After watching Rick's video of his plane flying, I was curious about how he used a 360 camera attached to the wing of the airplane to literally show different views, all from the same camera. Rick walks us through how he makes it all work. The complexity of being multiethnic is explored in this powerful conversation between host Maiysha Kai and theGrio's Natasha Alford. "American Negra" is part memoir, part cultural analysis, and all truth as Alford shares her experience navigating two worlds. Not just culturally but also economically. Alford talks life after Harvard and the immense pressure she felt post-graduation; she also gets vulnerable about her recent health struggles. This Grio crossover is full of Black girl magic. Few memoirs fully depict an entire family's experience when one member suffers from severe and chronic mental illness. Debut author Deborah Kasdan accomplishes just that in ROLL BACK THE WORLD: A Sister's Memoir. Threaded throughout this love letter to her older sister are stories of four siblings and their parents. Each one walks a tightrope between self-care and deep concern for Rachel, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of twenty-five. It takes thirty years and numerous admissions to five psychiatric hospitals before a compassionate social worker finally catches a glimpse of the poet inside her and discovers a way to assist her in living on her own. As the second sibling, the author, Deborah Kasdan, struggled for decades with painful emotions of grief, shame, and survivor's guilt before deciding to share her story, and her family's. Delving into her parents' lives, she traces the emotional impact of significant historical events such as World War II and the Cold War on Rachel's childhood. She illustrates how each family member responded to Rachel's psychiatric crisis and its devastating aftermath based on their own individual histories. Kasdan's memoir provides detailed accounts of how personal and legal battles with the mental health system exacerbated distress and conflict within the family, hindering their efforts to support Rachel. Given the magnitude of the current crisis—with government estimates stating that fourteen million adults had serious mental illness in 2021—it becomes evident how loving families can become a tragically wasted resource.

37 minute listenBorn and raised in Venezuela, Seemi Choudry is the daughter of Pakistani immigrants who moved with her family to Chicago at the turn of the century. We discuss the intersections of identity, religion, faith, and her work as a writer. "Basically to sum that up is like, how can you be both Latina and Muslim? You know, that doesn't exist. And the truth of the matter is that it does exist and, and it's very common. But it's not dominant culture, right? And so certainly there's so much to be said about the way that we consume dominant culture and ultimately how that even affects the way that we feel somewhat supported in being able to articulate all the identities that we possess."Seemi is currently doing an MFA and is writing the manuscript for her memoir. Charles Foster set out to answer one of the most perplexing questions of all - what sort of creatures are we humans? - in one of the most unique ways possible: immersing himself in experiences that evoke three central epochs in the development of consciousness - the upper Paleolithic, around 40k years ago, the neolithic, around 10k years ago when humans invented/stumbled upon and couldn't get out of agriculture, and the Enlightenment, which ushered in the scientific revolution in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.Interested in checking out Charles' new book Being a Human: Adventures in 40,000 years of Consciousness? This episode I spoke with Shelley Buck and Kathy Curtis, Co-authors of "Leave Your Light On".An incredible journey of love, courage and spirit is chronicled in “Leave Your Light On,” a new book by Shelley Buck about the life and death of her son Ryder, who co-authored the book posthumously through his writings.Ryder Buck is the son of Disney director Chris Buck (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and artist Shelley Buck. Ryder, a singer-songwriter, was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 at the age of 22. After undergoing surgery and extensive treatments he was cancer-free within eight months of his diagnosis. Six months after defeating cancer, at the age of 23, Ryder tragically died after getting hit by a car on a freeway after his car broke down.Chris Buck dedicated his 2014 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for “Frozen” to Ryder’s memory. Ryder was an inspiration for the song “The Next Right Thing” from “Frozen 2” and the film’s character, Ryder Nattura, was named after him. The Disney+ series “Into the Unknown: The Making of Frozen 2” features a segment about Ryder.“Shelley has done an extraordinary job capturing the impact Ryder had on us and the world during his short life,” said Chris Buck. “Ryder was the type of person who inspired others to be and do their best and he was such a gift to us in so many ways.”“Leave Your Light On” is the story of how Ryder adapted to life after learning he had cancer and how that inspired him and changed his relationship with his parents and the world around him. Told through first person accounts, recollections from friends and family and Ryder’s own words from his journals and social media posts, the book shows a parent-child relationship challenged by an unrelenting illness and a young man’s determination to live life on his own terms. The book was co-written with writer Kathy Curtis, with the title coming from a song written by Ryder about maintaining a positive attitude.“His legacy lives on through this story, which I hope will inspire many people who are faced with the difficulty of hearing and processing bad news,” said Shelley Buck. “We can’t always change what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond to it.”Ryder was a young man with an unstoppable dream to lift people up through his music. While cancer should have beaten him, Ryder rose above it all to live from a place of passion. In this uplifting and powerful story, readers will meet an unforgettable person determined to accept his own quirks and flaws with humor and see a parent-child relationship tested by an unrelenting disease followed by the grief of an entire family.Copy of book available on Amazon: https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asin=B087QQ32Y3&preview=newtab&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_KEdAFbP2W24FVOr by contacting press@honigllc.comTitle: Leave Your Light On: The Musical Mantra Left Behind by an Illuminating SpiritPublisher: Eagle’s Quest Publishinghttps://www.kathycurtisink.com/

MemoryBanc: Organizing Your Life with Kay Bransford " When my parents had trouble remembering how to manage the checkbook, or even where the checkbook was, I stepped in to assist them. They had Wills, a Trust and the Power of Attorney was done, but that doesn't really help you when you need to manage the day-to-day affairs. I also found several financial institutions that refused to acknowledge the Durable Power of Attorney because it was more than 2 and 5 years old. I needed to know their medical history so I could be their health care advocate; I had to manage their household and know what service plans they had in place–all the little things most of us keep in our heads. I created an organization system that held all of this information and that I could share with my siblings, so they could easily step in and take over for me when I was out of town." ~ Kay Bransford MemoryBanc® Monograph is designed to help adults record their life story and prompts the owner to record everything from the family tree to sibling(s), spouse(s), friends, schools, recipes, and firsts along with photo and memento pages resulting in a pictorial memoir of your life. is book "North of Hollywood" is an intimate, sometimes hilarious, sometimes touching and always honest account of making a living and living life next to Hollywood legends. The memoir is full of anecdotes such as tough guy Al Pacino giving Lenz a gift of sorts, funny lady Lucille Ball being less than humorous with him and telling about encounters with Peter Sellers, Bob Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald. My guest today is Rick Lenz, and actor who as appeared alongside such people as Goldie Hawn, Walter Matthau, Al Pacino, Maureen O'Hara, Jackie Gleason and Frank Sinatra.
