What a way to return from injury with a fantastic performance and a winning goal guest of honour Niall Quinn would've been proud of! PADDY ROBERTS; an inspirational performance from the lad! All this and more! Ha'way the lads! #SAFC #EFLChampionship #EFL Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

1.00" A shout out for AdvanceCT, Connecticut's version of Enterprise Ireland, where we'll be directing the Fantastic Five companies featured on Episode 103, helping them on their commercial journey through the USA. 3.30" Nicola Kearns, founder of Niks Tea, tells us about her journey from happy flight attendant to delighted tea entrepreneur, growing her ten-year old 'Irish' tea brand from a one person band to employing four and growing. She wants to sell more to more specialists shops, restaurants, hotels...and Kilkenny Design (which stocks only Irish made products - hat tip!). Typical of the true entrepreneur she already had done a lot of pirouettes on the day of the recording...as you do. But where did the idea of a tea business come from. It has something to do with tying up some legal bits and bobs in Spain. She explains how one setting up in the tea business does it...including 'faking it until you make it'. Her first order was valued at around €1,500 and she had sleepless nights wondering if it all was going to work. She gets great support from the Dublin Food Chain and she's about to join the 'Love Irish Food' Group. But who do Barry's Tea think about Nik's Tea?? To grow the business she bought a tea bagging machine, one of the few bagging in Ireland. She raised some loans via a company called Swoop. She has worked with the Aldi 'Grow with Aldi' programme thanks to that bagging machine. Who would she 'hire in a heartbeat'? Paddy McKillen Junior. 29.30" How do sneaky retailers get us to buy more? Well, who better to ask then Mark FitzPatrick, founder of Q-Fitz, who you could say, queues for a living. There's a huge amount of science behind making us spend a couple of Euros more, while we pay for our original purchase. His family used to own the Shopping Basket chain of retail stores. Mark swore he'd never work in retail. And, guess what, he works in retail. And loves it. He gives a surprise reason for why people buy chewing gum and gives a few insights into what he does and how and why it works. Clients they have include Circle K and they've just signed with Applegreen. DAA is another key client, along with the Aviva Stadium and the Guinness Storehouse. Because the company knows so much about queuing they have a separate division that sells queuing posts (the posts with retractable belts that we have to go around whilst queuing). The Big Plan, is to break into the UK, maybe via Applegreen. And maybe North America, where Circle K has 14,000 outlets. His 'hire in a hearbeat'? He'd hire his wife, Aga FitzPatrick. Find out why. 55.00" Branding. TeamGBS recommends the cheap and cheerful route to branding. That route involves two cheap bottles of wine, some friends and a room with a locked door. The door is only unlocked when there's unanimous agreement on a brand name. However, Gerard Tannam of Islandbridge, takes a considerably more scientific approach to his passion project, aka his work, which is branding. Gerrard spent ten years in Hong Kong as an Inspector of Police. He also won a School's Cup soccer medal and he explains that he put that up on LinkedIn to match those who post the same about their schools' rugby achievement. Niall Quinn was part of his team at Drimnagh Castle. He gives a list of 'do's and don'ts' - and he starts by asking 'what does a GREAT customer' for your business look like?He says that Ryanair is a great brand (he doesn't like them by the way!). He thinks the banks in Ireland are very poor indeed. And if you work for Arramark owned Avoca, you'd better listen good because our expert says your brand is bad.His 'hire in a heartbeat'. He gives a great answer. Hire a Ukrainian. Gerard explains why. All these great insights are thanks to our sponsor, De Facto Shaving Oil. www.DeFactoShave.com Hosted on Acast. After sitting uneasy through the first rest day yesterday we're into the exciting knockout stages with two of the big underdogs of the tournament in action. Having stunned the world in the group stages, Cameroon are in uncharted waters. They've got to get past a Colombia who despite under-performing have picked up many admirers for the unorthodox style of their players. We may well get another excuse to play that Roger Milla Pepe Kalle track. Meanwhile the part timers of Costa Rica come up against a pretty inconsistent  Czechoslovakia in a game badly affected by 15,000 missing Swedish fans and Costa Rica's injured goalkeeper. There's rumours on Jack Charlton's job, Niall Quinn stocking shelves in Superquinn and inspired by Costa Rica's theatrical movie on Italia 90, there's speculation on who would be cast for Irish featureSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/extratimecom)
