Chris and Alex are back in the warm embrace of Pixar Animation Studio, looking at their tenth computer animated film Up (Pete Docter, 2009) - a real high point in the company's run of critically and commercially successful animated features, and a film that comes almost at the midway point between Pixar today their debut with Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995) 30 years ago. To discuss whether adventure really is ‘out there,' Chris and Alex are joined by special guest Dr Tom Brown, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at Kings College London. Tom is the author of the monographs Spectacle in “Classical” Cinemas: Musicality and Historicity in the 1930s (2016) and Breaking the Fourth Wall: Direct Address in the Cinema (2012), as well as co-editor of The Biopic in Contemporary Film Culture (2014), Film Moments: Criticism, History, Theory (2010) and Film and Television After DVD (2008). Topics for this episode include how Pixar's computer-animated work can be understood according to a “classical” register via its meaningful construction and solidity of animated space; computer-animated staging and how meaning is carried in the studio's expressive use of mise-en-scène; Up as a stylistic ‘sweet spot' between photorealism and caricature; links between Pixar and both Classical Hollywood filmmakers like Frank Capra and the category of the middlebrow; what it means to be imprisoned by time in fantasy storytelling; and what Up's particular combination of the silly and the profound has to say about the weight of grief. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Episode 2466: Sarah Vowell tells the Untold Story of Public Service

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2025 42:26

So who, exactly is government. It's the question that Michael Lewis and an all-star team of writers address in a particularly timely new volume of essays. Who is Government? According to the Montana based Sarah Vowell, author of “The Equalizer”, an essay in the volume about the National Archives, government enables all American citizens to find stories about themselves. Vowell praises the modesty of most government employees. But she warns, the work of public servants like the National Archives' Pamela Wright is anything but modest and represents the core foundation of American democracy. Vowell's message is the antidote to the chainsaw. Essential listening in our surreal times. Here are the five Keen On America takeaways in this conversation with Vowell:* The National Archives as a democratic resource: Pamela Wright's work at the National Archives focused on digitizing records (over 300 million so far) to make them accessible to all Americans, regardless of where they live. This democratization of access allows people to bypass intimidating physical buildings and access their history from anywhere.* Public servants are often modest and unsung: Sarah describes how government workers like Wright tend to be modest, team-oriented people who focus on doing their job rather than seeking recognition. This stands in contrast to more visible or self-promoting public figures.* Personal connections to national archives: The conversation reveals how Americans can find their own family stories within government records. Sarah discovered her own family history, including her grandfather's WPA work and connections to the Cherokee Nation's Trail of Tears through archival documents.* Government's impact on opportunity: Sarah emphasizes how government programs like the Higher Education Act of 1965 created opportunities that changed her family's trajectory from poverty to professional careers through access to public education and financial assistance programs.* The interconnectedness of government services and American life: The conversation concludes with Sarah's observation about how government services form an "ecosystem of opportunity" that impacts everything from education to outdoor recreation jobs in Montana, with each part connected to others in ways that aren't always visible but are essential to how society functions.Sarah Vowell is the New York Times bestselling author of seven nonfiction books on American history and culture. By examining the connections between the American past and present, she offers personal, often humorous accounts of American history as well as current events and politics. Her book, Lafayette in the Somewhat United States, explores both the ideas and the battles of the American Revolution, especially the patriot founders' alliance with France as personified by the teenage volunteer in George Washington's army, the Marquis de Lafayette. Vowell's book, Unfamiliar Fishes is the intriguing history of our 50th state, Hawaii, annexed in 1898. Replete with a cast of beguiling and often tragic characters, including an overthrown Hawaiian queen, whalers, missionaries, sugar barons, Teddy Roosevelt and assorted con men, Unfamiliar Fishes is another history lesson in Americana as only Vowell can tell it – with brainy wit and droll humor. The Wordy Shipmates examines the New England Puritans and their journey to and impact on America. She studies John Winthrop's 1630 sermon “A Model of Christian Charity” and the bloody story that resulted from American exceptionalism. And she also traces the relationship of Winthrop, Massachusetts' first governor, and Roger Williams, the Calvinist minister who founded Rhode Island – an unlikely friendship that was emblematic of the polar extremes of the American foundation. Throughout she reveals how American history can show up in the most unexpected places in our modern culture, often in poignant ways. Her book Assassination Vacation is a haunting and surprisingly hilarious road trip to tourist sites devoted to the murders of presidents Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley. Vowell examines what these acts of political violence reveal about our national character and our contemporary society. She is also the author of two essay collections, The Partly Cloudy Patriot and Take the Cannoli. Her first book Radio On, is her year-long diary of listening to the radio in 1995. She was guest editor for The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2017. Most recently she contributed an essay for Who Is Government? The Untold Story of Public Service by Michael Lewis (Riverhead, March 18, 2025). Vowell's thirty years as a journalist and columnist began in the freewheeling atmosphere of the weekly newspapers of the 1990s, including The Village Voice, the Twin Cities' City Pages and San Francisco Weekly, where she was the pop music columnist. An original contributor to McSweeney's, she has worked as a columnist for Salon and Time, a reviewer for Spin, a reporter for GQ, and a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, where she covered politics, history, education and life in Montana. She was a contributing editor for the public radio show This American Life from 1996-2008, where she produced numerous commentaries and documentaries and toured the country in many of the program's live shows. Her notable side projects have included a decade as the founding president of 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring and writing center for students aged 6-18 in Brooklyn; producing a filmed oral history series commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Montana Constitutional Convention of 1972; and occasional voice acting, including her role as teen superhero Violet Parr in Brad Bird's Academy Award-winning The Incredibles, and its sequel, Incredibles 2, from Pixar Animation Studios.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Focus More to Work Less is covered in this podio, along with the following subjects: - Work-life integration (not balance) - Managing Your Focus - Boost your productivity *************************************** When it comes to maximizing your time and achieving a better work-life integration, managing your focus is key. By honing in on what truly matters and prioritizing tasks that align with your goals, you can reclaim more time for the things that bring you joy and fulfillment. Instead of striving for a perfect work-life balance, consider aiming for work-life integration, where you seamlessly blend your professional and personal responsibilities in a way that works best for you. Remember, focusing on what's most important to you can help you work smarter, not harder, and ultimately lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. I'll be talking with Chad Brown about Focus More to Work Less. Chad Brown is a leadership engagement expert. He coaches founders and executives in the art and science of leadership for themselves, their teams, and clients to create new, unprecedented results and experience fulfillment in their work. Over the last 7 years, Chad has trained and developed leaders at globally recognized brands like Lulu Lemon, and Ironclad Document Services along with many burgeoning start ups. When he is not engaging in meaningful conversations with leaders, you will find (or won't be able to find) Chad on a wild adventure in the mountains with his family. Creating Clarity   In this episode of Richer Soul, we dive into the world of leadership engagement with Chad Brown, a seasoned expert in coaching founders and executives. Chad has a unique approach to helping leaders unlock their full potential by mastering both the art and science of leadership. Through his coaching, he empowers his clients to achieve unprecedented results while also finding fulfillment in their work. Let's explore Chad's fascinating journey, the insights he's gained from his experiences, and the lessons he shares about leadership, growth, and living a purpose-driven life.   Takeaways: Leadership as a Balance of Art and Science: Chad explains that effective leadership is both an art and a science. While technical skills and knowledge are important, emotional intelligence, trust-building, and personal fulfillment are equally critical in becoming a successful leader. Work-Life Integration, Not Balance: Chad challenges the traditional notion of work-life balance, calling it a myth. Instead, he advocates for work-life integration, where professional and personal lives are aligned to bring purpose and fulfillment across all areas of life. The Power of Trust in Leadership: Chad highlights two types of trust: one that can accelerate team performance and one that can be devastating. Understanding and fostering the right kind of trust in your team and clients can significantly boost the effectiveness and success of a leader. Creating New Results through Leadership: Leadership, according to Chad, is about guiding teams and clients to create unprecedented results. This requires constant development, tough conversations, and a willingness to push beyond comfort zones.   Money Learnings: Lessons from Financial Struggles: Chad's early experiences with money were marked by financial instability, particularly from his father's work as a drywall contractor. These struggles taught him about the scarcity of money, and the whiplash effect financial issues can have on family plans and emotions, like a canceled family trip to Disneyland that left a lasting impact. Work Ethic from a Young Age: Chad started working at the age of 12, helping in his father's drywall business. This experience gave him a strong work ethic but also ingrained some less-than-ideal money habits that he later had to overcome. His experience taught him that hard work doesn't necessarily equate to smart money management. Changing the Money Narrative: Chad discusses the importance of rethinking how we view money. By shifting away from unhealthy habits and beliefs that were picked up during childhood, it's possible to form a healthier relationship with money and create financial stability. Financial Coaching in Leadership: Chad shares how leaders often need to develop their financial understanding to be better managers and decision-makers. His coaching includes guiding leaders to overcome their limiting financial beliefs, thereby unlocking new possibilities for both personal and professional growth.   Bio: Chad Brown is a leadership engagement expert and the founder of Chad L. Brown Coaching & Consulting. He coaches leaders to create new, unprecedented results through a combination of leadership science and personal fulfillment. His passion for leadership ignited while running a media production company, Shade Tree Films, which serviced global brands like Volkswagen, Target, and Pixar Animation Studios. After selling the company in 2021, Chad focused on coaching full-time, working with founders and executives to help them navigate the challenges of leadership. When not working with clients, Chad enjoys embarking on wild adventures in the Utah mountains with his family.   Key Discussion Points: Early Experiences with Money and Work: Chad shared that his early experiences with money were not ideal. Growing up in a small town in Utah, his family struggled financially. His father, a drywall contractor, worked hard but often faced financial instability, which left a lasting impression on Chad. One particularly painful memory was a canceled family trip to Disneyland due to unexpected financial troubles. This experience shaped Chad's perspective on money, hard work, and the importance of financial stability. From Shade Tree Films to Leadership Coaching: Chad's journey into leadership coaching began with the founding of Shade Tree Films in 2008. Liquid Church is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, specifically, a non-denominational Christian Church, and the purpose of using this media is non commercial in nature.  Inside Out 2 continues the story of a little girl named Riley as she navigates the challenges of adolescence. With new emotions like Anxiety and Envy joining the core group—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—Riley faces the complexities of growing up, including friendships, self-discovery, and emotional changes. The film explores how her emotions adapt to her evolving life, emphasizing the importance of embracing all feelings to maintain emotional balance. What about you? Are you overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety? God offers peace through prayer. Like Riley's emotions, our anxiety must find its place under God's control. By praying, trusting God, and focusing on His plan, we can experience peace that surpasses understanding, even in a world full of worries. Remember, true peace comes from the presence of Christ, not the absence of problems. The book, based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—along with interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—paints a detailed portrait of a complex and visionary leader. The biography traces Jobs' life from his early days in Silicon Valley, where he was raised by adoptive parents, through his co-founding of Apple in the garage of his parents' house with Steve Wozniak. It explores his innovative work in making computers more accessible and visually appealing to the general public, starting with the Apple I and the more successful Apple II.Isaacson discusses Jobs' forced departure from Apple after power struggles with the board and then delves into his ventures during this period, including the founding of NeXT, the purchase of what would become Pixar Animation Studios, and his eventual return to Apple.Upon returning to Apple, Jobs revitalized the struggling company with a series of groundbreaking products, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. “All of our emotions are there for a good reason. They're positive. They want to help. And a little anxiety is good. … All of society is saying, ‘Get rid of emotion. It's awful. It's evil.' It's not true.” In this episode, Mark welcomes Pete Docter, executive producer of Inside Out 2, and the Oscar-winning director of Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out. Pete joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1990 at twenty-one years old as its third animator, and is now Pixar's chief creative officer. Mark and Pete discuss the ins and outs of Inside Out 2, including its themes about emotion, psychology, adolescence, and the discovery and acceptance of who we are. Pete reflects on the power of music to convey unconscious meaning, alongside the subtle and sophisticated animation techniques used by Pixar today. We learn about the new emotion characters (including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui), as well as those that almost made the cut. And Pete comments on the spiritual and moral dimensions that Inside Out 2 is able to explore. About Pete Docter Pete Docter is the Oscar-winning director of Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out, and chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios. He most recently directed Disney and Pixar's Oscar-winning feature film Soul with producer Dana Murray and co-director Kemp Powers, which is now streaming on Disney+. Starting at Pixar in 1990 as the studio's third animator, Docter collaborated on and helped develop the story and characters for Toy Story, Pixar's first full-length animated feature film, for which he also was supervising animator. He served as a storyboard artist on A Bug's Life and wrote initial story treatments for both Toy Story 2 and WALL•E. Aside from directing his three films, Docter also executive produced Monsters University and the Academy Award–winning Brave. Docter's interest in animation began at the age of eight, when he created his first flipbook. He studied character animation at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California, where he produced a variety of short films, one of which won a Student Academy Award. Those films have since been shown in animation festivals worldwide and are featured on the Pixar Short Films Collection, volume 2. Upon joining Pixar, he animated and directed several commercials, and has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature–winners Up and Inside Out and nominee Monsters, Inc., and Best Original Screenplay for Up, Inside Out and WALL•E. In 2010, Up also was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Show Notes Continuity and discontinuity in Inside Out 2 Pete Docter comments on the main character/setting of Inside Out series: Riley and what's going on inside her head. Some psychologists think there are 27 emotions Puberty and adolescence New emotions: Bringing Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui (Boredom) into the picture Anxiety as the new protagonist Changing body and outgrowing an old sweater Riley's pimple: “That was something that Kelsey Mann, the director, was big on from the beginning. He would say, we were so used to seeing characters represented in this perfect, idealized way. And yet, when we look at the mirror, we realize, ‘Hey, I don't measure up to that.' That was kind of the message of the film from the beginning—is learning to accept yourself. You know, the flaws and all, because that's so much of our civilization is measuring ourselves against others. And especially that period in time growing up, you're suddenly socially aware, and where you fit in or don't.” From family to friends as the dominant group “All of our emotions are there for a good reason. They're positive. They want to help. And a little anxiety is good. Lisa L'Amour, who was a consultant on the film, her big thing is like, all of society is saying, ‘Get rid of emotion. It's awful. It's evil.' It's not true.” Researching the psychology of emotion for the film, and experimenting with various emotions as characters Anxiety as subtly controlling Schadenfreude almost made Inside Out and Inside Out 2 as a gag. Anxiety is not directly related to puberty. “Who are we? What are the things that make us who we are? Is it just our experiences, our beliefs, our actions that we take? And all of those start to get folded into the film.” “For me, the creative process is all about the nitty gritty details.” “So really that's just what I'm trying to do is for us in that room, as we're making it: Are we engaged? Are we emotional?” The complexity of guilt and shame Learning that sincerity—the truth of the character—is the key Special Effects work in Inside Out 2 The subtle and sophisticated storytelling device of Riley's eyes. How digital animation works today—more like a puppet than a drawing. Music as an unconscious communicator Dr. Paul Ekman: Emotions are largely under the hood. Soul (2020) and the philosophy of dualism as a Greek concept Embodied souls—a colliding, intertwined, inseparable reality Understanding the instrumentality of the brain The amazing amount of goodness that Pixar has injected into the world Pete Docter on working with Amy Poehler, Tony Hale, and Maya Hawke “Our emotions are really on our team.” Fear as a dominant emotion for the era we live in Joy vs Sadness or Joy vs Fear How Pete Docter's faith informs his approach to Inside Out “One other little bit of research we did that I was shocked by is that there's apparently a part of your brain that lights up especially when you watch animation.”
