A myth-busting interview: Cloud seeding with Chief Meteorologist Kenny Miller. Would you feel comfortable renting someone's personal vehicle? I share my Turo experience, and how livestock producers are rocking music to fight off wolves Season 5, Episode 250 Interview With Meteorologist Kenny Miller: The Truth About Cloud Seeding & Cloud Modifications We've heard people blame cloud seeding for everything from droughts to flooding via social media. Now it was time to break down Cloud Seeding: What Is It, and What Does It Do? First, What Is Cloud Seeding, Really? Meet KX News Chief Meteorologist Kenny Miller, who explained cloud seeding as a weather modification method that encourages rainfall or can reduce hail size by introducing silver iodide into storm clouds. The thought process is to help increase moisture to avoid drought by squeezing just a little bit more rain from smaller rain cloud systems. North Dakota Cloud Modification Project Cloud Seeding or Could Modification began in North Dakota in 1962, and is considered the longest running project in the United States. According to Miller, injecting the clouds in a drought scenario has the possibility of taking a 1" rainfall total to 1.10" or in a hail threat situation a 2" hail stone could be reduced to a 1" size for example. Clouds either rain or they don't—seeding just improves efficiency. Myth: It causes droughts. → False. There's no evidence linking seeding to large-scale climate effects. Myth: It's some secret government program. → Also false. It's publicly funded and reported in local communities. Why Turo Made Me Ditch the Traditional Rental Car Hassle Let's be honest—traditional rental car agencies feel like mini DMVs. You land after a long flight, stand in line for 45 minutes, only to find out they “ran out of mid-size cars.” Sound familiar? Transparent Pricing, No Games No counter. No clipboard. No upcharges for floor mats. Turo.com Unlike big agencies, there were no surprise fuel policies, upgrade pitches, or fees for returning early. I chose the exact car I wanted, paid upfront, and had the option for full insurance through the app. Stress-free and cheaper. **REMEMBER: ALWAYS check with your own Auto Insurance Policy Agent as to what your coverage is when it comes to renting ANY vehicles. In my most recent Turo.com rental experience, the All-Star Host delivered said vehicle On-Time and made Drop-Off super easy!! The vehicle owner even gave our party a free ride to the airport that saves us another $20+ Uber ride! My Review on Turo.com: Rebecca W. • August 7, 2025 Awesome!! Clean, on-time. Dropped off the car off with easy meet up directions at the casino we were staying. AND then met us at the end of our rental, offering to drive us to the airport!!! Will absolutely rent from again! AC/DC Blasts Away Wolf Attacks on U.S. Cattle Ranches & Farms In an unexpected twist, American cattle ranchers and farmers are using music from rock legends AC/DC to protect their herds from gray wolf attacks. Since the reintroduction of gray wolves in 1995, their populations have thrived, but their return has also led to a rise in cattle deaths across several states. To combat this, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been using drones equipped with speakers to play AC/DC hits like “Thunderstruck” and “Blue on Black,” alongside movie clips to drive wolves away from livestock. The drones are fitted with heat-seeking cameras to track wolves at night, and the loud sounds effectively disperse the predators. The technique has proven successful, reducing attacks in areas like southwestern Oregon, where wolf attacks dropped from nearly one every other night to less than one a month. Despite these efforts, however, wolf attacks on livestock continue, with dozens of cattle killed in states like California, Washington, and Colorado like we just mentioned. In California, 27 calves were killed in just two months earlier this year, costing ranchers millions of dollars in lost livestock and state reimbursements. Livestock producers are increasingly concerned that their livelihoods are under threat, especially as federal protections for wolves remain in place, limiting the ability to control their numbers. As a result, some lawmakers are pushing to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list, giving states more authority to manage wolf populations and protect agriculture. With the stakes higher than ever, farmers and ranchers are calling for real solutions that protect their herds and their way of life. After all, protecting livestock is not just about economics—it's about ensuring the survival of a centuries-old way of life that feeds and sustains communities across the nation. Reference: https://ca.news.yahoo.com/hells-bells-america-cattle-farms-183321858.html Colorado Plans to Kill Additional Wolf After Cattle Deaths We've been following stories of how landowners and livestock producers are being impacted by the ever increasing wolf pack relocations and reintroductions in some areas of the country. According to CPR News, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is set to kill at least one more wolf from the Copper Creek Pack in Pitkin County after a calf was killed by the pack near Aspen in July. This follows a string of attacks on livestock, including eight confirmed kills in the area since the pack's relocation last winter. Wildlife officials confirmed the calf's death as a wolf kill on July 18, noting evidence that wolves had injured the animal before it died. Despite several attempts to locate the wolves, CPW staff have faced challenges due to difficult terrain. The decision to kill another wolf is part of ongoing efforts to manage the Copper Creek Pack, which was reintroduced into Colorado in late 2023. This pack has been problematic, causing continued damage to local ranchers despite the agency's attempts to manage them, including removing a young male wolf in May. Ranchers like Tom Harrington say the only solution may be relocating or lethally removing the entire pack. Hey Fashion Besties – it's time to kick off pre-fall in style!
Colorado Outdoors - the Podcast for Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Colorado Parks and Wildlife now has the authority to study and conserve the state's native invertebrates and rare plants in a comprehensive manner, which has strengthened Colorado's ability to protect biodiversity. In 2024, Colorado passed House Bill 24-1117 which placed the management of invertebrates and rare plants under CPW's wildlife umbrella. The bill defined rare plants to mean a plant species that is indigenous to the State of Colorado and that is at risk of extinction or elimination across the entirety of their distribution due to restricted range, few populations or occurrences, steep declines or severe threats. In the second part of our two-part series on this topic, we transition to talking about these rare plants. There are more than 2,800 native plants in Colorado, and 125 of those are endemic to our state, which means they only are found here. Of those, 90 are classified as rare.As Colorado updates its State Wildlife Action Plan, 195 rare plants are included in that plan.In this episode, we are going to chat with CPW Natural Areas Program Manager Raquel Wertsbaugh about her program's longstanding work with rare and native plants, while we also talk with Savanna Smith, CPW's new Rare Plants Program Manager, to learn more about CPW's work in this field. You'll hear the great lengths they go to for monitoring these plants, learn what makes some species such as the Rocky Mountain monkeyflower and Pagosa skyrocket so special, and get some information on what you can do to promote the health of rare plants in our state.
The Center for Photography at Woodstock calls Larry Fink (1941-2023) "one of the last great humanist photographers." CPW has organized an exhibition of Fink's photographs, which depict his immersion in New York's Beat scene, the Civil Rights movement, and Manhattan nightlife. "Larry Fink: Sensual Empathy," is on view at CPW in Kingston, New York through August 31. Curator Lucy Sante and CPW executive director Brian Wallis discuss the show and the importance of Fink's photographs.
In this episode, Cory Gaines of the Colorado Accountability Project joins Rachel to talk about another activist attempt aimed at CPW and, it's hard to believe, I know, we get a bit into the weeds on politics, rural Colorado, and ag.This episode is brought to you by Adam Rose at Illiff Custom Cabinetry. In 2024, Colorado passed House Bill 24-1117 which placed the management of invertebrates and rare plants under CPW's wildlife umbrella. In the next two episodes, we are going to dive more into CPW's management of invertebrates and rare plants by talking with the experts now on CPW's team to make sure the state has a cohesive plan to manage our ecosystems. While Colorado may have been behind some other states when it comes to legislative authority over invertebrates and rare plants, CPW is running fast and looking to be a leader in that space. But it's a really big job.Previously, CPW managed 960 wildlife species. In Colorado, there are roughly 1,000 different native bee species alone, and that's just one aspect of the invertebrate and pollinator community. Of those bees, we have 25 different bumblebee species, with 20% of those currently under federal consideration for listing under the Endangered Species Act.In this episode, we are going to start by talking about our invertebrates. But that is such a broad topic, we've decided to home in on bee species as we chat with Invertebrate and Rare Plant Program Manager Hayley Schroeder and Pollinator Program Conservation Manager Adrian Carper. It's time to pollinate your mind and learn why you should care about the state's bee populations and what makes some of these so unique. Soon, you'll know they are every bit as charismatic as many of the state's famed wildlife species.
Sam is joined this week by two of our own Colorado Resident Hunters; Tim Berges and John Kesler to talk about some of the current hunting and conservation issues Colorado is facing right now. There is a lot to unpack on this subject and in this episode, specifically 2025 hunting season expectations and game numbers, upcoming 2028 draw changes and what to do with your accrued points between now and then, the "Stop the Wolf" project to end the wolf reintroduction, and much more. The guys also discuss a new measure; "Initiative 98" coming to light in Colorado, that if gained traction could have a bigger impact on hunting in Colorado than Proposition 127 EVER would have. It doesn't matter where you live or where you hunt, you need to listen to what these guys have to say and pay attention to what is happening on the conservation battlefield right now. Texas is turning to helicopters to manage invasive aoudad sheep, what's behind a surge in moose attacks in Colorado, and one youth figured out how to turn biodegradable fishing lures into a business plus how Gen Z are taking Adulting classes. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 242 Aerial Hunting, Moose Dangers, Life Lessons, and a Teen's Green Fishing Breakthrough Texas Takes to the Skies to Manage Invasive Aoudad Texas is stepping up its wildlife management game — from the sky. Starting September 1, hunters will be allowed to shoot aoudad, also known as Barbary sheep, from helicopters, thanks to Senate Bill 1245, signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott. Originally from North Africa, aoudad were brought to Texas in the 1950s and have since exploded in number — with over 30,000 now roaming the state. They're hardy, fast-breeding, and tough on the environment, competing with native species like mule deer and bighorn sheep, damaging fragile desert ecosystems, and even spreading disease to commercial herds. The bill adds aoudad to the state's aerial wildlife management program, which already includes feral hogs and coyotes. Officials hope helicopter hunting — a method that helped reduce hog numbers by over 30% — can also bring the aoudad population under control. While they're a problem for landowners and wildlife managers, aoudad remain a popular big game target for hunters. Texas has no closed season or bag limit for them — just bring a valid hunting license and be ready for a challenge, whether on foot or from above. Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/hunting/texas-hunting-aoudad-from-helicopters/ Colorado Officials Warn: Give Moose Space During Calving Season Moose attacks are on the rise across Colorado, and wildlife officials say the reason is simple — it's calving season. From late May to mid-June, cow moose become highly protective of their young and more likely to charge if they feel threatened, especially by dogs. In just over a week, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) responded to four separate attacks involving mother moose and nearby people or pets. In one case, a cow moose trampled two dogs and forced a man to dive under a car. In another, two women were charged and stomped while walking off-leash dogs — they only escaped by climbing onto a roof, and a neighbor used a fire extinguisher to drive the moose off. Even leashed dogs don't guarantee safety. In Grand County, Colorado, a woman was seriously hurt when a cow moose charged her and her dog; her boyfriend shot the moose in self-defense. Wildlife officers later had to euthanize the orphaned calf, fearing it would become too dependent on humans. In the most recent incident, a woman in Steamboat Springs was attacked while walking her dogs. A bystander tried to help — and got kicked for his trouble. The injured woman was airlifted to the hospital, and the cow and its two calves were later relocated. CPW says moose see dogs as predators and react aggressively to protect their calves. They're urging outdoor enthusiasts to keep pets leashed, avoid thick brush where calves may be hiding, and give moose a wide berth if spotted. While moose attacks remain rare, growing moose and human populations mean encounters are becoming more likely. So if you're hiking in moose country this time of year, stay alert, leash your dog, and let these massive mammals raise their young in peace. Forget it. High schoolers and college students across the U.S. are now signing up for “Adulting 101” — crash courses in how to do laundry, budget for rent, or cook something besides ramen.New York teen Zack Leitner put it this way: “Until the 1960s, students learned how to cook, clean, and sew. In 2025, we're lucky if they know how to do their laundry.” Psychologist Jean Twenge points to overprotective parenting and a trend of young adults living longer at home. She says today's 20-somethings are arriving at adulthood with empty toolboxes — not because they're lazy, but because no one taught them the basics. So while schools are starting to step in, experts say these basic life skills should be taught way earlier. Because whether it's interest rates or ironing a shirt — ignorance isn't bliss. It's expensive…. Lastly, if you have a chance - research Financial Literacy, it is a topic more should be talking about in our opinion! Ethan Albright, a senior at Hempfield High School and lifelong fisherman, created the lures using natural ingredients like seaweed-based sodium alginate, gelatin, and cornstarch. His goal? Cut down on plastic waste in rivers. Albright's eco-conscious invention earned him third place at the International Science and Engineering Fair this May, after first winning a local competition in March. And yes — the lures work. “The trout were hammering them,” Albright said after a successful trip during trout season. Traditional soft-plastic lures often break off or get swallowed by fish, clogging waterways and fish stomachs. Albright's version, on the other hand, is fully edible and decomposes in just over two weeks. He's now producing 10-packs of the five-inch worm lures — the classic “senko” style — in biodegradable packaging, with plans to sell them in local bait shops. His creations could mark a step forward for anglers and the environment alike. Albright says he's starting small but thinking big: “One day, maybe we can get them manufactured somewhere other than my kitchen.” (Interested buyers can email him here.) In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, Sasha welcomes two extraordinary guests: artist and curator Justine Kurland and Marina Chao, a curator at CPW. Together, they discuss their collaboration on The Rose, an exhibition that explores collage as a feminist form, strategy, and genealogy. Featuring works by over fifty contemporary artists and key figures from the 1960s and 1970s, the exhibition examines collage as both a means of world-building and a survival strategy in times of crisis. Sasha, Justine, and Marina delve into the layered responsibilities of artists and discuss the assumption that interpreting a straightforward photograph is inherently simpler than reading and interpreting conceptual art. https://www.justinekurland.com https://cpw.org/staff/ https://cpw.org/exhibition/the-rose/ Justine Kurland is an artist known for her utopian photographs of American landscapes and the fringe communities, both real and imagined, that inhabit them. Her early work comprises photographs, taken during many cross-country road trips, that counter the masculinist mythology of the American landscape, offering a radical female imaginary in its place. Her recent series of collages, SCUMB Manifesto, continues to make space for women by transforming books by canonized male photographers through destruction and reparation. Kurland's work has been exhibited at museums and galleries in the United States and abroad. Her work is included in permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Carnegie Museum, Pennsylvania; Getty Museum, California; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, among others. She works with Higher Pictures in New York. Marina Chao has previously held curatorial positions at the International Center of Photography and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As assistant curator at ICP she organized the exhibition Multiply, Identify, Her (2018) and contributed to the publication Public, Private, Secret: On Photography and the Configuration of Self (Aperture and ICP, 2018). She was awarded a 2019 Curatorial Research Fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for Seeing Meaning, a project exploring the intersections of image, language, and technology.

Colorado Outdoors - the Podcast for Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Colorado Parks and Wildlife owns and operates the largest inventory of dams in the state of Colorado. The water impounded is used for purposes such as downstream irrigation, fisheries management and aquatic operations, and a multitude of recreational activities including fishing, boating and swimming.CPW manages more than 120 dams across the state and has spent more than $126 million in the last decade for dam safety related work. All of this work helps keep downstream communities safe while providing recreational opportunities in Colorado's reservoirs and on tailwater fisheries. Without these dams creating reservoirs, the state would have significantly less water-based recreation opportunities, as there are only 11 natural lakes in Colorado greater than 50 surface acres. In this episode of the Colorado Outdoors Podcast, we chat with Dam Safety Program Manager and Chief Dam Safety Engineer Eric Eisinger as well as Capital Program Manager Margaret Taylor about what it takes to monitor and manage Colorado's inventory of dams.Come for the great information, stay for the beaver jokes.

We're talking Colorado Bucks on today's Rokcast. Robby hosts Brandon Diamond, the Area Wildlife Manager for Colorado's Gunnison Basin. Like previous episodes he's been on, Brandon brings a depth of knowledge and experience to managing Colorado's mule deer. They talk about buck survival after the 5-year plan, and its effect on buck:doe ratios, age class, and more. They also talk the challenges of managing for a variety of users with increased technology, communication among hunters, and why the rifle seasons in the next 5-year plan didn't move much earlier, even though there was support from the CPW for this change. They also talk about the number of Gunnison Mule Deer deer licenses issued under the current limited quota management verses the OTC management this system replaced in the late 1990s, including buck to doe ratios. You might be surprised at this data! It's all about Colorado Bucks on today's episode. Rokcast is powered by onX Hunt. In April 2024, Colorado's 2024-25 Long Appropriations Bill opened the door for a new Colorado Parks and Wildlife statewide K-9 program. The new statewide K-9 program will have a lead K-9 Supervisor and five K-9 handlers assigned to the new statewide unit. This comes on the heels of the success of CPW's previous pilot program in which CPW utilized three dogs.K-9 officers aid CPW wildlife managers in detecting the presence of wildlife, whether that's checking hunters or even identifying endangered species in the field. Along with assisting in wildlife law enforcement cases, dogs can also be used in black bear management.CPW recently promoted former District Wildlife Manager Ian Petkash, who handles K-9 Samson, to the K-9 Unit Supervisor position. Petkash joins the podcast to let us know plans for expanding the K-9 program and provide a better understanding of how CPW's wildlife officers utilize dogs in the field and what it takes to build the program.

If you tune into social media, there are a lot of influencers and gurus peddling one-size-fits-all financial advice and unfortunately plenty of investors base their strategies on what these people recommend. Find out why basing your investment decisions on what's trending on TikTok is short sighted and discover the seven indispensable steps of building wealth that are the most common among our most successful clients. Conventional wisdom such as paying off mortgages, quickly maxing out 401(k)'s or buying only Term Life insurance can be short sighted. Wealth isn't created by following rules of thumb, random one-size-fits-all fixes, or chasing trendy financial tips. Wealth is created by developing a custom-tailored strategy that facilitates wealth creation and prepares you for the future. The wealthiest people aren't doing the same things as the other 99%. Avoid rushing and applying random tidbits of information without first creating a comprehensive wealth strategy. We all have to take a long-term strategic view of wealth creation. There are seven key steps in building wealth that are common amongst all of our most successful clients. The first step is understanding cash flow. Cash Flow isn't about monthly budgeting. It's a 12-month roadmap that outlines where your money will go including savings, investments, and day-to-day expenses. Effective cash flow management is about abundance and a focus on wealth creation. Budgeting operates from scarcity and measures success by such things as paying off debt or simply making ends meet. Wealth doesn't just magically form out of scarcity. Step two is really understanding your investment risk tolerance. Many investors carry far too much risk for their stated tolerance levels but have really no way of gauging what risks they're carrying. It's crucial to know where you fall on the risk spectrum and to work with a professional to help you tailor your investment strategy. Complete the questionnaire on our website to discover your risk tolerance and know where to start that conversation. Step three is to learn your tax allocation. Knowing how to help mitigate tax liabilities is an essential aspect of building and keeping wealth. Tax deferral methods like 401 K's can be useful in some situations, they are not what we would consider comprehensive tax strategies. A deferral is not a savings. Knowing how to allocate assets to mitigate tax liabilities requires an understanding of your entire financial picture. A professional trio of maybe a certified public accountant, CPA, certified private wealth advisor, CPW, or a tax attorney, is essential for making the most of the opportunities available to you. Step four is to understand investment verticals. The more public market investments that are acquired such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds, the deeper the portfolio vertically grows, but adding more of the same to your portfolio doesn't necessarily mitigate the exposure to the risk you're trying to diversify away from. Horizontal opportunities are outside of the same vertical such as real estate businesses, private equity, and life insurance annuities, and they don't share in the same risk pools that each vertical may be exposed to. Effectively diversifying reduces the risk in a portfolio overall and forms a stable foundation to build on. Don't put all your eggs into one vertical basket. Step five is establishing multiple streams of income. Relying on a single source of income, like your job or a single investment is a risky proposition. Businesses, royalties, passive income investments, or other consulting or freelance opportunities are all ways to create more than one stream of income. More sources of income mean your financial situation is more robust during economic storms and you have more capacity to take advantage of opportunities. Number six is to adopt financial delegation. There's usually an element of cost and trust when managing financial decisions in a DIY fashion. There comes a tipping point when the perceived savings of doing things on your own becomes an opportunity cost. The complexities involved with wealth management require specialized support from professionals. The cost of working with a professional can be seen as an investment when it opens up new opportunities and it allows you to focus on your strengths. Delegate specific financial tasks to professionals like accountants, lawyers, and financial planners. This allows you to focus your time and effort on enjoying the benefits of having the help and the division of labor helps ensure that all aspects of your financial life are managed optimally. Step seven is finding your purpose. Scroll social media and you'll find that there are countless examples of miserable wealthy people. Money certainly makes things easier and helps you afford some privileged experiences but happiness is derived from inside of ourselves. You'll never have enough money and there's always something more to achieve. Answering the question of what you would do or commit your life to if money was not the motivation can offer insight into what you feel like your purpose is. Building wealth is not about quick fixes or following the herd. It's about strategic informed decision making that requires an opportunity that looks at cashflow, risk tolerance, tax allocation, diverse investments, multiple income streams, financial delegation, and purpose. Season 5, Episode 220 REAL ID Deadline, Montana's Bison Lawsuit, and Colorado's Big-Game Draw Changes Explained New Travel Rules: REAL ID Required by May 2025 Starting May 7, 2025, travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities such as a federal courthouse. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005 following 9/11, sets security standards for state-issued IDs but faced years of delays. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is urging travelers to check their IDs now to avoid disruptions like missed flights. Passports and other approved forms of ID will still be accepted for travel if you don't have a REAL ID. To ensure you're ready, visit your state's DMV website for details on obtaining a REAL ID. Experts warn last-minute delays could lead to headaches for travelers as the deadline approaches. Stay ahead of the curve—check your ID today! Montana Sues Yellowstone Over Bison Herd Management: A Battle for Livestock Protection Montana has filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) over its 2024 bison management plan, which increases the allowed bison population in Yellowstone from 3,000 to 6,000. Governor Greg Gianforte and state officials argue that this plan puts Montana's livestock at risk of brucellosis, a disease spread by bison. The state claims Yellowstone has failed to manage the herd since the 1960s, and that expanding the population violates federal law. Yellowstone, however, argues that the park can support a larger herd, citing new studies showing that elk, not bison, have been responsible for spreading brucellosis to cattle. NPS also points out that bison-human conflicts have decreased over time, and that tribal and public hunting programs have helped manage the population. Montana contends that the federal government's actions burden its farmers and ranchers. They accuse Yellowstone of failing to engage with the state during planning. The lawsuit adds to a long-standing conflict over bison management in the region, with Montana demanding more control to protect local agriculture and wildlife. Starting in 2028, CPW will replace the hybrid draw with a split-draw system, dividing tags evenly between two pools: one for preference points and another for a bonus draw, which operates like a raffle. This change makes it easier for hunters with fewer or no points to get a tag but frustrates those with decades of accumulated points. Resident hunters will still get priority, with 75% of licenses reserved for them, while nonresidents receive the remaining 25%. The overhaul also introduces a once-in-a-lifetime harvest rule for premier species like bull moose and bighorn sheep, alongside increased fees and mandatory waiting periods for certain tags. Critics argue that the changes devalue preference points and fail to adequately address concerns about nonresident quotas. Despite the backlash, CPW says the updates aim to simplify the system and make hunting opportunities more accessible. Key policies, such as random draws for desert bighorn sheep, remain unchanged. The new rules will be revisited every 10 years, allowing room for future adjustments. Read the full list of changes HERE. Reference: https://www.womensranchbronc.com/ New York's Pheasant Stocking Program Faces Threat—What It Means for Bird Hunters According to the New York Times and Outdoor Life; New York's pheasant stocking program, which provides hunting opportunities by releasing pen-raised birds, is under threat by a proposed bill from Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthal. The program aims to give hunters the chance to chase pheasants, as wild bird populations have drastically declined due to habitat loss. Despite the argument that releasing these birds is "state-sponsored cruelty," the program is essential for maintaining hunting activities in the state. Without it, pheasant hunting in New York could cease to exist. Though critics argue that hunting pen-raised birds is too easy, the program provides a crucial starting point for new hunters and young people. It also serves as a gateway to fostering future wildlife advocates. However, opponents, including animal welfare groups, push for an end to the practice, claiming it's not in line with ethical hunting standards. The state's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) states that the program is necessary for creating hunting opportunities, especially for beginners. If the bill passes, it could significantly reduce hunting participation in New York, affecting conservation efforts and funding for habitat restoration. If other states follow suit, it would be a setback for bird hunters nationwide. Colorado Wolf Debate: Ranchers' $582K in Damages According to Outdoor Life; Ranchers in Grand County, Colorado, are facing severe financial losses due to ongoing attacks by gray wolves, and they are now asking Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) for $582,000 in compensation. This request, submitted at the end of December, is well beyond the state's $350,000 Wolf Depredation Compensation Fund, which is intended to cover all claims for livestock losses caused by predators. If approved, the ranchers' claim would deplete the fund, leaving the state with no resources to cover future losses. The claim comes from just three ranchers, but it reflects the growing challenges faced by those living in rural areas where wolves were reintroduced under a voter-approved program. These ranchers say the damage extends far beyond the confirmed wolf kills. They are claiming compensation for missing livestock, cattle sent to market underweight, and lower conception rates in affected herds, which they attribute to stress caused by the constant threat of wolf attacks. The Copper Creek wolf pack, responsible for many of these incidents, was reintroduced by CPW, but the pack's presence has been devastating to local ranching operations. Despite multiple requests from ranchers to remove the wolves, CPW opted to relocate them. With these mounting pressures, ranchers are now calling on CPW to pause the wolf reintroduction program. This plea follows months of escalating wolf attacks and frustration with how CPW has managed the situation. Ranchers argue that the state has prioritized wolves over the livelihoods of local agricultural families, putting their businesses at risk. Tensions are high, and the state's wildlife commissioners were set to meet on January 8 to discuss whether to pause or continue the program. This decision could determine the future of wolf reintroduction in Colorado and whether ranchers will be forced to continue bearing the brunt of its consequences. It's Friday, and we're rounding up the biggest news of the week. First, Secretary of State Jena Griswold is in hot water after a spreadsheet with sensitive election-related passwords was exposed online. Will this flub have an impact on voter turnout? Will Griswold resign? Then, the future of big cat hunting is up for debate as millions of dollars pour into both sides of a surprisingly complex ballot question. Producer Paul Karolyi and host Bree Davies are joined by returning fave, Aspen Times politics reporter Elliot Wenzler, to talk about Griswold's rough week and how the effects of our 2020 wolf reintroduction vote will influence the way Denverites think about big cats, plus an Aurora councilwoman's NSFW texts, at tattoo shop gets phallic revenge, and another Chicano mural is whitewashed with no warning. Here are some links to Elliot's coverage of the mountain lion hunting ban measure and the stress of wolf reintroduction on CPW. Paul found some unedited footage of the phallic paintings on the tattoo shop and played a clip of Kyle Clark's interview on 9Newwith the Secretary of State. Bree mentioned Denver's push to get incarcerated people to the polls, David Ocelotl Garcia's previously whitewashed — and then restored — mural, “Huitzilopochtli”, and a piece from the GES Gazette, “Can Art Survive Here?”. Vote NO on Colorado Proposition 127 Our state's wildlife deserves management rooted in science, responsibility, and proven practices—not radical, one-size-fits-all approaches. Proposition 127 threatens to undermine years of dedicated conservation efforts by disregarding the needs of Colorado's diverse ecosystems. Effective wildlife management requires a balanced, adaptive approach that considers the unique environmental and ecological needs of each species, rather than imposing sweeping, inflexible policies. This proposition could lead to unintended consequences, risking harm to habitats and disrupting the delicate balance that local experts have worked hard to maintain. For the sake of Colorado's wildlife, let's support smart, science-based conservation efforts, not extreme measures. Colorado's first rifle season will open Oct. 12 this year, and hunters across the state are getting prepared and sighting in at local ranges to get perfectly in tune to take their shot this fall. With that in mind, it's an excellent time to learn more about Colorado's Nontoxic Bullet Replacement Hunting Program.Following the 2023 passing of HB 23-1036, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has worked with several partners to demonstrate the effectiveness of non-lead ammunition for hunters in an effort to reduce toxic ammunition on the landscape for the benefit of people and wildlife. In this episode of the Colorado Outdoors Podcast, learn all about this program from the people key in its creation and implementation.Colorado State Representative Barbara McLachlan, who authored the bill in the state assembly, joins the show to discuss what prompted her to introduce the legislation. Show host John Livingston is also joined by co-host Kristin Cannon, a Deputy Regional Manager for CPW who is overseeing the implementation of the program, and the two interview an incredible panel of guests that detail the impacts of lead ammunition to wild animals and the effectiveness and benefits of copper alternatives.Included on the panel are Bryan Bedrosian of Sporting Lead-Free, Leland Brown from the Non-Lead Partnership and Aaron Kindle of the National Wildlife Federation.Give this episode a listen and hear for yourself why making the switch from lead to copper might be part of your hunt plan this year.
Episode 201 Details Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Fee Hikes: Key Updates Latest News: Hunting, Outdoors, Travel & Western Living ALASKA: HUNTER SURVIVES BEAR ATTACK & GUNSHOT WOUND Tyler Johnson, a 32-year-old hunter from Sterling, Alaska, survived a brutal brown bear attack and a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting on the Kenai Peninsula. Johnson was hunting black bears with his father, Chris, a former US Federal Wildlife Service officer, when they accidentally startled a sleeping brown bear in the dense grass. The bear charged Tyler, who struggled to draw his sidearm before being knocked down. Despite sustaining severe injuries from the bear's claws and a gunshot wound to his leg, Tyler managed to fire seven rounds into the brown bear, eventually incapacitating the animal. His father, Chris, helped finish off the bear and immediately began treating Tyler's injuries which included an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to Tyler's leg. Tyler Johnson always carries a trauma kit hunting that has QuikClot and a slingshot band which the men used on the gunshot wound. The two men worked quickly, applying a tourniquet and calling for help using a Garmin InReach. It took search and rescue over an hour to get to the hunters, Chris made his son tell him hunting stories in order to help keep him awake and mind off the pain. Tyler was airlifted to Alaska Medical Center, treated, and released the same evening. This incident marks the third bear attack in the U.S. this year. Essentials: Hunting & Hiking Trauma Kit Before hitting the trails during hunting season or out for a fall hike; carrying a trauma kit is absolutely necessary. The backcountry is treacherous, and must be taken seriously. First rule - Always notify someone of your hunting, hiking or camping plans, destination, and time expected to be gone. Second rule - Always fully understand how to use any of the items in your trauma kit. The field is for reaction, home is for learning, understanding and practice. Trauma Kit Must Haves Tourniquet, Elastic Bandage, Gauze, Trauma Dressing & Trauma Sheers. QuikClot / Blood Stopper Emergency Heat Blanket, Headlamp, Fire Starter, Battery Pack. GPS Satellite Communicator: Garmin InReach or AtlasTrax for example. Duct Tape, Paracord, Moleskin, Tweezers. Benadryl (antihistamine), Tylenol, Ibuprofen. The pack, introduced from Oregon, has been linked to the deaths of cattle and sheep in Grand County, Colorado. Despite repeated requests from ranchers for lethal removal, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) opted for relocation, stating that this decision does not set a precedent for future wolf-livestock conflicts. The relocation decision aims to balance the state's wolf restoration goals with the needs of affected ranchers. This action follows the denial of permits for lethal control, despite rising livestock losses. The Cattlemen's Association criticized CPW for prioritizing wolves over ranchers' rights, highlighting the significant impact of the wolves on local livestock. The agency's strategy faces scrutiny as it walks a fine line between wolf conservation and livestock protection, with the future location of the relocated wolves still uncertain. This fee, originally introduced in 2019, helps cover the environmental and infrastructure costs associated with international tourism, which brought in over $11 billion from March 2023 to March 2024. However, the Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) criticizes the hike, warning it could hurt New Zealand's global competitiveness as tourists may choose more affordable destinations like Canada or the UK. In addition to the IVL, tourist visa fees will also rise on October 1, from $131USD to $211USD, potentially leading to longer processing times. Despite concerns, similar "tourist taxes" are common in around 60 destinations globally, such as Venice and Bhutan, and studies suggest these fees don't deter tourists. Summer is here, and the high-water season for recreational paddlers has reached Colorado's iconic rivers. While Colorado manages 43 state parks, the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is among the most unique in that it spans across a 152-mile corridor that follows the Arkansas River from the high mountains near Leadville to Lake Pueblo.AHRA isn't only a whitewater destination, though. It also boasts eight developed campgrounds and 19 dispersed camping areas while also offering gold-medal fishing, incredible wildlife viewing and hiking and climbing opportunities.Still, it's the whitewater that many think of first when it comes to AHRA. It's one of the nation's most popular rafting and kayaking destinations and is the most commercially rafted river in the United States.Along with that many boaters and stretches of Class III to Class V rapids comes challenges for CPW staff. AHRA rangers have already responded to multiple rescue calls this year, and there has already been one kayaking fatality in early June.In this episode, hear from AHRA Manager Tom Waters and River Ranger Supervisor Jeffrey Hammond on what it takes to manage AHRA, the diversity of the rescue and recovery situations they find themselves in and the ever-present danger that comes with whitewater recreation
