This week's Shabbat Message reflects on the overwhelming challenges faced in the present moment, comparing current crises—such as ongoing fires, a fragile ceasefire in Israel, and political shifts—to past periods of struggle, particularly the aftermath of the destruction of the Second Temple. In this time of uncertainty, we must stay connected, acknowledge the heaviness of the moment, and support one another through the shared burden, with the understanding that no one can face it alone. Each week, a member of the clergy offers their personal perspective on a topic of their choice, such as the week's Torah portion, a Jewish holiday, ritual, custom, or history. “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”-Sir Isaac NewtonBaked into the basic laws of physics, there is a fundamental truth that is being felt across the country, as we prepare to enter Shabbat this week. There exists a natural tendency to resist change in one's state of motion. That resistance is called inertia.Long before Sir Isaac Newton gave language to this tendency, inertia was illustrated in two journeys that began to take shape in this week's Torah portion. Each week, a member of the clergy offers their personal perspective on a topic of their choice, such as the week's Torah portion, a Jewish holiday, ritual, custom, or history.

It was when my daughter, now thirteen, was part of the infant and toddler program in her Early Childhood Center that I gained a new appreciation for the ‘fight or flight' response of human behavior. It is a term that I had always heard but never truly understood. That is, until I was there myself and had an opportunity to watch these new crawlers learn to navigate their way with through their shared space. We're back with a favorite of Amanda's: Alice Wu's coming-of-age movie, The Half of It. It centers on Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), a quiet Chinese-American girl in a small town just trying to get through high school when Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer), the local and ultimate himbo, enlists her to write love letters to Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire), who is so stunning she just happens to be the object of literally everyone's desires in this high school. Send us a Text Message.Hey romance friends! Let's celebrate Pride Month with a trio of smart, funny, quirky movies about queer girl crushes on high school classmates. Classmates to lovers is one of the most popular romantic tropes ever, and these movies have quite the unique take on those beats. The friendships are deep and full of love, the romantic explorations are hot, sexy, and heartfelt and the kisses are swoon-worthy. High school can be an exciting, and scary time for figuring out your desires and identity, but these young women navigate it all like the survivors they are.CW: lots of swearing, explicit talk of anatomy, sex and religionhttps://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comThe intention of Pride Month is "to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.”Looking at this trailer I laughed hysterically all over again. Bottoms is wild, horny and unhinged, but somehow it manages to become a cohesively hilarious and heartfelt queer coming-of-age romp. It's not for everyone but IYKYK.A fascinating deeper look at the cultural themes and motifs in the original Fight Club movie from 1999.There's so much more to high school life than being Booksmart — it took me a long time to learn that, too. I need to tuck this trailer away in my pocket and pull it out when I need to be cheered up. The slow mo power walk of these besties in their party era is total hysteria."Love is the trying and reaching and failing." The Half of It would not be half the movie it is without Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu. Support the Show.If you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! We review Elemental (2023) starring Leah Lewis!
We are stretching into our month of movie Growing Pains and our next selection is The Half of It. It stars Ellie Chu, played by Leah Lewis, a smart, quiet, immigrant, high school student that is struggling to keep her family afloat. Out of desperation she accepts money from Paul Munsky, played by Daniel Diemer in exchange for writing a love letter to his crush Aster Flores, played by Alexxis Lemire. This gives them both much more than they bargained for. In this episode: we find the most ODK phrase ever uttered in a movie, discuss ghost hunting with cat toys and contemplate why you'd choose Diego Rivera over Frida Khalo as your handle. This movie is a literal sausage fest (the tasty kind you eat) and we are here for it, we hope you are too and join us as we explore The Half of It.

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees things get elemental as Chris Hewitt has an engrossing chat with the stars of the new Pixar movie, Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie. Then things get a little sillier as he sits down with Hayley Atwell, who is a welcome addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise in Dead Reckoning Part One, which opens here on Monday. It's a spoiler-free interview, in which they talk about how Atwell got to grips with her character Grace, about her memories of shooting the first Captain America movie, and about her social media plans, but you might want to wait until you've seen Dead Reckoning Part One just in case. Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Jeremy Dylan, making a return to the fourth chair after an absence of a couple of years. Our intrepid quartet answer a question relating to Ethan Hunt, and discuss the movie news including Greta Gerwig directing a couple of Narnia movies, the Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny box office and, of course, the trailer for Dune Part II. And they also review Elemental, the Wham! documentary, Name Me Lawand, and Run Rabbit Run. Enjoy.

For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham, Cody Dericks, Daniel Howat, Isaiah Washington & Will Mavity. Together, we're discussing the latest film from Pixar, "Elemental" starring Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O'Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera & Matt Yang King. After its world premiere at Cannes, expectations were brought down by the mixed reviews but having seen it ourselves now, what did we ultimately think of the animation studio's first rom-com? What did we think of its immigrant story exploring the relationship between a daughter and her parents? Tune in as we discuss these elements (pun intended) along with the film's score, animation, voice acting, awards potential, and more! Thank you, and enjoy! Elemental received a chilly reception at the box office in its opening weekend, and sparks are certainly flying between lovers and haters of Pixar's 27th feature film. Some call it one of Pixar's hottest while others find it to be watered down. So this week we review this force of nature film and discuss what works and doesn't, plus we play the Rotten Tomatoes Game to see how the critical consensus is shaping up. Elemental was directed by Peter Sohn, a longtime Pixar mainstay who previously directed The Good Dinosaur. Sohn also co-wrote the film with John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, with Pete Docter serving as executive producer. The voice cast includes Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Catherine O'Hara. Elemental premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and was released nationwide through Disney on June 16. The runtime is a breezy 109 minutes. Leah Lewis discusses her play, The Dialysis Project a one-woman multi-media performance piece, which investigates grief and resilience through the lens of self-administered home dialysis. Leah “performs” a dialysis treatment live on stage, and in doing so delivers a powerful visual metaphor for the accompanying stories of isolation, mortality, and sexuality. Tune in as Dr. Terry Dornak (Hello Wonderful Podcast) stops by the show to chat with Arthur about Netflix's The Half of it, the 2020 coming-of-age movie that follows introverted teenager Ellie Chu as she pens love letters on behalf of inarticulate jock Paul Munsky and sends them off to his crush Aster Flores. The catch: Ellie herself has caught feelings for Aster as well. On top of breaking down this queer and contemporary spin on Cyrano de Bergerac, Arthur and Terry address the usage of media like films and podcasts to process life experiences, the conservative attitudes that drive bigotry and ignorance in small-town communities, and the smell of freshly baked flour. Written and directed by Alice Wu (Saving Face), The Half of It stars Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer, Alexxis Lemire, Collin Chou, Wolfgang Novogratz, Becky Ann Baker, Catherine Curtin, and Enrique Murciano. Alice Wu began her career in software, but pivoted into screenwriting and directing in the late 90s. Her first film was a semi-autobiographic movie called Saving Face which she spent 5 years developing before it premiered at Toronto Film Festival in 2004. This brilliant film stars Michelle Krusiec as Wilhelmina 'Wil' Pang, a lesbian Chinese-American surgeon in New York City. Her identities as a gay woman, a Chinese-American in New York, and a devoted daughter to Ma, delicately played by Joan Chen, come into conflict when she falls for Vivian, played by Lynn Chen. This film deals with themes close to director Alice Wu's heart and navigates a tight-knit traditional community reckoning with its own notions of "saving face." While Wu's film was warmly received by critics and had a solid distribution from Sony Pictures, she did not go on to make another movie for almost two decades. Her follow-up film, which came to Netflix in 2020, is The Half of It, starring Leah Lewis as Ellie Chen, a graduating senior juggling her ambitions for college, the multiple jobs she takes on to support her father, and her identity as a queer woman. This movie takes a fun spin on the story of Cyrano de Bergerac when Ellie begins texting Aster on behalf of the lovable jock, Paul. Both of Alice Wu's films are tender yet amusing views into the intersectionality of Asian-American queer women, and Jake and Kevin recommend watching both! Why did Alice Wu take off so much time between these two movies, and why do we not see more films from her being produced? What is a himbo, really? Where is the change.org petition to get Joan Chen in more movies? These and more are (sort of) answered in this week's episode of Cinema Very Gay! In an...upsetting continuation of our miniseries on the Eating Out Cinematic Universe, we also spend some time digging into what went wrong with the third installment in the series, Eating Out: All You Can Eat. Neither as funny nor as titillating as the previous installment, has this series already peaked? Jim Verraros, we miss you!
This week we discuss The Half of It, a modern take on "Cyrano de Bergerac," starring Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer and Alexxis Lemire. While we're not confident this one is a rom com, it's easily one of the best movies we've watched yet.
Neha and Caria from Not Having It All podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Neha's choice The Half of It. The Half of It is a 2020 Netflix American coming-of-age comedy drama written and directed by Alice Wu. It stars Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu a shy Chinese-American, Daniel Diemer as jock Paul Munsky who gets Ellie to write his love letters to Alexxis Lemire's Aster Flores. Set in the small town of Squahamish, Ellie lives with her widowed father, the station master at the local station. She reluctantly agrees to write romantic letters on behalf of Paul - a modern Cyrano de Bergerac - and finds herself falling for Aster in the process. The Half of It has a lot of heart, it's impossible not to fall in love with Ellie, watching her slowly fall in love with Aster and form a genuinely touching friendship with Paul. It also resolutely does not follow the conventional paths of teen comedy dramas, which is refreshing for the teen genre. [supsystic-tables id=235] The scores for The Half of It was very high for recommendability and engagement, only losing points for repeat viewing to give a very respectable overall score of 3.78 What do you guys think?
