When Edward Di Gangi sat down with us, we knew we were about to embark on a journey unlike any other—a quest for identity that turns the pages of the past to illuminate the present. He mesmerizes us with his narrative, one that began with his adoption during a time known as the baby scoop era and flourished into an idyllic upbringing by his loving adoptive parents. His story, detailed in "A Gift Best Given," unravels the complexities of adoption experiences and society's evolving views on the practice, punctuated by his own positive outlook and the warm embrace of family bonds that extend beyond genetics. The heart of Edward's tale lies in the artistic legacy of his biological mother, an aspiring professional ice skater with a story that could fill novels. With the scant details of an old document and the digital troves of Ancestry.com, Edward pieces together a rich tapestry of a life once hidden from him. It's a narrative punctuated by serendipitous encounters—from a photograph that finally puts a face to a name, to a visa application shedding light on her dreams and aspirations. As Edward reveals the intricate details of his mother's journey and the discoveries that led to his poignant book, our listeners are invited to witness how the convergence of past and present can enrich our understanding of self. Our conversation culminates in the emotional resonance of family reunions and the revelation of long-held secrets, as Edward recounts his encounter with an elderly woman named Isabelle, who unknowingly held the missing pieces of his lineage. Through a treasure trove of memorabilia and the endearing discovery of a half-brother, Edward's personal history becomes a kaleidoscope of shared experiences, heartfelt connections, and the enduring question of what truly makes us who we are. This episode isn't merely about tracing lineage; it's a testament to the power of human connection and the relentless pursuit of one's story, which can bring unexpected closeness and a profound sense of belonging. When it comes to the amplification of male adoptee voices, it is crucial to recognize the unique experiences and perspectives they bring to the table. Each male adoptees has a valuable role to play in helping to shape the narrative around adoption by providing insights into their own personal journeys. This last episode in the series which has us on a spectacular journey of meaningful conversations, were male adoptees have been empowered to share their stories, break down stereotypes, and contribute to a greater understanding of the adoption experience as a whole. Set in the 1940s, as America emerged from the Great Depression and went to war, Ed's memoir, The Gift Best Given, recounts the search for his family and tells the story of a young woman's courage as she overcame obstacles to achieve her dreams. Ed's biological mother's name was Genevieve Knorowski and she was an aspiring professional ice skater. She left home at the age of 17 and traveled by train to Vancouver, Canada to begin her career,Unexpectedly, Genevieve found herself pregnant at 23 with no significant partner by her side. She, along with her older sister and brother in law, kept this personal secret from the rest of the family, including her parents. At the time, Genevieve was a celebrity performer in the ice skating spectaculars of the 1940's and 50's. The story unfolds so nicely in Ed's book, but he's sure it wasn't as easy as that for Genevieve. As we were having our conversation, Ed mentioned that he's already started writing a sequel.I must make note that, Nina Di Gangi, Ed's adoptive mom, was very loving and caring and went to great lengths to follow through with Genevieve's wishes and desires for the best outcome for her son. And to this day, he still calls his adoptive mom, "mom." And it's astonishing, the similarities between the two mothers. The coincidences/similarities in their likes and characteristics is profound. It's truly a remarkable story, that I'm sure you'll enjoy. The Gift Best Given , a memoir, is now available online as well as on Ed's website. Edward Di Gangi: What family Means | That's the #truthEdward Di Gangi was adopted at birth in New York City. An only child, he made no effort to explore his heredity until, at age 69, a visit to a cemetery where members of his adoptive mother's family were buried stirred his interest. Over the past three years, through extensive archival research and DNA testing, Ed peeled back the layers of his once unknown family piecing together the life story of an extraordinary woman—his birth mother.Far from being the ordinary woman that Di Gangi had envisioned, Genevieve Knorowski was an aspiring “artista” who left home at the age of seventeen in the midst of World War II to join an ice-skating company in Vancouver. Journeying alone by train across the continent from New York, Genevieve would go on to achieve fame as an ice show performer, skating in the United States, Central and South America, and across Europe. However, it is a decision Genevieve makes on Easter Sunday in a church on New York City's Upper West Side that will forever connect the life of a young woman pursuing her dreams with the life of a seventy-year-old man searching for answers to the lifelong questions of who we are, where we come from, and what family means. EDWARD DI GANGI, an author from North Carolina and adopted at birth, will join us to discuss his discoveries as he traced his roots as he neared the age of seventy. As he discussed in his book, "A Gift Best Given: A Memoir", he learned that his biological mother had been a remarkable woman, and that she had given him the best gift of all. Today's focus will be on "Fathers Day". FROM HIS BIO: "Through three years of research, Di Gangi found that his mother had been a celebrity performer in the glamorous ice show spectaculars of the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to recounting his own story, the author details his mother's life and travels beginning with the time she left home in New York at the age of 17 to travel alone by train across the country to join a traveling ice skating troupe. Five years later and unexpectedly pregnant, she returned home, known only to her eldest sister and her sister's husband, to manage the birth and the adoption of her son. Di Gangi speaks with enthusiasm and clarity about family secrets, reunions with previously unknown family members, and discoveries as well as genealogy and research into family history." www.digangiauthor.com

It’s for the woman who feels unseen, unsure, overwhelmed, and alone in the desert and desperate for a way back to the Jordan River… so you can feel freedom, can be rinsed clean and can be full of hope". FROM HER BIO: "I started hearing “WRITE” as I began to work through difficult seasons in my life. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2005 and a Masters in the Arts of Teaching in 2011 both from McNeese State University. After my sister-in-law passed away in 2013 and after God help me overcome doubt in 2014, I began to write more and listen to God’s direction and calling. I wrote my family story of restoration and redemption and two Bible studies by the time I attended She Speaks Writer Conference in the summer of 2019. I realized then that God had called me into the ministry and I had a passion to help others study God’s Word, process their pain, and discover their purpose." https://www.andreapbourgeois.com Enjoy!

In “The Gift Best Given” Edward Di Gangi Pieces Together Family Secrets of an Unknown Mother In today's episode, we visit with Edward Di Gangi, author of The Gift Best Given, a moving and extraordinary memoir about the three-year genealogical search for his origins that began in a New Jersey cemetery, and the life of an extraordinary woman—his birth mother. Genevieve Knorowski left home at the age of seventeen in the midst of World War II to join an ice-skating troupe, and embarked on a five-year journey across the US as she rose to fame. And then life intervened and she had to make a decision on an Easter Sunday in New York City that will forever connect the story of a woman pursuing her dreams with the life of a man searching for answers. Edward Di Gangi's heart is in this story in more ways than one. His heart beat fast when he committed to the path to find answers to his past and when he made one discovery after another, his heart became more full for the love of a mother who had the courage and grace to give him life and lead him to relatives he never knew he had.
