A journey through 35 years of house from the godfather of UK rave. In popular mythology, the '90s are without question, the halcyon days of dance music—an era of free raves and unadulterated hedonism. It's a myth that Matthew Nelson, AKA Slipmatt, knows better than most–he was there. During the late '80s, as the rave scene in the UK began to boom, Nelson began moonlighting as a DJ. He would land his first residency at Raindance, the East London rave that launched in September 1989 and would become the UK's first legal rave. By 1991 , he'd reach number two in the UK charts with "On A Ragga Tip" as one-half of SL2 and two years later, sell over 10,000 copies of SMD#1. Nelson has got a lot to share (as you'll see in his interview) so we'll let him do the talking. He's been variously called the godfather of rave and happy hardcore, but what you'll hear on RA.958 is as "a journey through my 35 years of house." A DJ with this much pedigree brings much more than that, of course: touching on the breakbeat, jungle and acid house that soundtracked that golden age, as well as nods to the rich cross-pollination with scenes beyond the UK, from Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" to Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You." Schneider Electric First in Industry to Obtain Higher Level Cybersecurity Certification for EcoStruxure IT DCIM Solutions IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 certification provides higher level of protection against cyberthreats for EcoStruxureTM IT Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) solutions Independent certification process features rigorous testing and assessment Network Management Card 3 (NMC3) only network management card to obtain this level of encryption and robustness Cybersecurity Certification for EcoStruxure Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced an industry first: its EcoStruxure IT Network Management Card 3 (NMC3) platform has obtained a new and higher level of cybersecurity certification, making it the first Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) network card to achieve IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 (SL2) designation from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). TÜV Rheinland, one of the world's largest and leading testing providers, has independently certified the NMC3 platform, ensuring vendor products designed for data centre and distributed IT environments meet a set of well-defined security requirements and undergo thorough testing and assessment. This new and higher level of cybersecurity certification underscores Schneider Electric's commitment to leading the industry in secure operations and better protects against cyberthreats. SL2 certification provides more stringent requirements and increased security resiliency than SL1, which was obtained last year. In addition to the new standard, TÜV Rheinland has certified Schneider Electric and the cybersecurity processes used to develop our products, including the NMC3, as ISASecure Secure Development Lifecycle Assurance (SDLA) compliant. The NMC3 is embedded in the majority of Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure IT DCIM products and provides a robust, remotely accessible management application over the network for critical power and cooling infrastructure. "According to the 2024 Allianz Risk Barometer, cyber incidents are ranked as the number one business concern. At an average reported cost of more than $4 million an incident, we understand why cybersecurity tops the priority list for CIOs," said Kevin Brown, SVP for EcoStruxure IT, Data Centre Business, Schneider Electric. "With the IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 and ISASecure SDLA cybersecurity certifications, Schneider Electric is leading the industry with this dual certification helping to reduce risks to critical infrastructure." Simplifying the process of installing firmware Companies are challenged to keep up with firmware updates. Many enterprise customers manage their critical power and cooling infrastructure with their own in-house management tools, third-party network management tools, or building management systems. These systems don't know when the firmware at your connected endpoints - particularly in distributed and edge environments - requires an update. The EcoStruxure IT Secure NMC System offers improved embedded firmware management thanks to a new dedicated tool. The Secure NMC System Tool transforms the cumbersome process of researching and installing the latest firmware on all devices, making the process up to 90% faster. Users no longer need to search for firmware on an ad hoc basis, check to see if that firmware is the latest one for your device, and read the release notes to understand what's included in the new version before they download it and update their device. Instead, the Secure NMC System Tool notifies customers that new firmware is available and directs them to install the new version. The benefits of the Secure NMC System include: 1. Eliminate fear of becoming outdated: Simplifies firmware management, making it up to 90% faster and reducing risk. 2. Achieve consistent compliance: Customers have a systematic, standardised approach to cybersecurity updates for their critical power and cooling infrastructure...

For ravers from a certain era, Matt Nelson, or Slipmatt, is a legendary name. As one half of SL2 along partner Lime, he was responsible for creating a handful of the most iconic tunes from the early days of British rave culture - most notably ‘On A ragga Tip' which reached number 2 in the mainstream charts in 1992.In more recent times, however, he has become that rarest of entities - a recognisable name from the scene who has spoken out publicly about the tyrannical and dangerous road down which humanity is headed - if we continue to allow it.Inevitably we begin this chat with a bit of DJ banter, before getting down to what it was that awakened Slipmatt to the fact that all was not well in the world. We also cover the question of just why it is that so few public names - in particular those we have been entrained to think of as “rebels” - have had anything meaningful to say at a time in human history where their input has been needed more than ever.Slipmatt's official website is at: https://www.slipmatt.net/

For this, the 68th episode of the World's Number One Open Source Film Photography Podcast, the gang invited our friend and film photographer Johnny Martyr to share with us his love of Leicas.  As is the case any time the topic of cameras made by everyone's favorite Wetzlar based company is mentioned, the Force™ beckons our own resident Leica Master, Dan Tamarkin, who also joins us on our first ever April Fool's Day episode! What is real and what is fake?!  Are Johnny and Dan really here or did Mike just find a really convincing AI voice generator?!  NO ONE KNOWS! Helping Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike differentiate between reality and imagination, are returning callers Bob Rotoloni, Mark Faulkner, Patrick Casey, Raymond Nason, and first time callers Alan Peres, and Brock's Garage! Starting off the episode, Johnny talks a bit about his business, shooting film and digital with his wife and what kinds of customers would hire a film photographer.  Of all the reasons someone might want a professional photographer, there is one type of gig that people tend to favor film more, but what is it?  Johnny also talks about how when he first got started, his customers struggled to differentiate his film shots from his wife's digital shots, so he sought out ways to come up with his own style. For the second episode in a row, Leica R SLRs have captivated the Camerosity Crew, and Paul, Mike, and Dan discuss all of Leicas different SLRs, and what they like about each one.  Mike recently shot three different Leica SLRs and clearly loved one over the others, but which one was it? Have you ever struggled loading film into bottom loading Leica screw mount (and similar) cameras?  Does trimming the leader to the necessary length cause you heartache and slow you down too much?  If so, Johnny has found a new type of take up spool that works in most screw mount Leicas (and copies) that greatly simplifies loading film into these cameras without having to trim the leader.  Enter Ausgeknipst, a small German company who 3D printed a new design that both Johnny and Mike have tested. Finally, Mike shares his thoughts on a camera he thought would make a good April Fool's Discussion because of how well it "fooled" the community upon its release, but strangely, he ended up liking it way more than he thought he would.  But what was it? As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, rather than discuss a certain brand or type of camera, we thought it would be fun to discuss an entire decade worth of cameras, and what better decade to start in, but the 1970s!  Get out your hair picks, put on your bell bottoms, and spin up some Kiss records and call in to share with us your favorite 1970s cameras! We will record Episode 69 on Monday, April 15th at 7pm Central Daylight Time (-5 UTC), 8pm Eastern Daylight Time (-4 UTC), and Tuesday at 10am Australian Eastern Standard Time (+10 UTC). We look forward to hearing from you! In This Episode Johnny uses a converted 1930 Leica Model C converted to a III / Mostly uses the Leica M6 TTLs for most shooting in low light Shooting the Leica M6 With and Without a Meter / Paul does not like the Leica M3 Johnny and Mike met over a Konica III article, while he got noticed on a humorous M6 article People should shoot their own way and not try and impose on others Dan subscribes to Johnny's blog / Dan and a few others do not like the M3 viewfinder Paul prefers the M6 over the M6 TTL as it has more diodes Johnny also shoots with a Nikon FM2n and F2SB, but does not like the F3 / Anthony loves his FM2n Johnny had a shoot with Bill Clinton while he was working hybrid Clients don't really care if shooting film or not, they like the photos There is a market for film shooters / Mark had hired Johnny for his wedding Johnny moved to black and white to distinguish from digital / The has been more interest in film at weddings Dan has seen more people wanting to get in film / Most people won't know a Leica from a ratty old camera Wedding photographers get nervous seeing a Leica shooter Anthony wishes Johnny had shot his wedding / Theo's wedding photographer ran out of film Alan brought his Leica IIIf to Dan to have it CLA'd The Leica R virus has spread through the Camerosity hosts / Dan rarely sells R cameras but the lenses are in demand Dan caused Paul to buy 2 M10s / The M10 might be the last great Leica Paul tested the 7Artisans lens and it surprised him in quality People should like lenses because of their “flavor” / Each of the older Leica lenses is unique Paul suggests the Leica SL2 is a good starter in the SLR range Mike has fallen in love with the SL2 in 5 hours, didn't take to the R8 Theo though thinks the R8 is his favourite SLR he shoots Dan thinks the R8 is ungainly, the R3 is good for pounding nails The R6.2 is the pinnacle of the R series / Paul got a great haul of R equipment Some people wanted the Camerosity shirts off Mike and Paul's back! Johnny and Mike Promote New 3D Printed Quick Load Spools for Bottom Loading Leicas Simple accessories can make using vintage cameras much easier Both Paul and Mike missed a rare Argus lens at the camera show Was the Yashica Y35 an April Fools Joke? / Yashica name is being used with I'm Back micro 4/3 camera We don't appreciate sometimes the technology and effort to bring a product to market Mint is doing some cool work / The panel goes 110 crazy Links The Camerosity Podcast is now on Discord! Wow what an episode. So many talking points on and off the pitch. We start with a wrap up of the SLGR round then get straight into it with #GoalPostGate where we see Greg get heated up for the first time! Must listen! Let's face it. Greek fields aren't the best at the best of times so will this move set an ugly precedent that now all clubs will look to exploit? Lazaros signing for Aris and with that doing the rounds with the top Greek clubs. Will he be the only Greek in that team? Some Greek Cup bangers this week! Giakoumakis finally moves to the MLS where he will line his pockets. But is it a good career move? SL2 on hold with broken promises. All questions answered and much more.

We're streaming daily on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pocket Casts, and Spotify! There's nothing wrong with the way the traditional Leica camera worked. If anything, the Leica M series makes the photographer more aware of what's around them. But let's be honest, autofocus is very useful. And the Leica SL2s is probably the camera that answers the needs of the modern journalist the best. At the heart of the Leica SL2s is what Leica claims to be a newly developed 24MP BSI sensor. This variant of the Leica SL2 maintains the IP54 weather sealing rating, but it also received a speed boost. Editor's Note: We've updated this post as of May 2022. A camera that you truly want to carry around with you everywhere Both Panasonic and Leica lenses have comparable autofocus speeds. Raw files are pretty versatile in Lightroom. FANTASTIC high ISO print capability Cons A tad pricey. But when you consider the weather sealing, it's not bad. I wish it did Qi wireless charging. I wish this had dedicated animal face detection There should be an option to never let the display time out. This is especially true for the EVF-Extended mode. It needs the right strap to be comfortable for long photo walks Still no multiple exposure mode I wish the menu was touch-capable and that it either flipped or tilted/pivoted. Gear Used We tested the Leica SL2s with: Leica 35mm f2 Summicron SL Leica 24-90mm f2.8-4 SL Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 Lumix S Pro Panasonic 16-35mm f4 Lumix S Pro Tech Specs A new 24 Megapixel CMOS BSI full-frame sensor. This sensor is image stabilized. 25fps in the electronic shutter mode, and 9fps in mechanical 4GB of internal memory Up to ISO 100,000 96MP Multishot mode 4K 30p/60P video, Cinema 4K video at 30p/60p No 29 minute filming limit Capture One 21 support 5.76 Megapixel EVF IP54 weather sealing rating and you can shoot with it down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit Dual UHS II SD Card slots Top display USB C Ergonomics The Leica SL2s is pretty much identical to the SL2. The big difference is the blacked out Leica logo up top. But otherwise, this camera is very similar to its sibling. It's still milled from a block of aluminum. The front of the Leica SL2s has a few controls. There are two buttons near the lens release that are customizable. Up top there are a few controls. The biggest things are the wonderful diopter control, the LCD screen, the exposure dial, shutter button, and two other buttons. We set these to ISO and white balance. The back of the camera has little going on. It's dominated by a large LCD screen. The left has a play button, function button, and a menu button. The power on/off switch is also located here. On the right there is another button that I set to the view mode. Plus, there's the joystick. And of course, a camera wouldn't be a professional grade camera without dual card slots. And this camera has them. On the other side are other ports and the USB C terminal. Build Quality The Leica SL2s has an IP54 weather sealing rating. According to the web, that means it can take splashes from any direction and resist a bit of dust. Indeed, the Leica SL2s is one of the toughest and most rugged cameras on the market. I'd argue that it's the most rugged for a photojournalist. Its predecessor quite literally saved the life of an Italian journalist. The build quality of the Leica SL2s has strengthened my beliefs in better cameras. And quite honestly, the next camera I purchase needs ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EAGxBoston: Updates and Info from the Organizing Team, published by Kaleem on March 11, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TLDR: All you need to know about EAGxBoston - It's going to be awesome ! Also: If you would like to nominate a friend or colleague to present at EAGxBoston, or have presented at an EAG(x) before and would like to do so at EAGxBoston, please email us at boston@eaglobalx.org (edit: the email address above only got corrected at 1pm EST on the 11th of March - if you were trying to email us before that, we apologize and kindly ask you to resend your email to the corrected address) Intro EAGxBoston will be taking place from 6pm on Friday the 1st of April until 8pm on Sunday the 3rd of April. We're very excited about how big, exciting, and high quality this conference is shaping up to be—we are prepared to welcome up to 1,000 attendees and it's looking possible that we'll actually be doing that. If this is your first time attending an EA conference (or even if you have attended one before but perhaps didn't take preparation seriously) we suggest reading these excellent posts about how to get ready for an EA conference. We're also still eager to expand our team of pre-event and on-the-day volunteers (it'll be fun and impactful) ! There are lots of other ways to engage with other attendees before the event: there is an #eagxboston-2022 channel on the Groups Slack, there is this WhatsApp group, there are EA Facebook pages, and the Swapcard app (launching soon!). The applications for EAGxBoston close on the 21st of March. Dates and times In case you missed this somehow, the conference is happening from the 1st to 3rd of April 2022. We hope to make the detailed schedule of sessions at the conference available soon, through the Swapcard app. In the meantime, we can tell you generally that there will be an opening reception and career fair/internship fair/academic program fair from 6-9pm on the 1st of April, and that the conference will be open from 8am-8pm on the 2nd and 3rd, but we will try to have the majority of programming fall between 10am and 6pm. Location The conference will be happening at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) located at 415 Summer St, Boston, MA 02210, in Boston's Seaport District. There are multiple ways to get to the venue: You can use the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority)'s Red Line or Silver Line, or the 4, 7, or 11 bus, depending where you are starting from. If you're using the red line, South Station is the closest station to BCEC (~10min / ~1.1km/ ~0.7mile walk). Broadway station is also close (~12min / ~1.4km / ~0.9mile walk). If you use the silver line, the SL1, SL2, SL3, and SLW all stop right next to BCEC. Venue info If you've looked at BCEC online or via maps, you'd have noticed that it's basically the size of a small airport. We will be using the entirety of one side of the second floor—that is to say, we have loads of space. In addition to the massive amount of meeting (and eating) space, you can also walk around the rest of the interior of BCEC, or around its exterior perimeter. What there'll be in the venue Coat check Quiet space 2 large one-on-one spaces with >100 2-person tables General session space Dining space for ~800 people at a time 7 ~60 person workshop/meeting spaces First aid Security at the entrances What we recommend you bring with you Refillable water bottle Rain jacket/umbrella Laptop/notebook Laptop and phone chargers Things to help you de-stress or relax during off time, such as a book or headphones or an eye mask if you want to take a nap Necessary medications Covid policy We will not mandate the wearing of masks. However, we encourage people to think seriously about their decision to wear/not wear one with respect to other attendees' safety. We will have ~1,000 KN95 m...

027: Slipmatt. Slipmatt is a hero of the hardcore scene and is quite rightly known as the Godfather Of Rave. Fascinated with playing vinyl on his parents’ record player before he could even walk, the young Matt Nelson quickly developed a thirst for soul music that lead him to start buying imported records from an extremely young age. Inspired by a DJ in a local Essex nightclub, Slipmatt was perfectly placed for the rave explosion that soon followed and played at every legendary event that took place during that time. Also having enjoyed chart success as one half of SL2 as well as helping run a pirate radio station back in the day, Slipmatt’s story is a fascinating journey through the scene that brings us right up to now where he still rocks dancefloors with his unmatched technical ability behind the decks.FOLLOW US Instagram: @houseculturenetSpotify: HouseCulture - Perfect PlaylistOnline: www.houseculture.net|| Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseculture. Leading like Jesus requires us to vary our leadership style. Our ego can get in the way of healthy leadership and in the way of leading like Jesus.Ken defines EGO as “Edging God Out.” When we surrender to God we can turn our EGO into “Exalting God Only.”To find out more about Ken Blanchard, go to www.kenblanchard.com and www.leadlikejesus.com.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Ken Blanchard:www.kenblanchard.comwww.leadlikejesus.comBooks mentioned:Lead Like Jesus, by Ken BlanchardLeading at a Higher Level, by Ken BlanchardThe One-Minute Manager, by Ken BlanchardManagement of Organizational Behavior, by Ken BlanchardEpisodes mentioned:Episode 65: Why Don't People Go to Church Anymore?Episode 66: The Improbably Growth of the Early ChurchEpisode 67: How the Church Lost Its Missionary Identity— Links to Amazon are affiliate links.

Annie Lennox's debut solo album and one that neither of us really knew much about apart from the big singles. And to be honest we remember not thinking much of those at the time as well but that was nearly 30 years ago so perhaps we are being too harsh and a new listen will prove teenage us wrong. We also have brief chats about Curtis Stigers, ZZ Top and SL2, all included on this episode's Spotify playlist alongside the full 'Diva' album and a couple of other bits that we mention this week. In this episode, I will be chatting with my former bandmate & Rhythm Quest co-founder Mark Hadfield. Our musical adventure started way back in our school days, playing around in the eight-track studio and trying to recreate the sounds that we were hearing played on evening radio dance shows such as Stu Alan on Key 103 and Pete Tong on Radio 1. Never in our wildest dreams would we have known that those DJ's and shows would be instrumental in bringing our first track as Rhythm Quest "closer to all your dreams" to the masses. In 1989 on a school 'music lesson' field trip, we were taken to visit a local Recording Studio by the name of Moonraker studios. This was a place renowned for local dance acts such as A Guy called Gerald and many others. After leaving school, Mark blagged his way into becoming a 'Studio Teaboy' before eventually being offered a position as a YTS trainee. This gave us access to the studio overnight where we spent all of our free time trying to concoct new ideas in our Quest for dancefloor success. This is where we created our seminal club banger 'Closer to all your dreams' that we signed to Network records, home to acts such as Detroit Techno Legends Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson & also masked ravers Altern-8. During that era, it was also not just at the height of the 'Madchester' scene, but the whole Rave scene sweeping across the UK.It led to Rhythm Quest playing to Huge crowds throughout the country, sharing the stage with acts such as The Prodigy, SL2& Shades of Rhythm. Some of the most memorable moments being in Scotland and Northern Ireland, Those crazy Kids!!!Following on from Rhythm Quest, Mark's music career progressed as 1/3 member of Vocal House outfit & Remix Poster Boys - LOVELAND Their debut release ‘Let The Music Lift You Up’ hit the Top 20 in the UK charts and winning the Silver Clef award for the 1994 Number 1 Dance Record of the Year They had 4 further UK Hit records including Hacienda favourite - 'I need Somebody’ and ‘Don’t make me wait’This led to them becoming the poster boys of UK House Remixes, working on many artists including Livin’ Joy, D-Ream, C&C Music Factory, D-mob, Barbara Tucker, Donna Summer, Tony de Vit, Shiva, Blast, Happy Clappers, Love Happy, Robert Owens, Atlantic Ocean & Chanelle.New style dance trend Trance saw the birth of LUCID in 1998 and Mark signed with FFRR/London Records. Their first single ‘I Cant Help Myself’ hit the UK charts at no.7 & was nominated for the prestigious Ivor Novello Award. Further hits included ‘Crazy’ ‘Stay with me till dawn’ and “Out There’ all entering the UK Top 40.Further notable success’ worth mentioning are:LOVEFREEKZ signing to Positiva/EMI Records with the UK number 6 hit ‘Shine’ and commercial / pop success as a writer/producer with hit songs such as the multi-platinum, award-winning ‘Let me Love you’ (until you learn to love yourself) recorded by US RnB star Ne-Yo that was a number 1 in the UK & number 6 in the US, ’Bounce’ recorded by Hip Hop artist Iggy Azalea and songs recorded with artists such as Rita Ora and Celine Dion.Join me Derick Karma, as I chat with Mark, remembering our adventures whilst touring Scotland with Rhythm Quest, when we shared the bill with the Legendary Frankie Knuckles at the Tunnel in Glasgow and how we managed to get barred from Manchester's Sunset Radio Station.

Marco has invited back his friend and long-time mirrorless camera reviewer and expert Mathieu Gasquet. Mat and his significant other - Heather - are also the founders of www.MirrorLessons.com / and www.MirrorlessComparison.com. This show is sponsored by: COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC  and Skylum Luminar - The cutting edge photo editor http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3  Marco’s Street Photography exhibition: “Poetry of coincidence” will be shown at ErsteReihe.Hamburg Gallery from November 21st to December 7th. Google Map link: https://goo.gl/maps/PGaP9uhmHibQTURE6    Nikon Z50 Nikon is entering the mirrorless APS-C sensor market with this camera. This camera uses the Z-mount and offers a 21MP CMOS sensor with a 209-point Hybrid AF System. But unlike the Z6 & Z7 it does not have in-body image stabilization. But it’s also smaller and lighter than the Full Frame Z-Siblings while still offering Nikon-like grip and ergonomics. The 90° tilt-up and 180° tilt-down LCD is unique but may interfere with tripods if you want to use the LCD as a selfie screen.   Nikon Z50 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2reW1Xv  Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/35iefpW  Olympus E-M5 III The new E-M5 III shares a lot of features of the E-M1 MK II. It has a 20MP m4/3 sensor with a 121-point phase and CDAF and a 50MP high-res mode as well as 30 fps burst and 10fps with continuous AF shooting modes. On the video side it shoots 4K up to 24p and Full HD up to 60p is supported. The EVF now moved from an LCD to an OLED system which should improve the viewing experience. And Olympus continues to make their cameras more weatherproof - a feature that I have started to appreciate - when it works - in recent months. The E-M5 MK III is now IPX-1 rated. Bluetooth has also been added for better connectivity with your mobile devices.   Olympus E-M5 III B&H: https://bhpho.to/2Xzrfol    Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2XxmnjB   Sony a9 II After 2.5 years in production, Sony’s flagship sports camera gets a refined update. While the sensor and amount of AF pixel stayed the same, the new processor improves overall responsiveness and AF tracking reliability. The mechanical shutter can now shoot 10 fps. A second UHS-II SD card slot also improves the ability to offload the images fast to SD-cards. But the upgrade from 100 Mbit to a built-in Gigabit Ethernet port plus implementation of 5GHz ac Wi-Fi also helps to offload the images quickly to the photo agencies.   Sony a9 II B&H: https://bhpho.to/34cqILW     Leica SL2 Leica announced an update to their Full Frame SL camera line. The camera has a 47MP FF CMOS sensor with CDAF and now finally a 5-axis IBIS is built-in. A 187MP high res mode enables the user to create huge high-quality prints. And a 5.76M-dot OLED EVF is also a useful improvement. The camera allows for 10 fps burst shooting with mechanical shutter and locked AF which drops to 6fps in continuous AF mode. And pretty much all of these are the specs of the Panasonic Lumix S1R, too. But the Leica does have a different body design and it has a beautiful top plate LCD as well as 2 SD-card slots instead of the 1 SD and 1 XQD slot on the S1 and S1R. What’s lacking on the Leica is a tilting LCD screen. At launch, the SL2 is priced at $6000 US and is about twice the price of the Lumix S1R.   Leica SL II B&H: https://bhpho.to/2KDRAg3    Panasonic Lumix S1R B&H: https://bhpho.to/2IoT9zJ Mirrorless question of the month: Hello Marco, I have my Olympus EM-10 for 3 years now. Time to upgrade? Not so sure, I'm wondering if I rather keep it until I will start to see mechanical or electronic issues? The new EM-10 and 5 mark III are more capable (better image stabilization, more pixels, better Continuous autofocus...) but I still enjoy my ''old'' camera and knows its limitations. I think I would rather invest the money in lenses, travels or workshops, no? What do you think? And much as sustainability and green issues are the trending topics these days, SL2 was set up with nothing but a dream by Veerappan Swaminathan back in 2010. He paid himself little and stayed the course. Last year, it posted a revenue of just under S$1 million on the back of projects involving high-profile clients such as Japan’s leading packaging company Nippon Closures and various government agencies. The firm has now expanded its operations to Indonesia and India where it’s spreading its message of sustainable solutions, community building and social enterprise. So how does one turn their back on a good salaried job and embark on the unknown because they believe in it? We find out from founder and director of Sustainable Living Lab, Veerapan Swaminathan.

Genome-Wide Assessment of AU-Rich Elements by the AREScore Algorithm

In mammalian cells, AU-rich elements (AREs) are well known regulatory sequences located in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of many short-lived mRNAs. AREs cause mRNAs to be degraded rapidly and thereby suppress gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Based on the number of AUUUA pentamers, their proximity, and surrounding AU-rich regions, we generated an algorithm termed AREScore that identifies AREs and provides a numerical assessment of their strength. By analyzing the AREScore distribution in the transcriptomes of 14 metazoan species, we provide evidence that AREs were selected for in several vertebrates and Drosophila melanogaster. We then measured mRNA expression levels genome-wide to address the importance of AREs in SL2 cells derived from D. melanogaster hemocytes. Tis11, a zinc finger RNA-binding protein homologous to mammalian tristetraprolin, was found to target ARE-containing reporter mRNAs for rapid degradation in SL2 cells. Drosophila mRNAs whose expression is elevated upon knock down of Tis11 were found to have higher AREScores. Moreover high AREScores correlate with reduced mRNA expression levels on a genome-wide scale. The precise measurement of degradation rates for 26 Drosophila mRNAs revealed that the AREScore is a very good predictor of short-lived mRNAs. Taken together, this study introduces AREScore as a simple tool to identify ARE-containing mRNAs and provides compelling evidence that AREs are widespread regulatory elements in Drosophila.
