It's time to get back to basics, back to foundations, back to…dare we say…the elements? The Pixar Pals are following the fiery young Lumen family to Element City as they build a new home, business, and life in a completely unfamiliar land that's less than friendly to fire types. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing ELEMENTAL (2023), which we caught on Disney+.  Written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh; the film is directed by Peter Sohn.  The film follows Ember (Leah Lewis) a resident of Element City where fire/water/earth and air live together.  Her parents came from abroad for a better life for themselves and their baby to be (Ember).  She grows up healthy and happy and as she reaches maturity is on the path to inherit her father's business, a busy little general store that services the neighborhood.  We come to know that Ember has a short fuse but as the story progresses we find out exactly why that is.  When Wade (Mamoudou Athie) comes into her life, Ember realizes she has to be more authentic and true to herself in order to live her best life.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 41 m and is rated PG.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.  Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

This week on Script Apart, the writers behind Pixar's latest heartwarming spectacle take us down to Element City where the tree people are green and the Vivisteria Flowers are pretty. Yes, today we're joined by Kat Likkel and John Hoberg, the husband-and-wife duo whose script for Elemental – co-written with Brenda Hsueh and director Pete Sohn – has been enchanting audiences all summer. The film a hugely affecting tale whose premise, on first glance, looked to have a certain shared DNA with past Pixar hits. One popular internet theory suggests that the studio's best-known films all ask variations of the same question: “What if X abstract concept – toys, cars, monsters, rats – had feelings?” Elemental, though, is more than a movie about elements with emotions. It's a family drama about parental expectation. It's an immigrant tale, about the struggle to assimilate into a new society while keeping your own culture alive. It's a romantic comedy – When Harry Met Sally with fire and water. And it's also a disaster movie that takes side-swipes at how structural racism leads to minority communities being put in harm's way.In this week's episode, Kat and John join us to discuss an early draft of the movie, in which Elemental was shaping up to be Pixar's answer to Chinatown. The finished film follows fire element Ember as she fights to save her father's shop from closure, with the help of Wade, a water element working as a city inspector. Along the way, they uncover a leak in the city's canals emanating from a problem with a nearby dam, neglected by authorities. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, however, John and Kat explain how Wade's mother was initially intended to be the film's shock antagonist, orchestrating an evil cover-up. We talk about how Ember was originally written with much more of a Disney princess vibe before being retooled as an older, more streetwise character. And we uncover the meaning and power of “the bow” – a motif in the movie that ends up becoming one of Elemental's final, most emotionally devastating shots. Get fired up – this is a fun and fascinating deep dive into one of the year's best animations.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. ELEMENTAL is an animated fantasy from Pixar and Disney. The story takes place in Element City where water, fire, land, and air people live together, but not always peacefully. Ember, an adult female fire creature, is set to take over her father's business when he retires. However, he keeps postponing his retirement because she can't control her temper. One day, her temper causes a young water person and city inspector to report her to his boss. She convinces him, however, to help her keep the store open. This leads to unexpected consequences, not the least of which is that Wade and Ember are falling in love.

In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast we drop a bonus episode to feature the animation team behind the upcoming film Elemental from Disney and Pixar Studios. Featured in the interviews are director Peter Sohn, producer Denise Ream as well as directing animators Gwendolyn Enderoğlu and Allison Rutland. Director Peter Sohn joined Pixar Animation Studios in September 2000 and has worked on Academy Award®-winning feature films including Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and “WALL•E.” Sohn made his directorial debut on the Pixar short "Partly Cloudy", before going on to direct his first feature The Good Dinosaur. He was also an executive producer on Luca, which debuted on Disney+ in June 2021. Denise Ream joined Pixar Animation Studios in October 2006 as the associate producer on the Academy Award®-winning feature film Up. Ream continued on to produce 2011's Cars 2, working alongside director John Lasseter, and Pixar's original November 2015 feature film, The Good Dinosaur, with director Peter Sohn. Currently, Ream is serving as the producer on Disney and Pixar's upcoming feature Elemental, again alongside Director Peter Sohn. Gwendolyn  Enderoğlu joined Pixar Animation Studios in July 2013. She has worked as an animator and character development artist on Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, Coco, Onward and Luca. As a directing animator, Enderoğlu helps oversee the animation team. Along with the two other directing animators, Enderoğlu's role was to test and help develop the show's unique character rigs and animation style, as well as give notes, feedback and advice to the animators to help them execute the director's vision and elevate each shot in the film. Allison Rutland joined Pixar Animation Studios in April 2009. She worked as an animator on several Academy Award-winning feature films including Toy Story 3, Brave, Inside Out, and Coco. Rutland also served as the Directing Animator on Onward. Pixar's Elemental is a story about finding your way in the tribal Element City and through an unlikely pair reminds us how much more we have in common with each other than we may realize. In this live taping at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of Hollywood and movie theater owners, Elemental's Director Peter Sohn joins guests Dan McGrath of Cineplex and Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore to ponder with Wim and Jim the upcoming slate of films, technological advances and the state of the industry for the year ahead. You'll be surprised to know what they have in common, and perhaps not surprised that one shared passion worldwide is going to the movies.
