Gen 1 & 2 we see God create them MALE & FEMALE (just 2), and they are given the charge to “be fruitful and increase in number” (Gen 2.28). Gen 2.24-25, “a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Matt 19.5-6, Jesus restates this and adds in “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Heb 13.4 - “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” More on Sexual Immorality read 1 Cor 6.9-20. 1 Cor 7.3-5 - actually instructs married couples to have regular intercourse. Seriously, read it. Sex is an amazing, beautiful thing that is a gift from God for us to experience in marriage.38:50 - Application. Lev 15.31, “You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean.”We need to avoid things that keep us unclean today as well. A modern application for this today is looking at how sin makes us “unclean” and hinders us. Hebrews 12.1-3. Leprosy is a picture (a metaphor for sin). We see in Leviticus 13-14 a description of leprosy (defiling skin diseases) that paints a picture of what sin is like and what has been done for us as a result of it.We see in Leviticus 13 that Sin Spreads (Lev 13.5-8), and that Sin Defiles & Isolates us (Lev 13.44-46). Sin desensatises us, it deadens our nerves (just like leprosy does). We see in Leviticus 14 the process that the sick person went through to be cleansed: First, the Priest went to the leper (Lev 14.1-3) - Jesus came to us (Luke 19.10, and Matt 18.12-14). Second, a sacrifice was offered (Lev 14.8-20) - Jesus is our sacrificial lamb (Heb 9.22, 10.1-25; John 1.29; 1 Cor 5.7; 1 John 4.9-10, and John 3.16). Three, the sick person had to do something; they had to act. In Leviticus, they were responsible for cleaning themselves (Lev 14.8-9). There is great symbolism in the Old Testament. In Leviticus 14.3-7 we see a cleansing ceremony to a person healed of leprosy (or a defiling skin disease). In that ceremony, there are two birds, a clay pot with fresh water as well as cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop. One can quickly read over these elements and their potential symbolism, pointing to the gospel narrative. We are continuing our way through the clean and unclean segment of Leviticus (chapters 11-15). In this Bible study we look at the purification rites associated with giving birth to a child. Dave talks again about what it means to be “clean” and “unclean.” Dave does spend a good deal of time talking about circumcision, as it is solidified in the law as a requirement of all Jewish boys on the 8th day. We start a new segment of Leviticus, looking at what is “clean” and “unclean” for the Israelites. We must remember that “unclean” is not necessarily bad, it just means that it is not holy or fit for use in worship of God in the tabernacle. Being “clean” or “unclean” was a designation related to someone's ability to participate in the worship at the tabernacle. If you were “unclean,” you had to go through the cleansing process to become “clean” in order to enter the tabernacle courtyard. It was all about being set apart and prepared to approach the Lord. In this Bible study of Leviticus chapter 9, we see the first tabernacle service. Up until this point, Moses has been conducting all the sacrifices, but now Aaron and his sons will take on the role of tabernacle priests, as outlined at the end of Exodus and fully explained in the first 7 chapters of Leviticus. At the end of the service, we see the Glory of the Lord appear to the people, and we see God consume their offerings with fire from heaven! Leviticus 8 Bible Study - The Establishment of the Priesthood - Part 1 - The Ordination. In this Bible Study we look at Leviticus chapter 8. Chapters 8-10 are all about the establishment of the priesthood, and today we look at the ordination process. In this bible study, we cover Matthew 5.1-12 looking at the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are a list of 8 statements from Jesus, each with a promise. “Blessed” - happy, joyful, on the right path- is the person who follows each of Jesus' calls. This includes a call to be poor in spirit, to mourn our sinful state, to be meek, to thirst for righteousness, to show mercy, to be pure of heart, to be a peacemaker, and to rejoice in persecution.The Beatitudes are a progressive ladder, with each separate step being critical to understand before attempting the next step. Leviticus 05.1-13 Bible Study - Sin Offering (Part 2)In this Bible study, we look at the 2nd half of the Sin Offering as outlined in Leviticus 5.1-13. The Israelites were required to perform a “sin offering” if they failed to do something that was required, such as failing to give a testimony, dealing properly with ritual uncleanness, or fulfilling an oath. We also look at the “sin offering” as the “purification offering” asking why a woman who just gave birth would be required to give a “sin offering?” A key verse in this passage is Leviticus 5.5 in which the text tells us that confession is key to the process. The sin offering (also known as the purification offering) is covered in Leviticus chapter 4 as well as the first thirteen verses of chapter 5. In this study, we will look at the first portion, as outlined in Leviticus chapter 4. The sin offering was an offering required when an individual (or group) had sinned unintentionally. The offering atoned for the sin and cleansed them from unrighteousness. What is the application for this for us today? Since the 1940's, Lake Trout have been extinct in all of the Great Lakes except Lake Superior. Pressure from commercial fishing as well as the invasion of sea lamprey devastated this native species, and the population in Lake Superior also suffered. For three generations an international team of scientists has been working to restore healthy Lake Trout populations in all the Great Lakes.
