In 2008, Mark Stefanowski sought a life change after a DUI charge on Christmas Day. He began watching VHS tapes of Bryan Kest's power yoga classes, which led him from a basement practice to the systematic and consistent practice of Bikram yoga. Eventually, he found his place—and later completed his training—at CorePower Yoga. Now a Harley-riding, charismatic, and thoughtful yoga instructor, Mark teaches online classes, in-person donation-based sessions at breweries, and maintains a regular schedule at CorePower Yoga in Colorado. In this episode, I chat to Fearne Cotton's fave yoga teacher, Donna Noble. Donna's been a yoga teacher since 2011 and without realising has pioneered inclusivity and accessibility in the yoga space. Donna shares her journey into yoga, initially inspired by a friend's observation of Madonna's physique (!) and how it evolved into a central part of her life, especially after her experience with Bell's Palsy. We chat about our shared beginnings in Bikram, the challenges of inclusivity, and why Yoga is fundamentally a social justice practice at its core. Key Takeaways:Wellness should be defined individually, not by the wellness industry.Yoga is more than just physical fitness; it's about the mind-body connection and community. There's a need for greater diversity and inclusion in yoga spaces.Teachers have the power to disrupt and change the yoga landscape.Addressing socioeconomic disparities is crucial for making yoga accessible to both practitioners and teachers.Episode Highlights:00:03:40 Donna's experience with Bell's Palsy and how it influenced her yoga journey.00:07:20 Redefining wellness 00:11:40 The importance of listening to your body 00:19:55 The power of teachers to create change in the yoga community.00:25:50 Social justice in yoga00:30:30 Addressing the affluence gap among yoga teachers.About the Guest:Donna Noble is a yoga teacher and advocate for diversity and inclusion in the yoga and wellness space. Welcome to another episode of Who Are These Guys – where we take on new experiences, push our limits, and then complain about it afterward like true New Yorkers. This time, we sweat out our egos (and probably a few bad life decisions) in the sweltering inferno that is hot yoga.Jesse & Kurt sit down with Nicole & Chris from Just Breathe Yoga Studio in Massapequa and Sayville, NY. The Who Are These Guys crew threw themselves into a scorching 90-minute session that had us questioning our life choices, our flexibility, and whether we'd make it out alive. What started as a casual fitness experiment quickly became an existential crisis—because nothing says "I need to reevaluate my life" quite like trying to touch your toes in a 105-degree room.We break down:✔️ The brutal reality of Inferno Hot Pilates vs. traditional yoga✔️ Why breathing (correctly) is the difference between passing out and making it through✔️ How COVID changed the yoga world and led to some underground, back-alley yoga sessions (yes, really)✔️ Bikram's wild history and how the practice survived despite its controversial founder✔️ How martial arts, breathwork, and yoga intersect in the pursuit of mental and physical mastery✔️ And of course, why King Pigeon might be the best boxing nickname of all timeIf you've ever wondered if hot yoga is a life-changing practice or just a slow-cooked torture method, this episode is for you. Buckle up, hydrate, and let's get into it.

More often than not on this podcast, we have the privilege of listening to and learning from health, wellness, biohacking, longevity experts talk about the latest research, health hacks, books, projects, conferences, stories/anecdotes, clinical experience, etc. And there is so much to glean from those episodes and practical applications for your own wellness regimens. Today's episode with former NFL player, Landon Cohen, provides a very well-rounded conversation on health and wellness from a very unique perspective and from someone that was literally in the trenches as a pro football player. While Landon is a wildly successful entrepreneur today, which is a grind in its own right, his days as an NFL defensive lineman (and, of course, the years and year of collegiate and high school football) took a major toll on his body and, even more so, his mind and brain. This is secondary to the perpetual banging of pads and helmets every single play between the offensive and defensive lineman. Being drafted in 2008, Landon played in an era where the repercussions of concussions was not yet on the radar in football. Fast forward to early last year, Landon was recommended by a friend to try some BioBlue and red light therapy to see if it would help with his post-NFL body and mind. According to Landon, BioBlue played a major role in regaining his sharp mind and cognition/focus, while the red light therapy (combined with the BioBlue) helped reduce so lingering aches and pains. Needless to say, he is a massive advocate of both modalities. Along with discussing his experience with MB and RLT, Landon talks about the differences between his health and wellness mindset as an NFL player vs. his mindset in his post-NFL life, his desire and motivation to live a "clean lifestyle", how/why he wakes up around 3 every morning to start his day, his viewpoints on diet/food and some other fun topics, such as crypto, blockchain, AI and much, much more!If you found the information in today's episode with Landon Cohen particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. “There's never a perfect time. Just begin.” In this episode of The RebelRebel Podcast, host Michael Dargie welcomes Steven Foster, the founder of One Golden Nugget, to share his remarkable journey through entrepreneurship, personal struggle, and self-discovery. From sleeping in his office during lockdown to creating a global platform that collects and shares wisdom nuggets, Steven's story is as inspiring as it is humbling. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. Steven takes listeners back to his early days when his entrepreneurial spirit first sparked. He started by replicating cassette tapes for dance music enthusiasts in the UK, which quickly scaled into a million-dollar business. His journey then veered into the world of music promotion and large-scale dance events, before crashing into bankruptcy. From there, Steven reinvented himself as a songwriter, securing deals with Universal Music and collaborating with major artists. Yet, the rollercoaster continued—his ventures in digital marketing agencies followed a similar pattern of rapid growth and collapse. At his lowest point—broke and living in his office during the pandemic—Steven had an idea: to collect and share people's most valuable pieces of wisdom. Thus, One Golden Nugget was born. What started as a personal project turned into a life-changing platform, transforming both Steven's life and the lives of those who shared their insights. Throughout the conversation, Steven emphasizes the power of kindness, slowing down, and trusting the journey. He stresses the importance of niching down, taking massive action, and embracing failure as part of the entrepreneurial adventure. He shares his belief that true happiness is rooted in kindness, and that the greatest gift is simply waking up each day. Whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur or a “rebel in waiting,” Steven's story will leave you with a renewed sense of purpose and a pocket full of golden nuggets. Cool Things Steven Says “Kindness is the route to happiness.” “Don't boil the ocean. Find your niche and own it.” “There's never a perfect time. Just begin.” “You have nothing to lose.” “Be the love—in everything you do.” Episode Highlights Steven's early days: cassette tape duplication turned million-dollar business. The rise and fall of Dreamscape, his large-scale dance music events company. His time as a cleaner, learning humility after losing everything. Transition into songwriting, working with Pop Idol and X Factor contestants. The birth of One Golden Nugget during the COVID-19 lockdown. The power of kindness and faith as drivers for success. “Don't rush; there's no destination.” Why niching down is key to sustainable business. Bikram hot yoga as a life-changing practice. The importance of clean eating for sustained energy. The gift of simply waking up each day. In the early 2000s, Bikram Yoga spread across North America like wildfire. It was a multi-billion dollar business, spurred on by its eccentric founder, Bikram Choudhury. Choudhury was as close to yoga royalty as you could get and was unafraid to hide it. But according to some of his own students, his empire was built upon blood, sweat and tears – as well as a few critical lies.Reporter Julia Lowrie Henderson practiced Bikram Yoga for nearly a decade and joins Crime Story to discuss the scandal that rocked her yoga community.Note: This episode contains difficult subject matter, including references to sexual assault. Crime Story is taking a quick summer break. We're back in September with all new episodes.
Welcome to Teachers Talk, a series on Scrolling 2 Death featuring candid discussions with teachers. Parents are going to get the real deal on what's happening with screens at school, how tech is affecting students' learning and teachers' jobs. Today's episode features former middle and high school French teacher, Kathleen Barlow. Kathleen discusses the challenges of screens in schools and the impact on students' learning and behavior. She shares her experiences as a teacher and highlights the issues of smartphone and school-issued device use in the classroom. Kathleen emphasizes the importance of foundational knowledge and critical thinking, which she believes are hindered by excessive screen time. She suggests implementing policies such as a bell-to-bell phone ban and using phone lockers to address these challenges. Kathleen also shares her experience pulling back from screens within her own family, including switching her twin 17-year-olds from smartphones to the Pinwheel phone, stating "I could not keep supplying this drug to my children." Don't miss the literal earthquake that interrupted our discussion 12.5 minutes in! This episode is sponsored by Bark Technologies. Learn about the Bark App for iPhones and Androids. *Use code SCROLLING2DEATH FOR 10% OFF Check out the Bark Phone. About Kathleen Barlow: Kathleen Barlow is a mother of 6 kids and grandmother of 3. She is a former middle school and high school French teacher, and she taught for about a decade in New Hampshire and Utah. During the 2023-2024 school year, Kathleen was teaching at a middle school in Utah and was struggling to motivate and connect with her students. In continuing to observe the negative impact of phones in school firsthand, she eventually felt compelled to leave her teaching career, in the hopes of finding a way to help schools develop better cell phone policies. Kathleen has since become a member of the Smartphone Free Childhood movement that began in the UK. She has also aligned herself with several other amazing organizations that all have the common goal of helping kids and families become more intentional about their screen time, as well as their time spent in real life connection. Kathleen is in the process of developing her own organization, SOS (Screens Out of Schools), that will be offering services to help in this endeavor. She believes that in order to back up this “digital boat,” we need to be focused “upstream.” Many have found themselves in an exhaustive loop of trying to put out the fires that inevitably arise from being immersed in a dangerous virtual world. By greatly reducing screen time, especially during the school day, many of the problems that are currently plaguing our kids will also be reduced and even eliminated. In her spare time, Kathleen is crazy about mountain biking with her family, and also loves hiking, Bikram yoga, journaling, and reading. She was thrilled to recently finish her second sprint triathlon. Kathleen tries daily (yet sometimes fails!) at practicing the art of being present in each moment. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scrolling2death/support

She had been outsourcing control and knowledge of her body to the "experts" ever since she was a child. And even in becoming a "body expert" herself, she still was experiencing an internal disconnection from her body that became amplified during the birth of her daughter and her postpartum experience. She felt deeply that something needed to change. She needed a sense of belonging and ownership within her own physical experience of life. Somatics, and specifically Hanna Somatics, has been a powerful doorway to regaining and actually creating an embodied sense of self and personal authority within her! Today, I have with me Zoe Hewett, a yoga teacher, exercise physiologist, and mother of two who recently graduated from the Radiance program. She's here to take us through how Hanna Somatics has impacted her life, career, and experience of motherhood. In this episode, Zoe takes us through: - Her traumatic birth experience and how she felt disconnected from her body and power. - Her somatic exploration journey and how she found it profound and empowering. - Her journey through the Radiance program and what she learnt, including honoring her own knowing, asking for what she needs, and setting boundaries. - How the subtle, slow, Hanna Somatics movements allow the nervous system to release chronic tension patterns layer by layer. - How she incorporates somatic principles when working with clients healing from injuries. - How both effort and rest are beneficial, and finding the balance is crucial for preventing burnout and injury. - How healing happens in a non-linear, quantum way as we renegotiate the past and build new capacities in the present moment. And so much more! Zoe Hewett is an exercise physiologist, Bikram yoga teacher, and mother. As a former elite athlete, via the PhD experience, and by observing her daughters' early years, movement, and the study of movement's effects on the human experience, has been her language for most of her life. In recent years she discovered somatic movement, which then distilled into a focused dive into Hanna Somatics, which presented a whole new - yet old! - way of treating stress and chronic pain. Living with the benefits of her own evolving somatic movement practice, Zoe can't help but share somatic principles with clients in both her exercise physiology and yoga work. She is excited to see where her life work takes her as she continues to work with people from a whole person, somatically aware perspective to facilitate each individual's self-healing journey. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aimee322/support

The Jewel in Mumbai by Bikram Dandiya "The Global Vipassana Pagoda in Mumbai was built to mark the birth centenary year of Sayagyi U Ba Khin, the Burmese Dhamma teacher of Shri Satya Narayan Goenkaji. The monument is built in the Myanmar style of the Shwedagon pagoda, as a token of gratitude to that country where the essence of the Buddha's teachings was maintained in its pristine purity, and from where it is now spreading throughout India, and via India to the rest of the world. Our Dhamma teacher Shri S.N. Goenkaji became the vehicle to make this happen. He was also our inspiring guide for every important aspect of this building project. Tremendous volition and effort went into the building of this staggering monument and it is interesting and educative to explore the journey. "Mr. Bikram Dandiya has beautifully chronicled some of these experiences in his booklet, “The Jewel in Mumbai”, the story of the making of the crystal bud atop the Global Vipassana Pagoda. Although his story concentrates on a specific part of this enormous structure, it typifies the challenges and solutions witnessed by those of us closely involved in its creation. For example, experts had opined that it was not possible to construct a 325 foot wide stone dome without supporting pillars; the dome went up thanks to indigenous technology, using thousands of huge interlocking stones weighing 700 to 800 kg each, and now seemingly floating in the air!" —M.M. You've probably wondered about yoga for athletes. Is it good? Bad? Does it depend? Like many things, it does depend. You'll want to consider why you're adding yoga into your training program instead of assuming that yoga is a catch-all and will benefit everyone. In this episode, Brett and Mike discuss the topic of yoga for athletes in detail. For some athletes, yoga is wonderful! If you are training a lot and you want something to help take you down a notch, remove yourself from the wired state, down regulate your nervous system, help you focus on your breath, etc. yoga may complement your training quite well. For others, it's a bad idea. If you take someone who is hypermobile and get them really great at yoga, they may not have control over their range of motion and it could potentially event make them slower and inhibit force production. If you're curious about the pros and cons of yoga for athletes, tune in and get ready to learn. Please note: at the end of the episode Brett mentions Bikram yoga when he meant to say Iyengar. We have a special guest this week! Persia Juliet joins Michael to share her knowledge on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the connection to the elements that make up our composition. Persia begins by sharing her back story, including her introduction to yoga and first teaching experience as a Bikram yoga teacher. Persia now lives in Bali where she teaches yin yoga and offers training in Yin Yoga and traditional Chinese medicine. Persia talks about her first exposure to Chinese medicine and how this genuine passion led her to study further, diving into the philosophy and the anatomy of the Chinese meridians. Persia shares about the 5 elements and relates them to the seasons in traditional Chinese medicine, as opposed to the 4 seasons as we know them in the West. They talk about the water, wood, fire, earth and metal elements, the qualities of these 5 seasons, and how they relate to Yin and Yang energy, and the meridian lines (in TCM known as: energy lines). They connect the (energy) elements to the seasons and discuss how to find your own element. Listen to this full episode to learn more about your element, the seasons that are connected, as well as the energy lines and organs that are associated with each element. While Jason was off galavanting in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest Joshua spent some time with the inimitable Bikram Singh, owner of Norfolk Wine & Spirits in Norfolk Massachusetts which is, perhaps, the largest single store outlet in the US focusing independently bottled spirits. Bikram and Joshua discuss both Indy bottlings as well as what the various futures of DTC (direct to consumer shipping) could look like for retail shop owners. We also get to hear Birkam's whisky origin story which is really quite fun! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song - Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo - RØDE for making *really* great microphones - Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers - Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices - Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
Jessamyn Stanley is an award-winning yoga instructor, internationally acclaimed voice in wellness, and so much more. While Stanley was working to get her MA in performing arts management, a friend introduced her to Bikram yoga. As she began to share her practice on social media, her growing followership encouraged her to enroll in a yoga teacher training course, and the rest is history. Today, Stanley is a regular contributor to Self magazine, has written two yoga books, and has built her own inclusive wellness app, The Underbelly. In this episode, Stanley speaks about the systemic inequity Black women face, especially within the wellness industry, as well as why she believes in the benefits of naked yoga. Tune in to this week's episode to hear how her pivots, including attending culinary school, helped Stanley find her path.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
