New Poll Shows Foulkes with 20-Point Lead Over McKee. Salve's Katie Sonder Breaks It Down

Send us Fan MailBill Bartholomew talks with Katie Sonder, Associate Director and Fellow at the Salve Regina University Pell Center, about the center's August 2026 Voices of Value poll and what it says about Rhode Island's Democratic and Republican primary races. The conversation focuses on the headline McKee-Folkes result, the unusually high number of undecided voters, and how academic polling can fill a gap left by shrinking local media polling.Bill Bartholomew frames the poll, questions the methodology, and argues that academic polling is becoming more important as traditional outlets poll less often. Katie Sonder explains the survey design, the likely-voter screen, the two-step question process for undecided respondents, and why the Pell Center launched the project in the first place.Key topicsIn this episode, the main headline is the Democratic gubernatorial primary poll showing Helena Folkes ahead of incumbent Governor Dan McKee, 48% to 28%.Katie Sonder says the most surprising finding is the size of the undecided bloc, especially in down-ballot races like Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General, where nearly half of likely voters are unsure.Sonder explains the poll's two-question method for undecideds: respondents first pick among candidates, then are asked again if they have to choose. The Pell Center's Voices of Value project is designed to track Rhode Island views on state issues and national issues, including democracy, polarization, media habits, legislation, and bridge reconstruction.Bill and Katie discuss the broader role of academia in polling and journalism as local media budgets shrink and fewer outlets produce their own statewide polls.Sonder says the Pell Center sees the poll as a public good and a bridge between the university and the community. On the Democratic side, Sonder points to crowded fields and lower name recognition as reasons for uncertainty in races like Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.Bill notes that in the Lieutenant Governor race, Sabina Matos and Zay Collin are near the top, but the undecided share remains very high.In the Attorney General race, Kim Ahern leads the pack, but 46% of voters are still unsure. The Senate discussion turns to the three-way race involving Jack Reed, Connor Burbridge, and Dr. Luis Daniel Munoz, with Bill arguing that Burbridge's 12% reflects real campaign momentum. On the Republican side, Sonder explains that the smaller sample size means a larger margin of error, but Elaine Poirino still holds a notable lead over Aaron and Jukian.Bill emphasizes the transparency of the Pell Center's materials, including the report, crosstabs, methodology, and survey questions.Timestamps00:00 - New Pell Center poll and the McKee-Folkes Democratic primary headline00:44 - Katie Sonder on the biggest surprise: the undecided vote02:30 - How the poll's two-step undecided question works04:49 - Why the Pell Center launched Voices of Value06:03 - Academia, journalism, and the shrinking local polling ecosystem07:14 - Why the Pell Center sees polling as a public service10:48 - How Katie thinks about reliability and academic rigor11:30 - Why down-ballot races have so many undecided voters12:40 - Using the poll to inform voters and candidate research13:10 - Jack Reed race, Connor Burbridge, and campaign momentum14:10 - Lieutenant governor race read: Matos, Zay Collin, and weak showings14:40 - Republican primary polling challenges and Elaine Poirino's lead15:28 - Sample size, margin of error, and confidence on the GOP side16:44 - Why the Republican race remains too fluid to call18:39 - Where to find the report, crosstabs, methodology, and survey questions19:24 - Transparency, expertise, and why the poll matters in the civic landscape Support the showFollow Bill on Instagram and YouTube

Episode Notes Notes go hereRabbi Shulman addresses the apparent tension in the Torah's treatment of נדרים and שבועות: Chazal often criticize making vows, yet the Torah opens Parashat Matot with the laws of nedarim and even allows for their annulment. He explains (based on Rav Tzadok and the Zohar) that vows are spiritually valid only when a person's רצון is profoundly aligned with רצון ה׳—to the point of “זה הדבר,” where speech becomes a vehicle for דבר ה׳. Hatarat nedarim then functions as a corrective mechanism when vows emerge from confused or misguided רצון rather than authentic דבקות. Gad and Reuven chose it for material reasons, but Menashe received it from Moshe as part of Hashem's plan to extend the holiness of Eretz Yisrael and prepare for the ultimate expansion of its borders in the era of Moshiach. The key is attitude: a Jew may be sent beyond familiar boundaries on a holy mission, yet must never lose the deep love for Eretz Yisrael or become settled in golus. Like Menashe, we are called to remember our true home, reject the mentality of exile, and use every place we find ourselves to advance Moshe's vision and bring the Geulah closer.

In this Parsha Review Podcast episode on the double portion Matos-Masei, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the continuation of Pinchas' story from last week. As the Jewish people prepare for war against Midian, Moshe sends 1,000 men from each tribe along with Pinchas — carrying the sacred vessels and trumpets. Rashi explains that Pinchas was singled out because he had begun the mitzvah of zealously defending Hashem's honor and was therefore told to complete it. The episode also highlights the Midrashic connection between Pinchas and Yosef through his mother's lineage (Putiel / Yisro).Rabbi Wolbe focuses on the seven names of Yisro, particularly “Putiel.” While it can be interpreted negatively (fattening calves for idol worship), it can also be seen positively: Yisro was at the “fat” (peak) of his illustrious career and sacrificed everything to join the Jewish people. This leads to a powerful discussion on perspective — choosing to see the positive in people, situations, spouses, children, and even world events. The episode ties beautifully into the Three Weeks: lasting change in avoiding Lashon Hara comes not from simply stopping negative speech, but from changing how we view others. Rabbi Wolbe encourages judging the whole person favorably (kol ha'adam l'kaf zechus), practicing hakaras hatov (gratitude), and refusing to be kafui tov (one who rejects the good done for us). He applies this to family life, parenting, and current events, urging listeners to avoid knee-jerk negativity from media narratives._____________This episode of the Parsha Review Podcast is dedicated in honor of Lenny & Teresa FriedmanDownload & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 7, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on July 9, 2026_____________Subscribe: Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parsha-review-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1651930083)Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/22lv1kXJob5ZNLaAl6CHTQ) to stay inspired! Share your questions at awolbe@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Help us share Jewish wisdom globally by sponsoring an episode at torchweb.org. Parshiyos Matos Mas'ei -The 3 Weeks   Who is Responsible for Our Governance?   Month of Tamuz classes are sponsored in memory of Doris Lombardi by Brittany and Daniel Lombardi. Grandma Doris was strong, warm, giving, loving, hilarious, and full of life. She was an ardent lover and supporter of the Jewish people and Israel and she constantly conveyed those values to her family. The fullness with which she lived and loved us inspires our family regularly and we hope that we continue to carry on her legacy in our actions and in the way we raise our children.   This week's class is dedicated by Jimmy and Janie Tate and family In loving memory of Stanley Tate; Shmuel ben Ya'akov. His pioneering and indomitable spirit built our family and led our South Florida community. His legendary innovations combined with his will, strength, and stalwart integrity are a tremendous inspiration and example to our family and an incredible contribution to our Jewish Nation. May his memory be blessed and his soul constantly elevated.
