This week we're discussing every album by the one and only Ween. Made up of Gene and Dean Ween (real names Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo), Ween is one of the most impossible bands to pigeonhole. Garage rock, funk, folk, hard rock, tropical, pirate sea shanties, prog rock, psychedelic—this is only a taste of all the styles these guys frequently hop between. And they do so with complete sincerity and unmatched songwriting. A one of a kind band.Closing track: “Buckingham Green” from The Mollusk (1997)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:The Mollusk (1997) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteThe Pod (1991) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Quebec (2003) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteShinola, Vol. 1 (2005) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…GodWeenSatan: The Oneness (1990)The Pod (1991)Pure Guava (1992)Chocolate and Cheese (1994)12 Golden Country Greats (1996)The Mollusk (1997)White Pepper (2000)Quebec (2003)Shinola, Vol. 1 (2005)La Cucaracha (2007)

Keith Kenny is one of the most monstrous guitar players you'll ever hear. We sat down recently to discuss his career and the many Plungeworthy moments of being a touring musician. We also get into some of our shared adventures in Southeast Asia, his musical friendship with Dean Ween and how he contributed a song to the Eagles of Death Metal's Play it Forward campaign which benefited victims of the Paris terrorist attacks. Keith's shared the stage with the likes of John Butler Trio, Keller Williams, WEEN, The Dean Ween Group, Leon Russell, John Hammond Jr., New Riders of the Purple Sage and John Kadlecik (Further & Dark Star Orchestra). In January of 2016, The Eagles of Death Metal released Kenny's version of "I Love You All The Time" as a part of their Pay it Forward Campaign to raise money for the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks. In his latest album, 2021's “Lifetime Ago Motel”, Keith bares his soul over a tapestry of killer guitar work, driving percussion and nuanced songwriting. En este episodio nuestro equipo conversa sobre "Songs For The Deaf" de Queens Of The Stone Age, revisando sus canciones, la formación de la banda que grabó el disco, el aporte de cada músico al desarrollo de este, y muchos temas más.
Our 2nd foray into the rock and roll enigma that is Ween, this time diving into their sixth studio album The Mollusk with special guest and super-fan Les Norris. Pegged as a favorite by both Gene and Dean Ween - as well as purportedly being the inspiration for Spongebob Squarepants - it's a dark but surprisingly tuneful multi-genre concept album that flits from psychedelia to sea shanties as only they can. "Bring forth the mollusk, cast unto me Let's be forever, let forever be free" Songs featured in this episode: Loop de Loop - Ween; Chances When - Radiobaghdad; Shakedown Street - Grateful Dead; Brain Damage - Pink Floyd; Spongebob Squarepants Theme Song - Patrick Pinney; Are My Ears On Straight? - Gayla Peevey; I'm Dancing In The Show Tonight, The Mollusk - Ween; I've Seen All Good People - Yes; Wonderboy - Tenacious D; Polka Dot Tail, I'll Be Your Johnny On The Spot - Ween; Spinning Wheel - Blood Sweat & Tears; Octopus - Syd Barrett; My Monkey - Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids; Mutilated Lips, The Blarney Stone, It's Gonna Be Alright, The Golden Eel - Ween; Green Machine - Kyuss; Doctor Rock (live) - Ween; The Unquiet Grave - Luke Kelly; Cold Blows The Wind, Pink Eye (On My Leg), Waving My Dick In The Wind - Ween; Jar Of Cardinals - Guided By Voices; Buckingham Green, Ocean Man, Pollo Asado, She Wanted To Leave - Ween; Sears & Applebees - Les Norris
When Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo - better known by their respective stage names Gene and Dean Ween of the band Ween - were given full reign of a professional recording studio for their 4th studio album, they rose to the occasion and crafted 1994's "Chocolate and Cheese". This week's guest, teacher and poet Josh Medsker, joins us as we attempt to dissect this weirdly wonderful, schizophrenic slab. Songs featured in this episode: What Deaner Was Talking About (Peel Session) - Ween; (For A While) I Couldn't Play My Guitar Like A Man - Aaron Freeman; Anchorage - Michelle Shocked; Push Th' Little Daisies - Ween; Punk's Not Dead - The Exploited; Piss Up A Rope - Ween; Man, It's So Loud In Here - They Might Be Giants; Take Me Away, Spinal Meningitis - Ween; Highway Star - Deep Purple; Freedom of '76, I Can't Put My Finger On It - Ween; Such A Scream - Tom Waits; Roses Are Free - Phish; Roses Are Free, Birthday Boy, Baby Bitch, Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony, Drifter In The Dark - Ween; Ace Of Long Nights - Umphry's McGee; Voodoo Lady, Candi, Buenas Tardes Amigo, The HIV Song, What Deaner Was Talking About, Don't Shit Where You Eat, What Deaner Was Talking About (Live in Toronto) - Ween
As broadcast November 17, 2021 with plenty of extra munchies for podcast sojourners. On this episode, The Barretta Brothers take questions from the Live Youtube chat, while they watch old projects, home movies and TV sabotage videos. They welcome their life-long friend, musician, Ben Chatrer. ABOUT OUR HOSTS: Gene Barretta & Bill Barretta “What are they up to now?” That was the popular question around their house and neighborhood while growing up. It was not unusual to see Gene and Bill dressed up in homemade costumes – filming Super 8mm dramas – attempting risky stunts in the ravine – animating GI Joes and weird-looking clay figures – building and performing clunky puppets – drawing offbeat comics, - and imitating The Beatles. Today, life isn't very different. In addition to personal projects and various acting roles, Bill has been a director, writer, producer and core performer with The Muppets for nearly 30 years. Gene is an award-winning author and illustrator of children's books. He has also animated and illustrated for Sesame Street, Between the Lions, and The Jim Henson Company. The best part of their careers is that they occasionally get to work together! Unfortunately, no one will pay them to imitate The Beatles. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Ben Chatrer Ben Chatrer has played his eclectic songs on The Gong Show, The Uncle Floyd Show, and Japanese T.V. More recently, he's opened for Foxygen. Andy Partridge of XTC is a fan. Dean Ween guests on his three CDs.
In this episode of DISPOSABLE HEROES, I sit down with Jess Margera, the hammer of a drummer for the one and only CKY. We chat about his influential upbringing in Pennsylvania, getting signed to Volcom, his fateful meeting with Dean Ween, to playing with the spirit of Prince, and all the magic that unfolded from there. You won't want to miss this very special episode, so tune out and tune in, and be sure to check him out online at Instagram.com/jessmargera.
Get your passports stamped, 'cos we're going to Brown Town! In one of the most hotly contested debates in Chartographers history, Evan, Tarna, and special guests (and Chartographers All-Stars) J.C. Welcome CHRIS HARFORD (Band of Changes, BlancDUBlanc) to Episode 044! What an honor & a privilege to host such an esteemed rock n' roll troubadour to the show. Prepare for a lengthy, profound powwow with more rabbit holes than you can shake a chalice at. Ep.044 also includes a short, sweet tribute to the late, great Shock G of Digital Underground, the East-Bay psychedelic funksta/hip-hop pioneer/Humpty Hump who recently passed away at just 57 years young. @ 5min: News! KRAZ Plus One + Upful Life = The Guest List @ 9min: Shock G R.I.P. Tribute @ 22min: Introducing CHRIS HARFORD / @ 27min : Interview Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Harford is a man of many talents, and wears numerous artistic hats. The veteran-rocker checks in from Central Jersey, and unpacks his own fascinating journey in progress. For over 90 minutes, Harford earnestly reveals an abundance of perspective. Among the more fulfilling conversations I've had the pleasure of hosting in the podcast medium. Right off the top, we go ham singing the praises of reggae music and its medicinal, spiritual qualities, especially in times of peril. The erstwhile sound-scientist expounds on his dub reggae syndicate BlancDUBlanc, before we hop in the wayback machine to the Elektra Records era with Chris Harford & the First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Plus a special Nov.2000 Amfibian show in Burlington VT, with Tom Marshall and Trey Anastasio, one of the first JamBase reviews yours truly ever published. From Bob Marley at the Philly Spectrum in '79, to Richard Thompson and Lee Perry working on his records, from London to Boston, New Hope PA and Hopewell, New Jersey too, Chris explores what it means to be in a Band of Changes, as he details his deep, filial roots with the likes of Sir Joe Russo, Scott Metzger, Marco Benevento, Chuck Treece, Dana Colley, Dean Ween, Robbie Seahag Mangano, plus the STAX-like scene and studio coming together with these cats (and more!) in the fertile Garden State soil. One of the more unbelievable tales Chris unspools is the story behind his dub-cover EP of "Wind of Change", yep, you read that right, the titanic political power ballad from the halcyon days of the hair-band era. This is my favorite part in a conversation filled with choice nuggets. All that jazz plus a tribute to Shock G of Digital Underground, who recently transitioned, truly a gut punch in a pandemic-year that seemingly never ends. It's hard to keep up, or even grieve, with so much loss, however I felt called to send my man Shock G (Gregory Jacobs) up with his propers, and his flowers. Long Live this Son of the P! You know the definition of an ear worm? That song you can't help but get stuck in your head? This episode isn't really like that. It's more of something you hear once, nod along with, and then feel ok with only going back to like once every 2 years. So, you know, pretty good. The podcast you knew was coming one day is finally here. The Jo(h)n's review one of Shaggy's all time favorite bands- Ween and their 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese. The boys go over the bands unique approach, their place on the joke vs serious band spectrum, Dean Ween guitar licks, and how the band balances ultra uncomfortable topics with catchy lyrics. Gene and Dean Ween are the best songwriting duo since Jagger and Richards, or Lennon and McCartney, or maybe it's Rogers and Hammerstein. You get the point. They are geniuses. Their canon features hundreds and hundreds of songs played to perfection in every genre. Sometimes these songs are drenched in feedback or feature pitch-adjusted vocals. Other times they play Dylanesque odes to former lovers that are a delicate as an orchid. There are songs about golden eels and children born without eyes. They have half a dozen songs about equine friends. They are as adept at speed-freak metal as they are Irish drinking songs. They even did a full country album. Deaner can wow you with his virtuosity on guitar and Gener could get a four-chair turn on The Voice. Ween can do it all. There is really no sampling of Ween that could give you an adequate understanding of what they are capable of. Nonetheless, here are a bakers' dozen of songs to whet your appetite:"Birthday Boy" from God, Ween, Satan: The Oneness"Dr. Rock" from The Pod"Push th' Little Daisies" and "The Stallion (pt 3)" from Pure Guava"Take Me Away," "Baby Bitch," "Buenas Tardes, Amigo," and "What Deaner Was Talking About" from Chocolate & Cheese"Piss Up a Rope" from 12 Golden Country Greats"The Golden Eel" and "Buckingham Green" from The Mollusk"Stay Forever" from White Pepper"Your Party" from La CucharachaOr you can dive in just about anywhere. The full albums Chocolate & Cheese, The Mollusk, and White Pepper are the most accessible and consistently great albums, while the others get a little brown. Ween also has tons of "unreleased" music and their concerts are epic.Support the show (https://teespring.com/stores/the-new-dad-rock)

Adding another facet to their Ween-centric offerings, God Ween Evan kicks off a periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. First up is Chris “Tomato” Harfenist, best known for being the lead singer and drummer for the alternative rock band Sound of Urchin. Tomato also plays drums in the Dean Ween fronted band The Moistboyz, as well as in Crescent Moon with Dave Dreiwitz. In this episode GWE’s Will Nunziata and Tomato discuss how Tomato got involved with Ween, the “golden ear” of A & R legend Steve Ralbovsky, when Tomato was “summoned by The D" (Tenacious D), Tomato playing live with Ween and The Moistboyz, and a must hear story that involved the Ween fan-favorite “Someday.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode 186: In honor of Mother's Day, today we're bringing you a story from one of our favorites, Denver comedian and writer Allison Rose. Born on a quiet farm in Kansas, Allison came into her own on the loud stages of Denver dive bars. She has been featured on the Denver edition of 50 First Jokes; Yuck Fest; and the High Plains, Red Clay, and Savage Henry comedy festivals. She co-hosts the Denver chapter of We Still Like You, a storytelling show where folks share their greatest shames, and a weekly showcase at Dean Ween's Honeypot Lounge. Allison's story was recorded on 17 October 2018 at Buntport Theater; the theme of the evening was "Guts." A very special thanks to PHIE, who provided the outro music for this episode. Happy Halloween and welcome to the October edition of the Transmissions podcast. Hope you enjoyed our bonus podcast episode, featuring AD’s Halloween mix. If you haven’t heard it, check your feed or MixCloud. It’s essential listening. Our topics today aren’t quite as spooky, but they’re good nonetheless. First, Kurt Vile. Earlier this month he released his seventh lp, the beatific Bottle It In via Matador Records. He swung by the AD HQ to sit down with Justin and discuss the new record, recording with Dean Ween of Ween, the influence of Sonic Youth, working with Kim Gordon, and how collaborating with his “sister” Courtney Barnett helped shape the new album. The edited version of our talk is up now, but here’s the full spiel, uncut and undiluted. Then, we’re dive into the ECM Records vaults to discuss the first installment of the AD guide to the long-running jazz, classical, and experimental music label. And finally, we sit down with Aquarium Drunkard contributor Jay Steel of General General to discuss his label and Vinyl Me Please’s recent reissue of New Orleans pianist James Booker’s Lost Paramount Tapes.
Today's guest is our good buddy Katie Smith! Katie is a social worker with excellent musical tastes. Topics of discussion include her adventures in Vietnam, kids making their own cereal, and friends who throw their underwear at Gene and Dean Ween. Plus in the intro, JJ and Tucker talk at length about the untapped pleasures of Bingo. Help support JJ Meets World by donating to our Patreon! http://www.patreon.com/jjmeetsworld
Drew Fortune has written for Rolling Stone, Spin, Pitchfork, Billboard and Vanity Fair to name a few. He's spent the day at Paul Westerberg's house, fished with Dean Ween and had a misunderstanding with Ryan Adams. He's currently in the process of writing a book called No Encore which documents the most infamous gigs as told by Wayne Kramer, Robert Pollard, Alice Cooper and countess others. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Dean Ween is one of the most celebrated cult musicians in rock. As one half of the musical duo/band Ween, he helped craft a truly eclectic (and humorous) mix of prog rock, punk, metal, psychedelia, soul and more, as evidenced on classic albums like Chocolate and Cheese and The Mollusk. Dean is back with Rock2, his sophomore solo release with The Dean Ween band (released March 16th via Schnitzel Records). In this week's episode, we discuss his new album, his creative process, some hilarious insight into the lyrical inspiration behind select tracks, as well as what's next for Ween in 2018. So take a listen to hear "What Deaner Was Talking About"! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/slis/support
Of course Dean Ween is one of the founders of Ween, a band that has been putting out albums since 1990, though they haven’t had any new albums in a while. But he's also the leader of the Dean Ween Group, which just put out a new record, called "Rock 2." Now, my conversation with Dean is interesting. This was my second time talking to him, and I think he’s generally a friendly, funny, and gregarious guy. But I think you’ll notice that he’s also a little wary about delving too deep into his relationship with Gene Ween, his long-time partner in Ween. The state of their reunion is good but perhaps fragile. But Dean has plenty to say about this own music and his renewed passion for touring. I also talk with Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic.com about Ween's career and our favorite Ween albums.
If the name Michael Melchiondo does not ring a bell, it’s because he is known professionally by his stage name of Dean Ween, one half of the band Ween, who for nearly 30 years—along with Gene Ween (whose real name is Aaron Freeman)—have been releasing into the world a very unique style of music. Deaner (as he is also known) is currently touring with the Dean Ween Group—which features all of the touring members of Ween, minus Gener—and the Dean Ween Group have an album called Rock2, coming out in March. The full lineup of Ween has also recently announced their first show of the summer at Red Rocks in Colorado on June 5th. Melchiondo and Freeman met in 1984, adopting the Ween surname in their early teenage years, but for Melchiondo, his love for music began with his father.
