A journey through 35 years of house from the godfather of UK rave. In popular mythology, the '90s are without question, the halcyon days of dance music—an era of free raves and unadulterated hedonism. It's a myth that Matthew Nelson, AKA Slipmatt, knows better than most–he was there. During the late '80s, as the rave scene in the UK began to boom, Nelson began moonlighting as a DJ. He would land his first residency at Raindance, the East London rave that launched in September 1989 and would become the UK's first legal rave. By 1991 , he'd reach number two in the UK charts with "On A Ragga Tip" as one-half of SL2 and two years later, sell over 10,000 copies of SMD#1. Nelson has got a lot to share (as you'll see in his interview) so we'll let him do the talking. He's been variously called the godfather of rave and happy hardcore, but what you'll hear on RA.958 is as "a journey through my 35 years of house." A DJ with this much pedigree brings much more than that, of course: touching on the breakbeat, jungle and acid house that soundtracked that golden age, as well as nods to the rich cross-pollination with scenes beyond the UK, from Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" to Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You." Allen Karpinski is a song writer, guitarist and founding member of the Ohio band The Six Parts Seven. Fellow Ohioan, Joey Beltram is this the singer, songwriter behind Goodmorning Valentine. Over the course of a weekend in 2006, the two bands came together in a small in studio in Kent, Ohio. What yielded was a beautiful collaborative collection of songs called Kissing Distance (out February 16th via Suicide Squeeze). Joey and Allen share the magic of the experience and the spark that inspired this collaboration.  Joey tells us how an unusual spontaneity and openness in the studio led to a beautiful and novel experience for the band. Joey lends us some in-sight on the recording and writing process, they talk Kinkos, the fall of Pitchfork and we hear a couple tunes. We premiere new techno from one of the most exciting dance music producers coming out of Los Angles right now, 1morning. The rising star releases his debut EP on Fixed Rhythms, showing his innovative production techniques as he harnesses a loop-driven sound that is oozing with 90's flair & syncopated funk. LA based 1morning has been turning heads within the American techno scene as of late, and he's set his sights on conquering European dancefloors. A recent stint on Hör alongside some dates around Europe and some notable appearances across Basement New York, Nowadays and more have been impressing dancers and promoters alike. The young producer has only sprinkled a small bit of music across the techno world but his debut self-released EP ‘TRANSITIONS' was the perfect introduction to his vintage and locked groove style of production. 1morning also boasts a forthcoming split EP with Irish native Céilí on his impront Mála Ádh. Taking inspiration from the likes of Robert Armani, DJ Rush, and more, he captures an old-school style of production that focusses on rhythm, funk and grit. This is no-bullshit, no-business, all-thriller techno for the real ravers. We premiere ‘Signal Flow,' a high-octane and driving piece of 90's inspired techno funk. The surging minimalistic style that 1morning has crafted allows each elements to not only breathe, but shine. This intricate approach to sound selection provides an infectious call & response that makes the loop completely contagious. Sharp stabbing synths that leave traces of vintage Joey Beltram take centre stage, with shuffling high-hats and delayed claps keeping the rhythm pulsing and gripping. This is true loop-driven techno, made with meticulous attention to detail. 1morning -------------------- SC: @1morning IG: www.instagram.com/1morning_/ Four Four Magazine --------------------------- FB: www.facebook.com/FOURFOURDANCE/ IG: www.instagram.com/fourfourmagazine/ Web: www.fourfourmag.com/

In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Joey Beltram”. “Joey Beltram” started DJ-ing at the young age of 13 in Queens, New York. In 1990, Joey had his breakthrough hit “Energy Flash”; which became a classic. Take a listen to it here. Joey used the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer to craft the unique, spacey overtones of “Energy Flash”. This was innovative at the time. In addition to this, "Energy Flash" release, had a profound effect on the EDM techno scene. During this time, European techno had a firm grip on the genre but with the release of "Energy Flash", a bridge between American and European techno was created. “Joey Beltram” became a highly influential figure in EDM and with his release of “Energy Flash” he helped shape the direction of what techno is today. That's it for this week's Vinyl's from the past; now let's get back to more music. Lunar Disco: Start – 17:42   and   End – 24:23Hailing from France, Lunar Disco is a duo consisting of Kate Elsworth and Nicolas Blistene. Our first premiere of the day comes from rising Irish techno producer ‘Hunteryx'. The youngster offers up a tool focussed techno track that leans on familiar samples and shuffles to create a proper party track. Arising from the ashes of Louth's rave scene Hunteryx has become a name to watch within recent months. The promising DJ and Producer from Drogheda is one of many DJs and producers shifting their focus to hardgroove and 90's inspired sounds. Known for playing a party-focused brand on the loop-driven sound of hardgroove, Hunteryx has put his own spin on the sound, incorporating both rave and hip-hop-inspired samples. This party-orientated style of producing has seeped into his DJ sets and has earned him slots across Earth Nightclub in Drogheda, Centrepoint in Bowlane, and The Soundhouse in Dublin. He looks to add a nuanced viewpoint to groove-oriented techno, drawing inspiration from producers such as modern producers such as Dylan Fogarty and Tafkamp. We premiere ‘Rock Da Haus' a funk-laced slice of Chicago-influenced techno. Blurring the lines between formative hip-house cuts, rave-soaked techno from the likes of Joey Beltram and more modern interpretations coming from artists such as KETTAMA, Tafkamp, and young gun Dylan Fogarty, it's clear that Hunteryx has a clear plan as to what direction he is aiming in with his productions. Shuffling hat's play of a dynamic kick and bass section lay a slick and pulsing foundation for the track. Familiar vocal samples and rave stabs catch listeners' ears for an instant dancefloor hit. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us." Three New York visionaries discuss the city's '90s heyday. '90s nightlife in New York conjures images of Party Monster, jacking disco house and a rotating cast of mega clubs that saw thousands of revellers pass through their doors each weekend. From Limelight and Sound Factory to Palladium and countless others, clubbing was hitting its stride in New York, while producers like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones and Damon Wild were producing game-changing 12-inches. But it was also the beginning of a decline, catalysed by the rollout of Mayor Rudy Giuliani's discriminatory policies that slowly gutted the club scene and the communities that called it home. To honour Resident Advisor's partnership with Wire Festival in Brooklyn this weekend, we're revisiting a panel recorded at our 24/7 party at Nowadays in 2018. We tasked the beloved Brooklyn fanzine Love Injection with presenting discussions covering five decades of dance music history. In this panel, Strictly Rhythm cofounder Gladys Pizarro, DJ and producer Lenny Dee and drag superstar and vogue performer Kevin Aviance spoke with journalist (and former RA staffer) Max Pearl about the rise and fall of the city's club scene during its golden decade. They also discussed how the city was sequestered, forcing many artists at the vanguard of '90s-era techno to make music and throw their own parties as the scene grew and shifted beneath the weight of city-wide reforms. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us," said Lenny D. "So when we were doing it, we were making parties out in Brooklyn. A lot of music at that time was made here in Brooklyn—Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Tommy Musto, Damon Wild. So we had this scene where we're making great music, but no one's letting us play, so we're just going to do it ourselves." Listen to the episode in full.

We have the pleasure of hosting a live club recording from Jon Hussey at The Sugar Club for RLSD Records. Jon need's little introduction, as he has been a key cog in the Dublin techno machine for many years, and boasts legendary status in Irish dance music's framework. Jon showcases why he's earned fabled status as a DJ with a trip through various moods, as Jon intertwines jacking grooves, deep and windings atmospheres and rolling bass swarms wrapped up into an hour of techno funk. Jon Hussey‘s name carries weight within Irish techno, from playing alongside some of the biggest names in the industry such as Jeff Mills, Joey Beltram, The Advent, Neil Landstrumm, Thomas P Heckmann and many many more to playing across Europe in some of the desired clubs. Jon has frequently played in Berlin over the years, and notably played alongside Mark Broom in the infamous Tresor. Jon creates expertly crated techno, that is categorically deep, rolling and packed with intricate rhythmic touches, but when speaking about Jon, categorising it is utterly pointless, as his evolution as a DJ and producer is incessant. Jon has released music on Irish imprints Earwiggle, Delinquent Delivery and RLSD. His collaborations with the late Stuey Lyons [R.I.P.] are thought to be some of his best work, receiving widespread notoriety and support from some of the leads techno DJs in the world. Jon also notably had his work on RLSD remixed by Japanese techno icon Takaaki Itoh. There's something about a Jon Hussey mix that seem's instantly identifiable , which on the surface makes no sense at all as Jon has an extremely eclectic style, but his mixes and DJ set's have a real charm and originality that doesn't come by too often, and they're particularly distinguishable. This mix is no different, as Jon skips through a multitude of moods and avenues, letting tracks breathe at the right moments, and smashing the accelerator when needs be. Jon hammers through slamming grooves and intertwines warpy rollers alongside classic jacking cuts. Live recordings seem to be a little less common than they were a couple of years ago, maybe because there's an enormous amount of pressure for DJs to cough up podcasts every few months, which takes focus from live recordings. This is a raw live recording that's a captivating representation of a real DJ at work, redirecting the vibe at the pinnacle moment's and changing mixing style's based on the room. This is a real treat. Jon Hussey ---------------------- SC: https://soundcloud.com/jonhussey FB: https://www.facebook.com/DJJonHussey IG: https://www.instagram.com/jon_hussey_/ Four Four Magazine

In this episode I'm speaking with Chicago born, Detroit raised DJ, music producer, musician Alton Miller, who is widely known for his impact and as a pioneer of Detroit electronic music culture. Having started legendary club night Music Institute with George Baker and Chez Demier, working on Kevin Saunderson's KMS Records, Derrick May's label Transmat, signed artists like Joey Beltram, releasing five albums of his own, including a long list of EP's and touring the world for over three decades. Miller currently resides in Johannesburg, and during COVID, launched his own Beard grooming product line and a non for profit to develop skills and empowering young women in rural areas of South Africa, while continuing to release music. I sat down with Alton Miller at the end of an impromptu Australian tour, which he described as an exploration to revisit his footprints and to commence touring again to spread house and soul music to the world. We spoke about his early Detroit experiences and some recent ones, his label work throughout the years, his recent contribution projects and the choice of a “slow burn” career in electronic music. Renaat Vandepapeliere, boss, A&R and Factotum of the all-mighty Techno label R&S Records needs little introduction. His career spans over 3 decades in which his visionary soul gave a platform to express their selves to some of the most prolific and forward-think artists of the electronic music scene such as Derrick May, Joey Beltram and Aphex Twin, while today, James Blake, Paula Temple, Tale of Us, Nonkeen (Nihls Frahm) all walk in the glorious heritage of R&S! Today, Renaat and his label have earned him the title of being an uncompromising pioneer, and although his role as boss and A&R of the label is very time consuming, Renaat still is a remarkable selector who truly enjoys taking risks beyond trends...

Vanya Koreya - 1902s Today we premiere a track from one of our favourite artists of all time, and an act who has literally been there and done that within the dance music scene, the mighty and legendary CJ Bolland. Set to be released on RAW, who after more than 5 years in the techno scene as a promoter, label, and agency, the Paris based collective launched their first vinyl and digital compilation earlier in the year. They have clearly set the bar high and have followed up with yet another VA this time entitled 'Third Eye' which is still a mystery as to who is featured. To say we're excited to premiere this track 'Red Raw' from CJ Bolland is an understatement. Hailing from Durham in the UK, but very much engrained in Antwerp, Belgium from a young age, CJ Bolland is well and truly a legend of techno and dance music in general. He cut his teeth in dance music from an early age as his parents ran a club in Antwerp, with his mother DJing there. He grew up listening to a diverse selection of electronic music, but by the late '80s he had devoted most of his time to house and techno when he began releasing tracks. At the time he was one of the first producers to ever be signed by the then iconic R&S Records, he since has worked with everyone from Jeff Mills to Joey Beltram. Bolland is one of the most consistent producers in the history of dance music, with numerous stone cold classics that stand the test of time, and are regularly features on dance floors, radio and mixes worldwide. The full VA release 'Third Eye' is available for free download on Monday, May 10th via the RAW Bandcamp page. Awaken your third eye. Bio: The YellowHeads was formed by some musicians who quickly discovered a key common denominator that unites them: a strong passion for music. What came next was a merging of their styles, different but parallel, as their musical roots come from the same place, and they formed the crew The YellowHeads. This union’s strength is in their sound, going from highly atmospheric electronic music to a techno sound with retro touches. Their releases have seen the light on the biggest labels such as: Filth on Acid, We Are The Brave, Kraftek, Suara, Octopus, Tronic, Intec, etc..., with collaborations and remixes by: Umek, Pleasurekraft, Cari Lekebusch, Ramon Tapia, Alex Bau, Joey Beltram, Cristian Varela, Samuel L Session, Misstress Barbara, Wehbba, Mark Broom and many more known artists. The YellowHeads has been a headliner at some of the best festivals, performing with: Pendulum, Dirtyphonics, Umek, Joseph Capriati, Paco Osuna, Luigi Madonna, Alan Fitzpatrick, Paul Ritch, Pan-Pot, M.A.N.D.Y., Kaiserdisco, Popof and many more! besides having played in the best clubs of the globe, with more than 100 performances per year! While also being played many times by Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Alan Fitzpatrick, Pan-Pot among others at their gigs. In 2019, they were #18 in the World DJs Techno List and their incredible “Prison Planet” track was #2 for several months and number #16 in the Best Techno Tracks list [Beatport], not forgetting their HIT called "Submerged", which also reached number 2 on the Techno charts (UPDATE 2020) . Their track called "Planet X" is the best Techno track of the year with more than 3 months TOP #1 and 8 months later it is still among the top # 5!, It also reached top # 2 on the general charts of all genres! the track was played by artist like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, David Guetta and others outside the Techno genre In 2020 The YellowHeads was in the Top 5 Techno artists, and their Reload Record was in the Top 10 Techno labels + their track called "Planet X" was the most streamed and sold track around the world. Their music is amazing, their live performances are exciting, but do not forget their look is truly the icing on this great musical project called: The YellowHeads! TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ ZADIG Zadig gets into the rave scene in the 90s. He makes his place rapidly into this growing community and stands out as an unavoidable figure of the Norman scene. But five years of mixing Indus, Hardcore or Acid music finally gave him an oppressive sense of being closed in. Moreover, he no longer identifies with this environment and decides to turn to Techno, a much more basic but also wider style of music. Highly influenced by Jeff Mills, Joey Beltram, Surgeon or the labels Synewave, Lost or Tresor, Sylvain is at a turning point in his career. He then moves to Paris and holds various odd jobs. Thanks to these encounters and the experience he has gained, Zadig then starts Construct Re-Form, a label on a human scale which was initially created to release his own productions. Construct Re-Form almost immediately welcomes 3 talented DJs known as Antigone, Voiski and Birth of Frequency. Zadig then becomes an astute label manager who provides technical advice and, perhaps most importantly, human support to his three protégés. Considering the recent results of the label and its growing recognition, this formula works wonders.
