He did both Ancestry and 23andMe out of curiosity and was never searching for family. there was a match on 23andMe and life changed forever! Now, he describes himself as ADOPTED, husband, father, grandfather & athlete. At years 58 years old on July 3 2019, Michael found his birth mom and maternal half brother and sister. A Transgender Birthmom's Complex Journey with Jack MacCarthy Amidst the backdrop of their conservative upbringing, Jack's path of self-discovery and acceptance unfolds, revealing the profound impact of a chance encounter with a queer girl at a Catholic youth group retreat. From exploring gender through the lens of art to navigating the complexities of their identity within the adoption community, Jack's story is a testament to resilience and the power of embracing one's true self. What unique challenges await a trans and/or non-binary birth parent? How can we best support LGBTQ+ people within the adoption community in general? Stay tuned to discover the chapters of Jack's remarkable tale for the first time in an adoption-specific context on this episode of Unraveling Adoption podcast. “I think what is difficult about words, labels, boxes, is trying to find the balance between too open and too closed. So a word has to, almost by definition, exclude something in order to have any meaning. But you also don't want people who are feeling resonance with that word to be left out, even if they don't necessarily fit the "definition" of it perfectly. And definitions are a slippery concept anyway because words really just mean how people use them.” - Jack MacCarthy

Hi, My name is Yolanda and I'm from Australia. I was born with a beautiful flame-like birthmark on my face- mom told me that God took more time to create me because I was that special- but what confused me was that she always made me cover up my birthmark with make-up. It's just track practice, mom. Is this really necessary? "Yes honey, it's to protect you from people who stare too much."I went along with what mom said, and even though I aways covered up my birthmark- she made me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world. I loved her to bits, and we had a very strong bond but sometimes, seeing the kids in school with their fathers made me jealous and curious about mine. "Mom, why don't I have a Dad?""Uh, he left us years ago. ""Why?""It doesn't matter. You have me now." Mom avoided the topic of my father like the plague and one day I found out why in the form of A letter showing that I was adopted. "You weren't supposed to see that." Hosted on Acast. She's brought her heart, passion, and determination to tackle the tough stuff for this conversation and we're so thankful for it. Ashley is a birth mom, bio mom, wife, advocate, and so much more. Her story brings light to the parts of adoption that make us uncomfortable, and that's precisely why we invited her to be on the show. We are just switching our name from Safe Home Podcast to Unraveling Adoption, and this is the first full episode under our new name. In this week's episode, Beth Syverson chats with Leslie Pate Mackinnon, a licensed clinical social worker and an adoption activist for the past 30 years. Leslie is a seasoned and well-respected therapist in the adoption community. She is a nationally known trainer who travels across the country training therapists, agencies and child welfare workers about the psychological issues inherent in adoption and third-party reproduction. Following four decades of successful practice in Atlanta, Leslie and her husband relocated to Asheville, NC. Leslie comes to this work by way of being a birthmother in the 1960s, the Baby Scoop Era. She understands adoption trauma deeply, both as a lived experience and as a therapist for all members in the adoption constellation - adoptees, birthparents, and adoptive parents. On Safe Home Podcast, we've had 8 episodes so far with adoptees, and 1 episode with another adoptive parent, but this is our first episode from the birth mom's perspective, which is a super-critical piece of this puzzle. ===============

Gail L. Taylor-Tubbs, 71 years of age and Birth Mom to Andrew Joseph Berry Gail married Johnny Tubbs in 1993, with a blended family of six Children (first-born son, my second-born/deceased son, four step children, 17-Grand Children, 1-Great Grandson and Twins on the way in October 2022. In 1977, when Gail's deceased son Christopher was an infant, she discovered that Massage was good for infants and toddlers. This is also when she began the search for her first-born. Massage as a profession stayed on her mind from that time until she became a Certified Massage Therapist in 1997. Today, after having worked at Spas, Chiropractic offices and as an Instructor of Massage Therapy core curriculum, she is still working in the field of Massage Therapy with a steady clientele at her home studio. Gail as a 15-year old birth mother in 1967, she chose to relinquish him to adoption rather than have him grow up, in what she considered, a dysfunctional family. She prayed to God that someone would adopt him and give him everything he wanted and needed. When Gail found Drew Berry in 2003, she discovered that God had indeed answered her prayers. Drew had been adopted by a Public School Teacher and his wife, a Nurse who could not have children. He became their first child. Drew has a blended family of a wife, 6 children, 1 grandson and twin grandchildren on the way. He and his wife just finished building a house in an affluent area of Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas. Gail and Drew cherish each other as family and she loves him so much. They are in regular contact with each other. Ashley is not the stereotype like society may describe as a Birth Mom. She had her path laid before her to follow in the footsteps of her father. Ashley followed that path as a ‘ people pleaser ' as she described herself. Ashley received the accolades she always wanted as she felt ‘ starved for love' in her life. The sudden death of her father took her on a complete turn in her life as she went on “ The Road Less Traveled”.
Erin Quick is the CEO and Co-Founder of PairTree, a company that is modernizing the adoption process. Erin is a powerhouse - she's founded three successful startups, she's a Puget Sound Business Journal 40 under 40, she's a marketer and branding professional, and maybe most importantly, Erin is also a mother. When Erin's fertility path led to adoption, she, as a marketer and brander, began asking questions about the process and wondering why it had to be the way it was - expensive, discriminatory, and long. After deviating from the norm and adopting two kids with her own team, her circle started reaching out for help. That circle grew, and before she knew it, she realized her calling was to modernize adoption and figure out how to allow all families to grow without an agency if they so desired. All in Spring of 2020. While she was homeschooling a Kindergartner and Pre-schooler. It's not often that you get to speak to a visionary. This interview is one where I walked away knowing that I was speaking to someone who is going to change the world. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Trigger warnings - we talk about infertility, miscarriage and loss in this episode. We discuss adoption, placement and all the things that come with it. If you are considering adoption or placement please find PairTree here. PairTree on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pairtreefamily/ Please leave a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! We are wrapping up our four-part series for foster care month with this conversation from a birth mother. It is so important for us to include all members of the triad and we're so thankful that Whitney came on to share her story with us. Whitney's story is unique because she was adopted herself, so she has a lot of personal connections to this topic. When Whitney was 21-years-old, she became pregnant and placed her son for adoption. She wanted her son to have all of the things that she had and more, and facing the reality that she did not have the resources to provide that. We talk about how a lot of times people don't know what to say when it comes to adoption, and how important it is to acknowledge that all adoption stories involve loss. We even chat about how to be there for people who feel deep pain on Mother's Day. Our prayer is that this conversation can help us know better so that we do better.Connect with JamieFacebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

I have the honor to share this tender story from Suzanne Arrison! Suzanne described her younger years as a "lifetime of wondering." So, as a young woman, Suzanne set out on a journey to find her Birth Mom. She had no idea where this journey would take her, but she prayed often and swung the doors of her heart open to the possibilities of all that might be found in the unknown. I was so blessed by this conversation. I know you will be also. Join us!
When a reel on Instagram went viral of her children meeting their birth mom for the first time Rachel sits down with McKenzie to discuss how her family came to be. A story of love, faith, and family.
