Full Text of ReadingsSaturday of the Third Week of Lent Lectionary: 242The Saint of the day is Saint Ludovico of CasoriaSaint Ludovico of Casoria's Story Born in Casoria, near Naples, Arcangelo Palmentieri was a cabinet-maker before entering the Friars Minor in 1832, taking the name Ludovico. After his ordination five years later, he taught chemistry, physics, and mathematics to younger members of his province for several years. In 1847, he had a mystical experience which he later described as a cleansing. After that, he dedicated his life to the poor and the infirm, establishing a dispensary for the poor, two schools for African children, an institute for the children of nobility, as well as an institution for orphans, the deaf, and the speechless, and other institutes for the blind, elderly, and for travelers. In addition to an infirmary for friars of his province, he began charitable institutes in Naples, Florence, and Assisi. He once said, “Christ's love has wounded my heart.” This love prompted him to great acts of charity. To help continue these works of mercy, in 1859 he established the Gray Brothers, a religious community composed of men who formerly belonged to the Secular Franciscan Order. Three years later, he founded the Gray Sisters of St. Elizabeth for the same purpose. Toward the beginning of his final, nine-year illness, Ludovico wrote a spiritual testament which described faith as “light in the darkness, help in sickness, blessing in tribulations, paradise in the crucifixion, and life amid death.” The local work for his beatification began within five months of Ludovico's death. He was beatified in 1993 and canonized in 2014. Reflection Saintly people are not protected from suffering, but with God's help they learn how to develop compassion from it. In the face of great suffering, we move either toward compassion or indifference. Saintly men and women show us the path toward compassion. Researchers recently found underground passages hidden beneath old buildings, matching designs from da Vinci's mysterious drawings. These tunnels might have been escape routes, secret workshops, or even part of a hidden defense system. Some believe da Vinci planned them for royalty or military strategies, using his genius to create something way ahead of his time. Through meticulous readings of key passages in Marx's oeuvre, Silva isolates the key elements of his style: his search for an “architectonic” unity at the level of the text, his capacity to express himself dialectically at the level of the sentence, and, above all, his great gift for metaphor. Silva's unique sensitivity to Marx's literary choices allows him to illuminate a number of terms that have been persistently, and fatefully, misunderstood by many of Marx's most influential readers, including alienation, reflection, and base and superstructure. At the heart of Silva's book is his contention that we we cannot hope to understand Marx if we treat him as a scientist, a philosopher, or a literary writer, when he was in fact all three at once. Originally published in 1971, this is a key work by one of the most important Latin American Marxists of the twentieth century. This edition, which marks the first appearance of one of Silva's works in English, features an introduction by Alberto Toscano. Alberto Toscano is an Italian cultural critic, social theorist, philosopher, and translator. He has translated the work of Alain Badiou, including Badiou's The Century and Logics of Worlds. Full Text of ReadingsGood Friday of the Lord's Passion Lectionary: 40The Saint of the day is Saint Ludovico of CasoriaSaint Ludovico of Casoria's Story Born in Casoria, near Naples, Arcangelo Palmentieri was a cabinet-maker before entering the Friars Minor in 1832, taking the name Ludovico. After his ordination five years later, he taught chemistry, physics, and mathematics to younger members of his province for several years. In 1847, he had a mystical experience which he later described as a cleansing. After that, he dedicated his life to the poor and the infirm, establishing a dispensary for the poor, two schools for African children, an institute for the children of nobility, as well as an institution for orphans, the deaf, and the speechless, and other institutes for the blind, elderly, and for travelers. In addition to an infirmary for friars of his province, he began charitable institutes in Naples, Florence, and Assisi. He once said, “Christ's love has wounded my heart.” This love prompted him to great acts of charity. To help continue these works of mercy, in 1859 he established the Gray Brothers, a religious community composed of men who formerly belonged to the Secular Franciscan Order. Three years later, he founded the Gray Sisters of St. Elizabeth for the same purpose. Toward the beginning of his final, nine-year illness, Ludovico wrote a spiritual testament which described faith as “light in the darkness, help in sickness, blessing in tribulations, paradise in the crucifixion, and life amid death.” The local work for his beatification began within five months of Ludovico's death. He was beatified in 1993 and canonized in 2014. Reflection Saintly people are not protected from suffering, but with God's help they learn how to develop compassion from it. He decides to kill them, but Gino's wife, the young and beautiful Francesca, begs for the lives of her husband and her father and Prospero brings them alive to his castle expecting to corrupt Francesca. Propero worships Satan and invites his noble friends to stay in his castle that is a shelter of depravity against the plague. When Prospero invites his guests to attend a masked ball, he sees a red hooded stranger and he believes that Satan himself has attended his party. Dicembre è il mese di Natale e, in Italia, ogni regione lo festeggia con delle tradizioni e delle abitudini molto particolari. In questa lezione scopriremo quali sono! Natale nelle diverse Regioni italiane: un mosaico culturale festivo 1. VALLE D'AOSTA Tra le tradizioni più interessanti del Natale in Valle d'Aosta c'è la sagra del pane micooula (in dialetto, “un po' piccolo e un po' speciale”), preparato proprio nel periodo natalizio e fatto con castagne, noci, uva passa e fichi secchi. La tradizione ha origine da una leggenda: come consuetudine, la sera della Vigilia di Natale, una donna di nome Rosa si stava dirigendo in chiesa per la Messa. Poiché era in ritardo, prese una scorciatoia attraverso il bosco e si trovò di fronte a un vecchio mulino abbandonato, noto per essere la dimora di spiriti, streghe e altre creature maligne. Tuttavia, la donna non era spaventata perché sapeva che Dio vegliava su di lei. Così, quando le comparve davanti un enorme serpente minacciandola, Rosa gli chiese cosa volesse per ritrovare la retta via smarrita. Il serpente le chiese un pezzo di pane dalla chiesa in cambio della sua vita salva. Rosa accettò e, tornando dalla Chiesa, diede al serpente il pane benedetto. Dopo averlo mangiato, il serpente si trasformò in una colomba bianca, che spiccò il volo verso il cielo. 2. PIEMONTE In Piemonte la tradizione del Ceppo di Natale è molto conosciuta. Si tratta di un tronco d'albero decorato con candele, che viene acceso la sera della Vigilia di Natale. Ma era così popolare che… è diventato anche dolce! Infatti, è molto comune preparare un tronchetto dolce per il pranzo natalizio, fatto con cioccolato, panna, brandy… Probabilmente, questa tradizione è stata influenzata dalla Francia (vicina al Piemonte), dove è molto comune la Bûche de Noël per Natale. 3. LOMBARDIA Il famosissimo panettone natalizio, un dolce lievitato ricco di canditi e uvetta, è nato proprio in Lombardia e qui, ancor più che nel resto d'Italia, è un must per il cenone (e il pranzo) natalizio. Ma come è nato il panettone? Ci sono varie leggende al riguardo. La più accreditata narra che il panettone sia nato per errore durante il pranzo di Natale preparato per Ludovico il Moro (XV secolo). Il cuoco di corte avrebbe infatti scordato nel forno il dolce che stava preparando, facendolo bruciare. Lo sguattero Toni, però, trovò la soluzione per servirlo lo stesso: unì all'impasto salvabile burro, uvetta e canditi! Diede così origine al “Pan di Toni”, poi divenuto “panettone”. 4. TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE In Trentino si festeggia il Krampuslauf, una parata di Krampus (figure demoniache dai denti aguzzi e dalle lunghe corna). Queste figure sfilano per le vie delle città, spaventando grandi e piccini ma soprattutto scoraggiando i cattivi comportamenti dei bambini durante il periodo natalizio. 5. VENETO A Venezia, soprattutto nel passato, la figura della Befana era più popolare di quella di Babbo Natale. I bambini, infatti, non aspettavano i regali da Babbo Natale, ma proprio dalla vecchina, la “Marantega”, che, nella notte tra il 5 e il 6 gennaio, riempiva le loro calze con piccoli doni, dolci, caramelle, frutta secca, mandarini e, per i più monelli, anche qualche pezzo di carbone. Perciò ancora oggi, ogni anno, a Venezia, viene organizzata la Regata della Befana, una cerimonia decisamente unica nel suo genere rispetto alle celebrazioni per la Befana nel resto d'Italia. 6. FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA La tradizione più affascinante, antichissima ma ancora oggi viva e sentita, è quella dei Pignarûi. Il Pignarûl sembrerebbe legato all'adorazione di Beleno (o Belanu), antica divinità della luce. Beleno era uno dei principali dei pagani per il quale si eseguivano sacrifici e riti. Tra questi vi era l'accensione di falò sulla cima dei colli, forse anche in onore della sua compagna, Belisma, dea del fuoco. Così ancora oggi, dopo secoli, la sera del 5 gennaio e soprattutto la sera del 6 gennaio...
Charles VIII of France starts to head into Italy, beginning with the lands of Savoy where a 2-year-old duke leaves things to his mum to deal with the expensive guest who also asks her for a loan.Meanwhile, the Neapolitans try to go on the offensive by attacking locations along the Tuscan and Ligurian coast to no avail.Charles then meets with Ludovico il Moro, then the real duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Sforza, who then dies a week after the meeting, saying goodbye to his dogs and horses at his deathbed.Then it is to Florence, where the son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Piero, after sitting on the fence for a while, rolls over and gives Charles more than necessary and hets kicked out of Florence for it.Charles, however, fares no better with the new Florentine government and after a confusing argument about horns and bells, he makes his way to Rome with reduced results from the negotiation.
We look at the background to the expedition by King Charles VIII of France into Italy to claim the throne of Naples. This takes us to explore the situation i Milan, with Duke Gian Galeazzo Sforza and his uncle Ludovico il Moro, then to Naples, where king Alphonse II has just succeeded his father Ferrante. We see the diplomatic and military preparation that once again sees the Italian powers, Milan, Venice, Florence, the Papal States and Naples have to decide which side to line up on, with the novelty of the most powerful army in Europe heading into the peninsula.This is the start of the Italian Wars, the conflict that really took Europe into the Modern Age.
