**One of the ways we talked about how to make money from your computer is content creation adn affiliate marketing, but first you need a niche. When looking for a niche consider: 1) what do you know, what do you have experience in 2) what do you like, what are you passionate about 3) what problems can you solve, what frustrations can you offer a solution for Needs Wants Desires Fears Local product or service missing and needed. **Robin Singh is a LAZY MASTERMIND. In this episode we see how his laziness was the key to his success as an online entrepreneur. He started out as a "hacker and a freaker" in India.** Eventually ended up in the US because of a misspelling in an e-mail.(another story for another time Because of his computer skill xp, began selling software - a program that would extract files (photos, sounds, etc) from flash. He promised a 6 hour delivery but hated due dates. He hated waking up or getting interrupted in his daily life. He was sick of it. So he found a way to auto deliver software purchases Thus E-Junkie was born . Initially E-Junkie only supported PayPal, but eventually Google Checkout approached them, so they decided to become a shopping cart platform. He didn't chase Google down. He waited, procrastinated, and they came to him. Later, while relaxing by himself out in nature, in leisure, he had an epiphany where he realized what his greater purpose was - to eliminate consumption as much as possible and create a place that minimizes human and animal labor and suffering. That's when Peepal Farm came about. Some key points he makes about the Lazy Mindset: • He wanted to make money by doing nothing • Didn't want to "sell his hours for money" • $0 marketing budget. Relied on Word of Mouth Marketing. "Get people to do the marketing for you" • Focus on GENUINE one on one connections outside your circle of friends and family to create "weak links" • Find something you're interested in and someone doing well at it, then reach out. • Don' be afraid of not hearing back from people • Don't be a task monkey. • Hone in on what you want (not material). Look where you want to go • You can either purchase lazy freedom or purchase a "thing" that you must work to pay off. • Saving money is easier than working for it. • When you're working, you're not building something. You're building it for something else. • Cut out anything that's unnecessary. Don't follow consumption patterns • Advertisements are designed to seduce you • Things and money are just symbols of success and not actual success • The best luxury money can buy you is freedom • "The best ideas come from leisure time. You're not gonna [be] coming up with great ideas while you'r e slaving away in front of a machine from 9-5. You're gonna have a great idea when you're just chilling somewhere, like hanging out in nature." • If you're going for financial freedom, you have to decide what you're going to do with that freedom • "I am absolutely lazy. I just want to sit" • Even if you don't consume anything materialistic, you still need to eat. Even if you're vegan (like Robin) and eat just a bowl rice, someone somewhere down the line is putting in labor and suffering. • "My life comes at a cost to others" • "I have all this time (excess time) and I'm going to use it to help others" • Lower consumption not to lower materialism but to lower suffering • Laziness is not "I don't want to work." It's somewhat of a fear. Do what you want • Work is a feeling, like home is a feeling more than a place • Embrace procrastination. It's just nature's way of telling you what's important. When Spotify showed up and interrupted his revenue stream, Jack Conte didn't roll over, he found a way to to help all creators. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients so here's one of those. [Seaside Plumbing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple, and Stephen whispered today's topic into my ear, and then hit the record button and away we go. This is a new one. This is one of those internet companies that has been a disruptive force, a revolutionary force in a lot of ways about how people go about raising money and sustaining artistic endeavors. We're going to talk about Patreon today. Stephen Semple: Yeah, Patreon was founded on May 2nd, 2013. Yeah, relatively new company by Jack Conte from the band, Pomplamoose, and a school buddy of his Sam Yam. If Jack was here, he would say it was not a disruptive force. He would say it was a helpful force. Dave Young: Oh, I agree. I'm just saying a disruptive, not like an Uber or an Airbnb where it's disruptive and upsets a whole industry, but in a way that disrupts the way maybe you could fund your band or fund an artistic endeavor. It's almost a throwback to Renaissance days when artists had patrons. That's where they got their name. Stephen Semple: Right. Dave Young: You would have rich people that would say, "I love what you're doing, and keep doing it. Here's some money every month." Stephen Semple: Yeah, yeah. Just keep being you. Dave Young: Yeah, I think it's a beautiful thing, a beautiful platform. Stephen Semple: It's really interesting how it came to be because today it's valued at over a billion dollars, and there's 200,000 content creators and artists, musicians that are on the platform, 400 employees. They have 3 million monthly active patrons on the platform. Dave Young: Yeah, it's pretty amazing. Stephen Semple: It supports a lot of people you know and people you don't, including organizations like the Whiskey Vault. Supports the distillery. Both Sam and Jack had this mutual love of music, and they were roommates in Stanford University, and Sam studied computer science. When he was in Stanford, he had this little internet burger business, pre DoorDash. He would take burger orders and go get them. There was one time he found himself pulling into a drive through at night and ordering over a hundred burgers at a time. While Sam was doing that, Jack studied music in college, and Jack had actually started in physics and decided he didn't like it and rolled over into music. He was an artist and interested in being a full-time artist. In college, he was doing movies and soundtracks for movies. In 2006, they both graduated and Sam goes to work in tech startup and Jack starts a band with his girlfriend, now wife, Natalie. This is where Jack is a really interesting person because Jack had been watching YouTube. He would wonder if he could use it to get views. He would put up these videos of him playing music in his bedroom, and he sold MP3s online for a few hundred bucks a month on E-Junkie. He felt like he could make money on music and when iTunes came out, this was a game changer because of the ease of now selling music. What he realized was, at its heart, YouTube is a search engine. If you post a cover of a song that is popular, and if it's a good cover, it will get people watching it and if they like it, they will look for your other music and then go and buy it on iTunes. This was working pretty well.

Reason #1 Traffic Start benefitting from all the traffic generated by your show by directing listeners to your website instead of Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Pandora. Tools like Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, and Hot Jar can help to provide demographics of people who visit your website. Reason #2 Collect Emails Email services, like MailChimp, Constant Contact, and AWeber can help you manage your email list. Email and phone numbers are vital to the success of every business even in the age of social media. Social Media certainly has its pros and cons but when service is disrupted or a Social Media Site ceases to exist, you still need to be able to contact your audience. Facebook has been known to shut down groups without notice or explaining their reasons. If your preferred Social Media site shut down, deleted your group, or banned you, would you still be able to be in touch with your audience? Reason #3 Sell Your Stuff It's easier to sell your products and services when you have a website. In today's Q&A, we are helping Beth Anne figure out how to simply sell digital products on her Wordpress website. Do you have a question you want answered on our podcast? We would love to help you! Click here to ask your question! [Tweet "Best way to sell digital products on your Wordpress blog."] Resources Mentioned in this Episode Today's question from Beth Anne Aretto E-Junkie Gumroad Easy Digital Downloads Let's dive into this week's question! JOCELYN: Hey guys! Welcomes to today's Q and A mini podcast. I still have no voice so apologies for that. Today's question is from Beth Anne Aretto. I hope I said that right Beth Anne and she says that: I have some digital products I want to sell but I haven't figured out the best plug in or way to do it on my WordPress blog, what would you recommend? SHANE: Alright. There are a lot of different ways to sell digital products online. If you are just selling PDF or something like that probably the easiest solution is something like ejunkie.com or gumroad.com. Those are services that basically let you go in and you can log in to your system. They let you upload your product to their servers and they will basically give you a piece of code that you can copy and paste anywhere on your website and when people click that little button or the sales button it will pop up and it will handle the transactions for you. You usually have to link those to your PayPal account but both of those services have really good instructions on how to do that. It's not really hard. You just go on to PayPal. There is like a big key that you copy and that you paste that in to Gumroad or E-junkie and you are off to the races. I actually use E-junkie with coachxo.com because I don't have a lot of products on that site. If you have something like 10 to 20, maybe less than 10 let's say that—if you have 10 to 20 products, something less than that, E-junkie or Gumroad is all you need. All you have to do is go upload the product, set the price, copy and paste the code into your blog post or over in your sidebar and you are ready to sell and deliver those digital products. So if you want to get started as quick as possible that's what I would do. I would just go and do something simple. Don't worry about setting up a big plug in and doing all that. That will get your product for sale ASAP. But if you get quite a few products or you know you product vine is going to grow or if you need to track that better and you want to like really look at your sales report and see what's happening, you might need an onsite solution and Jocelyn actually uses one for her Elementary Librarian site. JOCELYN: Yeah I have a lot of products on that site and so I decided that I was going to get a plug in and the one that I use on Elementary Librarian is called easy digital downloads. There are actually a charge for it. I am not exactly sure of the price. I want to say it's under $100. There are several different extensions that you can add on to it and basically those are just extra little things that give it different functionality if you want it to do a variety of different tasks. But you can start out the very basic thing. That would be a great place to start. JOCELYN: A plug in like easy digital downloads is good if you want to have just a one-time cost. Products like E-Junkie or Gumroad, the more products you have the more they are going to charge you for their services. I think it's like a monthly fee. Is that right? SHANE: Yeah it is. Yeah JOCELYN: Yeah so if you know that you are going to have a lot more products or you're eventually going to have a lot more and you don't want to pay that monthly fee you may want to go with a plug in type service. I've really like easy digital downloads. It's really easy to use and you basically just upload your files in, you name your products and it will put them in a shopping cart for you. The good thing about the pug in is that there are lots of documentat...
