Today's inductee into the 2024 Enrollify Hall of Fame is Kin Sajpal, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at the University of Redlands. We revisit Kin's groundbreaking insights on audience engagement, tailored marketing strategies, and fostering collaboration between enrollment and marketing teams. From innovative approaches to international student recruitment to the transformative "OneGrad" campaign, this episode is a masterclass in strategic higher ed marketing.Check out the full episodes Kin appeared on: Pulse Check: Finding Your Why — Part 1Pulse Check: Navigating International Recruitment — Part 1 Breaking Silos - Episode 6Key TakeawaysHarnessing Student Perspectives: Engaging students as collaborators in strategic planning enhances relevance and impact.Word-of-Mouth Marketing for International Students: Traditional and digital word-of-mouth remain pivotal for international recruitment.Tailored Campaigns by Segmentation: Deep segmentation—domestic and international—is essential for resonating with diverse audiences.Unified Branding for Greater ROI: Holistic campaigns like "OneGrad" and a university-level focus drive better results at lower costs.Enrollment-Marketing Collaboration: Transparent data-sharing and aligned goals foster efficiency and success in recruitment efforts.Episode SummaryHow Can Institutions Engage Students in Strategic Planning? Kin Sajpal highlights the power of inviting students into strategic conversations. By leveraging the expertise and experiences of student workers, institutions can refine their programs to better meet audience needs. This approach doesn't just apply to social media teams but extends across campus functions, creating a more comprehensive understanding of student expectations. Kin emphasizes the importance of viewing programs as "products" and ensuring their applicability across different student demographics. Her message underscores the enduring role of student input in crafting meaningful, audience-centric strategies. What Role Does Word-of-Mouth Play in International Recruitment? Drawing from her own journey as an international student, Kin advocates for the power of word-of-mouth marketing—both in traditional face-to-face interactions and through digital channels. She notes that while the mediums may evolve, the core principle remains: personal recommendations significantly influence decisions. Institutions must design programs with intentionality, ensuring they resonate across cultural nuances. This involves segmenting international audiences beyond broad geographic categories and investing time in understanding micro-segments to unlock high ROI.How Does Unified Branding Amplify Enrollment Success? Kin shares the University of Redlands' transition to unified branding campaigns like "OneGrad." By consolidating efforts into broader campaigns rather than field-specific ones, the university achieved cost efficiencies and better enrollment outcomes. These campaigns align recruitment and marketing efforts, providing prospective students with cohesive messaging. Kin also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between marketing and enrollment teams, where regular data-sharing allows both sides to adapt strategies dynamically and maximize results. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. **Robin Singh is a LAZY MASTERMIND. In this episode we see how his laziness was the key to his success as an online entrepreneur. He started out as a "hacker and a freaker" in India.** Eventually ended up in the US because of a misspelling in an e-mail.(another story for another time Because of his computer skill xp, began selling software - a program that would extract files (photos, sounds, etc) from flash. He promised a 6 hour delivery but hated due dates. He hated waking up or getting interrupted in his daily life. He was sick of it. So he found a way to auto deliver software purchases Thus E-Junkie was born . Initially E-Junkie only supported PayPal, but eventually Google Checkout approached them, so they decided to become a shopping cart platform. He didn't chase Google down. He waited, procrastinated, and they came to him. Later, while relaxing by himself out in nature, in leisure, he had an epiphany where he realized what his greater purpose was - to eliminate consumption as much as possible and create a place that minimizes human and animal labor and suffering. That's when Peepal Farm came about. Some key points he makes about the Lazy Mindset: • He wanted to make money by doing nothing • Didn't want to "sell his hours for money" • $0 marketing budget. Relied on Word of Mouth Marketing. "Get people to do the marketing for you" • Focus on GENUINE one on one connections outside your circle of friends and family to create "weak links" • Find something you're interested in and someone doing well at it, then reach out. • Don' be afraid of not hearing back from people • Don't be a task monkey. • Hone in on what you want (not material). Look where you want to go • You can either purchase lazy freedom or purchase a "thing" that you must work to pay off. • Saving money is easier than working for it. • When you're working, you're not building something. You're building it for something else. • Cut out anything that's unnecessary. Don't follow consumption patterns • Advertisements are designed to seduce you • Things and money are just symbols of success and not actual success • The best luxury money can buy you is freedom • "The best ideas come from leisure time. You're not gonna [be] coming up with great ideas while you'r e slaving away in front of a machine from 9-5. You're gonna have a great idea when you're just chilling somewhere, like hanging out in nature." • If you're going for financial freedom, you have to decide what you're going to do with that freedom • "I am absolutely lazy. I just want to sit" • Even if you don't consume anything materialistic, you still need to eat. Even if you're vegan (like Robin) and eat just a bowl rice, someone somewhere down the line is putting in labor and suffering. • "My life comes at a cost to others" • "I have all this time (excess time) and I'm going to use it to help others" • Lower consumption not to lower materialism but to lower suffering • Laziness is not "I don't want to work." It's somewhat of a fear. Do what you want • Work is a feeling, like home is a feeling more than a place • Embrace procrastination. It's just nature's way of telling you what's important. Like most lawyers, I went to law school because I wanted to enter an honorable profession.  I wanted to have a career where the emphasis is on intellect and not on business.  Not long after graduation, I realized that law IS a business and if you want to be successful, being a great lawyer is not enough.  You need to learn how to run your practice efficiently.  You need to learn how to manage people. And you need to learn how to sell your services.  If you can master those skills, your chances of success will greatly increase. As I've noted many times on this program, sales is one area where many of us feel uncomfortable.  As attorneys, we are supposed to be above that.  People should hire us because we are good at what we do.   In reality, that is not the way the world works.  Just like practicing law requires a unique set of skills, so does selling our services. In this episode of Counsel to Counsel, Dominic and I discuss the business of law and some of the ways we can be more successful in our sales process. Dominic Grew is the Founder & Owner of Elevate Business Coaching, LLC.  He is an expert in business management and business development.  Prior to opening Elevate, he spent more than 25 years working internationally in the insurance and investment management sectors.  As a former COO for Global Business Development, he learned how to scale to operational excellence and to prioritize and execute growth initiatives for complex and competing practice areas.  Today, as Founder of Elevate Business Coaching, he partners with law firms and their lawyers to build, grow, and manage thriving practices.   Dominic's tools of choice are coaching, training and facilitation.  He prides himself on bringing an outside perspective to the business of law, teaching attorneys to work smarter rather than harder to accomplish their business goals.  Additional Resources   Episode 100-Word of Mouth Marketing with Michael Katz Episode 74-Turning Business Conversations into Business

In this episode, I'm coming off of a string of marketing successes. Therefore, instead of interviewing someone else, I've decided to share my experiences. The Reader's Digest version is that most lawyers who achieve marketing success do so through a variety of channels. The important thing is to choose the channels where you'll find your clients and referral sources. But it is equally important to choose activities that you like. In the end, you won't be able to predict which ones will work and which ones won't.  And that is to be expected. Great products sell themselves and advertising is just the price you pay for a bad product right? Word of Mouth Marketing or WOM. Is it even a channel? Can you really grow without spending money on advertising? Can you enhance the natural rate of WOM? The TL:DR answer is Yes. Yes and Yes. Right now, budgets are getting crimped and the heat is on for high-cash burn marketing channels. And there's nothing higher cash-burn than advertising. So how do you grow a brand and sell your product without advertising? Everyone knows the most powerful growth-driver is word-of-mouth. It's especially critical for higher-involvement, more complex, higher priced products/services which require a lot of trust. There are lots of products and services which we don't exactly purchase after seeing a few ads. Especially if your brand is less known. For finance, invasive medical, real estate, estate planning, and accounting...this is especially the case. WOM hits at the core of great marketing. In fact, it's a great barometer of organic growth as well as the degree of product-market fit you have. But is it fixed? Is it just a the result of upstream activity? Can we use it as a growth channel? Is there even a playbook to make it work? Ted Wright, former Booze Allen consultant, ex-Delta Airlines global brand manager, Lecturer at Wharton, Founder and CEO of WOM marketing agency Fizz spills the beans. In this episode, you'll learn how important it is to go back to basics. Understand your core offering. Identify those who are most likely to recommend your product to others and then, put in place a program to enhance this natural process. But there's 3 factors necessary before this holy grail of marketing will work. And there's 3 product categories where it's almost impossible. We also delve into a bit of attribution and channel strategy. Especially the problems with spending money on channels which claim to contribute to sales, but don't. Something which can be easily overlooked when presented with a good-looking MMM report or a fancy digital attribution dashboard. In this episode, you'll find out: - how New Zealand sauvignon blanc became something from nothing. - which two simple Viagra ads originally catapulted the drug into popular culture - what the difference is between WOM and referrals, advocates, super fans and influencers - why getting your story right so critical - the difference between truth vs authenticity in your brand story - why brands who pay Kim Kardashian for social exposure almost never use her again - the parallels between WOM and Einstein's comments on dark matter - what rasterization is - why you should follow Steakumms on social media And finally, Find out why, word of mouth is this podcast's most powerful growth channel. All these questions and more will be answered in this interview. Just remember to tell at least one other person about this episode or Ted is going to mark me down!

Jay Baer, the author of the book, “Talk Triggers: The complete guide to creating customers with word of mouth,” joins Tim to talk about the power of word of mouth to sell products or services, increase awareness, educate the public and create a brand. Jay is a very popular keynote speaker, an inductee into the Word of Mouth Marketing Hall of Fame and the author of several books. This Encore Episode was first released in April 2019. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Word_of_Mouth_Marketing.mp3 It's a term you may hear every day. It's just assumed you know what it means. Word of Mouth.  Webster's dictionary describes it as “oral, often inadvertent publicity.” What's interesting about that definition is how the people at Webster saw fit to include the word “inadvertent” in the definition. When it comes to Word of Mouth dynamics, it's just assumed that it's inadvertent or unintentional. Many times, this is true but I've been in the PR business for decades and I've seen quite often how something that was spread through Word of Mouth was anything but inadvertent or unintentional. In this episode we talk with Jay Baer about the dynamics behind word of mouth publicity, hear some stories of some organizations doing it right, and how to harness it for yourself. Debt Collections Case Study Americollect is in the debt collection industry. At present there are roughly 8,000 collections firms in the U.S. The common practice is for debt collections agencies to call a debtor, cajole, threaten, coerce until they get money or not In 2017, consumers filed 84,500 complaints against collections agencies. Kenlyn Gretz worked for a debt collector making $4.25 per hour collecting unpaid medical debts. He worked his way up and bought the firm. Then he changed everything. He now has more than 250 employees because they embraced their tagline – “Ridiculously Nice.” Being ridiculously nice is a part of their culture. The theory – Just because they are a nonpayer today doesn't mean they will be a nonpayer tomorrow. They can call a debtor one to four months later and they take the phone calls because Americollect was nice to them. Jay tells the story of Americollect's win rate in the competitive marketplace and of one key statistic; and why 60 percent of Americollect's employees were once debtors who Americollect was assigned to recover a debt and was so nice that the people decided to go work for the company. In this episode Jay talks about companies like The Cheesecake Factory and Air New Zealand which have their own means for creating buzz around their brand. And a unique and simple story of a California restaurant called Skip's Kitchen.  What they all have in common is they have their own “talk triggers” to generate word of mouth publicity. About Talk Triggers Word of mouth is directly responsible for 19% of all purchases, and influences as much as 90%. Every human on earth relies on word of mouth to make buying decisions. Yet even today, fewer than 1% of companies have an actual strategy for generating these crucial customer conversations. Talk Triggers provides that strategy in a compelling, relevant, timely book that can be put into practice immediately, by any business. The book includes: proprietary research into why and how customers talk; more than 30 detailed case studies of extraordinary results from Doubletree Hotels by Hilton, The Cheesecake Factory, Penn & Teller and dozens of delightful small and medium-sized businesses; and the 4-5-6 learning system for creating and activating talk triggers in your business. In sync with Autism Awareness Month (April) and Day (April 2nd), listen to this inspiring conversation about How Autism Influencer and Animator Dani Bowman builds Brand Buzz through Word-of-Mouth Marketing with 8-Second Branding Podcast Host and Goody PR Founder Liz H Kelly. Dani's goal is to be the Temple Grandin “role model” of her generation by breaking barriers and encouraging others. She started her DaniMation Entertainment company at age 14, and is now working on a PhD. Through social media, Bowman openly shares her life with fans, and often gets 200-400 likes on Facebook posts. Dani also promotes her brand by actively participating in industry events, public speaking, receiving awards, having partnerships, and premiering nine animated short films at San Diego Comic-Con International over the past seven years. As a social entrepreneur, her goal is to reduce the “grim” autism unemployment numbers (90% are unemployed or under-employed, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) by empowering youth with animation skills through her classes and jobs. Dani's taught 2000+ youth on the autism spectrum and other abilities how to do animation at Joey Travolta's Inclusion Films summer boot camps and DaniMation Entertainment classes (and taught one-on-one classes during the pandemic, that will continue.) Bowman's work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Animation World Network, OC Weekly, BBC Spotlight Evening News (DaniMation UK) and more.
