Episode 098 brings a double dose of low end theory, welcoming a pioneering pair of underground bass legends percolating on opposite coasts, both cats deep in the streets and boasting decades in the game, with the catalogues and collaborators to prove it. 0:00 - ep.098 preview 3:30 - High Sierra Music Festival 2026 6:30 - The Upful Update 12:00 - intro: Club d'Elf's MIKE RIVARD [aka Micro] 15:00 - INTERVIEW w/ MICRO [83m] 1:38:00 - introducing LONNIE MARSHALL 1:42:00 - INTERVIEW w/ LONNIE [43m] 2:24:30 - afterglow x ViBE Junkie Jamz First up Mike Rivard [aka Micro] - bass/sintir/founder/visionary of Boston's jazz-trance-dub-hop institution known as Club d'Elf. Twas an honor and privilege to finally tap in with Micro after a quarter century of fandom and awe. We chop it up at length about his group's unicorn career, magnificent co-conspirators like the late Mark Sandman, John Medeski, Brahim Fribgane (RIP), Joe and Mat Maneri, Dave Tronzo, and (Friends Of The Pod) Mister Rourke, Adam Deitch, Ryan Zoidis, Jonny G, among several others. We learn about Moroccan sintir; the healing powers of Gnawa trance music; plant medicines and Terrence McKenna; Micro's personal trials and tribulations along the way; his perspective on the integral role of independent music venues; interpolating NOLA Second Line rhythms in tandem with Morrocan traditions; and revisiting his embryonic journeys with the Grateful Dead as a wide-eared, curious youngster. In April 2026, Club d'Elf unveiled their latest full-length LP Loon & Thrush, a positively magnificent affair in a deep, eclectic d'Elf canon brimming with brilliant configurations and bold adventuring. We chase that inspired dialog with another informative chat featuring LA-based bassist/badass Lonnie Marshall from pioneering underground funk/hip-hop squadron Weapon of Choice. Lonnie was kind enough to hop on the line and discuss his life of Nutmeg Music, his bombastic and eclectic history and colorful persona, lineage from the P-Funk family tree and his teenage era rolling with Bootsy Collins' Boot Camp, storytelling and dope collabs, daKAH hip-hop orchestra, recording/gigging with Joe Strummer's debut solo LP/group, reflections on his brother Arik Marshall's brief, chaotic moment with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and long-term run backing Macy Gray. Plus a whole lot more in this educational inspirational get down with the most mega-nutt mug to ever bless these podwaves! Bassist/sintir sorcerer Mike Rivard [aka MicroVard] defies any sort of rigid genre-specifics or generic categorization. The cat finds himself at home in a bewildering array of musical/cultural settings: from the good ol' Grateful Dead to the melancholic-rock of his late friend Mark Sandman and Morphine, to the mountains of Morocco with local Berber musicians, plus side trips into the Broadway pits, and tantric trance sessions with John Medeski and Joe Maneri. A "military brat" coming of adolescence in the wide expanses of Minnesota, he took in the local sounds of Prince, Husker Du, and the free-jazz coming out of the University of Minnesota milieu. Eventually a young Rivard would find himself while hitchiking on Dead tour, further opening up nascent doors of perception. Later, Micro set about embarking on Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1981. After graduating, he studied with jazz legend Dave Holland. Inspired by North African gnawa music, he picked up a Moroccan sintir (three-stringed bass lute) and with guidance from Hassan Hakmoun and Maalem Mahmoud Gania, he has become one of a handful of Western musicians proficient on the instrument. He puts all of the shared sacred teachings and wisdom to good use in Club d'Elf, the jazz-world-dub-electronica squad he formed in 1998. Club d'Elf can be heard across more than 15 albums over the past 25 years; an eclectic, pioneering collective with a vast array of co-conspirators from around the world. Club d'Elf website Instagram new album Loon & Thrush After years grinding it out on the LA scene with his brother Arik in Marshall Law, Lonnie Marshall founded Weapon of Choice in 1992, holding down bass and lead vocals. After a video directed by Geoff Moore for their song "Uppity, Yuppity Doolittle" came to the attention of Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, the band was signed to Gossard‘s record label Loosegroove. They released three albums with Loosegroove before the company folded in 2000: "Nut-meg says Bozo the Town" (1994), Highperspice (1996), and Nutmeg Phantasy (1998). In 2001, the band dropped Illoominutty on Fishbone's Nuttsactor 5 record label, and in 2003, they released Color Me Funky. Since 1997, Lonnie has performed alongside members of P Funk and Fishbone, among others, as part of Trulio Disgracias - a constantly mutating funk-rock-jazz collective headed by by Norwood Fisher. Lonnie was an emcee, composer, and performer for daKAH, a 65 piece hip-hop orchestra which coalesced periodically in the Los Angeles area for many years. Before that, Marshall wrote, recorded and toured with the legendary Joe Strummer of The Clash, behind Strummer's dynamic 1989 solo debut Earthquake Weather. Lonnie has contributed/collaborated with Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, Tone Loc, Ice Cube, George Clinton, Funkadelic, Perry Farrell, Les Claypool, Stone Gossard and his brother Arik Marshall. For over 50 years, Saturday Night Live has been one of the most Important shows for rock music in the history of the nascent television medium. While, arguably, the most famous moment in the show's history (and Tony's favorite?) is RHCP's multi-key 1992 version of “Under The Bridge”, there have been others. (Musical Guest The Ting Tings ripping up a photo of Colonel Sanders comes to mind.) Fortunately, just in time for NBC's never more relevant, May sweeps season finale of SNL, they pulled in the big guns: RHCP! Oh s**t, Frusciante and Kiedis (LLC) are busy? Maybe (checks notes) Chad Smith is free? Might as well bring in noted Chad Smith lookalike Will Ferrel (“Elf”, Capitol One) to teach Chad how to host the show! Everyone knows Chad Smith's best friend is Paul McCartney. So Chad called Sir Paul to see if he'd learn the bass part for the AI generated RHCP songs “Funky California Space Cadet” and “Santa Monica Ding-Dong”, as onetime Macca drummer Chris Whitten beat Flea's ass in Hamburg. Where you ask? Why, under the bridge. When asked for comment, Flea replied, I don't ever wanna feel, like when Chris Whitten kicked my ass.” Later that week, as longtime Macca drummer Abe Laboriel JR was (Alonzo) mourning young mister Christopher's legal predicament and unable to travel, Chad Smith had an idea. He could play in Paul's band! On SNL! The very talented singer songwriter Ingrid Michaelson can even sing back-up, and perhaps even “Cook Of The House”! And Paul could completely ignore any lame Beatles music during the live, 90 minute broadcast, because nobody wants to hear that junk! (#Motorcars #Handlebars) Are you still with us? Da f is wrong with you? You already know Tony & T.J. will talk Macca's historic SNL performance and also hit you up with such mind benders as:

Today on the show I speak with percussion legend - Lenny Castro.Lenny is an American based musician who at this point in his career is probably one of the most recorded percussionists in musical history, having played on hundreds (if not thousands of records). Some of the artists he has worked with include 'The Rolling Stones', The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Adele, Toto, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Elton John and even one of my absolute favorites, The New Radicals - to name just a few.In addition to his work with all these incredible artists Lenny also recently started putting out music of his own. His debut record entitled 'Hands Of Silk' is an absolute masterclass on percussion tone which I can't recommend enough.During our conversation, Lenny and I talk about his initial introductions to music, his love of groove, AI, music careers, touring and even his relationship with the late great Jeff Porcaro. For more information on Lenny Castro or his work, please search for him across all socials or visit www.hardhnds.com.For further information on Travis Marc or 'Musicians-Mentor' website, please visit www.musicians-mentor.com As usual, thanks for checking out the channel and if you're getting anything useful from my content, please feel free to comment, like, share and subscribe, thank you. Welcome to Episode 097 veteran drummer and percussionist JOHN SPEICE, prominently based in the Austin scene. Best known for work with Grammy-winning Latin ensemble Grupo Fantasma and its psychedelic-funk offshoot Brownout, including their beloved Black Sabbath-inspired side trip Brown Sabbath. Throughout his career, Speice has been core to a diverse array of bands like Money Chicha, Hairy Apes BMX, and Caramelo Haze, also collaborating with Black Pumas, Daniel Johnston, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Trio Asesino, Jon Muq, among many others. I first saw John Speice electrify with a one-off version of Marco Benevento Trio at Megalomaniacs Ball 2011 in New Orleans over Jazz Fest. In addition to giving us the lowdown on the Apes reunion, we get the scoop on a half-dozen of his super-dope bands. John breaks down a bit of basic history and the musical/cultural impact of classic and contemporary cumbia/chicha styles. He reflects on how they've been interpreted/expounded upon since breaking through stateside some years ago. A friend for a dozen years, this pod conversation is many moons in the making. It’s the new-year kickoff episode that starts at full throttle and somehow keeps finding another gear. In “2026 FNK and… GO,” Mike and Joe spin a playlist built for the first cheers of the year - loud, proud, a little chaotic (in the best way), and powered by the Friday Night Karaoke Facebook group. Along the way, they riff on the “countdown” theme landing after the calendar flipped, hype up the FNK crew, and keep circling back to one mission: start 2026 with big energy, big voices, and zero hesitation. Featured performances (with the moments that made them pop on the show) Kristoff Crafton - “Drink Myself Drunk” (Rebel Son): The ultimate “hit play and the year starts now” opener. Mike and Joe immediately talk about it like a repeat-listen anthem and even bring up singing it together at PodFest in Orlando. Jennifer Adams - “Get the Party Started” (Pink): Introduced with full love as a longtime pillar of the community (and a group moderator) - then the dynamic duo nerds out over how tough it is to “record over yourself” and how she stacked vocals like an audio inception trick. Nancy Van Eindhoven - “The Final Countdown” (Europe): Mike sets it up as the perfect countdown energy (even if you’re recording a few days late), then you both rave about her power and presence - the kind that makes you sing along even if you’ve heard the song a million times. Rick Mendoza - “Around and Around” (The Rolling Stones): Timeless, classic, and somehow “Elvis-y” in the best way. The vibe sends the conversation straight into retro rock-and-roll territory and Mike’s excitement about a 50s-style night in Orlando. Mike Wiston - “Suck My Kiss” (Red Hot Chili Peppers): “My podcast, my prerogative” energy. Mike frames it as his personal 2026 welcome song, shouts out seeing RHCP live in Tokyo, and you keep the momentum ripping toward the back half of the episode. Annastaisyar - “Crazy Train” (Ozzy Osbourne): A live-bar recording with that real karaoke-room electricity. Mike and Joe both point out you can’t stand still on a song like this - and you give her big credit for fully getting into it and bringing serious vocals. Katie Rose - “I Like It Heavy” (Halestorm): Pure “turn it up past 10” payoff. The hosts both react to the whole vibe (including the gritty video look) and the massive ending - and you even accidentally label it “Good to Be Alive” for a second, which honestly becomes the perfect accidental motto for this episode. Hit play, crank it up, and start your year the FNK way - loud, fun, and together. Love what you hear? Join the Friday Night Karaoke Facebook group here and be part of the magic! Baxie talks to drummer Greg Langston. This is an unbelievable story about Greg's time with the Sea Hags. This was a band that had been set to become “The Next Guns n Roses”. But due to a series of unfortunate circumstances and bad decisions the band began to implode just before they had a chance to record their one and only studio album. This was a band that had everything going their way until it suddenly didn't. In fact, Greg talks about the Sea Hags even having their early demos produced by Kirk Hammet from Metallica and the great Siliva Masse (Johnny Cash, Tool, RHCP). Greg talks about that, his previous work with both No Alternative and Tuxedo Moon, getting fired from the band, and about the release of a previously unavailable live recording of the Sea Hags which has just been released on Liberation Hall records (“Dead & Gone”). Just an amazing and heartbreaking story of a band that missed it by THAT much! Listen wherever you find podcasts and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee.

New Hampshire Unscripted talks with the performance arts movers and shakers
God I love my job! Willie Armstrong from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers (yes pipers) takes some time from their busy schedule to call in to the WKXL/NH Unscripted studios and talk about this high octane musical group. From the early days of winning a talent contest to playing before 85,000 fans Willie covers it all. For the past two decades, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers have taken the world by storm with their infectious blend of groundbreaking fusion of traditional Scottish music with rock and pop anthems which they proudly call ‘Bagrock.' And you can tell by the way Willie talks that RHCP have a deep love and respect for their fans. Song selection, fan engagement, the structure of each event and hint that they're dropping a new album are all on the table. They're playing March 2nd at the Colonial Theater in Laconia. “Solidarity, Spirituality and Liberatory Promise on a Turtle's Back” with Ashanti Omowali Alston This week, we're sharing words from anarchist, author, organizer and former participant in the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army, Ashanti Omowali Alston, in the key note address at the 2024 Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in so-called Asheville. The presentation was entitled “Solidarity, Spirituality and Liberatory Promise on a Turtle's Back”. You can support Ashanti's GoFundMe here. Transcript PDF (Unimposed) Zine (Imposed PDF) From the ACAB website: Trusting in solidarity, the mysterium of spirituality, and a promise from god knows where—a “where” that at this historical moment, might just be Palestine. What does it mean TO BE in the midst of all this right now? RIGHT NOW! M. Ashanti Alston is a revolutionary Black nationalist, anarchist, abolitionist, speaker, writer, elder motivator. A long-time member of The Jericho Movement, he is presently an advisory board member of the National Jericho Movement and co-founding board member of the Center for Grassroots Organizing (Vermont land project). He continues giving talks and writing inspirational analyses concerning the dismantling of the myriad oppressive regimes in which we find ourselves enmeshed. Ashanti is one of the few former members of the Black Panther Party who identifies as an anarchist in the tradition of ancestor Kwesi Balagoon (BPP & BLA). He developed abolitionist politics in the early years of Critical Resistance. He has helped save the life of a baby pig with animal liberationists, learned depth-queer politics from being challenged, and wants to see non-ego eldership partaking through sincerely loving the younger generations who truly want to ‘CARRY IT ON.” You can find other recordings from the 2024 ACABookfair at acabookfair.noblogs.org. Announcement Phone Zap for Granville CI in North Carolina Prisoners have been filing grievances at Granville CI, a prison in Butner, North Carolina, to no avail complaining about a lack of the legally mandated showers and access to the exercise yard, and are asking for phone calls and emails to demand a resumption of serving these basic needs despite any claims of understaffing: By Joseph ''Shine White'' Stewart How many prisoners must die and how long must we languish in solitary confinement subjected to these harsh and unconstitutional living conditions before there is a public outcry? The deficiencies in the day-to-day operations of this prison have been longstanding/persistent and well documented. In the past I've reported on the culture of abuse, negligence and unprofessionalism here at Granville Correctional. Over the past couple of months the conditions have only worsened. Those of us who are assigned to Restrictive Housing for Control Purposes (RHCP) are being deprived of showers, recreation, subjected to inadequate health care and other unconstitutional treatment. Pursuant to Chapter C subsection .1205(A) of the NCDAC policy and procedure manual, prisoners assigned to RHCP will have the opportunity to shower a least three times a week. Lately prison staff have been using the excuse that there is not enough staff to give us showers or even saying that they are too tired to do showers. As always I must maintain my integrity and be honest when reporting on these conditions. The laziness and neglect I am mentioning here doesn't apply to all the staff. Sergeant Jones, the second shift sergeant here in C-1 building, makes sure that we are afforded the opportunity to shower. However when it's not her shift or if she's not scheduled to work we're likely not to receive showers if there is a shortage of staff. Despite being demoted to a less restrictive solitary confinement setting I've yet to be offered to exercise outside. Pursuant to Chapter C section .1206 of NCDAC policy and process manual, prisoners assigned to RHCP shall he allowed one hour per day, five days per week to exercise outside of the cell, moreover the outdoor exercise cages should be used as the primary exercise area. During the exercise periods we are to be allowed to exercise unrestrained. As when it is time for us to take showers the same excuse is used to deprive us of any recreational time. They don't have enough staff. As mentioned I haven't been afforded outside exercise for almost three years now despite being demoted to a lower security level. Recreation here in C-1 building consists of us being placed in full restraints and allowed to pace up and down the tier for one hour. Lastly, custody staff are having any medical appointments cancelled claiming there isn't enough staff to escort is to the nurse's station. This includes mental health appointments as well. Of course the foregoing isn't all that needs to be addressed, however these are the issues that my peers and I find to be the most important, thus we entreat that the reader call and demand redress for the aforementioned issues. Warden James Williams and unit manager Eldridge Walker are responsible for promulgating the aforementioned policies and procedures and for the allowance of the aforementioned practices/customs, therefore they are the individuals who should be held accountable. Please contact these officials repeatedly: Granville Correctional Institution warden, James Williams - 919-575-3070 (call main line and ask for warden's office) Granville CI C-1 Unit Manager Eldridge Walker- 919-575-3070 (call main line and ask to be connected to Unit Manager Eldridge Walker) NCDAC Dep. Director of Rehabilitation/Correctional Services Maggie Brewer - maggie.brewer@dac.nc.gov - 919-733-2126 (call main line and ask to be connected to Brewer's office) NADAC Internal Affairs Director Anthony Smith - 919-715-2632 anthony.smith1@dac.nc.gov Script for calling and emailing: "I am (calling/emailing) to demand that prisoners being held in solitary confinement in the C-1 building be afforded the opportunity to shower and exercise outside according to NCDAC's policies and procedures and pursuant to their U.S. Constitutional rights. I am demanding that an internal investigation be conducted at the Granville Correctional concerning the grievances being made by prisoners there and I demand warden James Williams and C-1 unit manager he held accountable for the deliberate indifference they have demonstrated." . ... . ..
