ELIO Well, here we are… at the end of another year. Despite a concerted effort to try and rush towards a return to some form of pre-pandemic life, the impact of this global catastrophe will ripple for years to come. In one way, shape, or form - all our lives have been changed. Now, many of us are looking ahead and thinking of what's to come in 2022. Cautiously optimistic and hopeful that things will gradually continue to improve and change for the better. On behalf of the entire team at Priority One: We wish you nothing but the best in this New Year and years to come – that you live long and prosperous lives. Narrowing our focus on our little corner, 2021 was a monumental year for Priority One. In March of 2021, our production celebrated its 500th episode and 10 years of weekly podcasting. That is no small endeavor. To celebrate the occasion, we were privileged to host several Trek Stars - new and veteran - and with donations from listeners like you, along with a matching gift by Rod Roddenberry - we raised over $4,000 for The Poor People's Campaign. I can think of no better way to celebrate such a milestone than to work towards finding ways of giving back. Now, here we are - having just wrapped our 535th episode. As I look back over the last 10 years, I find myself in complete awe over all the things we've accomplished. The conversations we've had with each other and special guests. The panels we've participated in. The events we've attended and hosted. The places we've been. The laughs we've shared. The friendships we've forged. But… as the saying goes… All good things must come to an end. You're listening to the final broadcast of Priority One Podcast! I realize this announcement may come as a surprise to most - if not all - of you. With so much going on in the Star Trek Multiverse, why would we stop covering the latest from our favorite franchise? I wish I could give you a simple and satisfying answer but, there isn't. Behind the scenes, we've had long conversations about the future of the show, our goals, our hopes. In the end, we came to the conclusion that now was the best time to jump on our horses and ride off quietly into the sunset – leaving behind an incredible legacy of passion and love for an I.P. that has touched so many of our lives. CAT It's been such a fantastic experience being part of the podcast for the past few years. I'm truly amazed at the talented group of people that work behind the scenes that edit and assemble the show. Also to Elio and the other co-hosts and guest hosts that we've had - thank you so much for putting up with my dogs and allowing me to join you each week. Getting to discuss Star Trek on these shows has been one of the most enjoyable experiences and during the pandemic - it's been a lifesaver.  With that said, we want to continue to support our Patrons since they have given so much to support us. We will be pausing all Patreon charges until further notice - but we are considering still continuing our after-hours show for you all. If you are a Patron - please reach out and let us know your thoughts.  So, even though the main podcast is ending, we still want to keep in touch via Patreon- or come and play Star Trek Online with the Priority One Armada - you know we are not going anywhere. We'll still host our livestream every Saturday - everyone is welcome!  ROSCO I was the most recent addition to the crew. I am one of the many people on this podcast who went from listener to being part of the team.  I think I said yes because I felt welcome, and that was just by listening to the podcast.   What I soon realized was that I had found my people. I had found like-minded people who were passionate about one of the things that has been a huge influence on my life. I got the chance to talk about Star Trek EVERY WEEK!!  What a dream job. And although it's coming to an end and we may not be producing any more episodes, you'll still find our entire back catalogue on our website and wherever you get your podcasts. I want to add my own personal thanks to my co-hosts for making me feel welcome, my respect and admiration to the team that works behind the scenes to put this show together, and to thank you for listening.  We're an amazing community to be a part of, it has been a privilege to share the news about it. ELIO Before we leave you, I need to thank the team that has made this possible. Over the last 10 years, we have had a remarkable group of people volunteering their time and talents to this production. Fans of Star Trek from all over the world who decided to come and play with us each and every week. From as far as Australia, the UK, from Germany, Canada, from Argentina, and the US, Priority One was brought to you by a global team of amazingly talented people. Whether it be our website and social platforms, our livestreams, the copy written for our weekly shows… to the weekly undertaking of editing our ramblings – no single person is responsible for this production. I encourage you to visit our website and look over our cast and crew page to learn more about these remarkable individuals… because without their incredible dedication over the years, this show would not have been made possible. I also want to thank some of our most influential collaborators and contributors. To folks like Al Rivera at Cryptic Studios who always supported and believed in the work we did to share in the joy that Star Trek Online has brought over the years. To John Champion and Rod Roddenberry, for recognizing our work and welcoming us into the Roddenberry Podcast Family. I will forever cherish the words John and Rod shared with me when I informed them of our decision. It has been an honor. But, most importantly, a big thanks to you. Our listeners – our friends — our extended family. Over these 10 years, you have been our driving force for producing this weekly show. The team and I are forever grateful for your dedicated and loyal support. For joining us and welcoming us into your weekly routine. It has been an honor to produce this show for you and I am grateful to each and every one of you. As sad as this may be, it's important for us to hang on to the best parts of our lives. With that in mind, let's remember some of those moments and share some laughs with you… Take care.

This week on Episode 524 of Priority One: New York Comic Con is ready to Trek Out; the community rallies behind Wilson Cruz; Star Trek Online updates its minimum system requirements; mobile games cross to desktop; and we review Lower Decks' “Where Pleasant Fountains Lie”–but not before we chat with Cryptic Studios's Content Creator Ryon and Environment Artist Gianna! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Trekking Out the Big Apple By Elio Lleo Convention season is in full swing and New York Comic Con is next. Starting October 7th and ending October 10th, this four day event usually has stuff for everyone! Unique to this year's presentation is hybrid participation: not only are organizers reducing the total number of attendees, you can also purchase a virtual ticket that will give you access to some of the panels right from the comfort of your own home. But what's so special about NYCC? As of right now, Paramount+ is slated to present at least two panels: on Saturday, October 9th at 12:45pm the cast and producers of Star Trek: Discovery take the Empire Stage. Then on Sunday, October 10, Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere its first episode along with a panel. Image: ViacomCBS/Nickelodeon, via TrekCore. But that's not all–join the Roddenberry Podcast Network as we present a panel titled “Star Trek's Guide to Community.” I'll be there along with Kennedy and Sue from Women at Warp! That's happening Saturday, Oct 9th at 2:15pm. There's also a Hallmark presentation with new Trek ornaments, a virtual only panel with the folks behind the new Star Trek Magazine, and even Bill Shatner will be there on Thurs, October 7th.  Wilson Cruz Harassed During Star Trek Day By Elio Lleo When it comes to communities, even Star Trek's can be incredibly divisive. The majority of the time, it's about NuTrek vs older Trek, who the better first officer is, or which ship is cooler. However, there are times when things can get dark and people start to show their true colors–like one fan who was offered the privilege of attending the Star Trek Day celebrations in person. Long story short, at one point during the event, while Wilson Cruz was on stage, someone in the audience yield out a homophobic slur. According to reports, no one did anything about it. The guest was not removed nor have they been identified (yet). With incredible grace and patience, Wilson continued on and later took to Twitter to address the matter. https://twitter.com/wcruz73/status/1436333680880934927 Although he may not have wanted to draw so much attention to the matter, we want to take a moment to remind you–our listeners–that tolerance for the bigoted has its limits. When you see something, say something. Learn ways on how to be the best ally you can be for people who are marginalized on a daily basis. If you're on social media and someone goes on a hate-filled rant, step up. It's the inaction of those with the means to stand up to injustices that empower those who want to watch the world burn. [If you don't think this belongs in Trek, then there's the airlock. Help yourself.–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via StarTrek.com IP Theft, the Sincerest Form of Flattery By Cat Hough On Monday, we were treated to the big uniform reveal by General Jay Raymond, Chief of Space Operations for Space Force who tweeted, "Every winning team needs a uniform!.I'm excited to share the new look with you today." And to no one's surprise, the Twitterverse immediately noticed some striking similarities to some other uniforms that we are quite familiar with. They were described by one person as "a blend of the Star Trek Enterprise dress uniform, but with the Mirror Universe diagonal."  https://twitter.com/SpaceForceCSO/status/1440323962697752590 [I am voluntarily putting this into my own shownotes for your edification, dear listener. You owe me.–Ed.] Josh Weinstein, a veteran writer for The Simpsons and Futurama, said the uniform reminded him of the ridiculously tight outfits worn by Zapp Brannigan; Movies in Focus hopped on the satirical bandwagon with the image of an Imperial Star Destroyer officer from the original Star Wars trilogy. "These new Space Force uniforms are looking great," jokes the caption. Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Reuben Klamer, the designer of the original Starfleet phaser rifle for the original series of Star Trek, passed away at the age of 99, according to the Toy Association. Klamer also designed props for other shows, including a gun for the hit 1960s series The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  https://youtu.be/oWGNDoXG9R8 STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds PSA: She Canna Take Any More, Cap'ns! By Thomas Reynolds To every thing there is a season–and in Cryptic's opinion, the season for Windows 7 is long past. Starting February 15, 2022, anyone still using the 10-year-old OS (seriously, not even Microsoft supports it anymore) won't be able to patch or log into STO and Neverwinter. Only Windows 8 and 10 (with the superior 64-bit intellect) will have a home on the final frontier. DirectX 10 support is also getting ejected like a spent warp core on February 15th, with both games requiring Feature Level 11 or higher. That means your computer needs to have one of the following video card chipsets to play: NVidia GeForce GTX 400 or better ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better Given all the fun and excitement of buying graphics cards these days, if your current card isn't up to the task...well, godspeed. [Pictured: my rig next February.–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via KVNF Public Radio. Aux2Bat Gets Boimed Out By Thomas Reynolds The aqueduct, the magnetic compass, the Aux2Bat. All of these simple technologies have withstood the test of time, but the last may be the most miraculous. Needing only three Technician doffs and one boff ability at minimum, the Aux2Bat ship build is easy to assemble, trivial to fly, and still keeps your bridge officers ready for whatever space wizardry you demand of them. Sure, it hasn't been the meta in a sehlat's age, but you know what? Aux2Bat does the job, it does it pretty well, and that's pretty much all we ask...until now. Ever drop a Gravity Well, and notice your Tyken's Rift is now off-limits for 15 seconds? That's the Shared Category Cooldown kicking in, forcing you to pace yourself rather than let everything rip at once. When Cryptic first released the Boimler Effect trait, it provided a 2.5% percent chance of resetting every bridge officer ability to its Shared Category Cooldown, whenever you used a non-specialist boff ability. Great in theory, but one-in-forty odds just aren't worth a 200 Lobi investment. Yeah, that's was also our reaction. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekZone.de So Cryptic did a little tweaking, like you do, and made it a 17.5% percent proc chance instead. As STO streamer @AugmentedDG declared on Twitter, “Boimler Effect is now as good as Aux2Bat...for cooldown reduction.” Bold words, to be sure, but there's also a fairly convincing clip of him keeping eight of his escort's twelve boff abilities concurrently running like an overambitious plate spinner. By Thomas Reynolds One of Trek cosplay's hallmarks is its hair-splitting fidelity to what's seen on screen, even when the creators themselves don't quite pull it off. Combine that tendency with STO's promise of personal immersion, and it's no surprise that some players want their captain's threads to look “correct.” To help make that a little easier, Cryptic released official in-game color guides for both the newly-available Lower Decks Starfleet jacket, and their original Khitomer uniform creation. However, rapturous Space Barbie enthusiasts should make sure they're using the second released Khitomer guide, as the first one had incorrect pant color codes. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1439020385572245509 The Sally Ride, the Ross, and You By Shane Hoover If you were a fan of the Star Trek Adventures web series “Shield of Tomorrow” or “Clear Skies”, you're already familiar with the dangers and wonders of the Shackleton Expanse. Trek out the tweet, scrape together that Lobi, and give your boffs more buffer time than they can handle. https://twitter.com/AugmentedDG/status/1438707179268284425 Is there in Screen Accuracy No Beauty? This week's Community Questions are: In the same way fans clamor for the DC Snyder-verse and Batfleck, should we rally behind Hawley to see his Star Trek project created? What canonical stories or characters do you think Discovery could explore well? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Who Mourns for Hawley? By Elio Lleo In a recent interview with Deadline's Pete Hammond, Noah Hawley addresses his disappointment that his vision for a Star Trek film didn't come to fruition. When asked about the project he had this to say:  “In retrospect, what surprised me is not that Emma Watts came in and said ‘are you people crazy? This is an untested crew, this is an original idea, we don't know if this is going to work or not work.' It's that I got as far as I did...it was a really fun movie, and I think it would've been a great film. But you can't control these things, so you move on.” Image: FX, via Deadline. Now you might have heard Hawley name-drop Emma Watts. Watts replaced Wyck Godfrey as President of the Paramount Motion Picture Group back in June 2020. That leads us to our first community question this week: In the same way fans clamor for the DC Snyder-verse and Batfleck, should we rally behind Hawley to see his Star Trek project created? Let us know in the comment section for this episode at priorityonepodcast.com or by replying to our community question post on our social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Wishing for Season 4 By Elio Lleo While we're on the topic of interviews, The Hollywood Reporter Presents Q&A video series featured Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Paradise, and Olatunde Osunsanmi of Star Trek: Discovery. The conversation focused a great deal on Season 3 and repeated a lot of things we've already heard. Perhaps the one question asked that deviated from the norm was, what canonical plots or characters are on the writer's room wish list, to which Michelle Paradise replied: “at the start of any season...we have these questions about what are the awesome things in canon that we haven't touched on yet? Or where are the opportunities, like this season with the Guardian of Forever? Having sixty years of history is so much fun, to be able to bring in some of these things. And then, thanks to the time jump, we're actually a bit ahead of many of those things. We aren't trying to marry them to our current timeframe, so we can play a little bit more.” Only Grudge is better at adhering to an NDA. Image: ViacomCBS, via DenOfGeek. They went on to praise the cast and crew for their incredible work behind the scenes and in front of the camera. When asked about Season 4, Paradise's answer was incredibly vague, though---sticking to an answer that didn't give anything away. That leads us to our next community question this week: What canonical stories or characters do you think Discovery could explore well? Re-Lorca-tion Expenses By Cat Hough Do you ever find yourself wondering what it would take to get Lorca back into Star Trek? [Nope.-Ed.] Well, wonder no more---the man himself, Jason Isaacs, told comicbook.com the answer. And it's simple: have a good script. Contract negotiations, am I right? Image: ViacomCBS, via The Hollywood Reporter. But is that answer simple? One would hope so...or at least hope the right script is out there. Because Isaacs won't take just any role. He says that he “[h]ad a fantastic time on Star Trek, I loved all the people, I love being part of that universe, and Prime Lorca, the Prime Universe version of my captain, has yet to be found. But I wouldn't go back just to be in it, I'd go back if you had a great story to tell." Isaacs' latest on-screen appearance was in Creation Stories, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 16th. Moore's “Redemption” By Rosco McQueen This week marks 30 years since the cliffhanger episode “Redemption, Part 1” originally went to air. It laid a lot of the foundations for Klingon culture, thanks to writer Ronald D. Moore...but it almost didn't happen. In an interview this week with The Hollywood Reporter, Moore discusses building the character of Worf over time with episodes like “The Bonding” and “Sins of the Father”, as well as slowly building up the Klingon culture. So much so, that Moore became known as “the Klingon guy.” But there was a lot of pushback from Gene Roddenberry, who didn't see Worf as a main character. To Gene, “[TNG] was about Picard. He was the Captain. This was the first time that Next Gen---that Star Trek, really---had ever done a big war story like this. And this was going to be the series' 100th episode on top of it. So, we had to fight somewhat to get the episode going.” Some fought harder than others. Image: ViacomCBS, via DenOfGeek. Executive Producer Rick Berman and the late TNG showrunner Michael Piller helped run interference with Roddenberry, and thankfully “Redemption” made it to air.  If it hadn't, there would have been no Klingon Civil War, or characters like the Duras sisters and the half-Romulan, half-human Sela---who continues to vex us in Star Trek Online to this day.   Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Wilson Cruz chatted with Yahoo about the importance of representation–not just in Star Trek, but in television and film in general. He shared his own story about breaking down barriers and forging his own path in the industry throughout the 90's and early 00's. The article isn't all about Trek, but it's an important conversation. See and be seen. Image: Michael Gibson/ViacomCBS, via Yahoo! ASTROMETRICS REPORT By Dr. Robert Hurt For this week's Astrometrics Report, we examine a solution to a dark mystery of astrophysics. Here I'm talking literally about the darkening of one of the brightest stars in the night sky. Even the most casual backyard astronomer can point out the constellation Orion in the fall and winter skies. The bright red star forming Orion's upper left shoulder is known as Betelgeuse (“BEE-tel juice” or “BEH-tel juice”, if you want an alternate but equally valid pronunciation). Astronomy on the Easy difficulty setting. Image: N. Risinger/ESO. Whatever your phonetic preference, it is the 10th brightest star in the entire sky---so imagine everyone's excitement back in late 2019, when this stellar beacon began to get unexpectedly darker. This was not subtle: by early 2020, it had dipped to about a third of its usual brightness, almost fading into the background of the Orion constellation. This was a big deal for a red giant star, which is about 18 times more massive than our Sun and 760 times larger in physical size. That makes it 3.5 times larger than the Earth's orbit---which is big enough to gobble up Mars and the entire asteroid belt, falling just short of Jupiter's orbit. So what could make such a huge, massive star go dark? That question prompted a lot of speculation because of another aspect of red giant stars. They are the last evolutionary stop for huge stars, before they explode as supernovae. Stars a bit more massive than our Sun will reach a point where nuclear fusion has produced a much wider variety of elements than our Sun ever will. This ultimately leaves a growing iron core that becomes so dense that gravity will overwhelm it, causing it to collapse to form a vastly-denser neutron star or black hole. In that instant the outer layers of the star will cascade into this sudden void, heat up, and rebound with an incredible release of energy that---for a brief period---match or exceed the energy output of all the other stars in the galaxy combined. Betelgeuse is on the short list of candidate stars that could make this next big boom in this galaxy. And that would certainly be exciting! At a distance of about 600 ly, such an event would be so bright as to be visible in the daytime sky for weeks. But relax: it is more than distant enough to keep us safe from getting cooked in the process. So, was this rapid dimming the precursor to the astronomical show of a lifetime? As you might guess from the lack of sensational headlines, the star returned to its regular brightness. No boom. But the question remained: what had happened to our favorite red giant star? In a recent paper, astronomers have announced a resolution to this mystery...and the culprit is dust that came from Betelgeuse itself. The evidence was presented in a series of high-resolution images of the star, showing what seemed to be a smoky veil passing in front of its disc before moving on. Image: ESO. That evidence alone is an incredible telescopic achievement. Because even though Betelgeuse is over a hundred times farther away than our near neighbor Alpha Centauri, its incredible size makes it only one of only a handful of stars of which we've been able to resolve surface features. Those images, along with infrared light measurements that did not show any decrease in brightness, helped seal the deal for dust being the dimming agent. Fundamental changes to the structure of the star (or even Michael Bay-style alien megastructures swarming around it) would affect all wavelengths of light, while dust blocks mainly visible light but becomes largely transparent in the infrared. In the recent study, astronomers have proposed that the turbulent star had ejected a bubble of gas, cooling slightly in the process. That allowed the gas to condense into particles of dust that, while orbiting around the star, passed in front of it for a few months---causing all of the fuss. While that may not be as dramatic as an explosion to put Hollywood blockbusters to shame, it's still a pretty amazing result. This illuminates one of the many ways stars are responsible for forging so many of the elements of the universe that make up planets and people. This dust ejection is one way these elemental building blocks are blown out into the galaxy, to become the source material for new stars, planets, and maybe even lifeforms in the distant future. Also making waves [ugh---Ed.] is the Tsunami Generator. This Universal Kit Module replicates a wave that rolls out from the player, smashing into everything in front of it before crashing apart. The force of the wave knocks down creatures and injures them, and has a chance to temporarily disable electronic devices, such as turrets and drones. And the new kit frame, Risian Vulcanology, provides rebreather functionality to protect you from toxic gas, and its heat sink controls grant complete immunity to fire! Don't forget this year's new pets: The pastel-colored Transcendent Caracal (Vanity Pet) and Transcendent Tribble. Petting the tribble will “grant a constant, passive small chance to resist and throw off any effect that would control you, as you refuse to be limited or constrained. If you're on a team with multiple people petting this tribble, the chances stack based on the number of people involved. This tribble is unafraid of Klingons or other species that have treated Tribbles negatively in the past.” Because again, it's important to be highly visible. Image: Cryptic Studios. Something in the Air Tonight… By Cat Hough Hey, surprise! There's a new bundle. The New Genesis Bundle will be available on PC for 7500 Zen starting on June 24th, and is on sale for the first week. This bundle features two new T6 ships: the Malachowski-class, an updated Clarke Multi-Mission Command Cruiser, and the long awaited Oberth-class, otherwise known as the Grissom Light Science Vessel. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds Gamma Recruits, Prepare for Battle...Again! By Rosco McQueen As of this moment, we are all dead.  We go into battle to reclaim our lives. This we do gladly, for we are Jem'Hadar. Remember, Victory is life! Seriously guys, have you considered unionizing? Image: Cryptic Studios. For the glory of the Founders, Star Trek Online's recruitment revamp continues with the Gamma Recruit event, active until July 22.  If you create a new Jem'Hadar character you'll gain access to special bonuses awarded through gameplay, which also unlock rewards across your whole account. This is the third time players have been able to create a Gamma Recruit since the unveiling of the Victory is Life expansion in 2018, with Cryptic adding some new goals and altering a few to include all reputation marks. Summertime and the Livin's Easy… By Cat Hough The one time my Gorn can wear his Speedo and not get arrested. Image: Cryptic Studios. Cryptic announced more details today about the upcoming Lohlunat Festival, running concurrently on all platforms from July 1st to July 31st. The blog post announced that the event ship will be an all new Risian Luxury Cruiser Vessel [T6] with details and ship stats to be released in a separate post. All of the old favorites from previous years will be returning, including powerboard races, the biathlon, horga'hn hunting, scavenging with Sovak and, of course, the galaxy-famous dance party. Participating in any of the events will grant progress towards the Risian Luxury Cruiser Vessel! ...spoiler? Image: Cryptic Studios. There's a new baseball uniform for the Jupiter Station Stem Bolts in the Event Store and two new T-shirts to collect. You can get a DISCO shirt, or the famous Chu Chu dance shirt (woo!). There's also a new impulsive floater, powerboard and vanity shield in the Stem Bolts colors. But what about the third chu? Image: Cryptic Studios. (Please note: these two ships will also be available as separate purchases outside the New Genesis Bundle.) Image: a most beautiful dream, via Cryptic Studios. The bundle will also include a number of additional account-wide items, such as the Genesis Ground Vanity Device*, Wrath of Khan outfits and a Type II Phaser Compression Pistol (C. 2285). Finally, two Experimental Starship Upgrade Tokens and two Fleet Ship Modules boost your purchasing value further. This ship bundle will also be available to players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at a later date. Oh and this too. World Entertainment vertriebenen Hack and Slay Spiels…

This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you believe the Star Trek Franchise is diverse enough to avoid ‘Franchise Fatigue? AND CQ: What Lower Decks content do you want to see in-game? Story missions with Beta Shift? Tulgana IV location map? The Dog? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Alex Kurtzman Takes 5 Alex Kurtzman is a busy man. Other than his work on “The Comey Rule” and the upcoming “Silence of the Lambs” television adaptation titled “Clarice”, Kurtzman also works on a little franchise called Star Trek. This week, Kurtzman sat down with the Hollywood Reporter’s “TV’s Top 5” to discuss everything he’s been working on - and while we may or may not be excited for his other projects - well...let’s just say we aren’t partnered with the Thomas Harris Podcast Network. Kurtzman spent a lot of time talking about Star Trek: Discovery, which is of no surprise - the third season’s premiere is set for October 15th. When asked about how long the series would likely run, Kurtzman was frank in both the series' praise and direction - as well as in the Showrunners commitment to keeping Trek fresh. Along those same lines, Kurtzman noted that he had plans with ViacomCBS for Star Trek that reached - currently - to 2027. When asked whether he was afraid of over-saturating the market with Star Trek, Kurtzman expressed that he felt the world needed the franchise, and that diversity in programming was the key to keeping it relevant. Lower Decks NYCC Panel Last week, in episode 481 of Priority One, we talked about the New York Comic Con Star Trek happenings. But if you’ll remember, we skipped coverage of the Lower Decks panel because it was spoiler heavy. You’ve had a week to catch up, but if you still haven’t watched the season finale of “Lower Decks”, skip to Star Trek Gaming! -- SPOILERS INCOMING -- During the Comic Con panel, Showrunner Mike McMahan and the cast of “Lower Decks” talked about what happened in season 1, and where their characters were heading for season 2 - sans, sadly, Fred Tatasciore’s Lieutenant Shaxs. There were some fun ideas on how to bring back the battle-hardened Bajoran - and discussion on whether he was really dead - or just mostly dead. About half way through the panel, the cast was joined by series special guest Jonathan Frakes, and that’s when things got predictably spoiler-y. As it turns out, Frakes spoiled plot points for co-star Jack Quaid before the show even started. Of Riker, and his appearance on Lower Decks, Showrunner Mike McMahan stressed the characters' fun attitude and joy.  And if you’re concerned that Boimler will mysteriously find his way back to the Cerritos for the Season 2 premiere, fear not. He will be on the Titan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLVO17dQOS8 Mike McMahan Talks Lower Decks This week, Mike McMahan took a Season One victory lap - of sorts - hitting Youtube, Variety, and Inverse to discuss what happened on and off screen during “Lower Decks” first season. On Youtube, McMahan explained his thoughts behind using the Pakled as the finale’s “Big Bads”.  He continued those musings with Variety, before moving on to spoilers - and cheeky possible-spoilers. ”We’ll see the Titan next season because Boimler is off the Cerritos, and we’ll be seeing Capt. Riker again as well. Boimler has been talking about moving on to bigger and better all first season, and now we’re going to see what happens when he gets what he wants.”. McMahan said Councilor Troi would NOT make in appearance in Season 2. But when asked if OTHER TNG Alumn would join, noted, ”That, my friend, I will not tell you, I would say, feels like a pretty good chance of it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxWq77kgg3Q McMahan told Variety that the second season of Lower Decks would dive deeper into sexuality - Mariner’s specifically - saying ”For me and for the writers as we were making this, we didn’t intentionally mean for anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis. Every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual, in a way. That being said, I am not the most amazing person at writing those kind of stories. I think we get a little bit better about it in the second season.” Mike McMahan Keeps Talking Lower Decks Heading to Inverse, McMahan may have answered a question we’ve asked on Priority One. Could Lower Decks be an off-kilter representation of the Cerritos’ adventures through Starfleet gossip? ”If you’re in Starfleet, and all this stuff has happened, it would be like if you were in the military now, and you were reading about — or hearing about – [real events] either officially or word of mouth through people who have been on ships, or people catching up. There are so many people on these ships, of course they’re going to talk to each other. They’re going to take real life events and put those into media. I think what I’m trying to say is there is no one unifying theory of communication. To me, it’s more that there’s going to be mosaic of communication. There’s things that are going to be popularized, there’s things in the news, there’s things you’ll learn at Starfleet academy there’s going to be stuff you’ll hear rumors about. It’s out there and it’s going to be known.” If you’re wondering about the “First Contact” uniforms making an appearance on Lower Decks, McMahan had an answer for that too! ”I’m very fascinated with the idea that we have replicators [in Star Trek] that can make anything. But who’s designing that stuff? It becomes like intellectual items, like why aren’t they all eating Lincoln’s last meal? The more you look at it, some ships would have different stuff, which is why you’d want to get the thing with the purple stripe on it, which goes all the way down to uniforms. I mean why is Starfleet even in uniforms? It’s not to make them camouflaged and they’re not strictly military. It’s representational of who Starfleet is.” STLV 2020 CANCELLED We’ve got some breaking news tonight, thanks to our Associate Producer Shane Hoover. According to NBC news affiliate Las Vegas 3, the official Star Trek Las Vegas convention has been cancelled. From the website, "Creation Entertainment, the company that brings the Trek convention each year, has announced that the December 2020 show is not going to happen due to pandemic-related reasons. The Star Trek convention will resume next year in Las Vegas on August 11 - 15 at the Rio.” Though we couldn't find any OFFICIAL release from Creation Entertainment at the time of this writing, their previous STLV 2020 page is no longer accessible. Instead it gives way to the 55th anniversary of Star Trek - and creator Gene Roddenberry’s 100th Birthday - in 2021. Keep your ear right here for more on the news. Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Venture(Beat) into the Final Frontier By Thomas Reynolds Newer captains may find it hard to believe (and older captains harder to accept), but Cryptic Studios opened its doors before the NX-01 first left spacedock. This year Cryptic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and last week tech business magazine VentureBeat published an interview with Cryptic CEO Stephen D’Angelo. In the interview D’Angelo shows off his toy cabinet (he has a Galaxy-X model, not that we’re jealous or anything), and speaks about thirteen years with a game company driven by outside IP. Saying specifically of Star Trek Online,  ”Star Trek is a universe more than a storytelling style. We’ve tried to, like I said, give people an experience in that universe that captures the look, the feel, and the stories, but going for the diversity the universe offers”. D’Angelo also talked about being STO’s executive producer when it went free-to-play, the changing nature of the game’s playerbase, and the company’s history in the MMO space as a whole. The Titan Reprises A Familiar Tune? By Thomas Reynolds Captains, be advised: the Trek nuggets in this segment may spoil your dinner. Proceed with caution. Last week’s season finale of Star Trek Lower Decks captivated us with drama, tragedy, callbacks, comedy–you know, all that jazz. While the show taketh away (RIP Shaxs), it might also giveth STO players something they’ve wanted for a very long time. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account dropped a screenshot of the in-game Titan and quoted its swingin’ captain’s call to action. Admittedly, this doesn’t explicitly say what is going on with the Titan in 2411. Cryptic may have simply been capitalizing on the ship’s newfound public awareness. However, we had it from Ambassador Kael himself that “there’s something coming from Lower Decks soon-ish,” but he couldn’t tell us about it lest he ”spoil a surprise in the last episode.” It’s hard not to imagine a T6 Luna-class is finally in the cards, and  its holodeck has the Bourbon Street Bar already loaded. Or maybe we’re getting little horga'hn ground devices for the upcoming Tulgana IV map. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314569893358968832 Synth Wave: the Extended Remix By Thomas Reynolds Hopefully you’ve had a chance to play House Shattered’s new TFO, “Synth Wave,” since it was released last week. If you have, you might've noticed some of the escaping ships really seem to like the Utopia Planitia Starbase, because they never leave it. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account also confirmed that ships were getting stuck within the starbase, which means they could never leave and the TFO could never end. Cryptic says it’ll fix the issue with the October 13th patch, and the event will be extended by another week to make up for the bug. Apparently you shouldn’t let homicidal AIs write your Holodeck code. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314617854197526531?s=20

In Star Trek gaming, we dive further into House Shattered and STO Devs drop in on the team to say "Hello!" Then, Gray takes us down memory lane with another RetroTrekGame review followed by our review of the Season Finale of Lower Decks. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This week, Kurtzman sat down with the Hollywood Reporter's “TV's Top 5” to discuss everything he's been working on - and while we may or may not be excited for his other projects - well...let's just say we aren't partnered with the Thomas Harris Podcast Network. Kurtzman spent a lot of time talking about Star Trek: Discovery, which is of no surprise - the third season's premiere is set for October 15th. But if you'll remember, we skipped coverage of the Lower Decks panel because it was spoiler heavy. You've had a week to catch up, but if you still haven't watched the season finale of “Lower Decks”, skip to Star Trek Gaming! -- SPOILERS INCOMING -- During the Comic Con panel, Showrunner Mike McMahan and the cast of “Lower Decks” talked about what happened in season 1, and where their characters were heading for season 2 - sans, sadly, Fred Tatasciore's Lieutenant Shaxs. There were some fun ideas on how to bring back the battle-hardened Bajoran - and discussion on whether he was really dead - or just mostly dead. About half way through the panel, the cast was joined by series special guest Jonathan Frakes, and that's when things got predictably spoiler-y. As it turns out, Frakes spoiled plot points for co-star Jack Quaid before the show even started. Of Riker, and his appearance on Lower Decks, Showrunner Mike McMahan stressed the characters' fun attitude and joy.  And if you're concerned that Boimler will mysteriously find his way back to the Cerritos for the Season 2 premiere, fear not. On Youtube, McMahan explained his thoughts behind using the Pakled as the finale's “Big Bads”.  He continued those musings with Variety, before moving on to spoilers - and cheeky possible-spoilers. ”We'll see the Titan next season because Boimler is off the Cerritos, and we'll be seeing Capt. Riker again as well. Boimler has been talking about moving on to bigger and better all first season, and now we're going to see what happens when he gets what he wants.”. McMahan said Councilor Troi would NOT make in appearance in Season 2. But when asked if OTHER TNG Alumn would join, noted, ”That, my friend, I will not tell you, I would say, feels like a pretty good chance of it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxWq77kgg3Q McMahan told Variety that the second season of Lower Decks would dive deeper into sexuality - Mariner's specifically - saying ”For me and for the writers as we were making this, we didn't intentionally mean for anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis. Every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual, in a way. That being said, I am not the most amazing person at writing those kind of stories. I think we get a little bit better about it in the second season.” Mike McMahan Keeps Talking Lower Decks Heading to Inverse, McMahan may have answered a question we've asked on Priority One. Could Lower Decks be an off-kilter representation of the Cerritos' adventures through Starfleet gossip? ”If you're in Starfleet, and all this stuff has happened, it would be like if you were in the military now, and you were reading about — or hearing about – [real events] either officially or word of mouth through people who have been on ships, or people catching up. There are so many people on these ships, of course they're going to talk to each other. They're going to take real life events and put those into media. I think what I'm trying to say is there is no one unifying theory of communication. To me, it's more that there's going to be mosaic of communication. There's things that are going to be popularized, there's things in the news, there's things you'll learn at Starfleet academy there's going to be stuff you'll hear rumors about. It's out there and it's going to be known.” If you're wondering about the “First Contact” uniforms making an appearance on Lower Decks, McMahan had an answer for that too! ”I'm very fascinated with the idea that we have replicators [in Star Trek] that can make anything. But who's designing that stuff? It becomes like intellectual items, like why aren't they all eating Lincoln's last meal? The more you look at it, some ships would have different stuff, which is why you'd want to get the thing with the purple stripe on it, which goes all the way down to uniforms. I mean why is Starfleet even in uniforms? It's not to make them camouflaged and they're not strictly military. It's representational of who Starfleet is.” STLV 2020 CANCELLED We've got some breaking news tonight, thanks to our Associate Producer Shane Hoover. Instead it gives way to the 55th anniversary of Star Trek - and creator Gene Roddenberry's 100th Birthday - in 2021. This year Cryptic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and last week tech business magazine VentureBeat published an interview with Cryptic CEO Stephen D'Angelo. In the interview D'Angelo shows off his toy cabinet (he has a Galaxy-X model, not that we're jealous or anything), and speaks about thirteen years with a game company driven by outside IP. Saying specifically of Star Trek Online,  ”Star Trek is a universe more than a storytelling style. We've tried to, like I said, give people an experience in that universe that captures the look, the feel, and the stories, but going for the diversity the universe offers”. D'Angelo also talked about being STO's executive producer when it went free-to-play, the changing nature of the game's playerbase, and the company's history in the MMO space as a whole. The Titan Reprises A Familiar Tune? By Thomas Reynolds Captains, be advised: the Trek nuggets in this segment may spoil your dinner. Proceed with caution. Last week's season finale of Star Trek Lower Decks captivated us with drama, tragedy, callbacks, comedy–you know, all that jazz. While the show taketh away (RIP Shaxs), it might also giveth STO players something they've wanted for a very long time. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account dropped a screenshot of the in-game Titan and quoted its swingin' captain's call to action. Admittedly, this doesn't explicitly say what is going on with the Titan in 2411. Cryptic may have simply been capitalizing on the ship's newfound public awareness. However, we had it from Ambassador Kael himself that “there's something coming from Lower Decks soon-ish,” but he couldn't tell us about it lest he ”spoil a surprise in the last episode.” It's hard not to imagine a T6 Luna-class is finally in the cards, and  its holodeck has the Bourbon Street Bar already loaded. Or maybe we're getting little horga'hn ground devices for the upcoming Tulgana IV map. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314569893358968832 Synth Wave: the Extended Remix By Thomas Reynolds Hopefully you've had a chance to play House Shattered's new TFO, “Synth Wave,” since it was released last week. If you have, you might've noticed some of the escaping ships really seem to like the Utopia Planitia Starbase, because they never leave it. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account also confirmed that ships were getting stuck within the starbase, which means they could never leave and the TFO could never end. Cryptic says it'll fix the issue with the October 13th patch, and the event will be extended by another week to make up for the bug. Apparently you shouldn't let homicidal AIs write your Holodeck code. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314617854197526531?s=20

This week on Episode 480 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ UberEats newest ad campaign - trust us, it belongs here - Jonathan Frakes spoilers, Discovery’s second go at a first impression, and what H. Jon Benjamin thinks of tribbles! In Star Trek gaming, Star Trek Online teams with Gameheads - providing actionable support for people of color, and Modiphius releases a helpful “Star Trek Adventures” Dev blog tutorial! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: Are YOU concerned about “The Vulcan Hello”s low viewership numbers? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan The Captain and the Master Talk Tomato This week, SIR Patrick Stewart and Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker - Mark Hamill - sat down with Charles Thorp of Men’s Health to discuss their new advertisement campaign for the food delivery service - “Uber Eats”. In the three ad series, Captain Picard portrayer Sir Patrick faces off against Luke Skywalker Stager Mark Hamill in Connect Four, Air Hockey, and some - well - let’s call them deep-rooted family issues. Besides talking about the similarities and differences between the two franchises, the pair recalled their time on-set. Sir Patrick discussed his first day of shooting, saying ”I was doing my first scene where I appeared on camera as Jean-Luc Picard. I was walking down one of the Enterprise corridors, and one of the sliding automated doors opened on my left and there was Commander Riker played by Jonathan Frakes. The script had him saying something to me, and I was just supposed to nod and then walk away. The director called, “Cut!” Then Jonathan yelled out, “That’s what they call British face-acting!” The whole crew laughed, and I remember gratefully thinking that I was going to be spending all of this time with funny people. This is going to be alright.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jtkuAVLdtA But Wait, There's More! Stewart had some interesting comments regarding his unknowing inspiration for Captain Picard, telling Men’s Journal in part ”I trained and worked out for years before I ever got in front of the camera playing Picard. My father was a military man, and he ended his military career at the end of the second World War in 1945, as a regimental sergeant major of The Parachute Regiment. For every gentleman from the outside looking in, he was a superstar. It took me decades to come to the realization of how much he influenced me not only as a man but also as an actor, especially when taking up Picard.[...] through him I had an incredible role model for the character, even if I wasn’t consciously pursuing it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkzLXZtu_Xw Finally, if you ever feel guilty about loving Star Wars or fantasizing about a crossover - DON’T! You’re in good company, according to Sir Patrick ”I will admit that, at least for us on Star Trek, we have fantasied about a combined universe between Star Wars and Trek movie. There have been a lot of ideas thrown about on putting together two iconic universes, and having all of these great characters coming into contact. I would personally get such a kick out of that.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2cSBtSdcE0 The article has a ton of interesting tidbits - and the ads are fun - so we encourage you to head to our website and trek out all of it! Jonathan Frakes Talks Disco Season 3 Sir Patrick’s “The Next Generation” co-star - and prolific television director - Jonathan Frakes Rikered a chair to talk with friends of the network, Trekmovie.com. Hot off his Galaxycon Event, Frakes chatted with Anthony Pascale about the characters, events, and shooting of Star Trek: Discovery, season three - and in true Frakes fashion, probably told us more than he should have. When asked to confirm his directing of three episodes this season, Frakes gave away some plot beats, saying ”Yes, I did. I actually just rewatched 303 a couple of days ago. Season three is really wonderful on Discovery, by the way. So the first episode is Michael Burnham alone in Iceland [for location shoot], which is a foreign land. And she meets “Book” [David Ajala]. The second episode is the entire crew on Discovery. And the third episode, which is the one I was fortunate enough to get, is their reunion. And it is very heavy on the emo.” Later in the interview, Frakes discussed Trek’s newest stars. He showered praise on Book actor David Ajala before moving on to the newly announced Blu del Barrio (Adira)). ”Blu is so well cast that as the character reveals themself, I think they’ll be a new favorite. Much like Tilly—do you remember how offbeat and non-Star Trek Tilly felt in the beginning? Blu brings a different dynamic and a different color totally, but a brand new color to the palette of the group. Much in the way Tig [Notaro] did.” Star Trek: Discovery’s Pilot Doesn’t Soar on CBS In episode 476 of Priority One - released on September 4th - we told you about Star Trek: Discovery’s re-airing of its pilot - “The Vulcan Hello”. Want to know how that went? Are you sure? “The Vulcan Hello”, which originally aired on September 24, 2017, was repeated for terrestrial television audiences exactly three years later - September 24, 2020. Back in 2017, the series premiere - which aired at 8:30pm EST - pulled in a solid 9.5 million same-day-viewers, according to USA Today. Three years later, Variety reported  that viewership had dropped to a disappointing 1.7 million viewers, losing out to ABC’s season 5 premiere of “The Match Game” (2.9 million viewers). So what does that mean? Well, right now, it only means that “The Vulcan Hello” had 1.7 million viewers.  The three year old episode was, as mentioned previously, a repeat - even to Network television viewers. There’s no need to panic. Right? H. Jon Benjamin Talks Tribbles One of Star Trek’s most divisive episodes seems to be the Season 2 episode of “Short Treks” titled “The Trouble With Edward”. From the IMDB summary “Newly minted Captain Lynne Lucero is excited to take command of the U.S.S. Cabot. That is, until she meets Edward Larkin, an ornery scientist who believes he has found a revolutionary new use for tribbles.” You remember Larkin, right? The guy who wanted to breed Tribbles for food. That Edward Larkin. This week, Edward Larkin himself - H. Jon Benjamin - did absolutely nothing to ingratiate himself with the episode detractors. Benjamin sat down with telegram.com to talk about Bob’s Burgers, Archer, and “The Trouble With Edward”. Benjamin admitted to report Craig S. Semon ”I never thought I would make it in the ‘Star Trek’ universe but I did.  I was a ‘Star Trek’ fan when I was a kid. It was really cool. I was thrilled to be asked.” On playing the - unique - character, Benjamin said ”It wasn’t particularly hard to play that guy, because he was oblivious. I’m not sure he knew how despicable he was. So that was the fun of it. From what I gathered, there are some ‘Star Trek’ fans that took issue with that the way tribbles were discovered. People get very deep into everything working perfectly or logically based on the ‘Star Trek’ universe. Maybe that was a problem, but that’s not my problem.” Finally, Benjamin addressed the fact that he may have been the first person to eat a Tribble, saying ”That’s true. But you never know. You never know if Scotty drunk ate one.” Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Cryptic Studios Announces Collaboration with Gameheads This week, it was announced that Cryptic Studios - the game development studio that designs Neverwinter, Champions Online, the upcoming Magic: Legends, and -- of course -- Star Trek Online --- has teamed up with a local organization called Gameheads. What’s important about this particular nonprofit organization, is that it welcomes low-income youth and youth of color between the ages of 15 to 24 in the Bay Area into a program that trains them in video game design, development, and DevOps.  Together, these young adults will work with experienced game developers at Cryptic to  “provide discipline-specific discussions, panels, and presentations and mentor students in their desired fields, such as Environment Art, Level Design, or Narrative Design.” Additionally, Cryptic has made a financial donation to Gameheads as well as the NAACP Personally, I believe this is an excellent partnership. You see, there is substantial evidence that points to a systemically racial barrier that makes it incredibly difficult for low-income youth of color to move up and out of poverty. Additionally, there’s evidence establishing inherent racism in technology… and no, I’m not saying your toaster burns your toast cuz you’re Carribean. But, what I am saying is that current algorithms -- those that drive facial recognition technology for example -- have time and again misidentified individuals of color. You see, to the ghost in the machine, anyone who’s not white pretty much looks the same…. But, the thing is… that ghost is programmed by an industry led -- predominantly - by white people. So, helping students break into the tech industry is one positive way of ensuring that the tech industry remains inclusive and equitable… for the consumer and for developers.. A New Event! A New Event Prize Concept! By Shane Hoover In a blog posted Tuesday September 29th, Ambassador Kael announced an upcoming event to accompany the next Year of Klingon content release. This “Widening Gyre” event runs from October 6th through November 5th on PC. No details are provided yet about the Event itself, but the Grand Prize is breaking new ground for STO events. By completing 20 daily progress cycles in the Widening Gyre, Captains can obtain an entire 4 piece space equipment set, the Imperial Rift Space Set. So far details are scant on the set pieces, but the descriptions provided in the blog point toward a Science-based set that is trying to synergize control abilities with energy weapons. It’s too soon to give you a verdict on how we think it’ll perform, but stay tuned, Captains. Once the stats are released, you can bet we’ll be sharing our evaluations on the next show! It is said that reputation is everything. Ah, the daily grind. It’s just part of the MMO experience, right? You run the same missions over and over to gain a reward that takes days, months or years to complete. However, if you’re tired of grinding marks for another reputation system in STO, then you will be pleased with the latest news. You can now skip the grind. Well, you can skip some of the grind. Well, you can now skip some of the grind in one section of one part of the systems available to grind in STO.  Now available for purchase -  a Tier V Reputation buyout from the Zen store.  Starting at 3,000 Zen, you can pass go and proceed immediately to Tier V for a single reputation on a single character. Although, the price is reduced proportionately, depending on how much progress in that reputation you’ve already made. For example, if you’ve made it to Tier 3 and just are not able or willing to continue earning those marks and running the daily project, then the price of 3,000 zen is reduced proportionately. Keep in mind, if you thought you were getting around the grind - ha - nope. You will still have to spend at least 60 days getting to Tier 6. But, this is manageable with the Tier V mark reward amount, since you get at least 600 marks when you achieve Tier V - but you still have to run those daily projects What does this mean for you, the player - what type of player are you? New: Players new to the game should avoid this purchase as the process of leveling the reputation is something you will need to do anyway, unless you plan on buying it for all reputations, and even then, because this only goes up to tier 5 which isn’t even half the progress to tier 6.  Casual: Casual players may feel like this is a decent deal, skipping what seems like a significant in-game time sink. But if you consider yourself a casual player, 3000 Zen is probably not a small investment for you, and that can get you things you’ll use to play the game. Like an account-wide T6 ship, for instance. And if you’re paying to avoid playing the game, then...is this really the hobby for you? Experienced: Experienced players will have a better understanding of exactly what they are getting out of the purchase and be better placed to evaluate if it’s worth the price to skip ahead a little. But in general? No. No player should purchase this.  Elite: Honestly, this seems like it’d be heresy to an elite player. Who already has all their reps finished anyway. Rainbow Tribbles, Because We’re Better Together By Thomas Reynolds Well, captains, the 2020 Summer Event has come and gone like a beautiful Risian sunset. You know, back when Risa had sunsets. And while we’ve all enjoyed our fast ships and fabulous costumes, there’s one event item that’s snuck in under the tachyon grid and into our hearts. The Rainbow Tribble grants you a 2.5% critical chance in ground combat when you pet it. That in itself is pretty good--but it stacks with each active Rainbow Tribble on your team. Hand one out to everyone on your away team, and you’ll be looking at a 12.5% crit chance buff to every team member. Rainbow Tribbles go for 50 Lohlunat Favors from the event store, or 1 million EC on the exchange at the time of writing--a pittance for this kind of power. OTHER GAMING NEWS Star Trek Adventures: The Blog of Dev So you backed the Humble Bundle. You have hundreds of dollars’ worth of prime Star Trek roleplaying material at your fingertips. Great. Now what? Well don’t worry, Modiphius has you covered. Posted on September 23rd, the first post of 2d20 developer Nathan Dowdell’s blog series will walk you through the basic concepts of Star Trek Adventures character creation. Much of it will look familiar to anyone who’s played RPGs in the past (you say “proficiencies,” I say “disciplines”). But it’s definitely encouraged reading, whether this is your first time on the Final Frontier or you’re back for more glorious battles.

You see, there is substantial evidence that points to a systemically racial barrier that makes it incredibly difficult for low-income youth of color to move up and out of poverty. Additionally, there's evidence establishing inherent racism in technology… and no, I'm not saying your toaster burns your toast cuz you're Carribean. But, what I am saying is that current algorithms -- those that drive facial recognition technology for example -- have time and again misidentified individuals of color. You see, to the ghost in the machine, anyone who's not white pretty much looks the same…. It's too soon to give you a verdict on how we think it'll perform, but stay tuned, Captains. Once the stats are released, you can bet we'll be sharing our evaluations on the next show! It is said that reputation is everything. Ah, the daily grind. It's just part of the MMO experience, right? You run the same missions over and over to gain a reward that takes days, months or years to complete. However, if you're tired of grinding marks for another reputation system in STO, then you will be pleased with the latest news. Although, the price is reduced proportionately, depending on how much progress in that reputation you've already made. For example, if you've made it to Tier 3 and just are not able or willing to continue earning those marks and running the daily project, then the price of 3,000 zen is reduced proportionately. New: Players new to the game should avoid this purchase as the process of leveling the reputation is something you will need to do anyway, unless you plan on buying it for all reputations, and even then, because this only goes up to tier 5 which isn't even half the progress to tier 6.  Casual: Casual players may feel like this is a decent deal, skipping what seems like a significant in-game time sink. But if you consider yourself a casual player, 3000 Zen is probably not a small investment for you, and that can get you things you'll use to play the game. Like an account-wide T6 ship, for instance. And if you're paying to avoid playing the game, then...is this really the hobby for you? Experienced: Experienced players will have a better understanding of exactly what they are getting out of the purchase and be better placed to evaluate if it's worth the price to skip ahead a little. But in general? No. No player should purchase this.  Elite: Honestly, this seems like it'd be heresy to an elite player. Who already has all their reps finished anyway. Rainbow Tribbles, Because We're Better Together By Thomas Reynolds Well, captains, the 2020 Summer Event has come and gone like a beautiful Risian sunset. You know, back when Risa had sunsets. And while we've all enjoyed our fast ships and fabulous costumes, there's one event item that's snuck in under the tachyon grid and into our hearts. The Rainbow Tribble grants you a 2.5% critical chance in ground combat when you pet it. That in itself is pretty good--but it stacks with each active Rainbow Tribble on your team. Hand one out to everyone on your away team, and you'll be looking at a 12.5% crit chance buff to every team member. You have hundreds of dollars' worth of prime Star Trek roleplaying material at your fingertips. Great. Now what? Well don't worry, Modiphius has you covered. Posted on September 23rd, the first post of 2d20 developer Nathan Dowdell's blog series will walk you through the basic concepts of Star Trek Adventures character creation. In Star Trek gaming, we talk Timelines “Someone Like Me” event, A Roddenberry Recovery Mission in Sansar, and Andrew Looney of LooneyLabs to talk about updates to the game Star Trek: Fluxx. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ:  Do you want to see Picard rekindle his romance with Dr. Crusher? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan The Captain and Superman Discuss Careers I'm about to get controversial, so buckle up. Star Trek is the best Sci-Fi Franchise - and Superman is the best Superhero. Better than Captain America, Spider-man, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and even Batman. Now I, the writer of this segment - Jake Morgan - know that Elio is not going to read that. But I tried. Anywho, imagine our excitement when we learned that Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Kal-El would sit down to interview one another! This week, on Variety's “Actors on Actors”, Sir Patrick Stewart and Henry Cavill met through the magic of modern technology to talk about their lives, careers, and Cavill's first time meeting the legendary thespian. The pair discussed their love of being on-stage, playing someone other than themselves, and Stewart recounted how his early experiences at the Bristol Old Vic Theater school  translated into the ensemble elements of Star Trek: The Next Generation ”I had been thought of as being a bit weird where I was growing up because I wanted to act. To my friends, it was just I was a show off and that was all. And it wasn't true, there were other reasons. But then to find a whole community - a society of people who felt just like me. And I think it's one of the reasons why I've come to love companies so much. Whether it's on stage, or doing a show like Picard or Next Generation. We were a company. I continually insisted that we should think of ourselves as an ensemble. There wasn't just Jean-Luc Picard sitting in the Captain's chair, but we were a group who were all united in doing one thing.” Stewart discussed his role of Co-Executive Producer on Star Trek: Picard, and after admitting he wasn't a writer, did give Cavill some insight on how he contributed to Picard. ”I loved being in that room. I wish that I could have recorded every moment that I sat with our writers. But the only things I think that I actually contributed in terms of dialogue were jokes. We had a piece about one of the other characters, he's reading a very famous - I think an Asimov book. A Science Fiction book. And I said ‘you know I can never really get into Science Fiction, it didn't mean anything to me.' To have Captain Picard talking about Science Fiction as though it was an alien concept was something which I really enjoyed. And ‘Tea, Earl Grey, Decaf was my idea as well, because I thought it was time to have some jokes from the Captain.” The conversation is a little over an hour, and covers Stewarts praise for his Picard co-stars, strolls down memory lane, and his love for Sir Ian Mckellen. If you didn't love Henry Cavill and Sir Patrick before the video, you certainly will after. We highly suggest giving it a watch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TcFBP_M31Y Stewart Talks to TV Guide Sir Patrick was busy this week. On June 24th, the 79 year old Picard-Portrayer spoke with TV Guide about Star Trek, naughty words, and the importance of activism. Stewart talked about the use of profanity in Star Trek's newest offerings, and his reaction to first reading the vulgarity in Picard's script 'I think that Picard had actually taken an active decision not to abuse language that would be unpleasant for people to hear whether it is abusive or offensive in some way, and he stuck to it. Even if he wanted to say, "Damn, blast," or whatever, he would, for the most part, manage to deny himself that pleasure. When I came across the first swear word in the first script, I can honestly tell you, I was deeply shocked. I grew up in a family where swearing was second nature. Every other word was a swear word, and yet when I read... it might have been the F-word that I read and I was shocked and unsettled by it. I think I did have a conversation with Michael [Chabon] about this use of language and how comfortable were we with it. It was something that had never been a part of previous Star Trek.“' Stewart moved on to more important issues, discussing the necessity of youth activism and the heroism of those involved. ”there are so many ways in which we've recently seen this illustrated. The young woman, the teenager, who held her telephone camera up long enough so that the horror of what was being done to that poor man [George Floyd] whose neck was being knelt on. It was a young woman [Darnella Frazier] who brought that to us.  Our world environmental hero is a young woman [Greta Thunberg], at the moment, and that is going to continue as well. [...] we are seeing examples of social commitment and of opposition to all forms of racism. It is one of the few things that I do find encouraging about our society today.” Gates McFadden Coming to Picard? Wherefore art thou, Doctor Beverly Crusher? The Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer and on-again-off-again love interest of Captain Jean-Luc Picard was a glaring omission in Picards first season. According to Dr. Crusher, or should we say Gates McFadden, that may change! Speaking with Trekmovie.com on Monday June 29th, McFadden not-so-coyly indicated that she may reprise her role in Picard season 2, saying ”Well, I don't know. There's a good chance, let's put it that way. But I have no contract signed.” McFadden also talked about Crusher's aforementioned relationship with Picard, recalling ”The character [had] become matron-like, and it was just weird. I was no longer really the love interest of Picard and that was one of the primary things—I was hired by Gene [Roddenberry] himself as the love interest of Picard. That got changed. And that wasn't changed by me.”. But could we see Gene's vision of a Picard-Crusher ‘ship' come back?  McFadden isn't so sure  ”I think that Patrick made a decision at some point that he was opening it up to other relationships in our show, and in the movies, certainly. So I can't imagine that it's suddenly going to be different, but it doesn't mean that there's not a relationship there. Obviously, from all of our scenes, there is a relationship and that's great. So who knows? I have no clue, but it would be lovely.” Shatner Ends 100 Day Captain's Logs Way back on March 18th, William Shatner shared a very Star Trek tweet with the world - a Captain's log. After One Hundred days of logs, Shatner decided to call off the popular thread in a very - familiar way. On June 27th, the Twitter mainstay posted. https://twitter.com/WilliamShatner/status/1276882370117812227 If you'll recall, that was a reasonable facsimile of the line uttered by Captain James T. Kirk following his untimely demise in Star Trek: Generations. Rest assured, there haven't been any reports of Shatner being crushed by a bridge...we checked just to be sure! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8_oqgPwHfI Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds It's been three weeks since our call to action and Cryptic Studios has not yet responded in any way. Until that time, we cannot, in good conscience, continue to endorse a company that holds a Star Trek license and has endeavored to support other worthy causes in the past but, will not commit to actionable goals towards inclusivity, equitability, and social justice. Star Trek Timelines Event: “Someone Like Me” Star Trek Timelines' “Ripples & Waves” Mega-Event comes to a close with “Someone Like Me,” running from July 2nd to July 9th. This Hybrid Galaxy/Skirmish Event will give the returning 5-star Desert Archer as its Ranked Reward crewmember. Event crew includes last week's 5-star Krenim Guest Chakotay, the new 5-star Ocampa Tanis as seen in the Voyager episode “Cold Fire,” and existing 4-star/7-year-ensign Rogue Harry Kim. Look for Chakotay variants, Kim variants, and Warp Theorist or Caregiver crew members to give small bonuses during the event's Galaxy phase. They'll then return medium bonuses in the Skirmish phase, featuring the new 5-star Krenim Weapon Ship, the returning 4-star USS Voyager, and the 2-star Madeleine...no wait, it's the 2-star Val Jean. A Roddenberry Recovery Mission If you're a veteran listener to our show, you've heard us mention the Roddenberry Nexus before. It's a Star Trek focused world within the Sansar virtual reality social platform. They've done great events like virtual fan engagements with insiders like Doug Drexler and Rod Roddenberry. They have an amazing, interactive Star Trek museum. Wait, there's a problem there, actually. Because according to a contest announcement we've just received, the Roddenberry Museum in Sansar has been a victim of a Rodden-Rob'erry! Here's what we're told: “An unidentified group broke into the Roddenberry Museum in Nexus and stole some of the items in our exhibit. We are not sure who did this or why. Our initial investigation has determined that they have hidden all of the items throughout the various worlds in Sansar. We are turning to you to aid us in the recovery of our collection. Considering the knowledge and talents of Roddenberry fans, we are confident that your abilities can help us return all the items to our museum where they belong.” How do we help, you ask? What's in it for me, you ask? I don't even own a VR system, you say? Well, let me stop you right there. For starters, you don't NEED VR to experience Sansar. Just head over to sansar.com, and download the Desktop Mode client. Then, stay tuned to Sansar and Roddenberry's social media outlets for clues! Each clue will guide you to a different world within Sansar, where the stolen items can be recovered. For the first three participants who find every stolen item, Roddenberry has some great prizes. So Captains, maybe brush up on your detective skills with “Elementary, Dear Data” and then get busy solving the case for Roddenberry! NOTE: The launch date for the event has been delayed but, be sure to follow @sansarofficial & @roddenberry for more information and upcoming announcements.

There’s a good chance, let’s put it that way. But I have no contract signed.” McFadden also talked about Crusher’s aforementioned relationship with Picard, recalling ”The character [had] become matron-like, and it was just weird. I was no longer really the love interest of Picard and that was one of the primary things—I was hired by Gene [Roddenberry] himself as the love interest of Picard. That got changed. And that wasn’t changed by me.”. But could we see Gene’s vision of a Picard-Crusher ‘ship’ come back?  McFadden isn’t so sure  ”I think that Patrick made a decision at some point that he was opening it up to other relationships in our show, and in the movies, certainly. So I can’t imagine that it’s suddenly going to be different, but it doesn’t mean that there’s not a relationship there. Obviously, from all of our scenes, there is a relationship and that’s great. So who knows? I have no clue, but it would be lovely.” Shatner Ends 100 Day Captain’s Logs Way back on March 18th, William Shatner shared a very Star Trek tweet with the world - a Captain’s log. After One Hundred days of logs, Shatner decided to call off the popular thread in a very - familiar way. On June 27th, the Twitter mainstay posted. https://twitter.com/WilliamShatner/status/1276882370117812227 If you’ll recall, that was a reasonable facsimile of the line uttered by Captain James T. Kirk following his untimely demise in Star Trek: Generations. Rest assured, there haven’t been any reports of Shatner being crushed by a bridge...we checked just to be sure! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8_oqgPwHfI Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds It's been three weeks since our call to action and Cryptic Studios has not yet responded in any way. Until that time, we cannot, in good conscience, continue to endorse a company that holds a Star Trek license and has endeavored to support other worthy causes in the past but, will not commit to actionable goals towards inclusivity, equitability, and social justice. Star Trek Timelines Event: “Someone Like Me” Star Trek Timelines’ “Ripples & Waves” Mega-Event comes to a close with “Someone Like Me,” running from July 2nd to July 9th. This Hybrid Galaxy/Skirmish Event will give the returning 5-star Desert Archer as its Ranked Reward crewmember. Event crew includes last week’s 5-star Krenim Guest Chakotay, the new 5-star Ocampa Tanis as seen in the Voyager episode “Cold Fire,” and existing 4-star/7-year-ensign Rogue Harry Kim. Look for Chakotay variants, Kim variants, and Warp Theorist or Caregiver crew members to give small bonuses during the event’s Galaxy phase. They’ll then return medium bonuses in the Skirmish phase, featuring the new 5-star Krenim Weapon Ship, the returning 4-star USS Voyager, and the 2-star Madeleine...no wait, it’s the 2-star Val Jean. A Roddenberry Recovery Mission If you’re a veteran listener to our show, you’ve heard us mention the Roddenberry Nexus before. It’s a Star Trek focused world within the Sansar virtual reality social platform. They’ve done great events like virtual fan engagements with insiders like Doug Drexler and Rod Roddenberry. They have an amazing, interactive Star Trek museum. Wait, there’s a problem there, actually. Because according to a contest announcement we’ve just received, the Roddenberry Museum in Sansar has been a victim of a Rodden-Rob’erry! Here’s what we’re told: “An unidentified group broke into the Roddenberry Museum in Nexus and stole some of the items in our exhibit. What’s in it for me, you ask? I don’t even own a VR system, you say? Well, let me stop you right there. For starters, you don’t NEED VR to experience Sansar. Just head over to sansar.com, and download the Desktop Mode client. Then, stay tuned to Sansar and Roddenberry’s social media outlets for clues!

This week on Episode 465 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' Culber's focus on mental health, Goldsman's tease of Picard season 2, Jack Quaid's initiation into Trek-stardom, Gossipy-Gossip, and a teeny-tiny set! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ:  Are you excited to see more “Starfleet” in season 2 of “Picard”, or would you prefer the second season to focus on something else entirely? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Wilson Cruz on Culber's Mental Health What would it feel like to be resurrected - Pulled from the clutches of death, returned into the land of the living? The wholly unusual event must be disconcerting - being one of the few people pulled from eternal oblivion. Just ask Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Worf, Wesley Crusher, Janeway, Picard - or Dr.Hugh Culber. Wilson Cruz, the actor who portrays the resurrected Doctor - Culber not McCoy - discussed the effects of breathing again with Yahoo Entertainment's “The Talk”. Cruz told “The Talk” that he didn't originally know his character was going to be killed, but was glad to receive a call shortly after to reprise the role. During those conversations, Cruz made it clear that he didn't want Culber's death to be meaningless “So many times we see these LGBQ characters, especially gay characters, killed off on our series, and there's no cost. It's as if it never happened. And I wanted there to be growth in this. He needed to learn something from it, we all did. So, I was excited about the epic way he was brought back” Cruz continued, dropping a few hints about what to expect in Discovery's third season ”I'm more excited about how he's grown in season 3 - how he's used this experience to kind of inform the way that he works on the ship. And so, we'll see more of how he works as a doctor, but also how he's taking into consideration mental health.” Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard's Second Season Wilson Cruz wasn't the only Trek-insider to talk about the future of a Star Trek series. Writer, Director, Show runner, and now prolific video interviewee Akiva Goldsman discussed Star Trek: Picard's first season, and what we may expect going forward. Goldsman told IndieWire's Christian Blauvelt that the introduction of Altan Inigo Soong, played by the incomparable Brent Spiner, served a bigger purpose than simply moving the narrative. ”We knew that this Soong character had been in our head canon when it came to the season, anyway. But, you know, we want more Brent, and we wanted to create a platform for which there could be more Brent in ensuing seasons” In regards to the introduction of the Riker-led Starfleet Armada in "Et in Arcadia Ego — part II," Goldsman acknowledged ”We knew that bringing in that fleet was a little bit of a promise, and so we tried to be thoughtful about it”. The video interview ends there, but in the article that accompanies the video, Goldsman is quoted as saying ”Especially as we go forward, we're going to start making statements about really what the world of Starfleet, at least technologically if not socially and culturally … These are the things that are likely to get a little bit more play than they did [in Season 1] in what was essentially a story about somebody who is outside of Starfleet.” For more on the development of Picard's first season, including the inspiration for the 2390's ship design, be sure to trek out the link in our show notes. Jack Quaid Describes “Lower Decks” If you're involved in Trek, no matter what else you are working on or promoting, you WILL talk about your Trek involvement - and Jack Quaid had his first lesson in this. The star of the upcoming animated comedy “Lower Decks” sat down with Entertainment publication Gold Derby to promote season 2 of the popular Amazon Prime series, “The Boys” - and as sure as the sun rises, Star Trek was addressed. Quaid, who plays “Lower Decks” Ensign Brad Boimler, admitted he wasn't sure about a release date, telling Gold Derby ”I don't know when it's coming out. I know I've recorded most of my stuff for it but it's a new “Star Trek” show, it's animated, it's from Mike McMahan, who's one of the writers on “Rick and Morty” and he's frickin' hilarious.” Like the aforementioned McMahon, Quiad stressed the comedy is for both trek fans - like self-proclaimed “trek nerd”, Gold Derby reporter Kevin Jacobsen - and non-trek fans ”If you are a huge “Star Trek” nerd[...]you're gonna get a lot of the references and a lot of the deep cut jokes, but I think even if you're new to it, I think it's something really cool to introduce you to the “Star Trek” universe as well. Me speaking personally, I didn't know a ton about it when I got cast. I had seen the J.J. Abrams movies but now I'm into it.” Kirk-shipping May Be Canon? You want gossip, Captains? You've got it. We head back to the questionable “WeGotThisCovered” for our next story, so be sure not to take this Gossip as Gospel. If you'll remember back in episode 460 of Priority One, we told you about the RUMORED casting of a young James T. Kirk for the upcoming Pike/Spock/Number 1 series, “Strange New Worlds”.  This week, WeGotThisCovered has doubled down on the rumor, claiming that not only are they casting Kirk for the series, but he may be Bisexual. According to the site ”Trusted insider Daniel Richtman has revealed on Twitter that sources are telling him Kirk could end up being portrayed as bisexual in SNW.” https://twitter.com/DanielRPK/status/1271905503678009344 You may be surprised to find out that the Original Kirk - William Shatner - had an opinion on the matter. On June 14th, Shatner TWEETED ”I suppose some of you want my reaction to the article from the “never heard of them before & clickbait rules” site on their scoop on bisexual Kirk? If @CBS,@Alex_Kurtzman & @Startrek decide  to make Kirk bisexual to align with cancel culture presentism; then it's OK

Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Will you be purchasing tickets for Star Trek Las Vegas 2020? AND CQ: Will you be purchasing “La Sirena” in Star Trek Online? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Jonathan Frakes Talks With ComicBook.com These are trying times. It’s easy to feel lost and confused. Empty. But stay strong, this won’t last forever. Star Trek will RETURN! To help ease our no-new-Star-Trek-blues, ComicBook.com’s Jamie Lovett delivered a video interview with the iconic Jonathan Frakes. Spoiler alert - if you haven’t seen Star Trek: Discovery or Picard, go watch them.  We’ll wait. Okay, good. Frakes and Lovett discussed the state of Star Trek and the tonal shift  Discovery will be experiencing in season 3. ’’At the end of season two, we flash-forwarded I think 930 years. Michael Burnham has found a new core, not to mention a new partner in crime. So again, there's a big tonal shift on that show, less driven by the pain and guilt of her past and more about the magical reunification of the Discovery crew and wherever she went off to.[...] So those two things coming back together is very much the theme, and how grateful everyone is and what's next. It's got a lot of action-adventure and not so much pain." Frakes also talked about getting back in the center seat in Picard’s season 1 finale, 'Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2’ "That was a really different experience because I was alone. I was 'self-directing.' I was in a captain's chair. I had a spacesuit on. I had my beard trimmed, my Riker hair put back on, my bald spots covered up. It felt very familiar, and it was like a flashback. Because of how well 'Nepenthe' went, I was less nervous and, I got to say, thrilled to have been asked back, to be perfectly frank." STLV Tickets On Sale, To The Surprise of Many On April 17th, San Diego Comic Con announced that its 2020 convention - which was set to kick off July 23rd and run until July 26th - was cancelled. The news shook geekdom, but it was not terribly surprising, and most considered the move responsible. But what of the official Star Trek Las Vegas convention set to run just two weeks after the now-cancelled SDCC? Surely that would be cancelled too?  Right? Right?!? . Wrong. For now, anyway. In an update posted to their web page and social media outlets, Creation released in part ”We hope you have been staying safe and healthy during this challenging time. While Creation has been social distancing as a team, we are still working hard to make the upcoming Official Star Trek Convention a grand celebration of Gene Roddenberry’s legacy for a hopeful future.  The event is set for August 5-9, 2020 at The Rio All-Suites Resort and Casino in fabulous Las Vegas[...]As something to look forward to this summer, we can’t wait to spend another truly intergalactic time in Vegas! Your devoted Trekker friends at Creation Entertainment” The announcement was met with a wide variety of reactions, with most questioning the motives of the move. What do you think? Chris Pine In Talks to Reboot “The Saint” It’s been a while since we’ve discussed a possible Star Trek movie, and this story might be a reach, but it’s worth mentioning. On April 21st, Variety broke the story that Chris Pine - JJ’s Captain Kirk - was in negotiations to star in Paramount’s reboot of “The Saint”. “The Saint” is a 1920’s book series, written by Leslie Charteris, featuring a Robin Hood-esq hero named Simon Templar. But the books, and their screen adaptations - starring Roger Moore and Val Kilmer - aren’t  the real story here. This is ”Paramount and Pine have had strong ties for many years. Their relationship goes back to 2009 when the studio hired him to play Captain Kirk in the latest “Star Trek” franchise, launching his career as a leading man in the process. While the fourth “Star Trek” film is still being developed, the studio saw “The Saint” as the perfect role for Pine as they wait for that script to be finished.”. Does this confirm that Noah Hawley’s Trek will star the Kelvin cast or is the reporter speculating? Only time will tell! Star Trek Cast Talks Binging You’ve watched every Star Trek series. On Tuesday, March 28th, Ambassador Kael posted a blog announcing the release of the T6 “La Sirena” Heavy Raider. The ship reproduces in great detail Captain Cristóbal Rios’ La Sirena. However, Cryptic Lead Artist Thomas Marrone pointed out in a tweet that “The STO version is not the same exact type of ship as the original La Sirena. It's significantly bigger, about 30-40 meters longer, so that it can be considered a "capital ship" in STO. You'll notice we scaled the window down to illustrate this.” There are a number of interesting points to the stats and capabilities of this new ship. For starters, the ship has only four Bridge Officer seats, but two of these are Commander seats. As a heavy raider, the ship has a 5 forward weapon  but, only a 1 aft weapon, with an Experimental Weapon slot and Improved Raider Flanking. Then, we look On Screen to episode 7 of Star Trek Picard - Nepenthe Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you plan on using the Vulcan Salute as your new DEFACTO greeting? Have you been using it already? AND CQ: What do you think a new summer event Risian Science Ship should look like? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Michael Chabon Heads Back To - Or Stays On - Instagram Just as he has the previous two weeks, Picard season 1 showrunner - Michael Chabon - answered fans burning questions on Instagram Live. As in previous iterations of the quick-scrolling Q&A, Chabon had some fun things to say, some insightful thoughts, and a ton of information about Star Trek's newest series. Be advised, from this point forward - spoilers a-plenty are in bound. As you'd likely guess, many questions arose about this week's guest stars - Riker and Troi. When asked about Riker's reserve status, Chabon responded ”He retired from active duty when he was still captain of the *Titan*. Were he ever to be called up to active service, he would presumably retain that rank.”. Chabon later told a fan that much of Riker and Troi's backstory never made it to the screen, and the Titan was referenced but later dropped for reasons Chabon could not recall. In regards to why Riker and Troi left active duty, Chabon said ”Riker and Troi made the obvious but painful choice to go on inactive states and move to Nepenthe, for the sake of their family and their child's life” In regards to why Emergency Holograms were not included in the Synth Ban, Chabon said ”It was certainly debated by Federation policy makers, but a distinction was drawn, possibly because some failsafes and limitations had already been put in place, in the wake of the experience with *Voyager*'s Doctor.” Finally, Chabon explained the killing of Hugh...sort of One of the stories we are telling in this season on Picard is a story about the tragedy of being Borg, or more precisely, of being assimilated and then, even more poignantly, being restored from assimilation and struggling forever after with assimilation's traumatic legacy. In a very unique way, Hugh was able to recontextualize his trauma into something that brought healing and hope to others, which gave purpose and brought healing to himself. But his predicament, like that of all former Borg-as he explained to Picard in episode 106-remained essentially tragic, and tragically is how he dies, cut down by someone who sees him as a disgusting monster at the moment when he makes his boldest claim to dignity and freedom. Michael Chabon Talks Nepenthe Chabon doesn't only do it for the Insta - Q&A's that is. He also sat down with The Hollywood Reporter this week to talk Picard, and more specifically, “Nepenthe”. Chabon spoke about the reunion of Picard and the Troi-Riker's, and about the tense moment Picard had with Deanna ”When you're in the scene, and knowing who [Riker and Troi] are, and who they have been, and trying to project them forward into a narrative that feels believable — and incorporate some of the themes of this show, like reckoning with the past, if you're a fan of the show, this interaction — it's necessary. It's not expected, but it's important to the character of Picard to have this moment.” He continues ”When someone calls you out on your [EXPLETIVE] like that? On the things you're dealing with and not acknowledging that you should acknowledge? To me, that's the definition of a friend” Chabon also admitted to THR that Hugh, and another former Borg - Icheb, were not originally planned for the series. The Showrunner said of Hugh ”The initial germ of having Hugh involved, and that he would die came from the natural discussions of, what does it mean to have been Borg? So once we sort of committed to a big part of our season being about the lives of former Borg — Ex Bs, as we call them — and exploring how their lives are traumatized [from that experience], how they have or have not dealt with that trauma, and how they remain these objects of fear and hatred even though they were victimized by the Borg, to put Hugh in the center of that lead to what felt like a dramatic way to service the character's end.” Jonathan Del Arco On Hugh's Death Michael Chabon wasn't the only Star Trek insider to defend the death of our beloved Hugh. Jonathan Del Arco, the man behind the cybernetics, sat down with Jordan Hoffman to discuss Hugh's ultimate sacrifice. “Well, it's really important in the show - in the world. Because the world of the show is dystopian, and very few people are willing to put themselves on the line for each other. There's a need for that sort of connectivity and self sacrifice. So honored to have died for Picard.” Del Arco went on to explain how the news of Hugh's demise affected the way the actor saw the role, saying “Actually it was very liberating. [...] When you start a new series, you're always trying to like - not play it safe - but you're trying to do things that are not going to upset anybody. And actually this kind of blew the lid off that for me as an actor, and I was just like ‘I'm just going to go for it' and really making bold choices, as an actor. So it was a really fun experiment that way.” For a link to the StarTrek.com interview, trek out our show notes! Star Trek VS The Covid-19 Virus With the increasing risk of Covid-19, more colloquially known as the Coronavirus, the US Center for Disease Control has issued a few tips on how to protect yourself - including avoiding close contact with others and proper handwashing techniques...and Star Trek may be able to help with both! On March 2nd, former presidential hopeful and founder of “Humanity Forward” Andrew Yang tweeted a photo of Leonard Nimoy's Spock doing the Vulcan salute, saying “I hate to say this - I'm not much of a germophobe myself - but we might want to work on a personal greeting that doesn't involve physical contact.”. Sound crazy? The US Government doesn't think so. In a closed door meeting of the House Democratic caucus on Tuesday morning, an attending physician suggested the avoidance of touching - and offered the Vulcan Salute as an alternative . From the CNN article /”Hand-to-hand contact is to be avoided, the physician said. The physician encouraged lawmakers to use the "Star Trek" greeting, according to Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, though he noted with a laugh he was unable to separate his fingers to properly make the gesture”. Okay, so we've avoided the close contact thing...but what about proper handwashing? Well, according to the CDC, you should be washing your hands often - and for at least 20 seconds. You know what else takes about 20 seconds? Quoting the opening to Star Trek. The brilliant realization was tweeted out by our friends at Roddenberry, with the caption ”We didn't make it up. #roddenberry #coronavirus”. So wash your hands until you get to “Where No One Has Gone Before”! Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover STO Legendary Bundle News There's good bundle news and there's bad bundle news, Captains.  Bad news - the Star Trek Online Legendary +Starship Bundle is no longer available for purchase by PC players. For those who purchased the bundle already, you'll still be able to reclaim the ships from the C-Store. For those who did not, you'll have to wait for the ships or the bundle to eventually return. Good news - if you're a console STO player, you'll be able to purchase the Legendary Starship Bundle yourself in less than a month. In a Twitter post dated March 8th, Star Trek Online announced the bundle would hit consoles in exactly 30 days. So save up those strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum, and get your best builds ready to go, console Captains. Summer Ship Development, Live on Camera! On Tuesday morning, Ambassador Kael posted an interesting new article to the STO News blog. With the 2020 Summer Event already on the team's mind, they've decided to let players in on the creative process. On four weekly community live streams between March 11th and April 1st, members of the Cryptic development team will appear on-stream. As Kael's blog says, "They'll be coached by a member of our ship design team or our concept artist, and all four of them will be assigned the same basic concept: a Risian Science Ship. For the next two hours, they'll hand draw a design for a ship based on that concept." The schedule of team members appearing will be: March 11th - Senior Environment Artist Nick Duguid March 18th - Test Analyst Christian Griffith March 25th - Senior Content Designer Jesse Heinig April 1st - Systems Designer Jonathan Herlache Once the concept designs are all completed, the four drawings will be presented to players to vote on their favorite. Then one more live stream will be dedicated to watching official Concept Artist Hector Ortiz turn the winner into a finalized Star Trek Online ship concept drawing. Tune in to those weekly livestreams on Cryptic Studios' Twitch channel at “twitch.tv/CrypticStudios”. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium.  Epsilon Fleet - kicked off it's first Tier V colony upgrade. The House of Martok 3rd Tier V Colony is available - just needs provisions and dilithium. WEEKLY TOP TIP Suppose you've been playing the game for a good while now, and you've finally hit Tier 6 completion in at least a handful of those Reputations. You're a little bored, and you'd like to spice up the game with a fun new ship… but you don't want to spend your cash or convert your Dilithium stash to Zen. You don't even really care all that much about a new ship trait, because the trait on the ship you want won't fit your build. All you've got to do is remember to visit the Ship Vendor in your favorite social hub. In the Ship Vendor UI, just filter the ship list to rank “Fleet - Tier 6”. Pick out a T6 Fleet ship you're itching to try.  Make sure you've claimed at least 5 Fleet Ship Modules as T6 Reputation rewards, for 100 rep marks each. Then go ahead and buy that T6 Fleet ship for just 20,000 Fleet Credits, plus your 5 Fleet Ship Modules. Since the modules obtained as Rep rewards are Character bound, they're only useful for Fleet Ship purchases, anyway. And 13 modules is more than most Captains will need to upgrade their favorite C-Store ships to Fleet standard. Remember, of course, that Fleet ships purchased through the Ship Vendor are not account-wide unlocks -- and you won't enjoy their maxed mastery trait. But it's a great way to try out that one ship you've always been curious about without getting too invested. Other Gaming News Tilting Point Buys Timelines Wait! Timelines change imminent! According to a Press Release on VentureBeat.com, mobile game operator Tilting Point has acquired the Star Trek: Timelines title from Disruptor Beam. In support of the new acquisition, Tilting Point announced the formation of a new studio, Wicked Realm Games, along with the hiring of 19 team members from Disruptor Beam. Meanwhile, Disruptor Beam will focus on its proprietary free-to-play gaming engine.  Tilting Point has been partnered with Disruptor Beam on Timelines since offering user acquisition funding in 2017. Speaking in an interview, Tilting Point CEO Kevin Segalla said “We're very excited about this acquisition of Star Trek: Timelines. It's a phenomenal game. And we see an opportunity to take the game and add more resources to help make it better. We've extended the license on it, and we're adding new content, including the newest show Star Trek: Picard, which is great.”

Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: What did you think of Michael Chabon’s video? Did he answer your big questions? AND CQ: What did you think of the third episode of Star Trek Picard TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Michael Chabon Takes Questions Star Trek: Picard writer, Michael Chabon, took to Instagram this week to respond to some of the more critical questions regarding the show’s first episodes.  A three minute video posted by the Pulitzer Prize winning author begins simply “You’re a Star Trek fan watching Star Trek: Picard. You have questions.” We’ll dive deeper into the contents of his video later during our On Screen segment. But let’s consider a couple of highlights. Fundamentally, Chabon’s comments seem to reinforce the idea that most complaints from viewers are not, in fact, oversights, but are deliberate choices made in the writing. The author further engaged with viewers who commented on the Instagram post itself. While many commenters on his post tried to convince Chabon to reveal story details, one of his replies sums up the reality, saying, “My friend, I would LOVE to tell you everything that’s coming, and let you down early about everything that isn’t, but you and I know that’s just not how the game is played. I didn’t invent the rules, and I’m not totally sure I even really understand them. I, for one, HATE surprises, but there it is. Stay tuned!” He also gave a simple reply to one viewer’s disappointment with Picard, saying “Sorry it’s not working for you! We tried our best. Fortunately there are a lot of other shows out there, and of course all the earlier Trek series are still there waiting for you” Bo Yeon Kim Interview Star Trek: Discovery writer and producer, Bo Yeon Kim, sat down this week with local news channel Spectrum News in Southern California. Kim discussed her early life as the daughter of a diplomat, growing up in cities around the world, as well as the role of her Korean heritage in shaping the stories she tells. Having long questioned her own cultural identity, she says she now actively embraces her diversity as a source of creativity. She also wants to model that diversity for other writers, saying “I think one of the reasons why I am vocal on social media and I keep my Korean name, as opposed to having a more anglicized name, is because I want to show writers coming after me that you can write science fiction. You can write genre stories as a woman, as a person of color, as someone coming from an unusual background because this is the place to tell those kinds of stories.” She also specifically credits the role diversity writing programs played in shaping her career. She found that these programs forced interactions and community building that helped get her writing into the right hands. She says that if she hadn’t applied for those programs, she wouldn’t be where she is today, about to become co-Showrunner of the forthcoming Section 31 Star Trek series featuring Michelle Yeoh. ViacomCBS Plans New Streaming Service Speaking of forthcoming Star Trek streaming shows, the newly merged media giant ViacomCBS has plans to roll out a new streaming service.  The new offering will combine the assets of their existing services like CBS: All Access, Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures. The service is expected to be offered in both a premium ad-free version and a less expensive version with advertisements. CBS: All Access joined the streaming landscape in October 2014, bringing us the new Star Trek shows Discovery and Picard, as well as Short Treks. The new combined streaming service will likely also be home to Star Trek’s previously announced animated show in partnership with Nickelodeon. The service will also offer the big screen Star Trek properties held by Paramount Pictures. There are no details yet on how existing CBS All Access subscribers might transition to the new service. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Anthony Cox Star Trek Online’s 10th Anniversary Continues to Make Headlines Star Trek has endured for almost 55 years, so to us trekkies and trekkers, Star Trek Online celebrating its 10th anniversary seems like a very small step towards what is sure to be a long tenure. However, in the gaming world, celebrating 10 years for a continuously running game is something of a small miracle. The gaming news media continues to showcase Cryptic’s accomplishments. This week gamesindustry.biz pointed out, “In a decade when many licensed MMOs struggled and died… Cryptic Studios’ voyage to the final frontier has survived.” The interview with Star Trek Online’s lead designer, Al “Captain Gecko” Rivera, goes on to touch on all the reasons why Star Trek Online has thrived as an MMO. The main themes of the interview seemed to be planning and balancing. Whether that’s having a plan for future story content and then pivoting to a new plan, or balancing the needs of the many, the vast audience of all MMO games, with the few, or the one collective of Trek fans who also play video games. One thing is certain Rivera pointed out, “… that doesn’t mean we sacrifice story. Most of our missions could be episodes in the television show.” For a link to the full article, be sure to trek out the link in our show notes. Admiralty Ships Can Now Be Claimed Automatically Once a Captain gets that coveted promotion to Fleet Admiral they are put in command of an entire fleet of their starships. Unfortunately, without a slew of ship slots or a massive drydock, it’s tough to claim all your C-store ships. Especially if you start a new character. That is, until this past week. Players on both PC and console can now auto-claim their Admiralty cards by simply talking to the ship selection contact. Nearly all of your Admiralty cards will be added to your ship roster and ready for deployment. STO Ship Artist Hector Ortiz Shares the 25th Century Crossfield Concept Design The final four starships have been revealed in the 10th Anniversary Legendary Ship Bundle, which is now on sale in the C-store. These are the Discovery, the Voyager, the Discovery era Enterprise, and the TOS Enterprise respectively. These ships of course come with all new stats and layouts, all previously associated consoles, mastery abilities, and traits, along with one new account unlock trait per ship and an exclusive visual variant. The TOS Enterprise features the Phase 2 concept variant, the Disco Enterprise features a John Eaves concept version, the Voyager comes with the Warship Voyager skin as seen in the episode, “Living Witness,” and the Discovery comes with a spectacular 25th century version of the Crossfield class. In Gaming News, the mobile game Fleet Command is getting a huge update; then, we wrap our year with TWO interviews with Cryptic Studios to discuss 2019 milestones and take a glimpse into 2020…. Featuring an interview with Executive Producer Andre Emerson. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: If “Star Trek Development Project #2” isn't a film directed by Tarantino, what do you hope it is? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Picard News The hype shuttle for Star Trek: Picard has definitely hit maximum warp, Captains. In fact, Picard is the number one most anticipated TV show of the coming year. At least according to metrics compiled and reported by the website IMDB. And if this week's news reported by Deadline is any indication, CBS is well aware of the hype. The new series doesn't even premiere until January 23rd, but Season Two has already been budgeted with over $20.4 million in tax incentives by the state of California. For reference sake, Deadline reports that Picard's $20 million incentive is “the most any small screen project has ever been awarded in the California Film Commission program since then Governor Jerry Brown officially expanded the credits to $330 million a year”. So while the cast and crew have been cagey when asked about a potential Season Two, it's hard to argue with $20 million in tax appropriations. Plenty of questions still hang over Season Two speculation, though.  One big uncertainty for fans is the role that Season One showrunner Michael Chabon may occupy.  On December 10th, Variety reported that the Pulitzer Prize winning author and his wife, producing partner Ayelet Waldman, inked a deal with ViacomCBS property Showtime to adapt his novel “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay”.  The pair will serve the new project as Executive Producers and joint-showrunners. Now surely, Chabon will remain creatively connected to Picard Season Two, but it seems likely these other commitments will see him step down as showrunner. With lots to still speculate about, only one thing seems certain after the Season Two news. My previous prediction that Star Trek: Picard would be a single season swansong for the great Captain… well just maybe I was wrong.  Unless! What if they still send off Jean-Luc in the first season finale, and the show carries on the adventures of the rest of the cast aboard the U.S.S. Picard? It could happen. Trekantino On The Rocks? While we're in the mood for speculation, let's revisit some news we shared last episode. If you recall, we discussed recent statements from new ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish, and among those was his confirmation that two new Star Trek films are currently in development. The obvious contenders at the time were the Kelvin Timeline's Star Trek 4 and the much discussed Quentin Tarantino Star Trek project. But comments made by Tarantino this week are casting doubt on whether his Star Trek project may proceed at all. The Oscar-winning writer/director sat down for an interview with ConsequenceOfSound.net as their Filmmaker of the Year. In the far reaching interview, Tarantino once again echoed his commitment to walk away from filmmaking after 10 films. And when questioned whether Star Trek represented that 10th film, he answered, “I think I'm steering away from Star Trek, but I haven't had an official conversation with those guys yet.” He went on to add “But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one's going to be. I don't even have a clue.” Paramount VR Deal Paramount Pictures and VR platform service Bigscreen, Inc. have announced a new partnership. Under the new arrangement, Bigscreen's virtual theater platform will distribute classic Paramount movies in 10 countries around the world. Starting December 16th 2019, Bigscreen will show four new movies every week, with each movie run lasting one week. Showtimes will begin every 30 minutes as live pay-per-view events. Captains, you'll be happy to hear that the Kelvin Star Trek films are among the titles in the December lineup.  The virtual screenings will include 2D movies as well as select 3D movies rendered to create a unique 3D experience for Virtual Reality viewers. Besides just watching the films, Bigscreen offers users a virtual lobby with personal avatars and voice chat to add a social aspect to the experience. CEO and Founder of Bigscreen, Darshan Shankar, says “We are excited to enable fans around the world to chat and watch films together in our virtual movie theater.” Bigscreen's service supports the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, HTC Vive, Valve Index, SteamVR, and Microsoft Mixed Reality. To find out more, and to see a list of upcoming films, Trek out the links in our show notes. A Starfleet dress uniform worn by Patrick Stewart on The Next Generation sold for $28,800. This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: If “Star Trek Development Project #2” isn’t a film directed by Tarantino, what do you hope it is? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Picard News The hype shuttle for Star Trek: Picard has definitely hit maximum warp, Captains. In fact, Picard is the number one most anticipated TV show of the coming year. At least according to metrics compiled and reported by the website IMDB. And if this week’s news reported by Deadline is any indication, CBS is well aware of the hype. The new series doesn’t even premiere until January 23rd, but Season Two has already been budgeted with over $20.4 million in tax incentives by the state of California. For reference sake, Deadline reports that Picard’s $20 million incentive is “the most any small screen project has ever been awarded in the California Film Commission program since then Governor Jerry Brown officially expanded the credits to $330 million a year”.
