Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, July 6 Looking for a great place to live? Check out Wheeling! The city made Fortune's “50 best” list…peregrine falcon chicks take flight above Harpers Ferry…and and a solar farm is expected to bring jobs to Raleigh County--#YesWV…on today's daily304. #1 – From FORTUNE – The Northern Panhandle city of Wheeling has been ranked one of the Fortune 50 Best Places to Live for Families. A survey of 1,900 cities across the country ranked the cities on assets like health care, education, and resources for seniors--all of which can help fight isolation and build social ties. This sparsely populated small town on the Ohio River once served as West Virginia's capital during the Civil War, and residents and visitors alike can still enjoy the historic architecture throughout. Most notable is the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, an iconic landmark and symbol of the city: Completed in 1849, Wheeling's was considered the longest suspension bridge worldwide at the time. These days, locals take pleasure in modern comforts such as Oglebay, which features an award-winning golf course, zoo, and adventure park; seasonal activities like skiing and snowboarding; as well as nearby entertainment at the Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino, and Racetrack. Read more: https://fortune.com/well/ranking/best-places-families/2023/wheeling/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – Three peregrine falcon chicks have successfully taken their first flights from the cliffs of Maryland Heights at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia. This is the third consecutive documented fledgling of peregrine falcons since the 1950s from this historic breeding site, according to park biologist Eric Kelley, and is the first time in more than 70 years that each chick has survived to this milestone. Peregrine falcons historically nested at Maryland Heights, but the impacts of the pesticide DDT during the 1940s through the 1960s decimated the population worldwide. It caused eggshell thinning, resulting in the eggshell breaking while being incubated. This resulted in the near extinction of the species. DDT was banned in the U.S. in 1972, and the birds have made an impressive and steady recovery. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars to “The Point” at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers in Lower Town Harpers Ferry — an excellent vantage point from which to see the birds. Representatives with Enel Green Power North America attended a Raleigh County Commission meeting earlier in June to provide an update on the Raleigh Solar Farm project. Raleigh Solar, which has been in the works since 2020, will be developed on approximately 530 acres of farmland east of Interstate 64 in Beaver. Construction is expected to begin in 2024, according to Sam Judd, senior development manager for the Northeast Region of Enel North America Judd said the project represents a $90 million investment in Raleigh County, is expected to provide more than 150 local construction jobs and will produce electricity equivalent to the needs of 16,000 West Virginia households every year. There will be four or five permanent jobs once the site is operational in 2025. Today - the first meeting of the mascot transition committees took place on Nov. 30. They talked about what makes a mascot and the road ahead. It was a joint session with Centennial Middle School and Montrose High School. Tom West, the school board member directly involved with the mascot swaps said that they're going to change the culture. He noted that what they set as a precedent is going to last over 100 years. Finally, we've had a month of uncertainty since election night when Eric Kelley was leading by a razor-thin margin in the District F Montrose County School District race. But a recount has confirmed Kelley's lead — and added one more vote to his total margin of victory. Students have today off from school as Montrose County School District employees receive their COVID-19 vaccinations. The district sent a letter to families notifying them of the school closure after the state announced that 35% of vaccine supplies will be earmarked for school staff. According to the letter vaccine doses will be administered over the next three Fridays. The letter also says that getting educators vaccinated means that they will be better protected from the virus, and it will reduce the number of quarantines necessary. This will reduce interruptions to in-person learning, and help ensure that parents can report to their own workplaces without child care or remote learning demands. Ahead of today's vaccinations, Superintendent Carrie Stephenson discussed the plan during Tuesday's board of education meeting. The district is working in partnership with public health to administer the first round of vaccines. Matt Jenkins, MCDS's public information officer said that they had initially narrowed down the first registration to people who see kids on a routine basis. But upon learning of the availability of more doses, the district opened up the registration to office personnel. There are roughly 1,000 people employed in the district, which includes coaches and club sponsors. Looking strictly at the building staff, there are around 750 people. Board member Eric Kelley asked the question - what's the plan for teachers who decide not to receive the vaccine? Superintendent Stephenson says staff who elect not to get the vaccine for personal or medical reasons will still be required to be quarantined if exposed to the virus. Although staff will be vaccinated over the coming weeks and fully vaccinated in the coming months, the district's COVID-19 mitigation strategies will remain in place for now to keep everyone safe. Gov. Polis said that two weeks after educators' second dose, they no longer have to quarantine if they have COVID exposure Vaccinations for educators is one step closer to a return to normalcy as the district remains committed to welcoming students back to 100% in-person instruction. And finally, before we go we'd like to take a moment to remember the life of James Austin. Jim left this earth with the same bravado that he lived by. As anyone who knew him would agree. Jim was larger than life. Whether you crossed paths with him at KU, where he was student body president, in Montrose where he was city manager, or Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Atlanta, Mexico, Copenhagen or Spain --- you surely remember a man of intelligence, humor and creativity who had a big voice and a bigger heart. Jim did not walk into a room unnoticed ... and if he did, he'd make sure to get your attention. His greatest love was Patty, his soulmate and wife of over 60 years. Jim and Patty were together their entire lives — their “first date” captured in a photo of the two of them sharing a tire swing at age 3. Jim also went through life with an amazing cadre of close friends — too many to mention by name. In addition to Patty, he leaves behind a family who adored him. MENENDEZ CONFIDENT AS JURY DELIBERATIONS REACH THIRD DAY After the second full day of jury deliberations in his bribery trial, Sen. Bob Menendez said Wednesday that he is confident he will be cleared of wrongdoing. "I am convinced we will be exonerated, and that’s worth waiting for,” the New Jersey Democrat said outside the courthouse, according to Talking Points Memo. But if a verdict isn't reached today, Menendez may have to wait even longer. The judge has promised to excuse one juror who has vacation plans, and if an alternate is seated deliberations would need to start from scratch. SLEEP APNEA DIAGNOSED IN 44 NJ TRANSIT ENGINEERS Over the last year, 44 NJ Transit engineers were taken off duty because of sleep apnea, NJ.com reported. MURPHY EXPECTED TO MOVE QUICKLY WHEN HE TAKES OFFICE Gov.-elect Phil Murphy campaigned on strengthening the state's economy and he is expected to act swiftly when he takes the oath of office in mid-January, John Reitmeyer writes for NJ Spotlight. With a bigger Democratic majority in the Legislature, there may be few roadblocks for a $15-an-hour minimum wage and a higher income tax rate on earnings over $1 million. MARIJUANA CALLED BIG WINNER IN 2017 ELECTION The election of Democratic governors in New Jersey and Virginia and the success of ballot measures in a number of states on Tuesday will have an impact on efforts to legalize marijuana, Forbes writes. On election night in New Jersey, Gov.-elect Phil Murphy said: "The criminalization of marijuana has only served to clog our courts and cloud people’s futures, so we will legalize marijuana. And while there are financial benefits, this is overwhelmingly about doing what is right and just.” CONVICTIONS OVERTURNED, 2 FREED AFTER 24 YEARS BEHIND BARS Two Paterson men whose murder convictions were recently overturned walked out of the Passaic County Jail on Wednesday after 24 years of incarceration, The Record reports.
