Today’s interview is with Eleanor Henderson, author of Ten Thousand Saints and The Twelve-Mile Straight. I loved my talk with Eleanor, especially for the number of practical, useful ideas she gave me. In the podcast, you’ll hear me react live to an exercise she has her writing students run through that I had to work on staying present in the interview because I just wanted to think about how I could apply it to my book. Do you know that feeling? Where you hear something so good it steals your attention? There are tons of moments like this during the interview. Thank you again to Eleanor for her time and wisdom. And now, here is the interview with Eleanor Henderson.Support the show (http://www.howwriterswrite.com)
Edan and Amelia return to the complicated topic of school choice. At 35:00, they interview novelist Eleanor Henderson about the function and power of birth stories, what it's like raising a tween boy, and writing about illness. LINKS to what we mention Thanks for your support!

Eleanor Henderson’s bestselling debut novel Ten Thousand Saints was named one of the New York Times Book Review’s ten best books of the year and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, among other honors. It was deemed “fierce, devoted and elegiac,” and Ann Patchett said, “Eleanor Henderson is in possession of an enormous talent which she has matched up with skill, ambition, and a fierce imagination.” In her forthcoming novel, The Twelve-Mile Straight, Henderson boldly returns to the page with a story inspired by those she heard about the small town in South Georgia her father grew up in, and combines the emotional acuity of her earlier work with a fresh take on big, important themes. Henderson is joined by Edan Lepucki, author of the novels California and Woman No. 17.

Host Cyd Oppenheimer talks with author Eleanor Henderson about her novel Ten Thousand Saints ("I wanted to write a book not just about the coming of age of young people, but the coming of age of a city"); guest readers Sam Purdy and Shifra Sharlin join Oppenheimer to discuss brothers and mothers, guilt and love.
Today's show features conversations with multiple authors, all of whom have contributed to a new anthology entitled Labor Day: True Birth Stories by Today's Best Women Writers. Guests include the anthology's editors, Eleanor Henderson and Anna Solomon, as well as Amy Brill, Arielle Greenberg, Cristina Henriquez, Heidi Julavits, Jane Roper, Rachel Jamison Webster, Sarah Jefferis, and Sarah Strickley. Booklist says "This isn’t a how-to book, nor does it present a case for the ‘perfect birth,’ which sets it apart from the plethora of childbirth manuals and lends it broader appeal and a very different type of resonance." And Emma Straub says "Pregnancy made my body ravenous for food and my brain ravenous for stories like this, stories of how other women had crossed the great divide. In delivery rooms, in the backseats of cars, and at home, these women tell their birth stories so clearly that they must have had stenographers present on the scene. I loved reading this book with my baby asleep in the next room, and will give it to every pregnant woman I know from here on out, forever." Monologue topics: Labor Day, hard work, parenthood.
