This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast presents an interview with prolific percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, and vocalist Mike Dillon. How many artists have been praised as a “punk rock provocateur,” “jazz vibraphone visionary,” and “percussion virtuoso”? There's only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool of Primus, Rickie Lee Jones, Dean Ween Group, and Ani Difranco, and collaborations such as Nolatet, Garage a Trois, The Dead Kenny G's, Critters Buggin, or bands he has led, including Mike Dillon Band, Mike Dillon's New Orleans Punk Rock Percussion Consortium, Billy Goat, and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for three decades now. Over the past decade, Mike Dillon has released a number of acclaimed albums, intertwining a range of influences from Zappa-esque eccentricity to Fishbone punk funk, D.C. Go-Go to Milt Jackson-influenced vibraphone majesty. His latest project, a trio that goes by the name Punkadelick, features Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica, and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Nth Power) on drums, cymbals, and vocals. Punkadelick's latest album, Inflorescence, is an expansive 10-track collection, focused and fearless, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament, and the 'anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. In this episode host Michael Shields and Mike Dillon discuss the genesis of Punkadelick and what it's like creating music with phenomenal talents such as Brian Haas and Nikki Glaspie. They discuss the botanical influence behind the album's title, life on the road amid their current tour, the forthcoming tour with Les Claypool and The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, and so much more. Keith Kenny is one of the most monstrous guitar players you'll ever hear.  We sat down recently to discuss his career and the many Plungeworthy moments of being a touring musician.   We also get into some of our shared adventures in Southeast Asia, his musical friendship with Dean Ween and how he contributed a song to the Eagles of Death Metal's Play it Forward campaign which benefited victims of the Paris terrorist attacks.  Keith's shared the stage with the likes of John Butler Trio, Keller Williams, WEEN, The Dean Ween Group, Leon Russell, John Hammond Jr., New Riders of the Purple Sage and John Kadlecik (Further & Dark Star Orchestra). In January of 2016, The Eagles of Death Metal released Kenny's version of "I Love You All The Time" as a part of their Pay it Forward Campaign to raise money for the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks.  In his latest album, 2021's “Lifetime Ago Motel”, Keith bares his soul over a tapestry of killer guitar work, driving percussion and nuanced songwriting. This is part 2. If you haven't listened to part 1, I suggest you do so before you listen to this one. To some Ween fans, Fred Moore, aka August Forming, needs no introduction. But for those not in the know, let me tell you how it is. Fred's been taping Ween shows for more than twenty years, with his taping work reaching legendary status. This guy's been there, done that, and's got the stories to prove it! In part two, we continue to discuss the evolution of Fred's own music, and how he finally broke the “Leave Deaner Alone” mantra to get up the gumption to ask Deaner if he'd jam. The answer was, “I thought you'd never ask.” It was awesome hearing Fred talk about actually recording and working with Deaner at his private studio, as well as playing live with Deaner, and his fly-on-the-wall experience with the production of the Dean Ween Group album (Fred's pic made the album art!) Of course, we also talked about WEEN: his favorite album, his experiences as a Ween taper, especially for rare shows like the Concert for Claude, and we waxed philosophical about what the future might hold for new Ween music. You'll want to hear what Fred had to say! And for the true New Hope insider, we also discussed the history of the Invitational at John and Peter's, (here is a link to Fred's youtube page where he discusses the Invitational in depth) as well as temporary exile across the street to Mojito's. We finished up by discussing Fred's live streaming work during the pandemic, groundbreaking awesomeness for sure! It was a blast chatting with Fred, and we hope you enjoy it! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/weencastpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/weencastpodcast/support

In 1986, while attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he met fellow schoolmate and drummer Scott Byrne and through a love of similar music, they started the rock band Instant Death in 1991. Instant Death dissolved with the passing of Byrne in 2005. In 1997, Dave joined Ween. Of course Dean Ween is one of the founders of Ween, a band that has been putting out albums since 1990, though they haven’t had any new albums in a while. But he's also the leader of the Dean Ween Group, which just put out a new record, called "Rock 2." Now, my conversation with Dean is interesting. This was my second time talking to him, and I think he’s generally a friendly, funny, and gregarious guy. But I think you’ll notice that he’s also a little wary about delving too deep into his relationship with Gene Ween, his long-time partner in Ween. The state of their reunion is good but perhaps fragile. But Dean has plenty to say about this own music and his renewed passion for touring. I also talk with Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic.com about Ween's career and our favorite Ween albums.

If the name Michael Melchiondo does not ring a bell, it’s because he is known professionally by his stage name of Dean Ween, one half of the band Ween, who for nearly 30 years—along with Gene Ween (whose real name is Aaron Freeman)—have been releasing into the world a very unique style of music. Deaner (as he is also known) is currently touring with the Dean Ween Group—which features all of the touring members of Ween, minus Gener—and the Dean Ween Group have an album called Rock2, coming out in March. The full lineup of Ween has also recently announced their first show of the summer at Red Rocks in Colorado on June 5th. Melchiondo and Freeman met in 1984, adopting the Ween surname in their early teenage years, but for Melchiondo, his love for music began with his father.
