I am in love with Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) and I want shout all about it throughout the late Summer, early Autumn season. They are big, beautiful, and bountiful with their tennis ball sized fruit with bright green husks and nuts snug deep inside. Slowly colonizing the sunlit fields and edges, home to all sorts of creatures both large and small, these towering monuments tell of the abundance of the land. They are amazing allies in healing, mentors in boundaries, relative buffet in mast years, and year round marker of beauty. Who doesn't want to sing their praises! For this show I really tried to dig into some ecological functions, and really just lean into why I love them so much.Maybe by the end of the show, you'll love them a little more too?To learn more : Ep. 167 : Black WalnutEp. 228 : Walnut Husk Maggot FlyTrees of the Carolinian Forest by Gerry Waldron. And welcome back to the program. Somebody on the text line said, Charlie, you forgot about Cracker Barrel. Oh, yes. Now here's the thing. We're in Westerly, Rhode Island, right up there near Taylor Swift's $15,000,000 mansion over in the neighborhood of Watch Hill. They've only got one cracker barrel in the entire state of Rhode Island. That's in Coventry, Rhode Island. We are down Southwest Of Coventry, miles and miles and miles away. Gotta take I 95 from Westerly, up to Covington. They're talking about it there. They're talking about this unbelievable debacle of Cracker Barrel, and I don't owe and I'll tell you this little more about the story coming up. But they're trying to say now they're trying to say now that they've still got the barrel. The barrel is still there. They haven't gotten rid of the the barrel, the Cracker Barrel. It's just been turned on its side. Yeah. The barrel is just over on its side. That's all. That's all. It's still there. Still got a barrel. Everything's gonna be great. Everything's gonna be wonderful. That's all it is. Just turn the bell over on its side. That's all we do. That's all we do. Nothing more than that. It's great. Everything's gonna be wonderful. They they I alright. I'll tell you this story real quick. Got home last night, took the dogs for a walk, met up with our neighbors that we always see, walking their dogs, and we had it. We always have great conversation. And they went to Cracker Barrel this weekend because they wanted to see what was going on, And they talked to the waitress. They said, hey. Got some changes happening. And the way you know what the waitress did? She said, oh, let me go get the manager. They had this thing planned out. They had it planned out. So the waitress goes and gets the manager, and the manager comes out there, and he's got his talking points. He is like, oh, all we're doing is there's no no that Cracker Barrel that you saw, online, that was that was just it just looked like that because they were painting it. That's all. No. No. No. And this and, again, we're just keeping the the barrel. We just turned it over on its side, and there's listen. People aren't buying that crap. People aren't buying it. Literally, they're not buying it. John Rich post a picture, this weekend of a Cracker Barrel. I believe it was in Tennessee. Now if you don't think Cracker Barrel should be a very popular place in any of the states, Tennessee might be way up there at the top. The parking lot was practically empty on a Saturday afternoon. Practically empty. This is what happens when you go and you join the Woke Brigade. I don't know who this female CEO is, but when she gets up there and she's talking about, oh, well, it's all positive, and, oh, the reviews are all positive, and everybody's excited. She's lying through her big old giant nose. Absolutely. People are hating oh, wait a minute. Oh, hold on. Maybe the marketing team does love it. Maybe the marketing team thinks it's great. Maybe the people that are in charge of branding or advertising, maybe they like it because they got paid a lot of money to do it. But who they did not ask about it was the customers. They forgot about the people. And I was thinking about this this weekend. When you go to I mean, let's alright. Let's all be honest. The food is good, but it ain't great. Alright? It's good, but it's not great. You could go to Lizard's Thicket, oh, down there in Columbia, and get better country style food than Cracker Barrel. I mean, I I'll be honest with you. I don't know of a whole lot of places around here. Maybe there are a bunch of places around here that you could go get actually better food. People go to Cracker Barrel for the experience of going to Cracker Barrel. They love seeing all the things on the wall. They love to see the things hanging from the ceiling. They love the that homey country feel because it's like you're walking back into an old general store. That gave people something ...
A lovely week where we have both seen the same films, and in what is becoming quite irritating we agree on pretty much everythingUp first is romcom/thriller for the online dating generation 'F**k, Marry, Kill' available on Prime Video, also on that platform is the star studded political/action thriller 'Tin Soldier'. We are always lovers of a good Western so we turn to Sky Cinema for 'The Thicket' starring Peter Dinklage, Juliette Lewis and remarkably Metallica's own James Hetfield. We finish with one that we had nothing but fear for, the return of Police Squad in The Naked Gun, with Liam Neeson showing off his comedy chops. Hosted on Acast. I have been excited about Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) for a while. Theirs was one of the first complex songs I learned to identify, and being such a common neighbour on the landscape it's hard to go a few days without hearing them, even in Winter, but especially in the Spring. While out today, I came across a couple Song Sparrow tracks in the silt newly laid down by the receding Eramosa River flood waters and it pricked my interest to dig in a little deeper to this common figure in my life. In this brisk, hardened episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we mosey on down into the 2024 Tubi Original film, The Thicket, directed by Elliott Lester and starring Peter Dinklage. When one examines the state of cinema in modern times, they cannot avoid the inevitability of Tubi. How come? Tubi is where passion projects go to be their unapologetic selves, and this film is no exception. But will that passion rub off on us?

The new movie Longlegs is a psychological horror film that follows FBI Agent Lee Harker as she investigates a series of mysterious murder-suicides. The victims, all families, leave behind cryptic messages signed "Longlegs." As Harker delves deeper into the case, she uncovers a dark connection to the occult and must confront a terrifying supernatural entity. For cinematographer Andrés Arochi, technical mastery is key, but it's always in service to the story. “It has to come from something inside you that says, 'I want to create this' and then you find a technical way to do it,” he says. “For me it's always trying to be true to that instinct and to whatever feels right, and when you do it, then you're talking about yourself so it's easy to see yourself reflected.” Longlegs is Andrés' first international feature. For the past 12 years, Andrés has been working as a DP in Mexico. With no formal training, he began taking photos of friends in the music scene at age 17. Soon, he began creating projection video displays for concerts and shooting music videos and commercials. This led to work on huge music video and film sets as an on-set photographer, where he met Mexican cinematographers Guillermo Garza (the cinematographer of The Thicket), Alexis Zabé and Galo Olivares. Standing next to these skilled DPs with his camera in hand allowed Andrés to learn alongside them, and he would watch and ask questions, often copying their settings on his camera to experiment. In his spare time, Andrés would go out and practice the new techniques he learned, shooting low-budget films and music videos for friends. Fellow Mexican cinematographer Galo Olivares shot director Osgood Perkins' Gretel and Hansel, and he introduced Andrés to Perkins when the director was looking for a DP for Longlegs. Andrés was drawn to the humor in the Longlegs script, and loved that some comedy existed, even within a horror film. Unlike a lot of cinematographers and directors, Andrés and Perkins didn't create a lookbook or speak in depth about filmic references, such as Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, which were influences for Longlegs. Instead, Andrés says, “When we did talk about movies, it was more movies that had nothing to do with the genre. We talked a lot about My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy—a lot of Gus Van Sant 1990s indie America filmmaking. Elephant was an influence on the way we used Steadicam.” One artistic reference Andrés used was The Son of Man by artist René Magritte, a painting showing a man with his face hidden by an apple. Andrés loved the idea of keeping the face of Longlegs the killer hidden at first. Andrés chose to shoot on 35mm film and in a 4:3 aspect ratio for parts of Longlegs that take place in the 1970's. “Using film changes the emotion. Everyone stays focused and shooting on film makes it necessary for everyone to rehearse. So, I decided to shoot 35mm for everything in the 1970s and go with a 4:3 aspect ratio, then we did 2.39 and shot on digital with the Alexa Mini LF for the 1990s.” During the Longlegs shoot, director Osgood Perkins wanted the film crew to use their creativity. “Oz was always encouraging the whole team, like do what you feel, you understand the movie we're doing, just do the best version of you,” says Andrés. “So I was very, very inspired, and that created the space for us to create from our hearts using the best tools we had.” Find Andrés Arochi:http://www.andresarochi.com/selected Instagram: @andresarochi Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: https://hotrodcameras.com/ Sponsored by Aputure: https://www.aputure.com/ The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

The Thicket is a gritty Western thriller that follows a young man's quest to rescue his kidnapped sister from the clutches of the notorious Cut Throat Bill (Juliette Lewis). With a ragtag group of outcasts and the aid of the skilled bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage), he embarks on a perilous journey through the unforgiving Texas wilderness. Inspired by classic Westerns like The Searchers, The Revenant, and McCabe & Mrs. Miller, director Elliott Lester sought to create a visually striking and emotionally resonant film. “I look more at photography and art to inform the feeling, because the moment you shoot that very first frame, you're dictating how that movie's going to be,” says Elliott. “Where you put the camera, it informs how the performance is going to feel. There was always something intriguing to look at in each frame of the movie.” The Thicket was backed by the streaming service Tubi and filmed in Alberta, Canada, during the harsh winter months. The cast and crew faced extreme conditions, including temperatures well below freezing. Despite the challenges, Elliott and his team managed to capture the rugged beauty of the wilderness and create a sense of authenticity. Cinematographer Guillermo Garza played a crucial role in bringing Elliott's vision to life. Their collaboration was marked by a deep understanding of naturalism and a commitment to creating visually stunning shots. "One of the reasons I collaborated with him was because he had an amazing understanding of naturalism," Elliott says. "He's a pretty remarkable DP." With no formal film school training, Elliott worked his way up through the ranks of music video production back in its heyday. His experience as a first assistant director on films like American History X provided him with valuable experience and the desire to become a director. "I was obsessive about directing," he admits. "Once I got my teeth into something, I was like a dog with a bone." The Charismatic Voice's Elizabeth Zharoff is our special guest for this week's edition of the MetalSucks Podcast! Here to promote her Kickstarter campaign for the first ever harsh vocal research study featuring some of our genres biggest names. Elizabeth tells us about the journey that started with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore two years ago. She also outlines some of the real stage consideration that will be taken into account, if there is a possibility to find some real damage on any of the participants, which vocal cords are the easiest to damage for a vocalist, and how this science will help doctors with vocal therapy in many cases. We also discuss her opinion on vocalists that use backing tracks in music and if she'll declare a favorite band from all the artists the participate in the research. Petar and Jozalyn discuss the whirlwind announcement of Linkin Park reuniting, how the single and new vocalist where initially received, followed by a questionable decision made to support a convicted predator, if this will derail the momentum of Linkin Park reuniting. Additionally, we celebrate James Hetfield working in a film version of the excellent Joe R. Lansdale novel The Thicket, and Nita Strauss crossing nine years of sobriety. "It's like being a boxer when you get in with the actor. You have to have respect," says Lester. "Now, if you get in the ring with Arnold Schwarzenegger and you're like, oh, you're Arnold Schwarzenegger. Well, that's never going to work, is it? If you get in the ring and you're like, you're Arnold Schwarzenegger, I'm going to make you the best possible actor you can be and do the best possible performance. Then you have respect, you know, which is the most important thing between the actor and the director." Elliott Lester is a director and producer with a career spanning over two decades. He is best known for directing the thriller BLITZ, the critically acclaimed HBO film NIGHTINGALE, starring David Oyelowo, and the film Aftermath, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. His next project, THE THICKET starring Peter Dinklage, follows "a boy who, after his sister is kidnapped by a violent killer known only as Cut Throat Bill, enlists a fierce bounty hunter named Reginald Jones who becomes the leader of the group of outcasts searching for the stolen girl." In this interview, we talk about his early career and transition from music videos to feature films, his experiences working with various actors including A-list stars, how to build relationships with actors, and more.
