The podcast for project managers by project managers. In this second part of our conversation about Decoding Megaprojects with Bent Flyvbjerg, we explore the idea of "Pixar Planning," a method inspired by Pixar Studios' approach to making movies. Next, we tackle the concept of Modularity, and the significance of standardized, modular approaches in driving efficiency and reducing the frequency and severity of project failures. Table of Contents 01:22 … Pixar Planning06:33 … Iteration10:37 … Modularity12:46 … Modular vs. Bespoke16:20 … Kevin and Kyle18:04 … Examples from Shipping Containers22:26 … Advice from Bent28:26 … Contact Bent29:22 … Closing BENT FLYVBJERG: So, my advice to anybody working in any field is start thinking about how you modularize what you're doing. Don't ever do bespoke projects. Only if it's absolutely unavoidable should you ever do bespoke projects. You should always do projects that have an element of standardization and modularity. And the larger you can make that element of standardization and modularity, the more successful your projects will be. So that's the direction of travel for the whole project industry, no matter what type of project you're working in. And every one of us who's working in this industry can make a huge contribution by constantly thinking, how do we make what we do more modular and more standardized? WENDY GROUNDS: You're listening to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. I'm Wendy Grounds, and as always, I'm joined in the studio by the one and only Bill Yates. This is Episode 2 of our conversation with Bent Flyvbjerg. We are thrilled that he generously extended his time with us, and we are eager to share our conversation with you today. Before we dive in today's episode, we want to remind you to check out our website, Velociteach.com, where you can easily subscribe to the show so you never miss out on the latest insights and discussions. And you can also earn PDUs, your Professional Development Units, by listening to our podcast. Pixar Planning BILL YATES: We're going to jump right back in where we left off. Just a quick review. The first two things we talked about were: thinking from right to left; and thinking slow and acting fast. Bent, I want to shift to a third key concept. You know, where we've seen some of their amazing movies, and Pixar Studio follows this same idea “think slow, act fast” when they take their approach to making movies. Some of the great stories that I've read through “Creativity, Inc.,” written by Ed Catmull. As you and I were just talking before we even started recording this, such a great book, such a great leader Ed Catmull is. When I read the book back in 2016, I didn't latch on to what you found in this and through your research, which is this concept of Pixar planning. So this idea of Pixar planning, I know you go into it deep. What is it that makes that unique, and how can we apply these same concepts to our projects that Pixar does when they're developing their movies? BENT FLYVBJERG: So Pixar planning is not a concept that Ed Catmull came up with. This is what we call it because we think that their method is so important and ingenious that it deserves a name, you know. And it deserves the name “Pixar Planning” because Pixar is the organization who came up with this. And what surprised us was how much Gehry's method and the Pixar method, which was spearheaded by Ed Catmull, who was the CEO of Pixar then, he later became also CEO of Disney Animation and Pixar at the same time, and he's now retired. So he and his team pioneered this. And when I read Ed's book back in 2016 also, I was so excited because – and I started asking my students at Oxford to read the book. And at first they were like, what? We don't work in the movie industry, and certainly not animated movies. Like why would we want to read about animated movies? You know,
How do brains picture things internally, and how might you and I imagine differently? How have recent discoveries completely changed the debate and the way we understand internal experience? What does this have to do with Disney's Fantasia, or Pixar's aphantasia? Strap in for some very wild surprises today about our internal experiences, with guest Ed Catmull, founder of Pixar Studios.

The latest release from Pixar Studios, Elemental is a play on the classic theme of opposites attract. Set in a world where the elements of nature have been anthropomorphised and two opposing elements (fire and water) fall in love, it explores romance and relationships, along with ethnic and generational hang-ups. And while all of that sound close to what we'd expect from this studio, the box office (and reviews) have been underwhelming. We watch it for ourselves, and discuss whether it worked for us, and why it doesn't seem to have landed as well for others. Image Credit: inbetweendrafts.com

Elemental premieres in theaters nationwide June 16th. Host: Jamie Edited by: Jamie Broadnax Music by: Sammus
In this episode we chronicle the history of Disney in 1995. We talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly films Disney put out in 1995. We also talk about one great one… Toy Story was primarily put together by pioneering Pixar Studios. The movie set the standard for animated film the same way Snow White did five decades earlier. Terri Williams started working at Tower owned Central Valley Record Racks in 1975 at 15 years old. In 1978 when she talked about going to College, Russ Solomon told her “Stick with us, kid. I'll make you a star!” Terri was hired by Chris Hopson in the newly formed Tower Advertising Department. For the next 32 years she helped Chris Hopson and Tower Records establish a first rate Advertising Department. In 1982 Terri became the New York City Regional Marketing Manager, working to help establish Tower 4th & Broadway a full year before the store opened. Terri then went on to open up the whole Eastern corridor (Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and many more New York City stores). Following Terri's work on the East Coast she was promoted to National Marketing Manager and then Vice President of Marketing. On this episode of “2500 DelMonte Street, Terri reminisces about the early days of CVRR, explains for everyone exactly what CO-OP advertising is and how it worked at Tower, talks extensively about the work that went into getting the New York market up and running, living in Russ Solomon's NYC condo, the Store Opening party for 4th & Broadway and Andy Warhol's appearance there, the Talking Heads in-store for “Speaking In Tongues” featuring David Byrne and pop artist Robert Rauschenberg (and the Tower ad he designed for the event), another view of the Donald Trump story from the Trump Tower store, working with Rock The Vote, the reopening of Tower Lincoln Center with Elton John, Rudy Giuliani and Placido Domingo and insights working alongside Chris Hopson and Russ Solomon. Terri also talks about how Tower Records “Dancing Christmas Trees” was the last commercial project that the upstart Pixar Studios did before branching out into movies. We finish our conversation with Terri discussing her departing Tower Records in 2002 and why she didn't make it into the film “All Things Must Pass”.

No. 16: A trip to Pixar Mousetalgia's Best Ear Ever #4: A trip to Pixar from June 22, 2014. Kristen reports on an "Incredible" visit to Pixar in Emeryville! But first, we talk about the cost of a day at Disneyland (circa 2014) - do the recent price hikes change people's philosophies about visiting the parks, and if not, why? Team Mousetalgia discusses value vs. time vs. crowds, and we draw interesting conclusions. Next, a listener reviews the live action film "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride," Jeff announces a haunting new project, and then Kristen visits the Pixar Studios for an amazing day at the annual Cartoon Art Museum benefit. Highlights include a trip to the Pixar employee store, Pixar animator Jeff Pidgeon's drawing seminar, a Monsters U art display, lunch in the Luxo Cafe - and the highlight of the day, a panel discussing the Incredibles in honor of its tenth anniversary in the Steve Jobs Theatre, with a presentation by director Brad Bird and head of story Mark Andrews, among a stable of other Pixar animators that worked on the Academy Award-winning film. “THIS ISN'T FLYING, THIS IS FALLING WITH STYLE “On this week's episode of Retro Grade Podcast we talk about the beloved children's animated film, Toy Story. Released in 1995, this is the first feature length film released by Pixar Studios, directed by John Lasseter. We revisit the classic film from most of our childhoods, we reminisce about all the toys we had from this film and our memories of watching each film in the franchise and how they impacted our lives. This week's episode is organized in a much different way than it normally is, with us going into the production first and talking about the creation of Pixar the studio and the development struggles the animators went into making this film. We reference the documentary film The Pixar Story, and we use that to not only talk about the making of Toy Story, but also the film industry as a whole and how studio executives see the creative process, and how Hollywood has a tendency to romanticize long hours of labor and crunch an how we are still talking about this in our modern world. We talk about what we each love about the story, and how the evolution of Woody came about, and how in earlier versions of the film, Woody was a truly horrible character past the point of redemption. We go into the dialogue, the jokes, the set up and payoff of multiple story elements, and all the themes that are present for children and adults to appreciate. And lastly, we go over the serious allegations against people who worked on the film, including the director John Lasseter, screenwriter Joss Whedon, and early investor Steve Jobs, and how their images in the public eye have deteriorated since the release of the original film. So stay tuned, because this episode of Retro Grade Podcast just might change the way you see this classic film.Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

Bob and Brad go back to the Pixar Studios well for the 2008 blockbuster WALL-E. Certainly Pixar's most "adult" movie to this point, the guys grapple with its artistry versus its overall entertainment value, and offer their thoughts on where it falls in Pixar's overall rankings. Meanwhile, they sample Old Forester 150th Anniversary, a special release blend handcrafted my master taster Jackie Zykan. Their sample from Batch 1 is out-of-this-world, making it the perfect pairing for a space-themed movie. Film & Whiskey Podcast. New episodes every Monday. Bob and Brad return to Pixar Studios for their first sequel, 1999's Toy Story 2. The guys compare and contrast it to the 1995 original, while preparing themselves for a very deep dive on the movie's existential themes. Aside from the philosophy of it all, Bob and Brad discuss the vocal performances, including one particularly hot take. Meanwhile, they finally get around to Old Forester 1910. The Whiskey Row cousin of the fan-favorite 1920 Prohibition Style, this 93-proof double-oaked bourbon causes comparisons to Woodford Reserve and puts Brad in an impossible position when choosing his favorite.
