BANG! @southernvangard radio Ep410! Well this is long overdue. This was recorded the last Sunday in August, but one of Doe's kids had his appendix out (he's doing great btw) the day the show was supposed to post. Doe completely forgot to post the show until Meeks reminded him over Labor Day Weekend. Doe's turntables have also been out of commission for the last week so we didn't do Ep411 this week. When normies all pick Illmatic, Blueprint, The Chronic, and Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as the best rap albums ever, we go the other way and give each our personal lists for the 10 greatest rap albums with our own criteria: autobiographical impact, albums at least 10+ years old, overlooked pioneers that influenced decades of work, and breakthrough technical achievements that Billboard, Apple, and Rolling Stone never highlight! Likely due to my incessant thirst for control and structure, whenever I take in a piece of art and consider how the creator approached the making of this thing I find so great, my mind immediately assumes that there was this rigid, almost scientific forethought put into every detail. And while some artists work with more of a structure than others… as you will learn in this free-wheeling conversation with ShrapKnel and Controller 7, there is a serendipitous beauty that colours much of the creation of the new album from today's guests, Nobody Planning to Leave. Where a lifetime of artistic dedication, a genuine love for hip-hop culture, and happy coincidence all combined to make Nobody Planning to Leave one of the most captivating albums of 2024, serving as ShrapKnel's most accessible, yet creatively challenging record to-date. The Plug (0:50). The Interview (2:23). The Nobody Planning to Leave initial reception and RMPP Listening Party debrief (4:11). The sense of camaraderie and connection within the current indie rap scene (6:57). The central vision of Nobody Planning to Leave (11:11). The influence of Castro's diagnosis on the Nobody Planning to Leave creative process (20:56). The dynamic sound and structure of Nobody Planning to Leave (30:17). Why Controller 7 was the right producer to steward the sound for the 3rd ShrapKnel album (42:09). How the ShrapKnel chemistry has evolved over the years (54:39). Most interesting / fun track to create on Nobody Planning to Leave (1:05:17). Upcoming projects / tour dates / merch (1:12:45). Your hosts this episode: Patrique Thoughtful And special guest: Curly Castro That's right. It's quite possibly the biggest episode the podcast has had yet. In a special overview of the man's own catalogue the podcast is joined by CURLY CASTRO HIMSELF. We cannot thank him enough here at the podcast for allowing your hosts Patrique, and returning guest Thoughtful, to probe his mind about his varied catalogue and his evolution as an artist. Going in detail from his early group beginnings, to his stylistic evolutions from his early career to his late career, when he first met and collaborated with Billy Woods, and the dealings being involved with various groups later in his career with Wrecking Crew, ShrapKnel, and Grift Company. It's good times and vibes all around and we hope you too enjoy this personal deep dive as much as our hosts did. Your hosts this episode: Patrique Thoughtfoul Patrique is back with fellow previous podcast guest Thoughtfoul with a long promised episode since the last time the two came together for their discussion on Mr. eXquire, to discuss the underground Rap label Backwoodz Studioz. Since that review much has come out from the grim-y, lyrical label and in this episode the pod hosts look back at the last subsequent year of the label's releases and subsequent label members up to the present day. Beginning with rerelease of Premrock's "Load Bearing Crow's Feet" and ending with the recent release of Elucid's old group Cult Favorite's "Sway, Masses". Along the way they discuss the label's packed with talent roster such as Curly Castro, Billy Woods, Elucid, Akai Solo, Shrapknel, and more. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Hook (0:21). Main Body of Discussion (2:00). Few albums build an entirely fresh and distinct musical universe quite like ShrapKnel's Metal Lung. Within seconds, the duo of PremRock and Curly Castro bring you on a 40+ minute journey that features a combination of A1 lyricism, and production that is wildly psychedelic and atmospheric. Coming off the heels of two great solo albums respectively, and the debut ShrapKnel record that was great in its own right, my expectations couldn't have been higher for Metal Lung... and I am very happy to say that these expectations were blown out of the water. The dynamic duo of Curly Castro and PremRock joined the show to deep-dive into the creation of Metal Lung, in the 3rd installment of the Album Alchemy series. Listen on to hear how one of the best albums of 2022 was conceived. We are blessed to be joined this week by some old and new friends of the program that are making vital rap music right now. First up we have a group interview with Wrecking Crew, a conglomerate that consists of producer Small Professor and MCs Zilla Rocca, Curly Castro and Prem Rock. They are all return guests on DBRP and are here to tell us a bit more about their recent album Sedale Threat. Make sure to tap in with the Wrecking Crew and all of their affiliated projects including their podcast Call Out Culture. We consider Call Out Culture to be kind of like a sister program, we are all thinking and talking about similar music, and in fact that is where we became aware of our next guests, the incendiary duo Brian Ennals & Infinity Knives. The Baltimore-based Ennals is one of the most incisive dissectors of the issues facing America today and he relays his angry yet well written lyrics over production from the classically trained composer Infinity Knives. The result is a new sound, a refreshing take on issue-oriented underground hip-hop that makes us think of groups like The Coup. but stands on its own as a new thing entirely. Dad Bod Rap Pod is a proud part of the Stony Island Audio network.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the JASON GRIFF interview session! If you’ve done any history on hip-hop (you should have - if not, time to start NOW), you know the NYC hip-hop, punk & art scenes all thrived off one another in it’s early days, and Griff is delivering his version of that experience this week via his producer concept album, “FIRESIDE CHATS.” Griff breaks down how punk, hip-hop and a world renowned Chicago bowling alley, FIRESIDE BOWL, provided the inspiration for his latest endeavor on INSUBORDINATE RECORDS, which features SCORCESE (RIP). ALEX LUDOVICO, JUGANAUT, ALASKA, ZILLA ROCCA, CURLY CASTRO, BILLY WOODS and DEFCEE. We also catch up with Griff on what else we can expect from the Insubordinate Records crew this year and the work they have vowed to carry on since Scorcese’s unexpected passing at the top of 2020. This week we dive into one of the best New York rap records ever with one of our favourite podcasts out there - Curly Castro, Alaska and Zilla Rocca bring the Call Out Culture podcast flavour to talk Jeru the Damaja’s 1994 classic ‘The Sun Rises in the East’
Hey, thank you for listening. This is another episode I recorded quite a while ago. Like - a long time. After COVID but still before protests started. I'm excited to put it out there now - the guest is ShrapKnel (https://shrapknel.bandcamp.com/) ShrapKnel is a rap duo by Premrock ( https://planetpremrock.bandcamp.com/ ) and Curly Castro ( https://curlycastro.bandcamp.com/ ) Two artists and friends I've known for several years now – they've both had incredible solo careers, been involved in many collaborative projects before- and formed ShrapKnel in 2019 – dropped an EP and then a full-length album on the Backwoodz Studios label, both amazing and was received incredibly well. Then in May of this year, they put out flechette – an album with remixes and a little new material. Please enjoy and visit the links for Prem and Castro, support these incredible people and artists. This week we have a special crossover episode with our buddies Alaska, Zilla Rocca and Curly Castro, MCs and hosts of the podcast Call Out Culture. All 6 of us submitted a hip-hop related "hot take" and then everyone had a chance to respond. We call it The Takeoff. It's intended to be a bit punchier than our usual winding discussions. This week we have a lively show, up top our 3 co-hosts discuss hip-hop's best "comeback" albums, a term with a surprisingly wide range of interpretations. Then we have a great interview with Curly Castro and Prem Rock, who are best known as a duo as Shrapknel. They have a very good new self titled album out on Backwoodz Studios produced by Elucid and Willie Green. Beats on this week's show are provided by Buscrates taken from his new release Eternal RIdin' (Instrumentals.) The third segment is an audio essay form Demone on the impact of Q-Tip and Tribe's first album People's Instinctive Travels. Philadelphia transplant Curly Castro is keeping boom-bap alive in the City of Brotherly Love. He drops in to talk about his latest solo offering and a classic Def Jux album that has influenced his trajectory - Mr. Lif's flawless concept project I Phantom.
Curly Castro enlists Zilla Rocca to recap the third season of USA's "Mr. Robot". Discussing plot, character development and a bunch of other stuff that you shouldn't be listening to IF you're not caught all the way up. So there's your spoiler alert. However I gotta admit as someone who has seen zero episodes of this show, this makes me want to watch. -Am S/o to Ethonggg on the HalfCrazy Remix
