IMPRINTS - Reinforced Records (1990-1996) - d mix & Evolve Reinforced Records. Inspired by a night in the Jazz Cafe recently with 4 Hero, Fabio and Grooverider amongst others. I thought it was time to jump into a truly foundational label. One of the first i collected actually! Founded in ‘89 by Marc Mac and Gus Lawrence then joined by Dennis McFarlane. Most of the early releases were combinations of the founders themselves, 4Hero, Manix and Tek 9. Moving towards late ‘92/'93 the label was at the forefront of the darker side of the music. Looking at Goldie with Rufige, the continued work of Doc Scott and Nasty Habits, and not forgetting 4Hero and the techier sample led sound of theirs. You also have to mention the Enforcers Series that was so popular and are still so sought after! I've decided to focus on the earlier music from Reinforced, finishing up just about where the ‘2nd Phase' started. I'll take you right up to ‘96. I'll dedicate a final section to one of my favourite producers, Nookie. Who took the Reinforced energy and added that musicality he's so well known for. Before that is a mix of other artists that shaped the sound of this label. From the craziness of Nick OD, the drums of Ray Keith, the pianos of Manix, the edge of Rider to ruffness of Rufige and the drums of Manix, the feel of Manix, basically Manix… stop saying Manix… Manix. Speaking of M***x, I've included three tracks in the mix from one of my favourite EPs of all time. Tune for tune a winner… the EP is Called ‘Oblivion (Head in the Clouds)'. Find me a better track for track EP… I'll wait… Expect to hear everything from Rivet1201 all the way through to RIVET1293, I've had a lot of fun pulling out my favourites from this weighty back catalogue, I really hope you enjoy it. True House Stories Podcast with special guests by Lenny Fontana
Paul Ibiza is the man responsible for bringing the world the legendary records label Ibiza Records, he is the promoter that organized cutting edge events Fantastic Ibiza, Jungle Splash and MC Convention to name but a few. More recently Paul aka Digital Niyabinghi has been producing “Jungle Dub” and taking his Digital Niyabinghi Sound System on tour. Although Paul could be labelled as a Producer, Promoter, DJ, Label owner, Paul simply describes himself as an entrepreneur within the music industry. Paul got started in the rave business in 1988 around the time of events such as Sunrise and Genesis were putting on raves in fields and warehouse in the London region. Although Paul actually got started in 1988 his journey started way before in the early 80's in the days of Soul II Soul and Paul Anderson among other house and warehouse parties which is where Paul was first influenced by the Reggae and Soul played at these parties then known as or “Blues” or “Shebeens” (Shebeen being the Irish term for an illicit bar or club where excisable alcoholic beverages were sold without a licence). In 1989 Paul was involved in organising the ‘Freedom to Party' rally in Trafalgar Square which aimed to relax licensing laws in order to allow nightclubs to stay open longer. Paul then started promoting the ‘Fantastic Ibiza' raves in Goods Way, Kings Cross with DJ's such as Carl Cox, Colin Dale, Kenny Ken, Grooverider. Many of these weekend long parties were attended by upwards of 3000 people and did not always have an entry fee but rather the money was made by donations and drinks sales. After the Police attention was getting excessive due to overcrowding both inside and outside the venue in Kings Cross, Ibiza records was born in 1989 after Paul went to the Balearic Island of Ibiza and ended up breaking his leg. While Paul was immobile he started learningPaul Ibiza how to produce music using Cubase on the first Ataricomputers capable of sequencing music along with an Akai S950 sampler and Spirit mixing desk. Soon Ibiza Records would set up their offices and studio in Hornsey, North London. When Ibiza records first begun they were making Techno, Hardcore and House types of music, coupled with Dub & Reggae influences the music now known as Jungle emerged which Ibiza Records was championing along with labels and artists such as Shut up and Dance, Rebel MC, Reel 2 Reel and a Guy Called Gerald. Ibiza Records went on to establish a number of successful spin off labels such as Boxbase, Highly Blessed, Hard Plastic, Three Lions, Kemet, 3rd Party, Limited-E. Paul also opened up a record shop ‘Ibiza Records' in Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London in the early 90's. In 1994 Jungle Splash was born and still continues to this day. Paul's vision for Jungle Splash was to showcase the best of Jungle music much like an exhibition for the scene. Jungle Splash has moved from many venues over the years such as The Rocket complex in Holloway, Roller Express, The Mass and is currently held at Jamm in Brixton, London. In 2003 Paul promoted the MC Convention event convention under the ‘Highly Blessed' brand in conjunction with Mc Shabba and Skibadee. The event met with some resistance from some people that thought putting the focus on the MC's as opposed to DJ's was bound to ensure that the event would flop. To the contrary, all tickets to the event at the Stratford Rex sold out and MC Convention toured Birmingham, Cardiff, Southampton and Essex. Paul's latest innovation is the new sound he calls “Jungle Dub” and has been touring with his own Digital Niyabinghi Sound System which goes back to the roots of Jungle and Dub. The Sound System features artists such as Winston Runtingz, Uncle Dugs, Junior Dangerous, Ragga Twins, Potential Bad Boy, Terry T, MC Moose, Beefy and Daddy Nature and of course Paul ‘Digital Niyabinghi' himself.

It's the one and only DJ Storm! Currently in the midst of celebrating 30 years at the forefront of the culture, Jayne Storm takes the time to reflect over her career, explore her strong sense of community and relish in her love for the nerdiest, most intricate details of the DJ craft. From her time on the pirates and her longstanding partnership with the late great Kemistry (RIP) to the ever-changing landscape of the genre via her role and influence on drum & bass institution Metalheadz, Storm goes super deep on this one. Complete with quotes and contributions from other longstanding drum & bass jungle pioneers Marc Mac, Fabio & Grooverider, Loxy and J Majik, this is an interview unlike any other DJ Storm has ever done before. If you're catching this fresh, you can witness Storm's on-going 30 year celebrations at Alchemy on December 23, E1, London as she's joined by some of her nearest, dearest and most influential peers. If you're catching it after that date, don't worry. THE DEEP CONTROL presents ... SRS (U.K.) Music has always been a real passion, even from an early age, listening to the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, and Pink Floyd. He started off perfecting the art of mixing and blending tracks using vinyl and has been doing so on and off since the late eighties. Early Electro and the explosion of the acid house scene, lead him into the realms of the UK rave culture from 1988 – 1993 where he went to some of the biggest outdoor raves in the UK, hosted by the top promoters of the time which were Sunrise, Biology and Fantazia. London's newly opened orbital motorway M25 pathed the way for the acid house raves. He was a regular at the Astoria Night Club, Charing Cross Road in London where Nicky Holloway ran a club night called ‘The Trip.' The Astoria hosted DJ's such as the late great Andrew Weatherall, Carl Cox and the likes of Fabio & Grooverider, Kenny Ken, Ray Keith and DJ Hype. Although He has a varied taste in music, his real love is anything electronic. Deep House, Organic House & Melodic vibes are his forte. SRS has been producing his own tracks now for about 3 years and is currently working on a project under the pseudonym Lakota Rayn, producing Deep House and Organic House music. He would describe his mixes as deep and diverse...which take you on an emotional journey. This week's Resident Advisor Exchange was recorded in January, live from Southbank Centre in London. Shortly before their Royal Festival Hall performance with The Outlook Orchestra, drum & bass and jungle originators Fabio & Grooverider sat down with Heléna Star to talk about the show. As you can hear from the applause and roars of laughter throughout the recording, the audience was besotted. The UK dance music scene would look very different without Fabio & Grooverider's contributions over the last few decades. Coming from pirate radio, where they first teamed up in 1987 on Phase One, the duo would go on to carve out the path for drum & bass and jungle, as well as to influence the trajectories of house, techno and breakbeat. Grooverider captures their legacy best when he says: "We are this music." Launched in 2017, The Outlook Orchestra has collaborated with other pioneering artists like David Rodigan and Mala. The show with Fabio & Grooverider, which they will perform again at Outlook Festival in June, saw 30 years of drum & bass history packed into 31 tracks. In conversation with Heléna Star, Fabio & Grooverider discussed how the show came together, as well as their staying power in the scene, the legacy of their seminal club night Rage, how drum & bass is still growing and how humour is a vital part of their relationship. Fittingly, they also cracked a lot of jokes.

The jungle and drum & bass pioneer—and captivating storyteller—unpacks his life, career and new book. Alongside peers like Fabio, Grooverider, Jumping Jack Frost, Randall, Micky Finn, LTJ Bukem and Nicky Blackmarket, Ray Keith played a leading role as jungle took over London in the mid '90s. His new autobiographical book, Dark Soldier, is a reflection on his life: his personal journey, his career, the highs and lows, and the many people who have influenced him. It's also the story of how he and the scene moved from analogue into electronic music. "I was in the right place at the right time," he said in this week's Resident Advisor Exchange, referring to the many Monday nights spent at Heaven in London, catching sets from the likes of Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold and Paul "Trouble" Anderson. "I was a purist, absorbing the sounds." Keith has put out so many records over the years, under so many different aliases, that he's lost count. He's also had radio shows on Vibe FM, Kiss FM and recently Thames Delta radio, cofounded a booking agency and headed up several record labels. He's a legend in the scene with a wealth of stories to tell. In this week's Exchange, Keith talks about growing up in Colchester, the importance of record stores as a community hub, dubplate culture, how music saved his life and the thrill of watching his daughter, AKA LO Selecta, play her first DJ set. Tracklist: Dark Soldier - Need Me (Forthcoming) Dark Soldier - Newman Elec (Forthcoming)

So, for this month's mix, I wanted to return to one of the first styles I got into as a DJ. Back then, music like this fell under the name of “breakbeat”. This evolved into a much better one: DRUM & BASS. And like many other electronic genres, it has its offshoots. Jungle, Jump-Up, Tech-step, Ragga-Styles, Intelligent, Jazz-step, Atmospheric, Neurofunk, Hard-step, Dark-step, as well as Dubstep. From these we also now have the sultry, jazzy Liquid Funk (lots of beautiful vocals, very dream-like). If you want to check out some DnB artists on your own, look up Goldie, Doc Scott, DJ Rap, Aphrodite, Grooverider, Fabio, and S.P.Y. for starters. Record Labels to seek out: Metalheadz, Propa Talent, Good Lookin', Hospital Records, Moving Shadow, and 31 Records, for some seriously sick tunes. Full track listing on www.daibutsumusic.com

The digital realm is an exciting place. It's not often been a space that we look for a party, however, at least not for the true dancefloor mayhem, floor killers, moves-alleviating sense of the word. But with the broadcast of the previously forgotten but now infamous Borrebissebånd series the virtual space can be just that. And tonight we pick up where we left of last time with the one and only Grooverider. This time from a dusty night in Edinburgh. Tune in and turn up the volume.
2 years on from his debut album we welcome Agzilla to the Metalheadz podcast series with a colossal 4 hour mix of breakbeats celebrating his prominent tastes, influences and current favourites. As a veteran DJ and pioneer of the underground sound in Iceland, Agzilla has remained connected to Metalheadz since his first meeting with Goldie way back in 1991. That relationship and affinity with the label led to the release of the aforementioned debut album in 2019. Entitled 'Cats Can Hear Ultrasound', the 13 track LP covers a diverse range of BPMs and styles, blurring the lines between the rough and the smooth and emerging as an authentic body of music for the years to come.
Groove is in the house and delivered by Grooverider himself. Raymond Bingham, best known as Grooverider, is regarded as one of the originators of the British drum'n'bass sound. Born and bred a South Londoner, Grooverider notched up an incredible twelve years behind the decks, DJ'ing everywhere from dingy illegal warehouse parties to huge outdoor festivals. But his legendary radio shows with longtime companion Fabio (first for Kiss FM and now Radio One FM) helped spread the gospel of drum'n'bass further and further afield. As a resident at seminal London night Rage throughout its four year stint at Heaven, he personally oversaw dance music's evolution from acid house to techno and finally drum'n'bass. Tune in and turn up the volume.

METALHEADZ official photographer EDDIE OTCHERE was one of only a handful of people lucky enough to document the mid '90s jungle scene from the inside. Hired by GOLDIE to photograph his label's now infamous night at the Blue Note in Hoxton in the days before cameraphones, Otchere captured the good, the bad and the ugly of the exploding rave genre as it rapidly evolved into what we now know and love as drum and bass.In this episode, Otchere - who has also snapped some of the most celebrated US rappers including BIGGIE SMALLS and the WU-TANG CLAN - takes ROAR: The '90s Rave Podcast back to those exciting days cutting dubs and smoking joints with GROOVERIDER and co at the legendary Music House on a Friday afternoon, before coming together as a community and dancing all weekend to those same fresh tunes at a manor of sketchy London rave venues, often in the face of antagonism from an institutionally racist and corrupt Metropolitan Police.Otchere's brilliant photographs of the '90s jungle scene feature in a new book, Who Say Reload, by PAUL TERZULLI, which sees top producers discuss their most famous tracks, and is out now on Velocity Press: https://velocitypress.uk/product/who-say-reload-book/ -------** DONATE **Help us fund future episodes by donating to our crowdfunder: www.gofundme.com/f/the90sravepodcast------#jungle #jungletechno #breakbeat #drumandbass #dnb #oldschoolhardcore #oldschool #rave #90smusic #raving #music #techno #happyhardcore #hardcorebreakbeat #housemusic #breakbeat #breakbeathardcore #the90s #1990s #90s #the1990s #acidhouse #hardcoretechno #hardtrance #dj #producer #metalheadz #goldie #grooverider #hiphop #wutangclan #biggiesmalls

Another one from our vault of UK rave heyday tapes. This time it's a double bill featuring an A-side with Grooverider and a B-side with DJ Nipper. Raymond Bingham, best known as Grooverider, is regarded as one of the originators of the British drum'n'bass sound. Born and bred a South Londoner, Grooverrider notched up an incredible twelve years behind the decks, DJ'ing everywhere from dingy illegal warehouse parties to huge outdoor festivals. Followed here by long term trooper DJ Nipper who mixes a fine selection of anthems and provides your stereo with the nostalgic sound of early 90's old skool house music and rave vibes. Tune in and turn up the volume.
Higloo was born and raised in the Midlands UK. From the age of 11 he was listening and mixing electronic music. His passion for electronic music started with Jungle and Hardcore, furiously swapping live mix tapes with friends by DJ's like LTJ Bukem and Fabio and Grooverider. As the Jungle sound progressed into drum n bass, hemoved towards the emerging garage scene, especially the speed garage scene with its stomping 4x4 beats. With this music having strong influences from house producers such as Todd Terry, his teenage curiosity lead him into house music. He had finally found what he had been searching for !! He grew up dancing to the sounds of Harry Romero, CZR etc.. and was lucky enough to live near a club night called Passion which had a number of rooms playing different styles of music but was right at home in the smallest, loudest and bass heavy room called the "Red Room" as a regular from the age of 16 and was lucky enough to hear the sound of Harry Romero's "Tania" making the floor shake as the loyal crowd went crazy to the resident DJ - Nick Corelli who's ability to work the room inspired his dj-ing but more importantly his experiences at that club in that room in the late 90's showed Higloo how to create a groove ! A deep hypnotising groove with class but at the same time knowing that the music has to be fun !! Higloo makes music taking influences from Garage, Disco, Soul, Funk and creating music for the dance floor. His DJ sets stick to the same formula and are never scripted.
Our first podcast of 2021 comes from Mako, a staple of the Metalheadz camp and an artist that has released both a solo album and a collab album (as OneMind) on the label in recent years. For this edition the Bristol-based producer and DJ has dug deep into his crates to deliver a Certificate 18 special, a groundbreaking label founded by Paul Arnold in 1993 that went on to nurture the talents of early pioneering figures such as Photek, Source Direct, Teebee, Klute and more. In Goldie's own words "Certificate 18 isn't really a label, in the same way that Ibiza Records isn't a label, in the same way that Kikman Records isn't a label. It's the very foundation. It's a certain parallax with those labels that sometimes when we're in the dark we need to shine a brighter light on those that have paved the way."
This Tuesdays Mountain Terrace session featured a dig back through the DNB vinyl stash, pulling out some classics from artists like Grooverider, Shy FX, Mayhem, Impulse, Ink, Dylan, Konflict, Matrix, Ed Rush and Optical, Dj Zinc, J Majik, Tali and Ray Keith! Lots of great tunes, lots of great people in the chat. Special shouts to all the regulars and to Dj Brisk and Kill The Noise for passing through. To top it off my entire streaming setup died right at the end and I had no video, awesome! Rounded it out with 7 inches of love with 'that' THPS tune by Goldfinger. Again.
In episode six of The Art of Rave Becky and Fabio & Grooverider cover a wide range of topics, including: the racism that persists in nightclub scenes around the UK; what it was like growing up among soundsystem culture in south London; why dance music (and their careers) owes its existence to pirate radio; their thirteen year residency on Radio One; the resurgence of illegal raves in the era of Covid-19; the early days of RAGE, and how it evolved into the experimental space that birthed jungle; the countries where drum'n'bass is experiencing a revival today, and why the genre continues to endure, always feeling fresh and captivating the underground decade after decade. Each of Becky's guests will be bringing along three records that mean or say something to them, whether that's because they're by an artist that influenced them, remind them of a specific place or time, or feature a beat that changed them. Meanwhile Becky will be bringing along one of their records that defines why she has handpicked them as a guest for the series.Listen to Becky Hill: https://beckyhill.lnk.to/HeavenOnMyMindTW See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
