Welcome, Catholic Pilgrims. We have a short reading today. Mother is sitting on the steamer near Cadiz, Spain, which is on the western side of Gibraltar. Malaga is on the eastern side, so that means that the steamer passed through the Straits of Gibraltar. Mother Cabrini has a cold and she says she is curing it with milk. Tinned milk to be exact. I've never heard of that being a cure, but who knows. Let's go ahead and open to page 254 and begin.

When Donald Trump paused tariffs for 90 days after a week of chaos, once again the world tried to interpret his actions. When people tell you who they are believe them and Trump has told us plenty of times. These were not the actions of a man playing 4D chess but of an infant trying not to choke on the pieces. Trump is the idiot wind blowing through America bringing anarchy and misery across the world. On Free State today, Joe and Dion look at the man behind the actions and those who have decided to support him. They identify the grift in the middle of the pandemonium and wonder if the bully who wants the world to grovel will be undone by the chaos he can't control.Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/ Hosted on Acast. New to tinned fish? We got you covered. This was bound to happen. With our recently found love of tinned fish we had an expert join us to talk about the benefits of tinned fish and offer up some beer pairing suggestions. We know cans of sardines and oysters aren't for everyone. But these delicious fishes get a bit of a bad wrap, especially here in the States. Season Brand marketing manager Sara Kelly hung out with this to share some of the pros of tinned seafood, info on their offerings, and even throw out some beer pairing suggestions.Tinned fish is trendy now. I don't know how or why, but it is. TikTok influencers are throwing up videos of their favorite tins and recipes. It's crazy. BUT... sardines and other tinned fish do have a lot of benefits - not only are they convenient but they're packed with nutrients (get all those Omega-3s) and protein. Just watch that salt intake since they're usually pretty high on that as well.If you're not down with skarfing whole little fishies there are boneless and skinless sardines or you can opt for salmon, trout, oysters, mussels, calamari, and octopus. Go all Pokemon on the tins and catch them all.Don't worry, we've got some actual beer content as well!Anchor Brewing has been purchased! This is the big one this week. The founder of Chobani (yes, the yogurt folks) has purchased Anchor Brewing. It sounds like he intends to honor it's legacy in his plans. We're very hopeful and we'll keep an eye on progress here.Sam Adams sale rumors. Buzz around the internet this week said Sam Adams was in talks to sell to Suntory. Suntory said that's BS, Sam Adams said they don't comment on rumors. Is it possible this billion-dollar-brewery is up for grabs?Shout out to Native Brew Works. I recently visited the old stomping grounds of Arkansas and was pleased to find Native Brew Works in Jonesboro. They're in a dry county and, as beer laws go, they are required to sell food to serve beer. But they CAN sell beer... even though it's a dry county. I tried their Kolsch and Dunkel and both were very solid. And the queso was banging, too.Beers of the WeekSweetwater American LagerAnchor Steam beerFairhope Brewing Willie Mays Haze (Hazy IPA)Q Mixers - Ginger Beer (Dry June for Nate so he'll offer up some NA suggestions)Brasserie de Blaugies / Hill Farmstead La Vermontoise SaisonThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! With a recession just announced, it's important to get the most out of every dollar without compromising on the quality of your food. Here are some things you can do to stretch the weekly meal budget: Learn to cook! Adopt a waste not, want not attitude - never let anything go to waste. Grow your own food, especially herbs. Preserve or freeze! Sauces, fruit, chutneys, butter, milk, etc. Buy in season and buy on special. Buy off-supermarket - bulk foods, local fruiterers, clearance houses. Ingredients and food items that will save you money: Protein - beans, peas, meats (limit to 100g per person), chicken, etc. Tinned and frozen vegetables retains their quality well - corn, peas, tomatoes. Meatless meals will always be cheaper; potato & pea curry, tacos, eggs. Use lesser cuts and offal - chuck steak, kidneys, etc. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ABI brewers were close to a strike, but reached a deal to stop that happening. Just ignore this part of the show.Fishwife partners with Keystone LightThis was a collab we didn't expect. We're not mad at it, just a bit confused. Tinned seafood purveyor Fishwife has partnered with Keystone Light to launch The Smooth Snackle Pack. The combo gets you three tins of smoked trout, and insulate snackle box, and a coupon to get you some Keystone Light from Uber Eats. We'll get one (update: we did) but Fishwife is not to be very proud of their upscale image. Kind of a surprise to see them partner with Keystone Light.Dry February > Dry JanuaryNon-alcoholic beer continues to grow. Sales are still up through February showing some people are stretching out that Dry January. Whole Foods Market now sells more Athletic Brewing than any other brand.Beer laws are stupid everywhereNo matter what state you live in you're likely face some type of stupid beer laws. A bill to improve laws in Georgia (SB 163) failed to get out of committee this year. Leaving the state's brewers struggling with current regulations. We'll share how we navigate the world of canned delicacies, evaluating the texture, taste, and unexpected surprises (spines, anyone?) that await within each tin. Prepare for a rich narrative that weaves through the forgotten corners of early internet sensations, across the robust marketplaces carrying viral food trends, and into the realm of culinary pairings that will elevate your canned fish game to new heights. But we're not just about food; we're about the fabric of reality TV, the authenticity of its relationships, and the peculiarities of dating shows that have us both cringing and craving more. History of canned food and tinned food. Canning is a method of food preservation in which food is processed and sealed in an airtight container (jars like Mason jars, and steel and tin cans). Canning provides a shelf life that typically ranges from one to five years,[a] although under specific circumstances, it can be much longer. A freeze-dried canned product, such as canned dried lentils, could last as long as 30 years in an edible state. We had to wing it this week...Unfortunately, our guest had a last minute emergency this week and we'll have to reschedule Larry for another time. It's cool, we've got this. We can always talk about beer.Canned Fish and Beer Pairing? One of our latest obsessions is tinned seafood. Sounds like we're kind of late to the party here but at least we made it to the party. I've always enjoyed a nice kipper or some tuna salad but there's a whole world out there I had no idea about. Fish lovers have their own forums, inside jokes, and memes just like beer nerds. Weirdos. We offer up some pairing suggestions for those that want to explore this salty world with us. Grab yourself some deens (that's what the cool kids call sardines) and grab a brew. If you've got any favorites please let us know.Tilray Buys a Bunch of BreweriesThe big news in beer this week is Tilray's purchase of 8 brands from Anheuser Busch. There's plenty of debate on whether this is a smart or dumb move for Tilray. It seems they got a great price on the package, less than AB paid for just one of the breweries when they acquired them. The purchase of Sweetwater started Tilray (Aphria at the time) down the beer path and they acquired a few others since then. Here in Atlanta we've enjoyed Alpine and Green Flash brews on tap at the Sweetwater taproom. Maybe we'll see a cornucopia of these legacy brands there in the future.German beer sales down, Guinness has a record yearSounds like our German friends are easing up their drinking as sales are reported to be down 2.9% compared to last year. The country saw a bit of a boost once Covid restrictions lifted but that has gone away. In contrast to that, Guinness had it's best year ever with sales up 9% across all regions. Tinned fish first started trending in 2017 with cafes and restaurants in major cities adding them to the menu, then again in 2022 with “seacuterie” boards popping up on TikTok. Finally this year, the trend has made it to Las Vegas through Kris Wilson, Erica Bell, and Emily Baddock, founders of the Tinned Fish Club. The organizers have been partnering with local restaurants and introducing the European mainstay to the Las Vegas food chain. Kris and Erica tell co-host Dayvid Figler why tinned fish is growing in popularity, how they convince skeptics to give it a try, and the latest chef on the Strip to join the club. It isn't fit for humans now, There isn't grass to graze a cow. Swarm over, Death! Come, bombs and blow to smithereens Those air -conditioned, bright canteens, Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans, Tinned minds, tinned breath. Mess up the mess they call a town- A house for ninety-seven down And once a week a half a crown For twenty years. And get that man with double chin Who'll always cheat and always win, Who washes his repulsive skin In women's tears: And smash his desk of polished oak And smash his hands so used to stroke And stop his boring dirty joke And make him yell. But spare the bald young clerks who add The profits of the stinking cad; It's not their fault that they are mad, They've tasted Hell. It's not their fault they do not know The birdsong from the radio, It's not their fault they often go To Maidenhead And talk of sport and makes of cars In various bogus-Tudor bars And daren't look up and see the stars But belch instead. In labour-saving homes, with care Their wives frizz out peroxide hair And dry it in synthetic air And paint their nails. Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough To get it ready for the plough. The cabbages are coming now; The earth exhales. A Sony Music Entertainment production. Tinned fish is an exploration of geography, tradition, ocean bounty, sustainability, and artful design. Here are different ways to eat them at home and at restaurants. Critics review the latest film releases: “Asteroid City,” “No Hard Feelings,” “Nobody's Hero,” and “Desperate Souls, Dark City, and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy.” Huntington Beach is among the cities nationwide that are considering or outright banning books about racism and sexuality. How do the bans tie into our historic fear of reading? With new USDA approval, two California companies will be able to start selling their lab-grown chicken. It could mitigate environmental impacts, but will consumers buy it?

Gemini joins us from Chicago, sharing her impressions of the James Beard Award ceremony, and reveals what it was like to serve as a volunteer judge for the awards. Later in the show, it's Gemini with the big interview in the latest seafood trend. Call it a tin. Call it a can. Call it 'conserva.' It's how people have preserved food, especially seafood, for centuries. And now there's a tinned fish club in Las Vegas. Gemini sat down with its founders to get the details -- including how to pair, uh, fish with cheese. Chances are you've seen Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co's delightful boxes of smoked trout or Cantabrian anchovies grace your Instagram feed or even on the shelves of your local Whole Foods. By now, everyone from Food & Wine to Vogue has written about the sustainably sourced phenomenon, and the internet is well aware that hot girls eat tinned fish.
