Peggy Sue Wells: The Secrets of Rebuilding Life After Divorce

Stories of Hope in Hard Times

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2020 66:32

PeggySue Wells never expected to go through a divorce, but she shares the secrets of how she rebuilt her life and found peace through the process. PeggySue Wells: The Secrets of Rebuilding Life After DivorcePeggySue Wells is a mother of seven, has worked five years as a radio show host, is a history buff, and a tropical island votary. She parasails, skydives, snorkels, scuba dives, and has taken pilot training. She writes from the Hundred Acre Wood in Indiana and is the best selling author of 29 books including, " Chasing Sunrise (https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Sunrise-P-S-Wells/dp/1948888645) ." Facing DivorcePeggySue remembers the toll that her mother's two divorces took on her when she was young. Her grandmother, aunt, and uncle were also divorced. Almost everyone on her mother's side of the family had experienced a divorce. PeggySue was determined not to repeat the pattern. She was going to work so that she could live happily ever after. The problem was, it didn't work. When her youngest daughter was not quite two years old, the family sat down and PeggySue told her husband that this wasn't a good environment for her or their children. She didn't want her children to think that this was how men should treat women. She told him that either he had to stop being abusive or he needed to move out. He chose to leave. PeggySue was heartbroken because this was the one thing she was going to do right in her life. She didn't have a plan B. For PeggySue, the hardest part was feeling so betrayed by someone that she had given her whole heart to. She felt that she must not be valuable enough, because if she was he would have stayed and made the effort to make it work. PeggySue remembers that one of her daughters asked him once why he didn't try to date their mom again and win the marriage back. He told her that it was too hard. But after many times in court and mediation, PeggySue is sure that working it out would have been easier. The StigmaAfter her husband left, PeggySue went into crisis management mode. Her kids were embarrassed and didn't want to tell anyone. They didn't want to be considered a "broken home." PeggySue was sure he would come back within six months so she was ok with that. Looking back now, she wishes she had told someone, because they needed help. But there was also a stigma associated with divorce twenty years ago. If you couldn't keep your marriage together you were a bad wife, a bad mom, and you didn't have enough faith. You weren't a good Christian. When the news of their divorce finally broke, PeggySue says that there were people who dropped their friendship with her family immediately. She had to realize that those actions said a lot more about her "friends" than they said about PeggySue and her family. While things are different now and people are generally more accepting of divorce, PeggySue says that those who consider themselves churchgoers still face a stigma around divorce. We are holding on so tight to the ideal that we allow things to happen that shouldn't be allowed to happen until it escalates to a point where the situation is very toxic. How to Help a Friend Going Through DivorcePeggySue says that the best thing you can do if your friend is going through a divorce is to stay by them, no matter what. PeggySue has some friends who have stuck with her through everything. She has called them to cry, to tell them how she can't believe what is happening to her, and they have empathized and discussed everything with her with no judgment. Even if they are making a choice you don't agree with, that doesn't mean you reject them. Marriage is a ContractPeggySue says a difficult part of going through her divorce was that her church, and many like it, viewed divorce as an unforgivable sin. So PeggySue turned to her scriptures often, searching for answers from God. Through studying the Bible, she learned that marriage is a contract. When divorce happens, it's...

This week on the podcast, we are so stoked to have Julian DeSchutter join us on the podcast. Julian leads a movement known as Chasing Sunrise, which started out as a group of friends meeting up at 3am in parking lots so that they could hike mountains to catch the sunrise at the peak. As word of this movement spread in Vancouver, so did the number of people who wanted to get together in the early, early hours of the morning to seek this unique adventure. In this podcast, we sat down with Julian to talk about how this movement has evolved to have more kinds of adventures (driving to Mexico for tacos is one of them) and include more kinds of adventure-seekers. This was our longest podcast yet, so brew your favourite coffee and tea as we talked, laughed and got real about what's going on in our lives today.

For Chasing Sunrise co-founder, Julian DeSchutter, this trip was one way him and his friends brought adventure into their normal life.   Julian DeSchutter (@deshoots) is a builder of companies, charities, projects, cultures, communities, and an overall fascinating life. His passion intersects between building things people care about and telling stories about them.   One of these takes shape in the form of Chasing Sunrise. Chasing Sunrise is a company and community that understands life is about waking up every day and going after the things we truly want. It emphasizes living in a way that our 9-5 and 95 year-old self will appreciate.   With this message set deep within the company, Chasing Sunrise gets people together to go on awesome adventures. They create an environment that welcomes deep connections, conversations, and activities that spark life.    While many of the events currently take place near Vancouver, Chasing Sunrise recently ran trips to Everest Base Camp and Morocco. In February and March of this year, they are taking groups into Yukon Territory to see the Northern Lights.   Julian understands just how short life is and is constantly living in a way his 80-year old self would thank him for. This means pursuing ideas, putting them out into the world, being vulnerable and going on crazy adventures despite facing fear and discomfort.    Based on our conversation or his Instagram, it's easy to see his belief in forming deep connections, working together, and challenging yourself and others to do the work necessary to improve.     Find full episode show notes, description, and links at https://edgeofcomfort.com/eocp22/

Who is my guest for this episode? On episode I have the fortunate pleasure of sitting down with Ally Pintucci. Ally is one of the founders of When in Doubt Love and in this episode we dive into self-love. Why did I bring Ally onto the show? I brought Ally onto to the show because she is an incredibly beautiful human being who like all of us has had her ups and downs. Ally discusses how she was able to lose 70 pounds through a determined lifestyle change. She focused on eating better and incorporating a variety of workouts into her daily life. Though having a lot of success physically, mentally this took a toll on her. She talks about how the sudden drop in weight caused her to have body dysmorphia. Ally gets raw and shares her personal inner demons along with how she continues to cope with them. Ally has used her experiences to help with the creation of When In Doubt Love, whose goal is to make us all realize that love and doubt can co-exist. It's to remind us that we can't control necessarily how we feel - but we can choose how we react towards ourselves and others, and hopefully it's from a place of love. Dive into the episode to hear more. In this episode you will learn: how to respond positively to adverse feelingshow to identify why you don’t feel wellwhat is body dysmorphia and how Ally is dealing with itthe importance of being your #1 fanthe thing holding you back from loving othersthe first step to having a more loving relationshipwith yourself “You can’t give love, affection and supportto everyone else if you can’t love yourself.” - Ally Pintucci Contact Info Ally Pintucci – Facebook @allypintucci – Instagram When In Doubt Love –Facebook When In Doubt Love – Website @WhenInDoubtLove - Instagram Mentioned in the Podcast: Chasing SunriseTime Notes Ally’s definition of success @3:17How to identify why you don’t feel well @7:30What is body dysmorphia @12:37The importance of being your #1 fan @ 15:18The thing holding you back from loving others @17:25How to respond positively to adverse feelings @29:17There is no such things as diets, it’s how you live your life @34:14Set yourself up for success @42:23Ally’s involvement with Chasing Sunrise @43:04It’s not about quitting your life, but it is about being happy @47:59The first step to having a more loving relationship with yourself @52:12
