*During the early part of quarantine in 2020, DJ Domo sat down for my new video series, Black + Nuanced in HD, an extension of my podcast, Black + Nuanced.* DJ Domo puts on for the DMV area but her journey hasn't always been easy. We met during Power Rising Conference in 2018. Having been featured on her Women in Radio panel in DC for her company, Girlaaa World, it was only right to follow up with her. We waxed poetic about her story to DJ'ing, the opportunity that led her to curate the DMV playlist for Apple Music, #DontMuteDC campaign, and elevating others through Girlaaa World and other things. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blacknuancedpod/support

Remember when you got home from school as a kid? You would run in the house to jump on the computer and start off by playing solitaire & pinball as a warmup. Then it was time for the main event... Jumping online to hop on AOL. After patiently waiting through loud screeching noises for 10 minutes due to having dialup, its finally the moment of truth. You get online and hear those three famous words "you've got mail." You are excited beyond belief, but just as you're about to start chatting away on AOL messenger you hear a shout from down the hall "get off the computer I need to use the phone." Can you believe that for many of us this was our lives? Since then the internet has grown beyond our wildest dreams & has given birth to the new era called social media. Social media has been viewed as both a gift & a curse. Today we are talking about the good, bad & ugly of social media and how it effects families and relationships. With the boom of social media it has caused many of us to interact with people far less often and caused us to rely on technology as our sole source of communication. With that being said we dissect the impacts of social media as a whole. Lastly we also take the time to shed light on Washington DC's #DontMuteDC movement and the impact of Go-Go in the communities.

For as long as anyone can remember , Go-Go music , has served not only as a sonic identity for the capital of the country but also as a cultural index for the region much like Hip-Hop was for cities like New York and gang banging in areas like Los Angeles. From the dances to the style of dress, Go-Go has defined the identity in Washington for generations of urban youth for close to five decades. In recent years tho, with the introduction of mass gentrification throughout the region, we have seen the systematic efforts to eradicate the DMV area of its musical pastime. First the elimination of Go-Go in Prince George’s county, a suburb of Washington, D.C., next the attempt to eliminate live music outside in areas like Gallery Place - Chinatown and more. This year we saw the biggest attack on the culture in recent years. In an attempt to silence the music playing from a local Go-Go record and cell phone store, we saw the community forced to unite like never before. Thought by many to be a dying genre, it was the threat of termination that ironically gave it new life. It was then that groups like #LongLiveGoGo and #DontMuteDC emerged to be leaders in the cause to draw awareness. With us this episode is one of the founders of #LLGG and creators of the biggest free outdoor musical event this city has seen in decades, Moe’chella...with all eyes on Go-Go and the cities music scene thriving like never before, this is only the beginning, what we going do with it. In recent years, Washington D.C.'s Shaw neighborhood has steadily grown whiter and wealthier, resulting in tension between natives and transplants. This spring, it seemed to had reached a boiling point with the constant dog walkers allowing their pets to defecate on the sacred landmarks at Howard University and luxury apartment complex The Shay complaining about the Gogo music being played out of the Metro PCS store on the corner of Flordia Ave and 7th St. From there, the #DontMuteDC movement was born, and rapper and activist Yaddiya created several peaceful rallies. Tatyana Jenene sat down with Yaddiya to talk about the Long Live Gogo movement along with the now-infamous Moechella and more. Song of the week: Yaddiya ft. Yung Gleesh "30K." This week we're talking about Gentrification. What inspired us to talk about this subject is the incident that recently happened in Washington D.C. at a Metro PCS store (If you haven't heard about it, we explained it in the beginning of this episode) that started the #DontMuteDC movement. We realized that although D.C. is a long way away from Atlanta, this is not new or unique and wanted to explore some of the effects of gentrification from the ground level. So, we spoke about this topic from 2 perspectives: #1. As black people who have been and have family that have been affected by gentrification and #2. As real estate investors that have tried to mitigate some of the damage caused during this process, and simultaneously educate and reinvest in the areas targeted around Atlanta. We tried to keep this light-hearted because it's so easy to get pissed about this (and we have been), but we felt like this is the time to make incremental changes instead of just getting angry.

Along side us was the Gordon Parks of our time and city, Dee Dwyer.
