Tribune Review Fanfare writer emeritas Jean Horne joins Mendelssohn Choir regular Christine Thompson and Jim Cunningham to speak about the work of the Pittsburgh Symphony Association in creating Symphony Splendor taking place Sunday June 27th from 11am to 5pm. The event features 16 members of the Pittsburgh Symphony and other musical guests performing in 12 glorious and often unknown gardens in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill. The proceeds benefit the Pittsburgh Symphony in a self-guided rain or shine tour with check-in at the Mansions on Fifth - 5105 Fifth Avenue. Although allies in education might seem few and far between, there are notable groups who rally for the cause. This week on #3PsinaPod, Angelia and Donnie speak with the CEO and President of Expect More Arizona, Christine Thompson. The longtime education and policy loyalist shares the organization’s mission and current commitments to making the state better for all. Thompson states the group is about “advocacy without the colors. We all want to do what’s right by our kids, strengthening our state and economy.” While she’s only led the group for a year, Expect More AZ has been active for nearly a decade. The nonpartisan, nonprofit emphasizes the importance of P-20 education and aims to make stakeholders aware of policy issues impacting education. Thompson encourages listeners to get involved by using the many resources on the organization's website, in preparation for upcoming elections. “Regardless of political flavor or background, getting people engaged is priority,” she says.

Higher Education and the New Economy: Crisis or Opportunity? - Audio
Transcript of the Christine Thompson and Greg Fahey remarks. March 4, 2010.
Higher Education and the New Economy: Crisis or Opportunity? - Audio
Question and answer session with Christine Thompson and Greg Fahey. March 4, 2010.
Higher Education and the New Economy: Crisis or Opportunity? - Audio
Christine Thompson, the Arizona Board of Regents' assistant executive direction of government affairs, spoke with Fahey during the session. She said these and other funding complexities are often misinterpreted and not understood. Greg Fahey, University of Arizona's associate vice president for external relations, said that during the 1970s and 1980s the state's university system was something of a juggernaut. Thompson and Fahey also said such shifts also have partially led toward decreased earmarks for the university system and an increased reliance on tuition and fees, federal grant dollars and private funds by way of donations.
