Marty and Holly speak with David Brin, science fiction icon, scientist, futurist and civilizational optimist. We discuss his particular view of first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence, as portrayed in his 2012 novel 'Existence', along with his predictions about how artificial intelligence and virtual reality will change our world in the near future. We discuss the UFO phenomenon (a sophisticated form of cat lasers for us to chase) and the unspeakably rude behaviour of these hypothetical silvery teaser punks. David speaks directly to the artificial intelligences and possibly alien intelligences who may be inveigled in our internet. We talk about Cixin Liu's 'The Three Body Problem' (there is no three body problem), the likely prevalence of life in the universe (90% of star systems), the Fermi Paradox, SETI, METI, and various forms that first contact with alien civilizations may take, among them Von Neumann machines and artificial alien intelligences stored in 'envoy eggs' orbiting our planet for millions of years. David tells us how to make the most powerful telescope in the universe, by turning the Kuiper Belt into a solar system sized lens. Finally, he implores us to fight back against the ingrate habit of cynicism and pessimism rotting our global civilization today, and declares "I'm proud as hell and nothing can stop us! ... Be citizens of wonder, help save a good civilization."David Brin's Webpage:https://www.davidbrin.com/'Existence' by David Brin:https://www.davidbrin.com/existence.htmlVideo Trailer for David Brin's 'Existence':https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANVT0hYbAfEDavid Brin's 'Colony High' Series:https://www.davidbrin.com/colonyhigh.htmlDavid Brin's 'Out of Time' Series:https://www.davidbrin.com/outoftime.htmlDavid Brin's Advice to New Writers:https://www.davidbrin.com/nonfiction/advice.htmlDavid Brin on UFO's:https://www.forbes.com/sites/calumchace/2023/01/25/why-are-ufos-still-blurry-a-conversation-with-david-brin/David Brin on Why METI is a Bad Idea:https://www.davidbrin.com/nonfiction/meti.htmlNASA Innovative Advanced Concepts:https://www.nasa.gov/stmd-the-nasa-innovative-advanced-concepts-niac/The B612 Foundation:https://b612foundation.org/An Invitation to Extraterrestrial Intelligence:https://ieti.org/Buzzsprout (podcast host):https://thescienceinthefiction.buzzsprout.comEmail: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/743522660965257/Twitter:https://twitter.com/MartyK5463
Daily Soap Opera Spoilers by Soap Dirt (GH, Y&R, B&B, and DOOL)
Click to Subscribe: https://bit.ly/Youtube-Subscribe-SoapDirt In a recent discussion about General Hospital, the popular ABC soap opera, fans expressed concerns over some questionable plot developments and character arcs. The conversation led by Soap Dirt's Belynda highlighted five problematic aspects of the current storyline. Among the issues discussed were Anna Devane's (Finola Hughes) questionable decision to let Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stewart) off the hook, despite his criminal activities. Another hot topic was the return of Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and his seemingly codependent relationship with Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright). Furthermore, fans expressed dissatisfaction with the new character Giovanni Palmieri's (Giovanni Mazza) purpose in the story and the character Natalia Rogers-Ramirez's (Eva Larue) outdated plotline. Lastly, concerns were raised about numerous unresolved plot threads, including the unresolved murder of Austin Holt (Roger Howarth) and the unexplained purchase of Windemere. The discussion calls for significant changes in the writing regime to rectify the ongoing issues and boost the show's flagging ratings. Novellas are the ace up your writerly sleeve! They enable you to practice all of the principles of storytelling in a shorter, more manageable form. That's going to make you a much better novelist because your story will be focused and you won't get lost in your manuscript. And oh, the best part? Novellas are on the rise. - V.*Script note: In the episode, I mention that Jenna Bush recommended two novellas in her March 2024 bookclub. That is incorrect. Never Giving Up on The Dream with Mystery Author Joshua Moehling On this episode of the Write it Scared podcast, I talk with Joshua Moehling, author of the Ben Packard mysteries and Lammy award nominee. Josh shares his journey, from his early childhood dreams of being Stephen King to facing reality and rejection from the publishing world to eventually succeeding in accomplishing his dream of becoming a published author. We talk about the importance of perseverance, finding internal motivation beyond external validation, and the role of community and encouragement in a writer's journey. Josh's experience offers valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of writing, underscoring the necessity of doing the work, despite setbacks, to achieve one's dreams. Josh is completely transparent about his journey through the query trenches and how perseverance landed him his agent. Listeners also get a glimpse into Josh's writing process, how he evolved from a pantser to a plotter when faced with publishing deadlines, and how he found no loss in creativity or serendipity because of that decision. So, be not afraid of the outline writers! He offers his perspective on the balance between creativity and discipline and how it's okay just to write it badly. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom and encouragement for writers at every stage in the writing game. It highlights the importance of sticking with it not for external validation but for the internal pride of knowing you did what you set out to do and the joy you get from the process. 00:00 The Heartbreak of Starting Over01:26 Special Guest: Joshua Moehling's Writing Journey08:16 The Challenges and Triumphs of Writing a Novel10:42 The Query Process and Breaking Into Publishing12:58 Crafting Mysteries and Thrillers: A Creative Process20:31 Balancing Writing with Life and Other Commitments26:06 The Importance of Community and Perseverance in Writing30:35 Looking Ahead: Future Projects and Where to Find Them32:32 Final Thoughts and Encouragement for Fellow WritersLearn more about Josh and his books at https://www.joshuamoehling.com/And make sure you follow him on InstagramSupport the Show.To become a supporter of the show, click here!To get in touch with Stacy: Email: Stacy@writeitscared.co https://www.writeitscared.co/ https://www.instagram.com/writeitscared/ Take advantage of these Free Resources From Write It Scared: Download Your Free Novel Planning and Drafting Quick Start Guide Download Your Free Guide to Remove Creative Blocks and Work Through Fears

When Catherine Miller became a mum to twins, she decided her hands weren't full enough so wrote a novel with every spare moment she managed to find. By the time the twins were two, Catherine had a two-book deal with Carina UK. There is a possibility she has aged remarkably in that time. Her debut novel, Waiting For You, came out in March 2016.Catherine was a NHS physiotherapist, but for health reasons (Uveitis and Sarcoidosis) she retired early from this career. As she loved her physiotherapy job, she decided if she couldn't do that she would pursue her writing dream. It took a few years and a couple of babies, but in 2015 she won the Katie Fforde bursary, was a finalist in the London Book Fair Write Stuff Competition and highly commended in Woman magazine's writing competition. Soon afterwards she signed with Carina. Soon after that, she collapsed in a heap and was eventually revived by chocolate.Since then she's become an internationally bestselling novelist and hasn't found a week that didn't require revival by chocolate. She is one eighth of The Romaniacs – a group of writing friends who've supported each other since meeting through The Romantic Novelists' Association's New Writers' Scheme. Her latest novel is THE DAY I LOST HER:As I stare at the girl, I feel my heart pound inside my chest. There she is, my daughter, right in front of me after all this time. I have to reach her, to hold her, before I lose her all over again…I have experienced what no mother should: I have lost my child. Many years ago, after my divorce, my daughter moved in with her father, and then went missing…For years, I searched everywhere for my darling girl, but she had vanished without a trace. But even on my darkest days, when my heart felt truly broken, I kept a hope alive inside – a hope that my little girl would, one day, find her way back to me.And now, standing in front of me, so close I could touch her, is a young woman who looks just like my beloved Tilly. I've been reminded of her so many times over the years, but this is different. The curve of her face, the sound of her voice…But just as my heart leaps with unimaginable joy, she disappears into the crowd and I lose sight of her. I can't believe she has gone before I had the chance to reach her.As I desperately scan the faces around me, my heart pounding in my chest, I realise I am certain that she was my little girl, back after all these years. But why would she seek me out now, just to vanish all over again? And how can I find her? Because no matter how much time has passed, she will always be my little girl… And I will do whatever it takes to hold her in my arms once more.An absolutely unputdownable and gripping story about one mother's quest to find her little girl. Fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will be hooked on this emotional book until the very final page.BUY IT HERE: https://amzn.to/45qfFxyHey! We have spent 3 years using StreamYard. Tyler Snure, author of two young adult fantasy novels, joins the podcast this week to talk about his writing process, words of encouragement for anyone embarking on the novel creation process at any age, and how he's found success pursuing his passion. Tyler's second book, The Sword of Sorenth, released in August 2022, hit #8 in the fantasy category on Amazon during its launch week. What makes his success even more fascinating is that he was 17 when his first book came out.
